Cannot Backup Using Windows iTunes v8.0.2.20 & iPhone 3G v2.2.1

Hello All!
I know this is probably a common question, but I want to see what the most current info is. I have two iPhone 16GBs that I sync to my notebook. One of the phones backs up just fine. It has almost the exact same files (about 3GB free). I am running v8.0.2.20 of iTunes for Windows on a Vista system.
The phone I cannot get to backup (or it takes at least 12 hours and names the backup as Unknown with a bogus file date) is the older of the two. I've gone through all of the updates with it. I had the previous backup problems before the release of v2.2 which resolved the problems. I was having no problems for several months, but around December or so, it started doing the same things (giving corrupted backups, taking forever to complete, etc.) again. It started before the install of v2.2.1, so obviously that didn't help or hurt. I have deleted the existing backup file for the phone and also the sync history, with no improvement.
*So, is this an existing problem for other users as well and we're waiting for another patch from Apple? If so, what's the best ideas at this point for fixing this and preventing it? Also, if we're waiting for a fix from Apple, have there been any clues as to when it's coming?*
I'd appreciate any help. I've come to rely on my iPhone more and unfortunately, that means not having a valid backup is a real problem. I still have all of my scheduling, task management, and contact info on a good old Palm T|X, WHICH WORKS AND BACKUPS RELIABLY, and has for countless years. It makes me glad the program I use on there to handle all of those functions (Agendus by Iambic Software) hasn't been released for the iPhone platform or I'd be screwed by now (because I would have switched and not have a valid backup). *Any info or links to other threads would be appreciated greatly!* Thanks in advance!

I had the EXACT same problem but on 2G iPhone 8GB, v2.2.1 and taking several hours to get to 60% done, then craps out with some arcane error message.
I followed previous threads and other forum suggestions to:
a) Clear out corrupted backups
b) Reset iPhone
c) Even removed Stanza, which someone suggested could be the problem as he had alot of eBooks on it
But none worked for me.
I do have AppSniper and used it daily for what must have been several months.... so imagine all those icons cached on it with nearly 100 new apps displayed daily! It took over 2mins to clear the cache, and I now have "Show Icon" disabled.
The backup FINALLY WORKED!!!!
It took just over 15mins to backup, and I'm proud to say that I can see the backup intact on the iTunes Preferences > Devices panel!!!!
You are my hero! Thank you thank you thank you for putting up this solution!!!!!

    Try to reset your iPod using the recovery mode as described in this support article
    However, this will erase the iPod completely. If you have an iTunes-backup on your computer you can restore your iPod settings later from the backup.
    I have never tried this in WIndows, however. The procedure might be slightly differeent.

    Okay, that means with the latest iOS software, it requires the latest version of iTunes on the computer. Which computer OS platform are you using. Now you are saying that after downloading the latest version of iTunes that your iPhone is not being recognized by iTunes? Completely different thing, and the iTunes on the iPhone has nothing to do with that anyway. The iTunes on the iPhone is just for purchases.
    If you are having trouble with the iPhone being recognized by iTunes, use the appropriate link for your computer OS for assistance.

    The last Restore completed without any error message, or do you get the "ipod SYS" error message?
    I'm thinking this is a case of iTunes and Windows confusing the iPod's storage disk with another drive, described here

    So, iTunes/Windows thinks another drive is the iPod, and errors out because that drive is not formatted as expected (for an iPod).  The solution, in the document linked above, is to change the iPod's assigned drive letter.

    You have the MacBookPro6,2, the Edsel of Macs. You might be able to resolve the problem by reinstalling OS X. Try that first, if you haven't done so already. Otherwise, you may be covered by this program:

    Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers may not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue.
    Print the first page of the panic report, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
    Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
    *An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
    You may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saver preference pane, but that's not a solution. 
    Most likely, the logic board will be replaced. Sometimes the replacement is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility.

    Most likely, your phone was previously hacked to carrier unlock.  When you restored the phone, the hack was removed and the phone re-locked to its original carrier.  It now will recognize only the SIM card from that carrier, and can be used only with that carrier.

    There are serious issues with Apple servers. Just bear with it. I'm sure they will get it straightened out.

    Just connect them your computer. iTunes will treat each device separately. Or if you mean iTunes Store account, you can choose what you download to each device, either directly from the iTunes Store or in synching from iTunes on your computer, as long as you don't have automatic downloads turned on.
