Cannot bootup from cdrom-drive or from harddisks

This is quite a post, main point is: I cannot succesfully bootup my desktop from either a cdrom or my hard disks after a normal reboot. After a cold reboot (power off for about 30-40 seconds) it will bootup but will randomly reset or freeze up.
It started with me browsing a website with chromium-svn, chromium told me that the website might contain malware, but I wasn't really worried since I was using linux and browsing under a normal user account. Then a java window popped up, something concerning settings, and my system became very slow. I tried to click away the java window but my X server crashed and put me back into KDM. I fired up a console (Ctrl+Alt+F1) and did "ps aux" to see if my system was compromised and strange processes were running. That wasn't the case, but as soon as I logged out the terminal disabled itself claiming it had too much input or something like that (it's a couple of days ago I don't remember the details). So I resetted my desktop and now grub wouldn't start up. It just gave a strange character in the top left corner and froze up. A cold reboot did give me grub back, but it wouldn't let me into linux, somehow my partitions wouldn't mount. After that I tried my windows XP dual boot, that worked althrough it suffered from random resets.
Thinking something was wrong with my harddisk I tried rebooting with Parted Magic livecd. That failed, as did rebooting with the official arch livecd and with several other livecds. All giving some fault that they couldn't find/mount the cdrom, while the innitial bootup from the cdroms all went good. A cold reboot fixed that problem, but all suffered from random resets and lock-ups.
After that I thought is was a hardware component, so I tried pulling them out one by one to see what the problem might be. It wasn't the harddisk, for I nuked the partition table and pulled it ou (I have two harddisks, so pulling one out is a possibility). I also replaced the cdrom drive. Then I pulled out a new memory module (I bought one a few weeks ago) to see if that was the problem, but it wasn't. I also updated the BIOS to see if the problem was there, but to no avail. As a last ditch effort I replaced the CMOS battery and resetted the BIOS properly. But all had no effect.
I runned Memtest, but it detected no errors. Currently I have no idea what is wrong other than that it is broken. By process of elimination I'm fairly confident that it isn't the harddisk, nor the cdrom-drive nor the memory.
During the bootup from the archlinux install cd the kernel messages do indicate that it detects sda as a harddisk and sdb as a cdrom drive, while I have 2 harddisks and one cdrom drive. So it should detect sda and sdb as harddisks and sdc as a cdrom drive. Also it gives the following error:
waiting for boot device
error: boot device didn't show up after 30 seconds
And also:
usb 2-2: device description read/64, error -71
and much more of that with errors: -110, 1790, -22
Also this:
hub 5-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 2
My hyphothesis is that my southbridge (which deals with the cdrom, harddisk drives and the usb devices) is somehow broken.
I'd like to have your oppinion on this, or at least confirm if my cdrom, harddisk etc. really aren't culpable in this problem so I might reuse them. Right now my solution would be to buy a new motherboard/CPU/memory and reuse all the other components.
EDIT: My hardware is:
CPU: AMD Athlon64 3500+
Motherboard: Asus A8V-E SE (Northbridge: VIA K8T890 | Southbridge: VIA VT8237R )
Memory: 2 GB
HDD: 2x SATA-150
CDROM: DVD-writer
System ran ok from 2006

Well your testing and conclusion seem correct, but maybe before buying new stuff, try booting those drives using a different machine, if there are no problems... then go ahead and get the new board.
Testing the drives with a different machine will need to wait untill after the holidays. However the disks are not that old, one is almost brand new, and nothing has given me an indication that something is wrong with the disks itself. So I think it is a safe assumption that the disks themselves are good, but it won't hurt to check I guess.
Remove the hard drives (or at least their cables) and boot a Live Linux CD from the CDROM drive. Same issues? If yes, and you have checked memtest as you said then either you have a motherboard or CPU fault. At that point remove your CPU and renew the heat sink compound and reseat the CPU. If that does not work probably a motherboard fault as you suspect.
Removed the cables and booted with a Live CD, problem remained. Althrough this time I've been rewarded with a kernel panic, still couldn't find the booted cdrom device. I renewed the heat sink compound a few months ago so I'm fairly confident it is still good. I did that because my CPU overheated, and I've kept a good eye on the temperature sensors ever since. Besides I know what happens if my CPU overheats so I'm pretty sure it is not overheating. Should the problem be a broken CPU, well that would almost be the same as a broken motherboard and I would have to replace both of them. I cannot easely find replacement parts for either the cpu or the motherboard, socket 939 has become obsolete.

  • Cannot load two cdrom drives, (code 10)

if i try to have two cdrom drives running at the same time, a dvdrom drive and a cdrw drive, the cdrw drive has an error.  it says "This device cannot start. (Code 10)"  how can i fix this?
If i try to use either individually it will work, i don't understand what Code 10 is though.

I have major probs with ide as well when I have all of the slots filled.  I have an 80 gig and a 20 gig as well as a cd reader and writer.  When I used the 20 gig attached (a fugitsu) in several differant place once as slave to the 80 and then as master to the writer after a couple of reboots I noticed that when the fugitsu was getting listed by the bios something strange happened it showed up in upper and lower case letters.  I never saw that happen before but after I noticed it I could no longer access the drive in windows and the bios detected it as a 14? gig drive using auto and trying it manually.  This occurred twice and on differant channels.  This did not correct itself by resetting the bios or shutting down the power.  I was only able to correct it by physically removing the drive.  I put back and it was normal again but it did it again later so I just pulled it.  So in my opinion this board has some ide issues in addition to being one of the most picky boards I have seen when it comes to slave and master position on the cables.  And theres another joke why in gods name is the master supposed to be attached on the end of the ide 80pin cable when in every computer the hd is below the cdr makes thing a real pain in the ass.
ps the iomagic 24x10x40 drive is a btc remark and I am using it again due to its ability to burn safedisk2 cd's but I liked the 20 gig to boot into linux becuz the 80 gig has probs with grub and lilo and trying to "correct " made XP unbootable and partition magic choked as well

  • Cannot copy files to/from external drive

    Hi All,
Bit of a cry for help.  I run an iMac 3.06 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo with 10.7.3 and I'm having some serious problems with an external drive.  Some history first - I have a large iTunes library (~3Tb) of everytype of media which I stored on an external NAS (iomega StorCenter) with no problems - then this NAS started to report a drive error with imminent failure.  I purchased a new DAS (Western Digital) drive and moved all my content from the NAS to the DAS and everything was ok.  Then I started to get errors through iTunes about cannot find the file and cannot read the files - and then I couldn't access anything on the drive.  At this time I thought this was a different problem because I was running preview Mountain Lion, or there was an actual fault with the disk.  After investigation, and coughing out for Data Rescue 3 I found that somehow the entire file structure had been corrupted and all my files had been orphaned.  So at this point I had one dying NAS drive and one DAS which wasn't usable and no space to recover any files to.
So - next step was to purchase another external drive (and returned the WD) - this time I went for a G-Raid 4Tb (non-thunderbolt) drive and I've been in the process of recovering files from backups and iTunes.  I've had no problems until today when yet again I've started getting errors and now I have problems copying files to/from this G-Raid drive.
      Technical details - OS-X 10.7.3 - G-Raid 4Tb formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) - currently showing 1,163 folders and 15,452 files.
Symptoms - using finder drag and drop copy a file from the g-Raid to desktop results in 'The operation can't be completed because the item 'xxx' is in use. - 'The operation can't be completed because one or more required items can't be found (error code -43).' and the copy fails.
Using the cp command I get a 'Resource Busy' error.
However, this is not for all files - I've managed to copy all my books back to the desktop ok, when a couple came up with the above error I tried again and it copied successfully.
I have run Disk Utility - here are the details :-

and it's just got worse - in getting the info for this post I no longer have access to the drive.
This is the second time this has now happened on two different directly connected drives (USB and Firewire) - which means the problem is elswhere.  I've a stack of errors in the system.log file

I'm now out of ideas and when I got in touch with G-Tech support I got "Unfortunately the drive seems to have been corrupted. You can try to retrieve the data using third party data recovery software such as Data Rescue 3. You can find the software at a discounted rate at the following page:http://www.thedatarescuecenter.com/gtech-data-recovery-software.html  If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask."
any help/advice/pointers very much appreciated as I really don't want to have to start recovering again :-(
    Thanks all.

    Hi Ncat,
I might have had similar problems with yours. Finder stuck at 'Not Responding' while I boot my Macbook Pro with external HDD plugged in, my macbook heats up considerably maybe because it keeps trying to access the external disk. And Finder can only proceed after I unplugged my external hard disk.
    So what I did was:
I rebooted my macbook into recovery mode (by holding cmd+R before / during the booting chime
I used the Disk Utility from there (instead of from normal booting)
Then I proceed to with 'Repair Permissions' and 'Repair Disk' for each and every partition of the external harddisk, and also my internal hard disk.
Rebooted after everything's done, and now it seems to work.
I hope that it will work for you

  • Installing from an external usb cdrom drive

I am able to boot an external usb cdrom drive but I cannot figure out how to mount that usb cdrom drive to complete the install.
    My boot command is:
    arch-scsi NEEDUSB=auto
I cannot run loaddisk, as it does not find the usb cdrom, so I cannot load the addon utilities (thus I cannot modprobe usb-storage).
I can run /arch/setup but when it gets to package selection, I am unable to select the CDROM source. This machine is not on the net, so I cannot do a ftp install.
Has anyone else installed ARCH using an external USB cdrom drive ?
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you Xentac for you help. I looked up the bug report and understand the problem. Now how do I proceed from here?
Any suggestions on a work around? Should I rebuild the 0.7 beta disk with additions to the initrd? Eventually, I will need to install Arch on about twenty standalone systems. They do not have cdrom's in them, and are not on a network. Sounds like I may have to open up the units and plug a cdrom in for the install
I was thinking of cloning the disk (i.e. open up unit, take hard drive out, put in another system and clone), but it has been pointed out that doing a basic install is a good way of testing the hardware. It doesn't take very long and we have to do testing of our software anyways.
    I open to suggestions!

After upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion I cannot access a PGP drive which was generated under snow leopard. PGP does not start. When I try to start I just receive a message that Lion cannot work with PGP. How can I now access important and confifential informatio which I have stored in PGP (snow leopard). Do I have to move back to snow leopard. If so, how can I do this?

  • How to mount USB & CDROM drives from single user mode - Solaris boot disk?

    Hi All,
I need to carry out ufsrestore on a single newly replaced system disk (no redundancy / mirroring) from either USB or CDROM drives from the following steps:
    ( i ) GRUB => e, e, cdrom –s, Enter, b (boot from Solaris 10 x86 media).
( ii ) Choose menu 1 for Install Solaris Interactive Mode to reach single user mode.Below are the commands that I have tried in single user mode without success:
mount –r –F pcfs /dev/dsk/c1t0d0p0 /cdrom (after unmount Solaris CD)
mount: /dev/dsk/c1t0d0p0 is not a DOS filesystem.
    svcadm –v enable smserver
svcadm: Pattern ‘smserver’ doesn’t match any instances
    svcadm enable autofs
svcadm: Pattern ‘autofs’ doesn’t match any instances
    devfsadm
devfsadm: mkdir failed for /dev 0s1ed: Read-only file system
    mkdir /mnt
mkdir: Failed to make directory “/mnt”; Read-only file systemPart of the problem is due to the current READ ONLY filesystems which does not allow the creation of mount point such as /mnt.
I have been able to create both / root (/dev/dsk/c1t0d0s0) and /export/home (/dev/dsk/c1t0d0s0) filesystems with newfs that are awaiting for restore using ufsrestore.
The only option I am left with is to attach a secondary disk to install Solaris 10 on either of them before bring the system to multi-user mode so that service such as volmgt, autofs, volfs are available to access USB & CDROM drives.
Any suggestion on how to resolve this issue?
    Many thanks,
    Jack

    Hi JKGN,
Is the directory a located under the root filesystem. ie /a? Are there any other mount point for say USB drive as well? I am not in a position to try it out right now but will get back
to you soon on whether /a exist or not.
Btw, the last thing I managed to do on this system at the time was added a secondary 1TB internal disk with the intention to restore both / and /export/home data onto this disk while
making use of all the disk device management services such as the following services only available in a fully installed Solaris system (both single & multi-user modes) installed on the
    primary disk:

As a result, I am left with no option but the need to rebuild this system with only a single primary disk while in single user mode. However, the single user mode that I am in is the
one from Solaris installation disk with restrictive (_cannot create folder for mount point or running disk management utilities_) capability such as those services just covered, compared to one from a completed Solaris installation system with full access to all filesystems and utilities / commands in general.
I would very much value your assistance on how to mount both CD & USB in this restrictive limited Read Only OS (assume that it is running from memory) in order to get complete access to
the blank primary disk so that full restore with ufsrestore could take place.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jack

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
When you try to copy data to the external drive, what happens? If you don't see any error, the external drive is formatted in NTFS, and OS X can't write in it.
To be able to write on this external drive, you have to use an app like Paragon NTFS. Another solution would be to format the external drive in FAT32 or exFAT with Disk Utility > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html Make sure you copied all the files of the external disk to the internal disk before doing it

It sounds like you're trying to replace a home folder. Replace the contents of the folder instead, or use Migration Assistant.

  • Help diagnos. flashing question mark on monitor, cannot boot from CD drive

Any ideas? This is an older G3 tower which was "souped Up" wtih USB and Firewire cards, memory
Mac froze in midst of work last week. Now only get flashing question mark supermimposed on image of a floppy drive.
Tried to re install system (OS9) but cannot get ANY CD to boot from CD drive. I reboot, hold down "C" Key with CD in tray ( and i can hear the CD drive working). But the tray opens and ejects/rejects the CD).
I now suspect the problem is NOT the OS but rather a hardware issue.
Am I correct in this assumption? what else could this be?
I am trying to help an older gentleman who has no backups and has some important documents on the HD.If I can boot up, might be able to retrieve those itesm. (and get a newer Mac!)

    Not the answer,Dale (thanks anyway)
    I read that article.
I cannot boot from any bootable CD.
Inserted the OS install disk as well as third party bootable CD.
with CD in the CD drive tray, I restarted and held down the C key.
Mac restarted but the CD tray popped open. Would not boot from the CD.
That is why I posted query
not only do we have the flashing question mark but bootable CDs are not booting this Mac. So I can do no diagnostics, no repair, not salvage of files.
I am trying to understand where the problem lies. am guessing Hard Drive failure but why should CD also not work?

  • Cannot boot from USB drive!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi
I have 3-4 120Gb 2.5inch drives which I clone my MacBook Pro to on rotation.
I have always been able to boot from these drives UNTIL NOW!
Suddenly I can no longer boot from them, the boot process starts and gets well through and then the drives all seem to just 'hang'.
The only significant change is that a local Apple support company upgraded my stock 120gb drive to a 160Gb drive.
Any ideas what the issue coiuld be?
    Cheers.
    Robin

    Hi robster,
If the USB drive contains a valid OS you should be able to verify and repair the permissions on that drive, give that a try.
Also i suggest running DiskWarrior 4 on it.
The replaced internal drive should have no effect on this unless some settings got changed when the new OS got installed on it that now prevents the mac from being able to read your USB drive.
Does the USB drive need a driver ? if so is the latest version of that driver properly installed ?
If the USB drive checks out and all is OK maybe a re-install of the OS on your internal drive would help.
For now try disk utility and diskwarrior if you can that could narrow things down

  • Cannot boot from ext drive after 10.5.2 update

I followed the procedure in tech article 306502 for creating and updating a bootable drive. I am in a PPC Mini environment. External drive is LaCie 160 GB rugged firewire portable with auxiliary power, I created the drive with 10.5.1 and it booted nicely to my two Minis (running 10.3.9 and 10.5.1). I then updated the external system with 10.5.2 from the Apple site and now it does not boot. Sits and spins with a white screen, grey apple, and whirligig. Whirled for 1/2 hour and tried deveral times.
I see this is not uncommon, but there have been no cures posted. One post suggested Disk Warrior. What would I do to with DW to move this problem forward. This is quite annoying, as I rely on being able to move around and boot from this drive when needed.
    Thanks for any help.
    Fred

after 10.5.2 two days ago, mine booted up regularly. however after the additional leopard graphics update last night, it no longer boots up at all. i have to usethis ****** vista to report the problem. my macbook is right beside me, with nothing but a plain blue screen. occasionaly the mouse cursor appears for about 30 seconds, then dissapears and the screen remains blue. what can i do? if i cant log in apple cant update my mac!!! help!!!

  • Hard Driver Transfer from old G4

Well got my new Mac Pro, took 8 hours to find right configuration for it, it's picky, heh. Anyway another problem. Got a Old G4 as seen below. And have many hard drives Would like to access, however, HUGE problem is that the Mac Pro Cannot see any of them connected through Any USB2 Device Connectors. Disk utility only see's it as unformatted media. However they still work fine connected to G4. I would like to transfer all these files over. Any Solutions? right now transferring it over via ftp but that is a pain.

Well i was in the same situation (i have a G3) and this is what i did:
    1. removed drive from G3
    2. attached drive to optical drive bay
    3. carefully put bay back in (drive doesnt fit as it just sits within the carrier, so make sure that you dont bump the macpro during bootup)
    4. close door, boot up and then transfer files from old drive to new drive(s)
its a breeze considering how accessible drives are in the G3/G4's etc..

  • Can't import library from External drive to new compueter.

I guess this could be more of a Windows 8 issue but maybe someone knows what I can do.  My old 2006 Macbook died and I just got a new Windows 8 laptop.  I had my iTunes library on an external drive (formatted in NTFS) because the Macbook had a tiny hard drive.  Anyway, this new laptop has big enough HD that I can copy my library directly to it.  The problem is, I can't...  I opened up two Windows Explorers, one with my old library, and another with the location of the new library.  It should let me just copy the contents from one folder to the other but for some reason it just won't.  I select all the files/folders, drag them over to the new location, and nothing happens.  I tried to copy/paste, both with the right-click menu, as well as keyboard shortcuts, and again nothing.  Not even an error message.  Why won't Windows let me copy the files?  Should I just open up iTunes and drag the files over that way or will that screw things up?  Please help!
    PS.  I'm using Windows 8 64-bit and iTunes 11.1.1.11

If this was used with your MacBook, Macs cannot write to NTFS drives.
So what was on the external drive? WHat do you mean by "library"? Which folders?
    Copy the entire /iTunes/ folder.
Why won't Windows let me copy the files?
    Dunno.
    It's not an iTunes issue.
