Cannot boot from Mac/Windows

I have a Macbook Pro Mid 2012 running the latest OS. My Macbook was booting up to the Logo with a progress bar. The bar would fill up then turn off. So I left it and went onto my Windows parition turned it off and came back home unable to boot on both. Both cannot be unmount because I want to start my computer fresh. I tried from the Disk Utility and it isnt working, now when I press 'Option' while booting up neither Mac or Windows is showing, only recovery.

Hi.. You want AHCI drivers for windows, dontcha ya? Here you go.. enjoy. Just follow the instructions and be on your way to booting windows via optical drives connected to the odd sata ports.

I already have a patched w7AHCI.mbr, if you are interested. Just email me, and I can send it to you!

  • Cannot boot into Mac OS X after partitioning in Windows

My Mac is a Macbook Pro 17", I got it from my friend (no original disc).
So after upgrading it to Mavericks (I was unable to install Windows using Boot camp of 10.6.8), Boot Camp successfully let me install Windows 8.1 Pro (x64).
However, after installing, whenever I install the Software Support in Windows, Windows always show Blue screen after showing the logo. I was able to restore Windows back. Therefore, I am now using Windows with only basic components, no Boot Camp driver.
The problem is that, I shrink the Boot Camp partition, and create another NTFS partition. Now, I cannot boot into Mac OS anymore. Holding Command + Option + R does nothing, holding Option while startup shows a hard drive named Windows (instead of Mac HD).
Can I make the Mac bootable again? And if possible, is there any available driver for Windows 8.1?

    Hi iPragash,
At startup, hold down the Option Key (alt) to choose between Mac OS X and Windows.
To select what system you want to boot into by default:
    - when in Windows go to the Control Panel ->BootCamp ->Installed Startup Disks
    - when in Mac OS X go to System Preferences->Startup disk.

  • Macbook Pro 17 cannot boot into Mac OS anymore after making partition on windows

My Mac is a Macbook Pro 17", I got it from my friend (no original disc).
So after upgrading it to Mavericks (I was unable to install Windows using Boot camp of 10.6.8), Boot Camp successfully let me install Windows 7 Professional (x64).
The problem is that, I shrink the Boot Camp partition, and create another NTFS partition (so I can store data in the second partition as I usually do when using Windows). Now, I cannot boot into Mac OS anymore. Holding Command + Option + R does nothing, holding Option while startup shows a hard drive named Windows (instead of Mac HD). And no Recovery HD too

    shakhriyor,
you’re going to need to purchase a replacement pair of the original grey installation DVDs for your MacBook Pro from Apple to be able to fix this problem.

  • How can I set to boot from MAC OS by default after I installed Windows?

How can I choose to boot from MAC OS by default after I installed Windows? I have a MacBook Pro Leo 10.6.8. I used bootcamp to install Windows XP SP2, but now if I don't press the option key it will start up with Windows, and I don't want that. Thanks for any help.

Select it in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.

  • Installing Windows 7 on my bootcamp partition (mid-2009 mac book pro with mountain lion) My computer won't boot from the Windows 7 Install DVD.

    Hello,
I have been trying to install Windows 7 on my macbook pro (mid 2009, MBP53). I have successfully created a bootcamp partition using the assistant. When the computer tries to boot from the windows 7 install dvd, the screen is just black. The dvd spins for a bit, then stops and the computer is just black (no blinking cursor).
Any advice would be very appreciated.
    Thanks.

What kind of an install DVD are you using for Windows?
You can use any DVDs that are hardware specific. Only the full non-hardware soecific DVDs work on the Mac.

  • Cannot create bootcamp, cannot boot from Windows DVD or Bootcamp USB.

2011 Mac Mini, running 10.9 Attempting to create a bootcamp installation. Note that I have done this many times with other Macs, including similar Mac Minis.
I get through the Bootcamp assistant process of downloading windows support files and creating a USB drive for the install, I partition the internal 500gig hard drive in half. On reboot all I get is a black screen. Not a Black screen with flashing cursor, no error of any kind, just completely black, I have waited for over 45 minutes and it never changes. I have repeated this process several times, letting bootcamp assistant remove the partition in between, with several versions of the .iso file. I have recreated it from an original Windows 7 Pro 64bit. I have downloaded an iso of the same from Microsoft. None give any different results. I have reset the PRAM. I have a external Apple superdrive and have booted up to startup disk manager and can see that the USB is a valid boot, the Windows DVD is valid and there is an option for EFI Boot. None work, all give the exact same black screen with nothing. When booting from the Windows DVD, you can hear it spin up and read for a short while, then is stops. I have read and tried all the related posts here and on any web site I can find, although there are few and most just point back to the same articles here.
Help, tis is driving me crazy! I know it can be done, but there is something at work here I can't figure out.

You need to use a USB2 flash drive for BC Drivers/Windows ISO, not a USB3 stick. Windows installers do not support USB3 out-of-the-box. On Macs, BC drivers will later add support for USB3.

  • CDBOOT: Cannot boot from CD - Code: 5

When I attempt to boot from my Windows 7 install disc, I get this message on a black background:
CDBOOT: Cannot boot from CD - Code: 5
    I'm using a late-2008 13-inch aluminum MacBook running OS X 10.7.
I've attempted burning the install .iso file multiple times (creating a couple of useless DVDs) at the slowest speed possible (which seems to be 2.4x, according to Disk Utility), and that has not solved the problem.
I haven't been able to find any help on this issue for a Mac user who doesn't already have Windows installed. (There seem to be solutions for people who are already running Windows).
    Can anyone help?

    Hi,
I had the verry same problem and I did multiple things I thought that could fix this problem.
Point one, the burning speed has nothing to do with the quality of your boot disk, you only have to lower burning speed if your burning process fails. So remind this for future burning problems.
1: I did the Lion software update.
2: I got another .iso file, burnd it and made a new partition in bootcamp and ran the setup again.
This time it worked really fine. But I'm not shure wether it was the SU or the new .iso... I checked the SU summary for the lion system update, but there was nothing to find on a boot camp bug and since they've improved boot camp it should work better
I have a 27" imac with the 2TB drive and Solid state so I was thinking that maybe it depended on which fysical drive I made the firtual bootcamp drive. But I tested the new W7 Boot disk on both fysical drives and it worked on both.
UPDATE: I found the reason... I compared the two copies of windows 7 boot disks and the one that works had a different name... Your boot disk should be called "CD_ROM" if not, the bootsequence will not recognize your DVD as a CD which appears to be nescesary for the installation process.
Sorry for the incomplete english, I'm from Belgium.

  • Help: Cannot boot from leopard disc anymore, everything else fine

I was working on an ibook and messing with it in firewire mode and was going to install leopard on it that way from my macpro. (just letting you know the context)
I tried to restart my machine(mac pro) and boot leopard both by pushing C and by running the installer.
I get the "You need to hold the power button panic message" everytime I do this. I unplugged external devices and tried this also and it has the same problem.
I cannot boot from the dvd anymore. If I eject the disc, osx loads normally.
Any ideas what I can do? (I have tried safe boot, pram clearing and hold option on boot to check options)

    I really appreciate everyone's help.
I am certainly not above taking the machine in but I will say this.....
I have been building and working on PC's for 15-20 years. I have never once used or had the need for a repair shop. It is my hobby. I recently switched to osx to give the mac a try and I love it.
I will say that vista/xp has four times as many problems but at least i can fix whatever comes my way hardware or software.
Any more ideas how to settle this without making my first trip to the repair shop ever?...

  • Cannot boot from osx or cd, help

    Hi,
I have a problem. My macbook 5.1 boots only to windows, not to cd or osx. I am not sure what has happened but I think I installed the latest security update. I have a backup with time machine (osx) and vista with windows backup. I can wipe the whole disk clean (I do this only if I am absolutely sure it will work, CD is now unresponsive, what about if network fails...).
However, I cannot boot from CD, to verbose mode or to single user mode. None of the keys work (eject, c, s, v, cmd+c, cmd+v, cmd+s) anymore at startup. My installation dvd is stuck into the cd-rom. The eject button does not work in windows (otherwise the vista works perfectly). Also the refit screen has disappeared.
This problem is caused (to my knowlege) due to following actions:
    1. security updade => failure to boot osx (hangs to apple-logo and shuts down)
    2. recovery from time machine to 2 days old configuration (last known working)
    3. current status, no cd, osx or startup buttons
This is my work computer and I need the linux (osx) part on monday. Please help.
    Juha
    Technical details:
    - refit
    - osx leopard
    - macbook 5.1
    - vista created with bootcamp
    - timemachine 500Gb

I got the problem worked out. Now that I have the possibility to boot from cd I used the recovery from timecapsule again. Now it worked more properly. There is some issues with some programs and data (missing), but thats another story.
Last time I left the recovery program calculating the space needed (step 1) overnight, as takes a lot of time. I finished the step 2 (choose recovery date and copy the files) in the morning. I was not at the computer when it did the thing and I only saw the text 'recovery complete'.
Apparently there is a 'feature' that if you lose the connection between steps 1 and 2, the recovery program copies the network path that is empty (connection lost -> empty path). The program thinks everything is copied and gives 'recovery complete' message.
The problem is now mostly solved, some programs are not recovered. This is seen as question mark icons in the tray. Overall I have succesfully recovered from the latest security update.
    Juha
P.S. My original login name has disappeared from this forum. I am the same guy as Dv3. Could some admin mark this as solved.

  • Win 7 pro installed on hp touchsmart 320-1030, the machine cannot boot from installation DVD. Assist

I have installed Win 7 professional on hp touchsmart 320-1030 with an OEM DVD to overwrite Win 7 premium  preinstalled from factory.
I want to reboot the machine with the same DVD after completing the installation, to test for possibility of reimage in case of crash. Although in bios, I specify cd\dvd as firts boot media,  the machine cannot boot from installation DVD.  I have 20 machines that behave this way. Can anyone assist?
Note: I had to delete all partitions on the PC before doing a fresh installation of Win 7 pro as Premium can not joing domain.

    Hello,
So, you installed Window 7 Pro with a DVD, you boot with it to install the O.S, and now it does not work?
Have you tried to load the BIOS default values or even updating the BIOS?
If it had work before, cant understand why it does not work now...
    Let me know.
    Thanks,

  • Cannot boot from DVD since 10.4.6 update.

My Quad cannot boot from the Superdrive at all.Upon updating I decided to repair permissions from the DVD but everytime I got to the Apple logo the fans powered up,full tilt. I had to turn the Quad off from the power button and start up holding down the mouse, in order to eject the DVD.
As far as I remember, I allowed the computer to start up twice, and disconnected all peripherals whilst updating.
I've tried zapping the pram and resetting the nvram to no avail.I've inserted Disk Warrior and that will not boot. The computer runs fine from the HD (although there was one occasion when, briefly, a small OS9-style Mac monitor appeared with a question mark, then made way for a proper boot), but I'm really concerned at this problem. I do not want to wipe the system drive and start from scratch, since I've only just finished migrating a whole buch of software from another G5, and I have TV job looming.
Incidentally, both my other G5's and Mac Mini updated with no perceptable problems. Can anyone shed any light on this and, perhaps, offer a solution (other than a wipe ! ).

Any installation can theoretically cause harm. If you aren't backed up, you may be forced to use Target Disk Mode if you can't boot a DVD, or an external DVD burner that supports booting. Both LaCie and Otherworld Computing have external Firewire DVD drives that support booting. Target Disk Mode is described here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
Fortunately when you boot via Firewire or use Target Disk Mode, you bypass the hard drive's bootloading software, which you don't when you use the internal optical drive.

  • Satellite U925t cannot boot from USB

    Hi
I cannot boot from USB flash drive on Satellite U925t. I use bootable USB flash drive inserted (Hiren Boot 15.2, sure booted on another laptop), restart the system. When the splash screen is displayed, press F12 to access the boot menu, selecting USB - but laptop no boot from USB.
    Please, Help me.

From within Windows, try holding SHIFT when you select Shut down. Is there any change then?
Also, try entering the UEFI settings, disabling Secure Boot, and changing UEFI to CSM.

  • IdeaCenter A310, Cannot boot from CD – Code 5

Installed a developers/trial version of Windows 8 on my A310, only it appears to have somehow completely removed my recovery partition.
Now I have no working OS on the computer and when I attempt to boot with a Windows 7 CD to reinstall I get a 'Cannot boot from CD – Code 5' error.
Why won't it boot from the CD? How can I reinstall Windows? Pleaseee help.

Hi ToxicVoices and welcome to the forum,
If you hit F12 at the bios splash screen, it should bring up a list of bootable devices. Does the cd drive show up there?
If you hit F11, it should take you into the recovery environment if the recovery partition is still there.  If the recovery is still there, you should be able to restore from a backup up, (if you made a backup).  If no backup, you would have to restore to factory settings.

  • Help diagnos. flashing question mark on monitor, cannot boot from CD drive

Any ideas? This is an older G3 tower which was "souped Up" wtih USB and Firewire cards, memory
Mac froze in midst of work last week. Now only get flashing question mark supermimposed on image of a floppy drive.
Tried to re install system (OS9) but cannot get ANY CD to boot from CD drive. I reboot, hold down "C" Key with CD in tray ( and i can hear the CD drive working). But the tray opens and ejects/rejects the CD).
I now suspect the problem is NOT the OS but rather a hardware issue.
Am I correct in this assumption? what else could this be?
I am trying to help an older gentleman who has no backups and has some important documents on the HD.If I can boot up, might be able to retrieve those itesm. (and get a newer Mac!)

    Not the answer,Dale (thanks anyway)
    I read that article.
I cannot boot from any bootable CD.
Inserted the OS install disk as well as third party bootable CD.
with CD in the CD drive tray, I restarted and held down the C key.
Mac restarted but the CD tray popped open. Would not boot from the CD.
That is why I posted query
not only do we have the flashing question mark but bootable CDs are not booting this Mac. So I can do no diagnostics, no repair, not salvage of files.
I am trying to understand where the problem lies. am guessing Hard Drive failure but why should CD also not work?
