Cannot Boot From ANY Optical Install Disk

My trusty old iBook circa mid 2005 is overdue for an overhaul but refuses to boot in Target disc mode or boot from any of my install disks, 10 or 10.3 or 10.4. When I choose the disk from Startup Disk it begins to reboot until the Apple screen comes up with some pixelly artifacts onscreen and it hangs. Holding the 'C' key down does nothing. Please help I need to wipe this baby clean and start from scratch.

    Hey Craig,
Here's my pics of where the GPU sits from an earlier discussion:
"This is the position of the GPU on top. That bay right below is where the hard drive goes and that's it's connector lower right:
    http://s291.photobucket.com/albums/ll306/spudnuty/?action=view&current=13312GPUt op.jpg
Here's a view with the heat sink in place and a ghost image of the GPU:
    http://s291.photobucket.com/albums/ll306/spudnuty/?action=view&current=13312iBoo kGPUheatsink.jpg
The spot where I'd recommend applying pressure from underneath:
    http://s291.photobucket.com/albums/ll306/spudnuty/?action=view&current=13312GPUu nderneath.jpg
and where that spot is on the lower shield:
    http://s291.photobucket.com/albums/ll306/spudnuty/?action=view&current=133GPUBot tomshield.jpg
So to access that you'd take the lower case off. Go to ifixit for that.
If that solves your problem or makes it better it will run like that for a while. If it gets worse you'd need to reball it. $79 plus shipping one way in the States."

  • Cannot Boot from Any Device... ThinkPad Edge e250.

    Hey Guys
I Have a major issue i can't boot from any device. I bought a bigger hardrive and the hard drive works fine (works in my desktop) I have a couple of different windows installation and operating systems all bought from Microsoft and they work fine on my other computers. Ive tried booting to one of these CD's and even copied it to a USB and i cant boot to any one of them i have no idea what else i can do ? Is there anyone that can help me ?

What other devices have you tried to boot from?  Is your HDD functional with an OS installed on it?
The laptop is defaulting to PXE (network) boot - either because it doesn't find another bootable device, or because PXE has been set first in the boot order.  (or something is badly broken...)
Hit F12 during boot and see if you can boot from HDD or a CD/DVD.  Check BIOS for the boot order.

  • Cannot boot from any bootable CDs.

I have a flat panel Imac g4 and have already reset pram/nvram. This mac won't boot from any cd's. I hear no spinning of the drive either. The screen just comes up gray and I get the folder showing a question mark alternating with the system face on the folder. I really just want to be able to boot from but the cd to try to format the drive but the cd doesn't seem to be working either. Any suggestions would be great.
    Thanks
    imac g3 os 9.2,   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi Mazz
I have an old G4 iMac as well as my Macbook and I have just had this very thing happen to my iMac. I was told it was the hard drive that has died on me. I'm waiting for my new hard drive to turn up to fit it but I feel I have lost ALL the data on the old drive. I'm lucky I have all the very important files on my Macbook.
I hope this helps you out.

  • Super Slow boot from any start up disk.

I have a Macbook Pro that takes about 5+ minutes to boot up. The really weird thing is that this occurs when booting from different drives. I have tried two different drives with Snow Leopard on them and then wiped one and tried to install leopard fresh from the original system disks.
I have tried swapping in different ram and resetting SMC and pram. No luck.
So apparently there is something going on during startup that doesn't have to do with the drive installed. Anyone have any idea what that might be and how to fix it?
    thanks.

I would approach them. The thing is in Czech Republic where I live the law grants us two years warranty. As Apple only provides one year warranty (Apple care is not supported in Czech Rep.) the second year is probably covered by Apple local apple dealers which reflects in Apple prices heavily, which are at about 3/2 to twice bigger than in US.
Anyway this means that very few stores here are really happy to help with anything their customer wants (There is very little selection so either you cannot be picky, or you can buy mac abroad which has many downsides as well). I took it there yesterday and they sent it for diagnostics (I had previous experience with people working in local service center and honestly I'll be afraid to let them repair a mixer, let alone my beloved Mac), now I am trying to contact them about it and convince them that the part should be replaced under it's own warranty as they already replaced it about half a year ago. But I am afraid that won't be possible, as I suspect them of using old parts on machines not covered by Apple original warranty as they have to pay for them.
But back to my issue. I didn't really mean the soldering. That would be a last resort, or I'd have to be sure where exactly the problem is or I would have to have a new logic board at hand. I study robotics and although I am by no means an expert on such things, I have managed to repair a thing or two at a fraction of a new part price for another few years.
Anyway, the day before yesterday I sat near my MBP, installed the new security update few hours before that, copying some stuff from one drive to another via Firewire. I unplugged the first drive after a while and plugged in the second one. No strange sound, no burning, but the port couldn't even power a LED on the drive. I connected the first one, dead as well. So I tried USB which worked just fine. I thought it may have been caused by the update, so I restarted - no luck (Another problem appeared - slow start...and rather horribly slow one. The system was apparently searching for something, because the blue screen stayed on for about ten minutes after 5 minute booting and then it jumped right to the GUI with few apps already running in about a second), repaired permissions - no luck, backed up my stuff and tried a fresh install as the system was a bit cluttered and I planned on doing that sometime soon anyway, but that didn't help either. So I went hunting for a solution online. I tried probably every possible restart of this and that (PMU, unplugging everything and taking out battery and letting it rest overnight, SMC...you name it). In system profiler there was something like that Firewire cannot recognize a connected device (Not sure now really, I'd have to go through 263 page long pdf to find out. It was the same message mentioned above. I tried logging in safe mode, that was a bit slow but went rather smoothly, still no luck with FW. I went to verbose mode, which ran just fine, I don't really remember any strange messages, but after a minute or two presented the same blue screen and ran the GUI for some reason. That repeated every time. Also booting from SL DVD took about 15 minutes.
That's pretty much the whole story. From searching for a few hours I am now aware of a partial solution by deleting all Firewire related kext files, but I have no machine to test it on at the moment. That would of course cause FW not to work (Which I would hate really as I bought three new drives about a month ago and USB is a pain to backup to), but at least the booting should go smoothly.
I had an issue or two previously with my MBP, one of which was caused by the faulty graphics (hopefully new board, no questions asked) and the other one was probably caused by some so called expert repairing the first issue who wasn't even able to connect the display properly. For some reason they replaced the whole clamshell module with a brand new LCD which was nice.
Sorry for so long post, I guess I am just not able to keep things short.
    Thanks, John.

  • Cannot boot from USB to install windows 7

I am trying to install windows 7 using a usb on my 2011 macbook pro. Boot camp did not allow me to check the box to use a USB but I found a work around for that. So I was able to create the USB windows install, but when I ran bootcamp it returned "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key". I know that booting from a USB on the Macbook pro is not supported but is there a workaround for this? I even installed rEFIt and was able to click on the WININSTAL USB through that but I still got the same "no bootable device" error message after doing that. This is really frustrating, I already went out and bought a USB to install windows and I would rather not have to buy a DVD. Can someone please help me figure out how to reset the macbook pro's boot from the CD/DVD drive to USB?

Unfortunately you'll have to do another search, Maybe Yahoo/Google this time.
I'm guessing you did the Boot Camp Assistant .plist hack for the USB W7 installer? Did you try adding your <boot rom> version, farther up the list. I think a couple of people got it to work but can't be sure.

  • Cannot boot from any device

    Hej Lenovo...
I got a lenovo T60 and cannot use it... when i turn it on and everything is goes, it checks something and then writes:

How can I fix that by my self?

What other devices have you tried to boot from?  Is your HDD functional with an OS installed on it?

  • Why can't I boot from  my windows install disk using an external dvd drive?

My internal disk drive is broken on my computer, so I'm using an external one, but when I put my windows install disk in, it shows up when I'm using the computer, but it doesn't show up when I hold ALT on startup. Why is this?

Alt/Option Boot code is all in ROM. It shows an Icon for each potentially-bootable Volume.
Your Windows install DVD is not directly bootable, and so it does not show an Icon. (An OS 9 Installer CD would not show an Icon either.)
To install Windows, you need to research the use of Boot Camp, the software that provides Mac drivers and facilitates the Installation of Windows on a Mac. There are also Windows restrictions on the use of external drives which you may have to meet.

  • Installation good, but now cannot boot from install disk

Hi I installed leopard via upgrade and install all is working well apart from the occasional sound issue.
however when i try to boot from the leopard install disk I get a kernel panic saying that the computer is not recognized. If i boot from my original disk that came with my computer and run disk utility i get file errors. Should I repair these or will it ruin the leopard file system. And is the leopard install disk only suitable for intel macs.
    ray

It sounds like the lens on your optical drive is dirty if you're not getting to the installation menu. Use a cleaning DVD or wrap a microfiber cloth around a credit card and carefully slide it in and out a few times.

  • Help diagnos. flashing question mark on monitor, cannot boot from CD drive

Any ideas? This is an older G3 tower which was "souped Up" wtih USB and Firewire cards, memory
Mac froze in midst of work last week. Now only get flashing question mark supermimposed on image of a floppy drive.
Tried to re install system (OS9) but cannot get ANY CD to boot from CD drive. I reboot, hold down "C" Key with CD in tray ( and i can hear the CD drive working). But the tray opens and ejects/rejects the CD).
I now suspect the problem is NOT the OS but rather a hardware issue.
Am I correct in this assumption? what else could this be?
I am trying to help an older gentleman who has no backups and has some important documents on the HD.If I can boot up, might be able to retrieve those itesm. (and get a newer Mac!)

    Not the answer,Dale (thanks anyway)
    I read that article.
I cannot boot from any bootable CD.
Inserted the OS install disk as well as third party bootable CD.
with CD in the CD drive tray, I restarted and held down the C key.
Mac restarted but the CD tray popped open. Would not boot from the CD.
That is why I posted query
not only do we have the flashing question mark but bootable CDs are not booting this Mac. So I can do no diagnostics, no repair, not salvage of files.
I am trying to understand where the problem lies. am guessing Hard Drive failure but why should CD also not work?

  • DVD drive won't boot from Leopard or Tiger disks

    Hi,
I have had some issues booting from the OS install disks with my DVD drive, is it the drive or is it the software?
    Can this be fixed?
    Thanks
    Tom

There are known issues with some Leopard discs not booting, but if your Tiger disc won't boot either, I would say you probably have a defective optical drive.

  • Cannot boot from OSX install disk

I need to run disk utility to repair my boot drive.
I am attempting to startup from my OSX install disk. However, I can't seem to get my machine to do this.
My computer recognizes my install disk when it's in my superdrive. It mounts on the desktop and I can read from it.
However, when i go into system preferences>startup disk, OSX does not show my mounted OSX install disk listed as an option. Also, when I hold down C on startup, my machine ignores the command. And when I hold down the Option key on startup, the only startup option shown is my boot drive, not my OSX install disk.
I've tried zapping my p-ram. I've tried booting up in safe mode and then re-trying the above.
I don't know what else I can do, short of typing in scary UNIX command lines.
I'm going completely mental here. Please help me, somebody.
If it makes any difference, I've got gobs of apps installed, notably Adobe CS3, Final Cut Studio, Firefox, MS Office 2004.

Not that this solves the booting problem, but I recommend installing AppleJack, which is free (and does run on Intel). This provides easy commands for doing a disk check in single user mode (it's the same in the end as typing the Unix commands but much easier to use), and it's much faster than booting from the CD (even if you can).
Having installed it, restart holding command-S: after a lot of text you will get the line 'Type Applejack at the prompt' - you simply do this and then it's just a question of typing 'd' to check the disk and so on. (Incidentally do not run it from the Terminal when booted normally: you must use it only in single-user mode.)

  • IMac will not boot from any mode except Target Disk

I have an Early 2008 Penryn iMac 24" MB398LL/A running OS X 10.7.4 (see specs below) that will not boot from ANY mode, It also has several strange vertical bars from top to bottom on the screen. They are about 10 px wide, with some pixels empty and looks a bit like a barcode if you squint at it.
I have tried Safe Boot, Force Boot, DVD Boot, FireWire/USB Boot,  and it always gets to the same point. It gets to the apple screen with the spinning gear and then after about 8 seconds it freezes. The only way it works at all is in Target Disk Mode. It pops right up on my Macbook Pro and I was able to grab all my info!
I have run Disc Utilities and Tech Tool on it many times from my MBP and it passes every test.
I reformatted the HD and installed 10.7 again, it still freezes up at the same point.
I have tried using Single User mode and every time have had to run /sbin/fsck -fy twice because it always says the disk is ok but it was modified on the first pass.
I thought maybe it had a bad video card or logic board but and I ran the Apple Hardware Test on many occasions and it always passes. Recently I was told about Loop Mode and just completed running the AHT for just over 30 hours without any errors at all.
    UPDATE...
Strange Part… I tried installing Mountain Lion in Target Disk Mode and everything went smoothly. When it restarted on its own the lines on the screen were gone for the moment, but the Mac still freezes up on the spinning gear and immediately restarts on its own.  I have run every thing listed above on it and still nothing. Sometimes the lines reappear then in two more starts they are gone.
I did manage to have it start one time got a copy of the  the error report (its at the bottom too) The Mac ran for at least 30 minutes with no problems, then the screen went crazy a few seconds and it became unresponsive. The mouse moved but that was all it could do. Now my iMac continually restarts itself, I don't have any more ideas, HELP!
    Specs...
The iMac "Core 2 Duo" 3.06 24-Inch Aluminum (Early 2008/Penryn) features a 3.06 GHz Intel "Core 2 Duo" processor (E8435), with two independent processor "cores" on a single silicon chip, a 6 MB shared level 2 cache, a 1066 MHz system bus, 2 GB of RAM (800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, PC2-6400), a 500 GB (7200 RPM) Serial ATA hard drive, a vertically-mounted slot-loading DVD±R DL "SuperDrive", NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS graphics acceleration with 512 MB of GDDR3 memory, a built-in iSight video camera, and built-in stereo speakers underneath the 24" glossy TFT Active Matrix LCD (1920x1200 native) display.

  • Satellite A200 - Cannot boot from Recovery disk - code 1

I have Vista business and my laptop is currently running slow and is full of rubbish.
I have in the past used my recovery disc to completely re-install vista and start from a fresh version.
However, i have tried this time and it says that it cannot boot from cd - code 1.
Can someone tell me what this is and how to re-install vista?

Hmm... so its definitely not a ODD issue but there is something wrong with the shipped CDs. From my knowledge this error would appear if the CD would NOT be bootable!
Its strange for me that this notebook has been preinstalled with the Vista business.
Usually the notebooks are preinstalled with Vista Home Premium and usually you have to create the own Recovery disk using the preinstalled tool called Toshiba recovery Disk Creator.
Anyway, if you are not able to boot from these disks then you would need other disks.
You could order it from the ASP in your country or from this page:
    https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx
    Cheers

Was just out of guarantee before fault appeared
    Thanks chris

    Hi buddy,
    > But still think bios is corrupted
If you think so, then contact your authorized service provider. The technicians can check your notebook and try to reflash the BIOS. The technicians are really experts and so this shouldnt be a problem for them.
Here you can search for one:
