Cannot boot from internal CD-ROM Drive

Was opening a compressed file in OSX 2 and computer hung-up. Powered down. When I started again the OSX screen with the spinning top was the only thing it would do. Tried to start from internal drive CD (Held "C" on boot). Would not load from boot. Eventually would not start-up at all. Pulled cover and removed battery and held reset. Finally got it to boot OS9.2. Installed OS10.2 CD and chose install. When it tried to re-boot using the CD it came back with an error saying it could not change the start-up drive to the internal CD - Error (-2). So cannot even reload software. How do I get it to boot off my internal drive again so I can check the OS installation?

Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The first thing I would do would be to reset the PRAM. Hold down Command + Option + P + R while you hit the power button and hold for 3 to 5 chimes. Release and allow to boot.
Check out Your Mac won't start up in Mac OS X (Mac OS X 10.3.9 or earlier) and see if it offers any clues for you.

Hi,
You may need to disable Secure Boot - see the guide on the following link. While in the Boot Options, you may also need to Enable Legacy Devices.

Cannot Boot From Internal Disk After Failed Firmware Update

Xserve 1,1 (Late 2006)
After a failed firmware update the server will not boot from an internal volume.
I have tried the firmware restoration CD 1.4 without success due to the following:
I press the sleep LED but only get the initial three fast blinks, not the next slower three blinks, and the last three fast blinks.
I can boot in Target Mode, NetBoot, from an installation CD. The volume with the OS (10.5) is recognized by another machine, but the server will not boot from it.
I have tried reinstalling the OS on another drive, and repairing the drive.
I would appreciate any suggestions.

I read somewhere that it might have to do with the fact that it says "S.M.A.R.T. not supported" on DU. Is there any way to fix this? does it mean I'll need a new drive soon?
I think something else is afoot. I believe that, when you boot from the the system/install and run DU from there, DU does not recognize SMART reporting.
Before I recently updated my MBP to 10.5.7, I ran DU from the DVD to verify the disk before applying the update (I'm cautious about those updates). It gave the same report you are seeing. Once I was booted from the hard drive, the SMART status report returned to normal. SMART will typically report "failing, not "not supported" if the drive is going bad.

Advice needed: Cannot boot from new external SATA drive/enclosure.

I replaced my two internal drives with 1Tb Seagate ST31000340AS drives.
I also bought a Mercury Elite Pro external enclosure from Other World Computing (OWCMEFW924AL2K) and populated that with two more of the same drives.
I have RAID disabled and am using Super Duper! to backup/clone my two internal drives to the two external drives. The drives are all working fine, as are all the possible connections (USB2, FW400 and FW800).
After a backup/clone, the Disk Info in Disk Utility shows the external system drive clone to be bootable (which it should be, as my previous external drives were). However, any attempt to boot from the drive via the launch-option key method or by changing the startup disk in the preference panes fails. With the latter I get a brief blinking folder question mark, then it reverts to booting from the internal system drive. With the former, I am not even shown the external drive as a boot volume.
So, what could possible going on here? All the hardware and cables check out, and in all the time I've used Super Duper! it has always created bootable backup drives.
I have tried both FW400 and FW800 connections for the boot, and nada.
I'm really at a loss to explain what might be going on.

After a lengthy live support session last night, and a further phone call to their tech support today, we both realized we had run out of ALL options to fix the problem. (There is nothing you could imagine that we didn't try).
In the end, OWC were kind enough to offer an overnight crosship of a replacement enclosure. I guess their suspicion is that there is a defect on the board in the enclosure. We'll see once I get the replacement...

First step: I've done a driver update and then a FIRMWARE Upgrade.

Notebook NB200 cannot boot from USB CD/DVD drive / flashing cursor

I have a toshiba nb200-11L just under 2 years old (no warranty!). Recently it developed a problem which prevents it from booting up and all that happens is that I get a flashing cursor in the top left corner of a black screen. The only options availavle are F2 and F12 but these will not allow me to enter either safemode or to use the toshiba recovery option.
I have purchased the toshiba recovery disk on cd rom in order to complete a re-install but the bios only shows HDD and FDD as options, and there does not appear to be any way of adding further options.
I have checked the hard drive which appears to be ok. I am concerned that the problem may be the motherboard which I suspect will make any repair uneconomical.
Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

I do not know what BIOS version it is, but I have set the BIOS to default. I suspect that there may be a problem with the external dvd drive, as I have plugged it in to another laptop and it is not being recognised. I am going to try another one tomorrow - fingers crossed!

T61 cannot boot from USB harddrive

My T61 cannot boot from USB harddrive. the drive have VID 058F and PID 6391, the drive is bootable on all other computers. What happened? The bios does not recognize the drive at all.

I've had some strange experiences with usb hard drives and would ask you to try the following; when you want to boot from the drive start your T61, go into the BIOS > Startup > Boot menu and you should see the option USB HDD with a "-" in front of it. If I am correct you should exit BIOS, (F10 save and exit), upon restarting enter BIOS again and go again to the Boot menu. This time the USB HDD entry should have a "+" infront of it showing that the drive has been properly recognised.
If my theory is correct, no guarantees, you can then exit Bios with F10 and hopefully boot from the drive.

Satellite M45: Cannot boot from CD-ROM or HDD

I'm getting the following messages...
WHEN BOOTING FROM HDD: "Invalid partition table"
WHEN BOOTING FROM CD-ROM: "No Bootable CD in ATAPI CD-ROM"
Consequently, even though I have the recovery CDs the computer cannot read them.
I tried changing boot order to no avail. Created a Bart's bootable CD which works in my other computer but not in this laptop. Are there special drivers I need for this CD-ROM?
I am at wits end on this one.

I think your partition on the HDD is corrupt and therefore you cannot boot from the HDD.
In such cases the HDD should be completely formatted and then you could try to install the OS.
It seems also that your drive cannot recognize the bootable CD (WinXP???) and therefore its not possible to boot from the drive.
Well, its really stupid situation :_| really stupid!
However, did you try booting from other CD? For example original Microsoft Windows CD?
If not I would recommend to do it and possibly the drive will be able to read the other CD.
If not so I think the drive must be checked. Possibly its also corrupt.

HP 2000 cannot boot from cd rom

I have made a DVD boot disc, but cannot get my HP 2000 to boot from CD ROM. I altered the bios setup to enable boot from CD ROM and I made CD/DVD the first boot option. I also have tried F9 to enter the boot options menu. I do not see an option to boot from CD ROM. How can I get my HP 2000 to boot from CD/DVD?
I am messing around with the TAILS operating system. My ultimate goal is to boot TAILS from the DVD drive. I also have tried booting tails from USB, but after reading a while on this issue I have read that some HP machines do not support booting from USB.

I need to resurrect this thread. Still cannot boot from the CD drive. I have verified my boot disc, so the problem is with the laptop. Same setup as I noted above regarding bios and OS.

My basic problem is still that when I enter the boot options menu, boot from CD/DVD is not an option.
While researching I did come across this post, http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Recovery/How-to-boot-from-USB-with-the-new-uefi-bios/td-p/2552... It states that legacy boot needs to be enabled. However, when begining to enable Legacy Boot I receive the warning that the laptop will not be able to boot the OS (Windows 8.1), so I cancel changes. I would prefer not to have to enable/disable legacy boot everytime I try to switch between Windows and TAILs.
At this point, it would help to confirm that I have the needed version of the Bios (guess I should call it UEFI). Also, clarify if enabling Legacy Boot is needed.

I want to recover my laptop & i need to boot from cd.
I pressed F12 first time & boot from cd but i discoverd that i have put another cd just when i restarted (correctly) i could not boot from cd neither hdd.
When i log in bios hdd was detected but not available in boot priority menu. Just network adapter was there & now i cannot boot from hdd nither cd/dvd. Bios version is 1.30

Does this means that neither HDD nor CD/DVD drive appears in the BIOS boot option?
Strange what notebook model do you have?
Did you try to set BIOS to default?
If not do this (press F9 and save the changes in BIOS)

Help diagnos. flashing question mark on monitor, cannot boot from CD drive

Mac froze in midst of work last week. Now only get flashing question mark supermimposed on image of a floppy drive.
Tried to re install system (OS9) but cannot get ANY CD to boot from CD drive. I reboot, hold down "C" Key with CD in tray ( and i can hear the CD drive working). But the tray opens and ejects/rejects the CD).
I now suspect the problem is NOT the OS but rather a hardware issue.
Am I correct in this assumption? what else could this be?
I am trying to help an older gentleman who has no backups and has some important documents on the HD.If I can boot up, might be able to retrieve those itesm. (and get a newer Mac!)

I read that article.
I cannot boot from any bootable CD.
Inserted the OS install disk as well as third party bootable CD.
with CD in the CD drive tray, I restarted and held down the C key.
Mac restarted but the CD tray popped open. Would not boot from the CD.
That is why I posted query
not only do we have the flashing question mark but bootable CDs are not booting this Mac. So I can do no diagnostics, no repair, not salvage of files.
I am trying to understand where the problem lies. am guessing Hard Drive failure but why should CD also not work?

I just replaced my internal hard drive and copied the back-up from the old drive onto the new one. The new drive appears to be properly formatted and to contain all the data I copied to it, but I am unable to boot from it. Any advice? Thanks!

Thanks, Courcoul. I went back and formatted the drive again, this time booting from the OSX installation CD. (Last time I booted from the back-up drive from which I was copying.) I don't know if it was booting from the CD and not the drive, or that I didn't format it properly the first time, but this did the trick. Working perfectly.

Cannot boot from external CD drive

Hi, I am trying to do a clean install of Snow Leopard on my Macbook Pro Core i7 (Late 2010).
First off I should note that I took out the CD drive in my macbook and put a 60GB SSD drive in its place, the SSD is blank and formated Mac OS (Journaled). This is the drive that I want to install the new OS too.
Anyway I went to the store to buy Snow Leopard (I lost the DVD that came with my mac) and am using that try to install the OS. I am currently using an external optical disk drive to install the OS (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0044DEDBG).
The problem occurs when I load up the CD. When I start up my mac holding the "c" key the external optical drive is show on the screen. But when I select it the computer just stalls on the grey apple logo screen.
I have also viewed the CD in Snow Leopard and tried installing it that way. However when it automatically restarts my computer to boot from the CD it again stalls on the grey apple screen.
The "utilities..." button on the CD also does the same thing as above when I click it.
How can I boot from this external optical drive without getting stuck on the grey screen?

You need replacement original disks(phone Apple Support) and not a retail package.

Cannot boot from cd/dvd drive

under f2 setup
i go into the bios boot options menu and it has four options..
cd/dvd
hdd
fdd
lan
i put cd/dvd at the top and save..then check and it truly is at the top of the list..i have even on one occasion disabled the hdd as a boot option..
computer does not read from cd/dvd and gives the missing ntldr msg..this is not the problem..
when i do f12 to select boot option it only list the following
hdd
lan
i dont know or understand how the f12 boot options are different from the f2 bios setup options..or how to get them synchronized so the computer can boot from cd..the drive works..spins and acts like it is reading..but is not loading because the f12 boot options do not have cd/dvd among the options and apparently the bios settings are not being used..
i need to know how to fix this problem so i can reload the operating system on the computer..

Well, the 'gold standard' to tell if the drive is good is to try to boot from it...
A fault in the read head or associated circuitry would not stop the tray from opening/closing, the drive from spinning or the read light from flashing.
You might try cleaning the optical lens. Use a Q-tip and denatured alcohol, very gently.
