Cannot boot up in mac os after failed attempt

I've literally just opened up my new 24" imac and everything was running fine.
I used boot camp assistant to try and install windows xp on my computer.
After partitioning, I inserted a windows installation cd and clicked the last button in the boot camp asssistant and my computer restarted.
As expected it loaded up in a DOS-like window and I was prompted to install my cd of windows.
I'm guessing I didn't have a proper windows xp cd because it came with two cds. It began installing windows from the first cd, but I had to insert the second one to complete installation. Since there's no real way to eject a cd on the mac aside from the keyboard I had to cancel my windows installation.
At this point all I could do was force shutdown the computer and now whenver i turn it on it loads into the dos-like window and I can't load up mac os.
If anybody could help me out or at least point me in the right direction, it would be a greeeeeeaaaat help! I'm just bummed I was stupid enough to screw up my new imac an hour after opening it
Thanks!

Restart the computer with the X key held down, or with the Option key held down followed by selecting the Mac OS X system in the list, clicking on the button with the straight arrow, and then changing the startup disk from the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.

I cannot boot up my Mac book and all I get is a long beep
Have tried checking the keypad and no luck
Is this a logic board issue or is it something else?

My daughters Mac crashed mid assignment and after hours for phone support. So was looking to see if there was anything we could do here. Your advice is correct but the issue was "long beeps". Which are generally a serious issue and not one that we are going to be able to deal with. Like the icon .... and do appreciate the fact that you were happy to help. cheers

  • Cannot Delete Adobe Reader 9 Installer after failed download

I tried to download Adobe Reader 9 and the installation froze around 83%.  After multiple attempts I tried downloading an older version (Adobe 8) and it worked but the installation folder for Adobe 9 is still on my desktop and it will not let me delete it. I have already tried using the Windows Install cleanup tool but it did not work. Any other ideas on how I can get rid of this installation program?

Thanks.. I managed to find a way to make it work.. I had no Adobe Reader in my list of programs when I went to Start | Control Panel | Add/Remove..  I took a  chance and deleted Acrobat.com.. that allowed me to reload the latest v of Reader.  I hope it didn't mess anything else up.

I had same situation. Was able to delete by the following: (don't know why)
In Windows Explorer dragged the Adobe AIR folder from Desktop to another folder (which
removed it from the desk top display). Then just deleted it from the other folder.
    Hope it works for you.

  • Cannot boot computer out of safeboot after installing OS X Yosemite

    Hello,
I installed Yosemite on my macbook pro from early 2011 recently and I've had nothing but major problems. Right now, the major problem is that I cannot boot my computer out of safe mode. When I try to boot it outside of safe mode, it will either freeze on the sign in screen, or it will freeze after signing in. My computer is also paused in the middle of encrypting the hard drive for FileVault, saying to "connect to power to resume encryption." I know that it cannot finish this process unless the computer is not in safeboot mode. It's making my computer run much harder than usual and deplete the battery much quicker.
This is all very problematic for me. I'm a college student and my life pretty much relies on the usage of my computer.
Some other problems I've had since upgrading to Yosemite:
Speakers stopped working and didn't register (they work now)
Computer is extremely laggy in loading many things
I'm unable to search for any files through finder
There is nothing under "all my files" in finder.

    Update:
I was able to get into my computer out of safeboot mode and heres what happened
The encryption start and then paused permanently for several hours. I restart the computer, went into Terminal and typed in "sudo fd setup disable" as suggested by someone in a different thread. The encryption finished, I restarted my computer, and turned FileVault off. So far, things seem to be working much, much better. I guess time will tell if this is a permanent fix.

  • Cannot boot to Windows 8.1 after updating to Yosemite

I am using a MacBook Pro (Retina 13-inch Late 2013) computer, and mainly use Windows 8.1 via bootcamp on it for work. I have just updated OS X Maverick to OS X Yosemite 10.10, and now when booting and holding option, the Windows and Backup partition no longer show.
I have read a few threads on here with similar problems, and I believe that I understand the crux of the problem, but I am having difficulties actually using TestDisk as I'm not exactly sure what options to use and what to look for.
Below is a screenshot of my Disk Utility:
And here is the output of TestDisk so far (I analyzed the disk0):
It looks like the Bootcamp partition is still there, but I'm not sure what steps to take next -- any help would be most appreciated!

  • Cannot boot back into mac

I have done a few searches, learned some good info along the way, but I notice that questions similar to this aren't getting any response.
Boot Camp seems to run fine, but 3 out of 4 times, when I exit the PC via the BootCamp System tray, the Mac stalls. Instead of chiming and loading Mac OS, it goes into a sleep mode (power LED is completely off, but I can hear & feel the HD spinning. The Mac does not recover from this mode, so I end up forcing the power off.
All fine, but I do not want to force a shut down 3-4 times a day.
Does the lack of response means there is no precedent for this issue?

    My error?
That is scary as I haven't really touched anything inside of Windows besides the PC software we installed it for. Not sure what I could have done to cause an error, although I'm no technician, hence the question here.
No battery here (Mac Pro) but I will find the IT guy and have him run WRE.
I can handle disk repair from the Mac side, however that has been done very recently.
Anymore suggestions/similar experiences from anyone else?
    Thanks

  • Unable to boot WinXP on Mac Pro after BC 2.1 Update

Saw the BootCamp 2.1 update in ASU. Clicked to install it. Rebooted machine after ASU is complete. Now my WinXP is unable to start. I've tried holding down the ALT key and selecting the disk/partition - still will not boot. It puts the monitor to sleep and just sits there.
Anyone run into the same problem and know of a workaround?
    Thanks.

    OK I fixed this.
Firstly it's worth noting that it is possible to to disable secure boot in the 6.70 BIOS.
However this option is only available when the user password is not set in the security menu.
After enabling or disabling the password a reboot is required to make the secure boot enable/disable option either available or unavailable.
That's good I suppose as I guess it may prevent secure boot from being disabled when the machine is running. However this does not appear to have been related to this issue.
I selected the 'reset to factory defaults' option on the exit menu.
The machine was then able to boot from USB and DVD. The boot order was also respected.
Perhaps the windows 8.1 upgrade somehow invisibly corrupted the BIOS settings. Or maybe it was just a stranage co-incidence that the BIOS corrupted itself during the install. Either way that factory reset fixed it.

If anybody would have any clues on how to tackle this, I'd be obliged.

    The problem is reproducable.
    On a "Core" installation,
    +with the following added:
    Documentation Tools
    Lint Libs (usr)
    Live Upgrade Software (dependency; why?)
    On-Line Manual Pages
    Secure Shell
    SunOS Header Files
    Solaris Zones
    -and the following excluded:
    FTP server (root and usr)
    PCMCIA support
    Sendmail
    Solaris Desktop /usr/dt
    Xinside Xserver driver
I do get zones working on a full "end user" install -- but then I also get sh*tloads of stuff I really don't want on a server (GNOME, CDE, StarOffice, Evolution, Mozilla, X11, OpenWin, ...). Removing the spurious fluff won't work; some packages removal scripts seem to be broken, and dependency checking is, well, living hell on Solaris 10.
I would like a simple thing, which is: a very basic, bare-bones installation of a Solaris 10 server -- WITH zones.
Perhaps this is an impossible dream. Is it?

  • Cannot boot w520 when on battery after removing power

Ok, so my w520 boots up when the adapter is connected. if i remove the adapter and keep the battery on, it boots. but if i remove the adapter and battery and then put the battery back on, it wont boot. but after that, if i add the adapter, it revives itself.
what is the problem? because i find it annoying if i remove the the battery, the machine wont work anymore and then i  have to get my adapter to revive it
heres some information. i spilt water on the keyboard and then wiped it clean but made a mistake and turn it back on thinking it was fine and left the battery in. (there was no adapter at the time) the machine shutdown after a while so i left it off. but i left the battery inside. i spent a day drying it and it ran normal. this is the first probelm ive encountered since
also, ive dropped my laptop a few times, i was wondering if it was the cause of it randomly shutting down (before water incident) when i picked up the laptop, it would just turn off. sometimes if i put it to sleep and carry it around, it wont resume again. all this happens even when adapter is connected
    also
when i connect the adapter after the machine isnt able to boot, the battery light flashes a few times before the light turns off. what does that mean
so is the motherboard damaged? and about the battery boot problem, is it something inside that damaged or is it the battery?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

From my experience with W series machines, I would say something must have shorted out when you spilled water on the machine. Although a drop is also capable of destroying an internal component. Honestly this seems like a hardware issue and very difficult to debug online, I would just file a warranty claim. From my experience with Lenovo Warranty they are very prompt and they will probably end up swapping your board if anything.
Also, if you have the finger print reader enabled, try to power-on the machine using the finger print reader (Option is in BIOS and Windows) and see if that works, it could just be when you spilled water on the keyboard you ruined the power button and its no longer working properly?. Could just require a keyboard swap. (Takes 2 minutes to do it).

  • Iphone4 stuck in recovery mode after failed attempt to update OS. how to fix?

    Hi,
I tried to update my iPhone software (after successfully backing up to iCloud, and then successfully updating iTunes software) but got a 1604 error message.  The phone is stuck in recovery mode, and all attempts to restore the phone have resulted in failure.  I keep getting the same error message.  Basically, the phone never gets past "preparing to restore."  Please help.
I am linking my iPhone 4 to a PC Windows XP Professional, with up-to-date software.  This is the third time I've tried (and failed) to update the iPhone software, though the other two times I was able to restore.  This time nothing seems to be working.  Please help!  Thanks.

Look what google found! Amazing how that works eh?

    also:
*Error 1604*: This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, uninstalling and reinstalling USB ports, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections, device not recognized properly, computer won't recognize a FireWire or USB device). If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the USB 30-pin dock-connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
    1. Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.
    2. Restore and wait for error 1604.
    3. When prompted, click OK.
    4. Close and re-open iTunes while iPhone remains connected.
    5. iPhone should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
    6. Try to restore again.

  • My I-phone 4S will not turn on after failed attempt to Restore

Dear Anyone who could possibly help me,
Today I opened up my I-tunes and plugged in my I-phone; I selected the "Restore I-phone" option because I wanted to restore my I-phone back to its original state as when I first recieved it. I selected "Restore" and began the process. After the play menu of Itunes said something along the lines, "Restoration Complete" and went on to load other things that are suppposed to follow a restoration, I was called away. Since my I-phone was not completely through doing the restoration and other loading, I did not shutdown my my computer. Instead I closed the top down shut - which now I regret because I think closing my computer shut it what started the entire mess.
When I returned to my I-phone and viewed my Itunes, it said something like, "Restoration Failed" and then two small screens came up telling me the restoration did not complete. So, I unplugged my I-phone and turned it off. Now every single time I turn it back on, the screen of my I-phone has the Itunes icon saying "itunes" under it, and there is an white arrow under the icon that is pointing to the icon itself. Under the arrow, there is the picture of my plug in, (the same plug in we use to sync music and other data from our Itunes to our I-phone.)
I have tried holding down the home button while continuing to press down the on button and this same screen pops up. Even when I try to plug it in, the only that happens is I hear the sound it makes when I plug in my I-phone, but it will not show up in my Itunes. Nothing has worked and I am all out of ideas.
What can I do to turn my I-phone back on so that I can hopefully restore my I-phone and reload my music, applications and other things?

My friends iPhone locked up after he forgot his password. He gave it to me because I usually fix iDevices around my school. Well, I thought it would be a simple fix but his power button is jammed. I can't enter recovery mode to restore. I tried using tinyumbrella to enter recovery mode but it isn't detecting his iPhone. I need help. Please

When the iPhone turns OFF due to battery running down, open iTunes on computer, hold down Home button and keep holding while connecting iPhone to computer, keep holding until iTunes recognizes iPhone in Recovery Mode (this should take less than 20 seconds of holding down home button), then click Restore button of iTunes.
