Cannot boot with new SSD
Installed new OWC 240G SSD in 2007 iMac. Started up with old HD in external case running OS 10.10.2. Initialized SSD with Disk Utilities, and it mounted on the desktop. Transferred contents from old HD to new SSD. Computer boots fine from old HD in external case, but does not boot with internal SSD. After displaying Apple symbol for a few seconds of the startup process, computer goes to a kernel panic and gets into a loop of retry message-Apple symbol-message-etc. The SSD shows on the desktop, but does not show as a startup disk in System Preferences pane. Disk Utilities shows drive is fine, but repair of permissions is grayed out. Window says permissions repair is only permitted on OS installed with an Apple installer. System folder on the SSD does not show the "blessed" symbol. Have tried recloning using Time Machine backup - same result. Installed eDrive on SSD with TechToolsPro, and can start up in eDrive thru TTP window, thus verifying all cabling. After booting with original internal HD installed in external case, SSD will show on desktop, but will disappear in a few minutes after a message says it was improperly ejected. Suggestions? Is there a way to access OS 10 software purchased and downloaded from Apple site?
Many possibilities here. Maybe a bad connection when you installed the drive. Maybe a bad drive. Maybe a bad SATA cable.
How did you format the drive? Should be Mac OS Extended Journaled. When you boot into the recovery drive, access disk utility from there and see if you can access the drive.
I have the same drive as you. What I did is use Disk Utility from the recovery drive of TM. I first re-formatted the SSD drive. Then I used Disk Utility to restore the whole drive of my original to the new SSD drive.
You can still download the Yosemite installer from the App Store in your purchases providing you downloaded it from the App Store already.

I replaced my existing hard drive with a new Crucial MX100 256GB SSD. Had no problems installing the SSD and installed OS X Yosemite via usb key.
Problem I have is cannot boot to this SSD at all. I tried setting it as the startup disk but it doesn't appear in the list of disks.
But I checked it with Disk Utility and it's mounted. I ran a verify disk and no errors where found. I also erased it and set it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
But still cannot bootI created a new parition with a GUID partition table but still doesn't work. Still don't get the option to isntall to my SSD when i boot up with my Yosemite install USB. I also tried to make it the Startup Disk but it doesn't appear in that screen.
Could it be the data cable? Here's a screen shot of what I see in Disk Utility (sorry about the spotlight search bar) -
T410 will not boot with new SSD
I've cloned my HDD to a new SSD, but it will not boot. It goes into a Lenovo Think Bios splash screen / Black screen loop. I booted off a repair disk and performed a repair, but it is still doing the bios loop thing. This has happened with both an OCZ and a Kingston SSD. Any ideas? Thanks...
Solved!
Go to Solution.I'm going to venture a guess that the drive was not cloned properly.
The "new" drive must be in the machine's HDD bay, and the "old" one in the USB enclosure.
I always use Clonezilla for the rare occasions that I actually clone something, but Acronis should do just fine as well.
Good luck.
Cheers,
George

My late 2012 mac mini boots slow with new ssd drive
So here is the situation. I purchased a 128gb ssd drive, installed it a usb enclosure, formatted it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), cloned it with carbon copy cloner 3, used the option key during boot up and selected the ssd drive and it booted my mac mini and it functioned perfectly. I than tested it for dozens of reboots and it worked fine. I then took apart my mac mini and removed the original hard drive and installed the new ssd drive. When I boot to the ssd drive it still takes 47 to 53 seconds just like the old drive. Aren't ssd drives supposed to be a lot faster?
My solution or tip is as follows; The reason it takes so long to boot is because the mac mini doesn't know you replaced the old drive and it is looking for it during the boot process. Finally it can't find the drive so it boots to the ssd drive. All you have to do to correct this is click on "system preferences", select and click on "startup disk" and select your ssd drive and click on "restart". After these steps your mac mini will now boot in about 17 seconds. Issues solved.Yes, my solution fixed the issue. I went from a 47 to 53 second boot time to a 17 second boot time. The ssd drive is significantly faster than the original drive that came with my late 2012 mac-mini. This is my first post and I wasn't sure how to post this as a tip. I have another tip regarding usb 3.0 hubs.

Permissions problem with new SSD boot drive
I recently installed an OWC SSD drive as a boot drive on an iMac I've had for many years. I’m having some sort of permissioning error that I can’t figure out how to resolve.
I’ve setup the SSD as the boot drive (created user named “Boot Admin”). 10.9.3. All data and files remain on my old spinning disk
When the computer first boots, as expected, I’m presented with 2 users at the login screen (“Boot Admin”; Original User Account). If I choose my old user account, I receive the following error:
"You are unable to log in to the user account “<name of original user account>" at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred.”
If I choose the Boot Admin user I’m able to login without issue as the Boot Admin user (no access to my original apps and data). At that point, I can choose Log Out from the Apple menu and then login using my old user account. When I follow that sequence, I’m able to login with no issues. Apps are there, data is accessible etc. I can enjoy the speed of the SSD.
Although, if browse within Finder to the Boot Admin user on the hard drive, none of the folders are accessible (the little red icon is on the folders). Similarly, if I boot straight into the Boot Admin user and browse to my original User on the hard drive, none of its folders are accessible!
I am at a loss on how to troubleshoot. Ideally, I would like to login in directly to my old user account (eliminate the 2 step — login to Boot Admin, log out, login to Original User) and have full file access to things within both the Boot Admin user and my original user account.
Any guidance or tips on how to troubleshoot? thanks in advanceI appreciate the continued assistance. I'm clearly overlooking something and Google is not my friend! I've tried.
At the expense of repeating myself, I'll share my current configuration:
10.9.3
2 hard drives (new SSD with name "Boot Drive" and original spinning disk "Macintosh HD")
Startup Disk in System Preferences is "Boot Drive"
"Macintosh HD" has 3 User Folders: bootadmin, jayelevy, shared
jayelevy is my home folder - all my documents are in tact
bootadmin has the normal home folder structure
"Boot Drive" has 3 User Folders: bootadmin, jayelevy, shared
jayelevy is empty; no folders
bootadmin has the normal home folder structure (Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Movies, etc), but each is empty with the exception of Movies and Pictures. I've moved my Aperture databases to these 2 folders to take advantage of the speed of the SSD
When I restart the iMac I'm presented with 2 user choices: jayelevy and bootadmin
If I initially select jayelevy, I receive the error mentioned at the start of the thread
If I initially select bootadmin, I can login without issue, but get the standard Mac desktop (not my home).
If I then log out of bootadmin (not restart, but logout) and then choose jayelevy, the signin completes successfully and my desktop/home folder is restored to it's normal and expected condition.
I am still trying to avoid this step of login/logout/login.
I imagine I'm overlooking the obvious, but I'm in uncharted grounds for me! Here I thought the hardware swap to replace my optical drive with SSD would be the hard part. That was simple! I've stumbled on the software side! -
T420 won't boot with new Samsung 840 Pro SSD
Hi all
I seem to have a failed brand new SSD. Before I RMA it, please help me spot my stupid mistake
I've just used Samsung data migration to copy my C drive to a Samsung 840 Pro 128GB SSD as usual.
I went into device driver, and set the SSD to cache writes, so the SSD was working then.
I removed the 320GB SSD, installed the SSD and rebooted.
After the BIOS flash screen, the system halts with a funny symbol on the screen and a flashing cursor.
It responds to Ctrl Alt Del. but doesn't get as far as testing the DVD drive.
After replacing the SSD with the HDD and rebooting, all is fine again ...
The BIOS shows AHCI mode, and the SSD and contents (in a USB3 drive caddy) are visible and readable.
I can't use Samsung SSD magician because it won't see the SSD over USB (clever!), so can't work out how to upgrade firmware.
This is an i5, 8GB, 320GB machine with 1600x900 screen, with XP Pro 64-bit.
What gives?? Others here have posted with working 840 Pros in a T420, so I think it's compatible.
Could this be a SATA2/SATA3 thing or AHCI? I can't see any SATA2/3 control in the BIOS - does it just auto-negotiate?
Most grateful for any suggestions and thanks in advance
Solved!
Go to Solution.Hi woothoot,
I'm not familiar with the Samsung data migration tool. Is it actually cloning the drive, or just copying files and settings?
With ThinkPads, it is usually recommended to have the target drive installed in the laptop and the source on the external connection. Doing it the other way sometimes results in a non-booting drive.
Can you rearrange things so that you do the clone op with the SSD installed in the T420?
Z.

'No Entry Sign' on Macbook Boot-up with new SSD
Hi Everyone,
I'm a first time poster looking for some help.
I recently installed a new SSD (Samsung 830 128GB 2.5") in my white Macbook (2,1).
After buying the SSD I did a clean install of Mac OS X Mountain Lion, however, due to not having a physical disc, I performed the install using my iMac, the Mountain Lion DMG, and the new SSD in an enclosure. The install seemed to go fine and my iMac will boot up from the SSD with no problems, but when I try to put the SSD in the Macbook, I get a 'No Entry' sign and no sign of life.
I have tried putting the SSD in an enclosure and tried to boot it with the Macbook by holding 'Option' to choose my start-up disk. When I do this, it reads both the 'Macintosh HD' and the 'Recovery HD' but when I click on either option to boot, it shows the 'No Entry' sign. Is there anyone who could suggest anything - any help would be greatly appreciated.
Mr FlollopI have now managed to get Mountain Lion working on my Macbook - even though as Mike has correctly pointed out, it is not in the system requirements.
I believe the problem lay with installing Lion on the SSD via a different machine than the one the SSD was meant for - though this should not have been the case.
I ended up installing the SSD in the Macbook and booting Mountain Lion install from a USB stick - it worked and Mountain Lion is running well on my machine. -
Mountain Lion and Mavericks with new SSD
I tried Yosemite on my MBA (mid-2011) and lost my hard drive. Apple replaced it with an SSD at no charge
since my Apple Care had only recently expired. Now I need to find my 2013 tax return on my Seagate
external hard drive but cannot find it on Time Machine backups. Can you help me?
The lost hard drive was using Mountain Lion. The new SSD has Mavericks.Well, the only place for your records would be on your backup(s). The hard drive was replaced, so there is nothing there unless Apple restored all your data from your old drive to the new one after the replacement. If they didn't, then your only hope is your backup.

Snow Leopard will not boot on new SSD
I purchased a 120 GB SSD for my 2007 MBP (A1226) and installed it. The old drive crashed and I am looking for a clean install - not time machine. I have tried to boot from the OSX 10.6 Install Disk but it keeps getting stuck!
1. I power on the MBP
2. When the chime sounds, I hold down the option button
3. The screen gives me the option to select the disk
4. The apple logo is displayed and the little spinning wheel thing goes on for a while
5. It goes to a light blue/gray screen and then doesn't do anything.
I'd really appreciate some guidance. I am not proficient at computer repairs. I'm just trying to get this machine spun up for my wife and kids to use for email/internet.
Thanks!
FinchHello,
First, you have to erase (format) the new SSD drive before installation.
I first watched this video:

Here it is also step by step:
Upgrading Your MacBook Pro with a Solid State Drive
Good luck! -
I installed a new SSD with the operating system loaded, and I can boot from it by selecting it in the bios before boot. It's listed as the drive letter I. The boot SSD that came with the computer - a 16 gb ssd - is not listed under My Computer with a drive letter. It doesn't show at all. The existing C hard drive is actually a 2TB storage drive without the OS.
How do I change the computer settings so the machine uses the new SSD - letter I -to boot upon startup? Can I change it to "C" and rename the storage hard drive and 16 gb ssd to new letters?
Thanks for yourhelp!Hi,
The 16 MB mSATA SSD that came with the PC is a hard drive caching device and is only visible via the Control Panel --Intel Rapid Storage Technology Utility. You do not want to use the caching device with the SSD.
What 'new" operating system did you install on the SSD? What size is the new SSD?
Bottom line: You have yourself into a mess right now.
Before you do anything, backup your data and crate the HP external recovery media.

Macbook pro hard drive transfer to new i7 Mac Mini with new SSD
I've seen some of the threads on drive transfer but wanted to get more input. I currently have late 2008 Macbook Pro with 750gb hard drive running Lion latest version. I bought a new Mac Mini i7 with dual 500 gb drives. I also have new SSD 512gb. I want to use SSD as boot drive for Mac Mini and install 750gb drive as 2nd drive. I know how to remove and install the drives. What is best sequence, software and procedure to execute the exchange? Any help would be greatly appreciated in advance.
Hello,
Not clear on your circumstances, but...
Best way to get an exact bootable copy of your old drive to the new one is with Carbon Copy Cloner...

Can't get Pc to boot with new GPU
Hello. I have a hinkstation e20 422221G with Xeon CPU x3440 @ 2.53g running win 7 ultimate. I understand this CPU has no onboard video capabilties. I have had a quadro fx 380 card in there but wanted to upgrade, so purchased an asus r7 250x I also upgraded the PSU to 500w. When I turn the PC on, the fans come on etc but no boot. I have updated bios to version 5jkt65aus which is the latest available. I also have another issue in that windows states only 1.94gb ram is usable, when infact there is 4gb. I am running win 64x and there is no maximum memory setting. Have tried to look through BIOS to see if there was perhaps a setting where memory was being reserved for video etc, but can't find it. Any suggestions? Your help would be appreciated
First things first, we don't support aftermarket PSUs or desktop/gaming video cards in these systems so there's no guarantees either will work.
With that said, does your system boot whatsoever with the new PSU installed and the rest of the system as it shipped from the factory? ie: does it boot with the new PSU and the FX380 installed? If not then your PSU either isn't pinned correctly at the main connector or isn't supplying power to the correct locations.
If the PSU does work and it's only the Asus R7 250X then the simple answer here is that the card is unsupported. This is either due to the amount of power required or that the E20 doesn't have enough addressing space in the BIOS to handle a 2GB video card. In this case, hopefully your retailer allows returns as Lenovo cannot provide a workaround for such an issue on this old of a system.
I wish I had better news for you here but trying to turn a commercial workstation into a gaming system isn't without challenges. -
Data transfer when replacing HD with new SSD
I understand how to physically replace my old HD (mid 2009 macbook pro) with my new SSD, but I'm not sure how to go about the data transfer using time machine. It sounds simple if you're not running OS Lion, but I am, which seems to complicate things. Will the following steps work?
1. Install new SSD
2. Boot computer from original OS 10.6 Install DVD
3. Format new SSD to Mac OS Extnded (Journalled)
3. Install OS 10.6 onto new SSD from DVD
4. Update OS software as far as possilbe pre-lion
5. Install Lion from App store (previously purchased)
6. Re-boot and use migration assistant to transfer all apps and files from my most recent time machine backup

I've installed a new Crucial m500 ssd hard drive into my late 2008 macbook pro but when I start it up i'm getting a disc symbol with a question mark. Can anyone advise please?
I think I may need to clone the new drive first but I don't have a SATA cable and I kind of wanted to start fresh. I have backed up my data onto Time machine stored on my WD mybook live so I thought I could reinstall from there once I had installed the new SSD into the macbook.
I've never done this before and not so great with Mac's or Pc so any advice would be a huge help.

You're getting the disk symbol and question mark because there's no OS on the new SSD.
Another method to do this would be to reinstall your old drive. Create a USB thumb drive (4GB) Recovery HD using the OS X Recovery Disk Assistant. You will need to download the Disk Assistant first then run it against your thumb drive. This puts the Recovery HD from your internal drive onto the thumb drive. Then reinstall your SSD and boot into your thumb drive via selecting it when pressing the Option/Alt key. From the thumb drive you'll have the OS X Utilities menu so you can format your SSD and install OS X. And during Setup of OS X for your SSD you can use your Time Machine back up (if you have one) to migrate user accounts, data and apps.
