  • Cannot boot from USB drive!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi
I have 3-4 120Gb 2.5inch drives which I clone my MacBook Pro to on rotation.
I have always been able to boot from these drives UNTIL NOW!
Suddenly I can no longer boot from them, the boot process starts and gets well through and then the drives all seem to just 'hang'.
The only significant change is that a local Apple support company upgraded my stock 120gb drive to a 160Gb drive.
Any ideas what the issue coiuld be?
    Cheers.
    Robin

    Hi robster,
If the USB drive contains a valid OS you should be able to verify and repair the permissions on that drive, give that a try.
Also i suggest running DiskWarrior 4 on it.
The replaced internal drive should have no effect on this unless some settings got changed when the new OS got installed on it that now prevents the mac from being able to read your USB drive.
Does the USB drive need a driver ? if so is the latest version of that driver properly installed ?
If the USB drive checks out and all is OK maybe a re-install of the OS on your internal drive would help.
For now try disk utility and diskwarrior if you can that could narrow things down

  • Cannot boot from USB HD on T61 & T61P Why not?

Have bootable WD and Hitachi HDs in external USB enclosures.  Have successfully cloned one of these WD) using Acronis.  When trying to boot from the USB attached drive using PF12 and selecting the recognized drive on the boot menu get either BSOD or message unable to boot operating system.  What gives?  Know the WD will boot internally as it was the disk that came with the system.  Get the BSOD with this disk in USB port.
Hitachi give me the unable to boot operating system message when trying to boot from USB drive.
Using a TrekStor HD enclosure pn D260U20P10-3 which works fine if I boot the internal HD.  Can copy and even backup internal drive to external HD but can not boot from it.

    Hello,
As I understand it, Microsoft Windows 7 and earlier operating systems do not support booting natively from a USB Mass Storage Controller interface.  The installers do from things like USB-attached optical disc drives and flash drives, but that's not the full operating system.
Support for booting from USB in the main operating system environment might be introduced in Windows 8—I thought I read something about this, but cannot seem to find a reference right now.

  • T61 cannot boot from USB harddrive

My T61 cannot boot from USB harddrive. the drive have VID 058F and PID 6391, the drive is bootable on all other computers. What happened? The bios does not recognize the drive at all.

    cwang36, welcome to the forum,
I've had some strange experiences with usb hard drives and would ask you to try the following;  when you want to boot from the drive start your T61, go into the BIOS > Startup > Boot menu and you should see the option USB HDD with a "-" in front of it. If I am correct you should exit BIOS, (F10 save and exit), upon restarting enter BIOS again and go again to the Boot menu. This time the USB HDD entry should have a "+" infront of it showing that the drive has been properly recognised.
If my theory is correct, no guarantees, you can then exit Bios with F10 and hopefully boot from the drive.
    Hope this helps.

  • Satellite U925t cannot boot from USB

    Hi
I cannot boot from USB flash drive on Satellite U925t. I use bootable USB flash drive inserted (Hiren Boot 15.2, sure booted on another laptop), restart the system. When the splash screen is displayed, press F12 to access the boot menu, selecting USB - but laptop no boot from USB.
    Please, Help me.
    Thank you very much

From within Windows, try holding SHIFT when you select Shut down. Is there any change then?
Also, try entering the UEFI settings, disabling Secure Boot, and changing UEFI to CSM.

  • Can i try archlinux on usb if my pc cannot boot from usb?

it seems my old pc cannot boot from usb, only boot from hd or cd.
can i use usb? or i have to burn a cd?

If you have a floppy disk you can put the PLoP bootmanager on it:
    http://www.plop.at/en/bootmanagerdl.html
This bootmanager has USB support and can boot from an usb stick even though your bios does not support it.
You can also burn PLoP on a CD. This is good if you want to burn only one generic CD and then be able to boot any usb stick instead of burning one cd for each OS you want to boot.

  • W541: Cannot boot from USB created with Windows 8 create recovery drive

Hello, I have just bought a W541, and want to install the supplied Windows 8 on an m.2 SSD.I created the recovery drive on a USB following the instructions in the User Manual, but the recover image procedure under Advanced Options cannot find the USB.During the re-image step, it fails to find a drive with a valid image.I've confirmed using the command window available under the Advanced Options that the USB is mounted Searching these forums, I found the following, which describes a similar problem for a T540:https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-W-Series-Laptops/Lenovo-W540-won-t-boot-from-USB-flash-drive-ThinkPad/m-p/1500902#M39097 This implies that the USB should first be formatted with FAT32 before use, which cannot work, since FAT32 only has a maximum 4 GB  partition, whereas when copied to the USB, the Windows 8 recovery drive occupies nearly 10 GB. Is it possible to specify the boot order from insde the BIOS? I could only find an entry under Security about UEFI boot enabling, nothing about the boot order. Can anyone help?Paul

Hello Z, thanks for the reply. I tried another USB drive, and created a recovery drive, as before. This time it was able to detect the presence of the drive when I tapped on the Enter key when starting up, followed by the F12 key.  However, there are still problems when I clicked through the options:Choose the languageChoose your keyboard layoutTroubleshootAdvanced optionsSystem Image Recovery At this point I am offered the option Windows 8.1.When I select this, it indicates it is scanning for system disks, and then displays the the pop-up window "Re-image your computer": "Windows cannot find a system image on this computer" Why does this happen if it detected that there was a Windows 8.1 installation on the USB? I've spent a whole day now on this. Luckily, if I can't solve it, the machine is new and I can send it back to Lenovo, and ask to have it re-imaged with the downgrade option to Windows 7.

  • Boot from USB drive

I have a 2-year old HP GT70T-200 CTO Notebook PC.  My internal CD/DVD drive broke a few months ago and I have been using an external (USB) CD/DVD drive since then.  Now my hard drive died and I just replaced it with an identical hard drive.  Since this is a brand new hard drive, I cannot do system recovery.  I need to install the OS from scratch.
I have a bootable DVD with the OS.  The problem is: I cannot boot from my external CD/DVD drive to install the OS.  My BIOS (InsydeH20, version F.63) does not seem to support this.  When I power up my notebook and press F9, there is no option to boot from my USB CD/DVD drive.
I have checked the BIOS settings (I find the BIOS Setup Utility somewhat confusing compared to others I have used).  Under System Configuration it offers three boot options: 1) CD-Rom Boot (this refers to the internal CD/DVD drive which, in my case, is broken); 2) Floppy boot (which I presume refers to an external USB Floppy); 3) Internal Network Adapter Boot (I am not familar with this... it is disabled unlike the other two).
Further down on the System Configuration is a Boot Order sub-menu which contains five options: 1) Internal CD/DVD drive; 2) USB Floppy; 3) Network Adapter; 4) Notebook Hard Drive; 5) USB Diskette on Key/USB Hard Disk.  I assume #5 applies to my external CD/DVD drive.
I have booted from that very same OS installation disk before and I tried it again on a different computer, so the disk is fine.  I have tried various combinations (like disabling internal CD/DVD boot, trying all three USB ports in turn, ...).  The problem here is that the BIOS does not seem to support booting from an external CD/DVD drive.
At this point I simply do not see how I can install an OS on my new hard drive.  Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Can anyone help with this?  Is there any way to boot from an external CD/DVD drive?
Or perhaps the Internal Network Adapter Boot is an option???  I could not find any documentation on this..  Is there anything out there?  Thanks!

  • T520 cannot boot from USB?

I just got the latest T520-4242
I want to use a kind of system installation or maintainance tool in a USB flash driver to boot my laptop.
The USB flash disk is a SanDisk Cruze 8G, but when I enter F12 at the beginning of the boot period, the menu of the boot option cannot recognize this flash disk. I've tried several computers to boot from this usb disk, they all booted well.
I have another USB flash disk SanDisk 8G, it can be recognized during the boot menu option. So it's very weird.

    hey icenimbus,
now that is strange since a different flash disk of the same brand and size could be recognized.
is both of them "cruze" or different? have you tried with different USB ports ?
if it is possible, load up your unit and get into the bios and set it to boot from USB only . See if this makes and difference and do try with a lower capacity flash drive.

  • Help diagnos. flashing question mark on monitor, cannot boot from CD drive

Any ideas? This is an older G3 tower which was "souped Up" wtih USB and Firewire cards, memory
Mac froze in midst of work last week. Now only get flashing question mark supermimposed on image of a floppy drive.
Tried to re install system (OS9) but cannot get ANY CD to boot from CD drive. I reboot, hold down "C" Key with CD in tray ( and i can hear the CD drive working). But the tray opens and ejects/rejects the CD).
I now suspect the problem is NOT the OS but rather a hardware issue.
Am I correct in this assumption? what else could this be?
I am trying to help an older gentleman who has no backups and has some important documents on the HD.If I can boot up, might be able to retrieve those itesm. (and get a newer Mac!)

    Not the answer,Dale (thanks anyway)
    I read that article.
I cannot boot from any bootable CD.
Inserted the OS install disk as well as third party bootable CD.
with CD in the CD drive tray, I restarted and held down the C key.
Mac restarted but the CD tray popped open. Would not boot from the CD.
That is why I posted query
not only do we have the flashing question mark but bootable CDs are not booting this Mac. So I can do no diagnostics, no repair, not salvage of files.
I am trying to understand where the problem lies. am guessing Hard Drive failure but why should CD also not work?

  • Satellite C50-A-1DV - Cannot boot from USB

    Satellite C50-A-1DV PSCG6E-08P01CEN
I could previously boot from USB by selecting Secure boot to off and CSM boot in the system bios. Since I have upgraded my bios from 1.3 to 1.4 I can't seem to boot from a USB drive. I can boot from the CD but not USB.
    Any Ideas?
    Booji

    hello
if you want install os in laptop then you should have to change the boot mode in BIOS menu.
for win 7 select the CSM boot mode
for win 8 select the UEFI boot mode
then boot by the pen drive and also CD/DVD.
Restart the system and hold the F2 key then you get your BIOS setup
if not get the BIOS setup by the process then you should tried power drainage.
Power Drainage process: just remove the battery and adapter of the laptop then hold the power key for 30 sec
after that connect adapter of the laptop then turn on system.
    Try it...:)

  • Cannot boot from USB-DVD on HP Envy 13

Even when the USB DVD drive is selected as the primary boot device or selected as boot device after pressing ESC and F9, I cannot boot from DVD.
According to another post I have:
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-Systems-e-g-Windows-8-and-Software/Boot-problem-but-...
I have problems booting from HDD as well, and now I also have problems booting from DVD. I have tried 3 different bootable DVDs.
Does anyone have any ideas to how the booting process could be corrupted any further and how I can regain the boot-from-DVD function? Now I cannot even run the recover DVD and recover the PCs factory settings.
However, I can still boot from HDD following the description from the other posting.

  • Won't boot from USB Drive

I am trying to replace my internal drive. I got a WD Scorpio from OWC and formatted and installed OS 10.6. But when I boot from the drive I get the panic screen.
The drive otherwise behaves normally. I can see the files, etc.
Also, strangely, the drive is only recognizable as bootable from the right USB port. That doesn't really make any sense to me.
Please help! The OWC folks have sent me multiple drives and have really tried to get this working, but I have the same result each time. Anyone out there have a solution?
    Thanks.

Try prepping the drive this way:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
