Cannot boot Cent OS converted machine in Hyper-V

It looks like you might be having an issue with the filesystem. I don't have much experience with either though. KOOLER (StarWind) might have more insight.

Problem: I cannot get past the following
kernel panic - not syncing: attempted to kill init!
My goal is to get this Linux guest booting in Hyper-V.
I just completed a V2V conversion using StarWind V2V Image Converter.
I am able to log into this Linux guest at the vSphere Console, so it is getting past the obstacle pictured above.
Thank you in advance.

  • MDT 32bit boot image does not boot type 2 virtual machine in hyper-v

I created a type 2 virtual machine on a windows server 2012 R2 and tried to boot it with MDT 32 bit (x86) boot media and it will not boot.
Same media works if I use type 1 virtual machine .
    Is this expected behavior ?

  • How to convert offline ESXi 5.5U1 virtual machines to Hyper-V?

    Following on from my
earlier question, I am having trouble working out how to convert my ESXi VMs to Hyper-V. Am I doing something really unusual?
I have a ESXi 5.5U1 server at home for my home test lab. I want to convert this to Hyper-V Core 2012 R2. Target storage layout will look like this:
Currently under ESXi 5.5, I don't have the C drive (using a USB flash to boot), and the RAID-5 and RAID-0 arrays are two separate VMFS volumes.
I don't have swing kit to migrate, I have to repurpose existing hardware. I do have my Windows 8.1 workstation but that only has 900 GB free space.
Some of my VMs have vmdks greater than 2TB.
    My plan was to
In ESXi before rebuilding, move my VMs from the RAID-5 vol to the RAID-0 vol and then delete anything that wouldn't fit that's not strictly necessary from the RAID-5 volume.
Shutdown ESXi and remove the USB flash drive.
Install Hyper-V onto the System disk as C drive.
Format the RAID-5 volume as NTFS (64k) and create a mount point into the C drive as C:\RAID-5. Put my VM disks in C:\RAID-5\VirtualDisks and the VMs in C:\RAID-5\VirtualMachines.
Somehow convert the VMs from the RAID-0 VMFS volume to Hyper-V VMs on the RAID-5 NTFS volume.
My confidence is low because I have tried to convert a new test machine created in ESXi 5.5 to a spare test Hyper-V 2012 R2 with the MVMC 3.1 converter and it failed. I also tried with the free 5nine converter and that failed too. I tried with and without
the Guest Additions installed. Both conversions failed. I should mention I am in a workgroup, not a windows domain.
    Please help!

May i inquire on why those two products failed? I had some struggles with both of them but eventually got things worked.
Also you should try this one
Starwind V2V convertor, it has worked for pure offline conversions for me as well. That was years ago, so hopefully it still works.
Sure, here is the log from an attempt to convert a brand new VMware virtual machine which has Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard in it with no VM tools. http://pastebin.com/xdhzZ7tx
Here is the log from an attempt to convert a Lubuntu linux VM: http://pastebin.com/Nc0E8Bip
Both conversions attempted with MVMC3.1. Common error between them is
12/24/2014 08:25:36 +00:00  [7]  VERBOSE:    Microsoft.Accelerators.Mvmc.Engine.DiskCopyFailureException: The virtual disk(s) attached to the source virtual machine were not successfully converted to VHD(s) and copied to the
workspace folder path. ---> System.AggregateException: One or more errors occurred. ---> System.AggregateException: One or more errors occurred. ---> System.Security.Principal.IdentityNotMappedException: Some or all identity references could not be
    translated.
I retried using 5nine converter and it worked this time, not sure why. Will not try a test with a BSD based distro (pfSense) and Linux.

I have installed Win 7 professional on hp touchsmart 320-1030 with an OEM DVD to overwrite Win 7 premium  preinstalled from factory.
I want to reboot the machine with the same DVD after completing the installation, to test for possibility of reimage in case of crash. Although in bios, I specify cd\dvd as firts boot media,  the machine cannot boot from installation DVD.  I have 20 machines that behave this way. Can anyone assist?
Note: I had to delete all partitions on the PC before doing a fresh installation of Win 7 pro as Premium can not joing domain.

    Hello,
So, you installed Window 7 Pro with a DVD, you boot with it to install the O.S, and now it does not work?
Have you tried to load the BIOS default values or even updating the BIOS?
If it had work before, cant understand why it does not work now...
    Let me know.

  • Cannot connect to virtual machine in hyper-v

One of our servers got corrupted and I managed to salvage the VHDs of the two VMs we were running on it. The server was Win Serv 2003 and was running virtual server.
Now I'm trying to import the VHDs into Hyper-V on a newer 2008-R2 server and while the VM seemed to import just fine I cannot connect to it. Each time I try it gives me this error:
"Cannot connect to the virtual machine. Try to connect again. If the problem persists, contact your system administrator."
I think the issue could be that the VM was apart of a domain and now I'm trying to connect with a server that is on a different domain and has a different DNS.
Is there anyway I can save this VM and not have to start from scratch?

    Hi,
Is Windows Server 2003 is a DC? Is there a backup DC for Windows server 2003 if it is a DC?
If you logon with domain account, you cannot connect to the origin domain if you don't have DC or you haven't restored DC. To fix this issue, you can restore Windows 7 to the point when windows 7 doesn't domain if you have such a restore point.
Also, if you have DC and still connect to the virtual machine, i recommend you to log on the Windows 7 client with local adminstrator , disjoin from origin domain, then re-join the domain. At last, it will work well.

  • Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter VMware To Hyper-V Cluster

I'm not sure if this should technically be in the clustering section but I have just moved from SCVMM 2012 SP1 to 2012 R2 and I kinda miss the built-in converter tool. What I used to do when converting VMware to Hyper-V was uninstall VMware Tools and then
I would do a physical to virtual conversion on the VMware virtual machine and SCVMM would handle copying the virtual machine while it was online and register it in our Hyper-V cluster. Now, the only thing I could come up with is the Microsoft Virtual Machine
Converter but it seems rather limited and doesn't seem to have an option to import to a cluster. So is the only option to convert it over to Hyper-V as if it were a local machine and then run another export/import process to get it in the cluster? I tried
to point it to a CSV and while it copied the disk over, it registered the virtual machine in ProgramData (the default location). This obviously causes issues when trying to make the VM highly available. Any one have a suggested process of the best way to go
about this? Thank you in advance for your time!

So no matter what option I choose, V2V always shuts down the source VM during the conversion process. On the other hand, if I use the old method of uninstalling VMware tools manually and then doing a P2V instead, the source VM has to stay online for
that type of process. Then I just have to migrate it to become highly available and that seems to accomplish what I want. The only annoying part is that I couldn't run it on my Win 8.1 Pro workstation as it requires the BITS feature to be installed
and that only appears to be available on server editions (correct me if there is a way to get it on 8.1). I guess the documentation (I think) says that it should run on server editions only but V2V runs fine from 8.1 since it doesn't need BITS since it's
    an offline process.

  • Type 2 Virtual Machine in Hyper-V will not PXE boot with WDS

    Hi
Bit of a wierd scenario this but I'm doing a bit of a lab experiment kind of thing. The setup is as follows:
VMWare Workstation 10 with Windows Server 2012 R2 running as a virtual machine. In VMW10 I have a NAT network interface and a Bridging interface set to load with the virtual machine. These seem to work fine (although the NAT doesn't seem to want to connect
to the internet but that's why the bridging one is there in addition).
Server 2012 is configured with the following roles:
ADDS, DHCP, DNS, Hyper-V, Printer, WDS
I have correctly configured WDS to work on the same machine as DHCP and I can get PXE boot working with WDS on a Type1 Virtual Machine in Hyper-V using the Legacy Network adapter. My problem is when I try and PXE boot on a Type2 Virtual Machine (this type
is new in R2 and should eliminate the need for a legacy network adapter) using the same network interface that I used for the Type1 machine, I get an IP address from DHCP but WDS doesn't seem to respond. Instead I get the "PXE-E16: No Offer Received"
message. I have tried just about everything I can think of and spent the whole day trying to figure out why this is the case but came up with nothing. Has anyone else encountered this or can anyone shed any light on the matter?
    Many thanks in advance

"VMWare Workstation 10 with Windows Server 2012 R2"and "Server 2012 is configured with the following roles: ADDS, DHCP, DNS, Hyper-V, Printer, WDS"
Hyper-V is not supported to be run as a VM.  It is a Type 1 hypervisor, which means it works on the bare metal.  You have it running as a VM on a Type-2 hypervisor, so it has no access to the bare metal.  Yes, VMware may have made it so some
things work in that environment, but it is not a supported (or tested) environment for Hyper-V.

  • Cannot boot from time machine disk

I have a 2012 MacPro with 1 SSD and 3 Mechanical Disks installed. The disk in Bay 4 I use as a time machine disk, but upon booting the computer and holding down option I was only able to select my primary OSX Boot device ("Macintosh SSD") with no other bootable devices listed. If I have Time Machine on an external disk, I am able to select it as a boot device.
I just had a recent scare with a completely currupted disk that needed reformatting, so I'm checking everything I have to make sure it works as expected.  Not being able to actually boot from the Time Machine disk to restore my computer if anything should go wrong with the Primary SSD and Hard Disk is quite worrysome.
How would I boot from an Internal Time Machine disk?
    UPDATE:
I have found that I do not have internet recovery and I also do not have a Recovery HD.
I am downloading Mountain Lion from the App store again and will try and create some recovery media from that.

You should be using Carbon Copy Cloner to put a bootable copy of your SSD on another disk drive (it will offer to create ML Recovery volume also).
    Cloning
Using Cloning as a Backup Strategy
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/7032/carbon-copy-cloner
You can have one drive that has clone of all the other drives in multiple partitions.
You could have more than one TimeMachine drive and a copy (cloned partition) of the system on each.
I do NOT understand why you can boot from TimeMachine on an external drive.
I have never even tried to boot from TimeMachine. You mean Recovery mode, not a standard system?
    Mac Basics: Time Machine
Hold down the Option key at startup to boot into the startup manager. Select the Recovery system of the Time Machine backup to start from. Once started, you will have all of the functionality of Recovery.

    Mac OS X Recovery: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
What I do and what I think you should include and add to your backup strategy:
An SSD *NEEDS* to have a disk image for restore if and as needed (and you need TRIM Enabler, and you need TE on your secondary drive.
You / we always have needed an "emergency / maintenance boot drive"
You can shrink and create 120GB partition on your backup drive but never have just one backup set or drive, "all your eggs in one basket" does not work forever.
Your OPTION boot should, if you installed ML or it came with it and you installed or cloned to the SSD, had one, or using "Command + R" on startup to boot from Recovery Mode. Trouble with that is if the drive needs to be formatted, and an SSD should be at times, you can only erase another partition, not the entire device.

  • Error installing Office 2013 on Server 2012 R2 RDS - Error 25004: the product key you entered cannot be used on this machine

    Hi there,
I really hope someone can help me as I am tearing my hair out trying to get this resolved!
I am working on a Server 2012 R2 server with RDS running. Before it was turned into a RDS server it had a copy of Office 2010 running as a trial to see would it work for the accounting package that is running for users via Remote Desktop. Trial worked ok
so it was converted into a RDS server. Now, as its a RDS it needs to run Office under a volume licence, which I have. However when trying to install I get the message: "Error 25004: the product key you entered cannot be used on this machine. this is most
likely due to previous Office 2013 trials being installed on the system."
In summary I have tried everything I can think of and find to remove all traces of the old Office from the machine but still this message persists. I have run the Fix It For Me uninstall from MS and it cannot find any Office installed. i have manually searched
through all of the Windows directories including Program Files and AppData and removed all traces of Office from there, I have searched the registry and removed all I can find from there.
Where or what file does the installer look at to see that a previous version was installed?
I cannot scrub this machine which I would have done long ago because there is another SQL Server based application running on it.
Really really appreciate anyone that can help me on this,
    Thanks

    Hi,
I have definitely heard your frustration, and I’ll try my best to help you.
Since Office 2010 installed on it before, you need to remove Office 2010 completely.

A similar issue is addressed here. Although this method is based on Office 2010, but we can have a try:

  • Cannot boot after recovering a FileVault 2 protected disk

I used Lion's new recovery HD partition to restore a four day old Time Machine backup. However, two days ago I enabled FileVault 2, which is probably the cause of the fact that I cannot boot my mac anymore. As the whole disk is locked, I cannot access the recovery partition either. Disk Utility of Snow Leopard install DVD doesn't support unlocking the partition, it is grayed out and therefore I'm not able to mount it. I honestly don't know yet how I can fix this problem. Can you help me?

Unlocking worked using the DVD, but I could never really make it bootable anymore. Reinstallation of Lion on the existing partition didn't work either. Just FYI, when trying to make the disk the startup disk it give me the following error: 'Building boot caches on boot helper partition failed'. The only solution that worked and was good enough for me was to delete the partition, reinstall lion and restoring time machine data on the new installation afterwards.

  • Kernel Panic / G4 dp500 / Cannot boot currently

    Machine Config:
    10.4.8
    G4 DP500
    1.5 gigs ram.
Internal ATA133 PCI controller card (Sonnet)
Four internal hard drives. My current 4-drive configuration:
Three 200 gig drives are connected to the internal ATA133 sonnet card, and out of those three, just one was made to be bootable with 10.4.8.
The fourth drive (160gig) is connected to the on-board ata33 connector, and is bootable with 10.3.9 on it. Presently I cannot boot from either drive
I installed the Sonnet ata133 card three months ago to expand the drive capacity. I wanted to "see" hard drives larger than 127 gigs, which is the limit if using the onboard ata33.
Everything has been working fine for 3 to 4 months after I installed the Sonnet card, and three internal drives. But about three days ago, my computer was hard-frozen when I went to use it. No mouse movement etc. When I rebooted, I received the Kernel panic black screen with its resulting verbosity.
I had a spare internal drive laying around that was preconfigured with an OS on it. So fearing the Kernel panic was from the Sonnet controller card, I installed my spare drive to connect from the mother board ata33 connector. I was then able to boot from my spare. after that I was able to repair my boot drive that was attached to my Sonnet card. The one that was initially corrupted by the Kernel panic.
After rebooting successfully to m, I decided to leave my spare boot drive attached the on-board ata33 connecter (just in case the kernel panic happened again)
Well, it did happen again. And now I can't even boot from my spare now. Its as if the kernel panic is destroying the directories of my boot drives!
    Specifically the volume header wraps.
In addition, I can't even boot from Disk Warrior or my OSX install disk. The screen just hangs at grey. So, I have no more spare boot drives available, and I cannot boot from cd/dvd. The cd/dvd drive is attached to the internal on-board ata33 like my spare is.
I know that heat will often cause a hard freeze. But will it also cause kernel panics upon reboot?
    As it stands now:
When ever I try to reboot, a black screen will display unix command line text describing kernel panic and the last line is"
    "Panic: we are hanging here."
This seems like a hardware issue. But why are my boot directories becoming corrupted? At this point, maybe its over heating. I have four drives now stuffed into the G4 with ribbon cables all over the place and a vent fan installed into one of the unused PCI slots.
I haven't installed any new hardware lately.
I upgraded to 10.4.8 and the panic still happens.
I have 30gigs of itunes, 20gigs of iphotos, 40gigs of imovies, 10 gigs of mail, etc. My back up system was using SuperDuper to copy my USER folder to another internal drive, so I know I have a backup, It's just that I cannot access it. If I can recover my data, I'm going to go out and buy a G5, transfer my data, and be done with it. If I can't recover my data, then I will be forced to live a life of quiet desperation. My wife will leave me if I've lost her itunes collection
BTW, what is a good program to back up to 8.5 gig DVD's? Can I make large 20gig .DMG files and segment then into 8.5 gig portions? I no longer want to rely on internal backup. I would feel better knowing that my back were on dvd's locked in my fire safe. When did I become so dependant on computers?!

  • How to Install Hyper-V on a Virtual Machine in Hyper-V on windows 2erver 2012 R2 ?

    Hi ,
anybody know  How to Install Hyper-V on a Virtual Machine in Hyper-V on windows 2erver 2012 R2 ?
I want to create lab but i couldn't  I follow this article but the new VM is off
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/gbanin/archive/2013/06/26/how-to-install-hyper-v-on-a-virtual-machine-in-hyper-v.aspx
one of hyper-v component is not running
    thanks

Previously it has been blocked to install Windows Server in the VM and then add the Hyper-V Role.
However, it has always been possible to install Hyper-V Server inside a VM. (the free Hyper-V Server SKU)
The Hyper-V Server VM is fully manageable, but it cannot start any VMs.

I was working on an ibook and messing with it in firewire mode and was going to install leopard on it that way from my macpro. (just letting you know the context)
I tried to restart my machine(mac pro) and boot leopard both by pushing C and by running the installer.
I get the "You need to hold the power button panic message" everytime I do this. I unplugged external devices and tried this also and it has the same problem.
I cannot boot from the dvd anymore. If I eject the disc, osx loads normally.
Any ideas what I can do? (I have tried safe boot, pram clearing and hold option on boot to check options)

    I really appreciate everyone's help.
I am certainly not above taking the machine in but I will say this.....
I have been building and working on PC's for 15-20 years. I have never once used or had the need for a repair shop. It is my hobby. I recently switched to osx to give the mac a try and I love it.
I will say that vista/xp has four times as many problems but at least i can fix whatever comes my way hardware or software.
Any more ideas how to settle this without making my first trip to the repair shop ever?...
    Chad
