They should dump their convoluted system and make do with WPA-based authentication. After all, if someone has the ESSID and pre-shared key to access the network, why demand a password as well?
As for the proxy, it should control access to the outside by IP address, only allowing IP addresses from within the local network to punch out.
While the "belt and braces" approach to system security and integrity is commendable, it also has to bear in mind that the failing in the less-protected system (a student giving out the WLAN details) is the very same thing that will be the failing of the "overkill" system too. After all, if a student can give out WLAN details, they can also give out a username/password combo for the proxy. It makes no sense to make people jump through so many hoops for no real added security.

  • HT4061 I did install the OS7 on my Ipad yesterday, and right now, while browsing internet with safari, the screen turned black, and no way to return to normal

I am lost: I did install iOS7 a couple of days ago, and right now, while browsing internet with Safari, the screen turned black suddenly, and I can't reactivate it anyway (buttons death, screen death)

    Thank you very much!
During the minutes needed  looking for help, I decided to put the magnetic cover on the screen again, and I connected the iPad to the charger. Whe I did uncover the iPad now for a try with your tip (hold sleep and home buttons for about 10 seconds), it came to life again.
    Thank you.
    Best regards,

  • CANNOT BROWSE INTERNET WHILE DOWNLOADING FROM BIT COMET AND PIRATE BAY, WEBPAGES DO NOT LOAD, IT SAYS CANNOT FIND SERVER

My desktop crashed and I had to get a new hard drive and motherboard. I got a new os too, it's win 7 pro. Now when I try to download media from bit comet from any of the torrents on the site I cannot browse the internet. What happens is a page comes up and says "cannot connect to server" and other pages to that affect, but when I stop a download I can browse normally. Why?

Nothing to do with your question, but websites like Bit Comet and Pirate Bay are illegal. Any websites in which you can download paid content for free violates the international piracy laws and you may face a legal penalty for using them.
In response to your question; many of these torrent websites are loaded with viruses. One of these infections may be preventing you from browsing while downloading.

Please try to put a dollar sign ($) before the wireless password.

  • Cannot surf internet with WRT54G v5 on Windows Vista RTM x64

Hi, I have a Linksys WRT54G v5 router with Firmware Version: v1.01.1, Nov. 10, 2006. On Windows Vista x64 I Network conections says that I have Internet access, as a matter of fact Windows Update works fine and downloads some update without any problem.
I tried on two onboard network cards thai I have on my MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum: Nvidia NForce 3 and Realtek RTL8169/8110 Family Gigabit Ethernet NIC. I tried also installing a PCI Realtek network card and no luck at all.
The thing is IE7, MSN, and any application that tries to access Internet cannot connect. IE7 says "address invalid". However on IE7 64 bit surf internet perfectly, everything else fails to surf.
Same router is working fine on Windows XP x64 Edition and 32 bit.
Any ideas would be appreciated.Message Edited by Hernan on 12-23-200610:20 AM

Hi, well check whether after installing the drivers for the Ethernet card whether the pc picks up an IP address. You can check it from start > run > cmd and then ipconfig. If you are unable to pick up an IP address then try to lower the card speed
If still unable to get it working then check with the Microsoft whether the cards do support vista or no.

  • Unable to browse Internet with Sol10 GA

I successfully installed Solaris 10 GA on a Dell GX400. I can see other computers on my network, but when I try to access the Internet, I get errors indicating that the browser cannot find the URLs I input (including sun.com). I cannot see any problem in my nsswitch.conf, resolv.conf, or defaultrouter files in /etc.
Any suggestions about what could be the problem?
    Thanks!
    JDF

First, try 'netstat -nr' and check that you really have the correct default route. Then try 'dig www.sun.com' and check that the correct DNS server is being contacted.

  • Unable to browse internet with wag150n

I recently installed a wag-150n wilress-N ADSL2+ Gateway. I replaces a working 2WIRE router with this one. I ran the setup CD, and it said it completed successfully. I am unable to browse the internet wirless;y or with a wired connection.
If I try and ping a website, say www.google.com,  it replies successfully but I cant browse the internet.
Both wired and wirless connections are getting an IP address. I had changed the IP ad DHCP ranges to 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0 , so that the router is at 192.160.0.1. The clients are starting at 192.168.1.100.
    Help!!!!

If you are able to ping the websites address it means your Gateway is configured for Internet Access...Try to adjust the Browser settings...
Open an IE, click Tools >> Internet Options, then delete all files, cookies, history, forms...Goto "Connections", make sure Never Dial a Connection is checked, click on LAN Settings and make sure all the options are unchecked...Once you are done click on O.k...Close the IE and re-open it...See if you have Internet Access...
Also if you have changed the router's address to 192.168.0.1, your clients should start at 192.168.0.100...

  • I can get my e-mail but cannot browse internet

I am a usually in India but currently in Beijing, China and facing a very strange issue.
I am using a colleague's sim card on my E72. Using this card, I am able to get both my office e-mails using Sybase Mobile Office and the Gmail access that comes with the phone.
But I am unable to browse the internet or use any other GPRS based services like Maps, Snaptu, etc.
My company e-mail allows me to set the connection to use. That is set to "Idea Internet", which comes from my service provide and the access point it uses it "internet".
Since the mails I working, I am assuming that some GPRS connectivity is available. What settings do I need to use it from the Browser?
Thanks in advance for any instructions or pointers.

If this is an iCloud email account, go to System Preferences>iCloud, uncheck Mail, restart your Mac, then go back to System Preferences and check Mail again.  Then test your email and see if it works properly now.

My ipad can pick up the signal that the wifi that is giving off, but when I enter the wifi password. It keeps saying that I am unable to connect to the wifi. I know the password is correct and that I'm not mixing up my wifi with my neighbors wifi. Does anyone think they can help me with my problem or do I need to go to able and get the inside of my ipad looked at? The ipad is a 3 generation with the latest software for it.

It may be helpful to change the password of your wifi network to be absolutely sure you are entering it correctly.  Also, make sure the network name is a unique name (Linksys default is NOT a unique name).

  • [Solved] Cannot browse youtube with firefox?

I noticed this last night, and it is still not working this morning (could very well be something that was changed on youtube's side of things that isn't compatible with Firefox, since it works with Chrome).  Anyway, if I'm watching a video on youtube, and I click another video from the suggested videos / sidebar the page will load (within youtube's frame — red progress bar along the top of the page, and the title / comments will change), however, the previous video will still be playing and the new one will not load until I refresh the page.
Has anyone else noticed this behavior?  Is it a new youtube "feature" or is some configuration incorrect on my side of things?  Thanks.

How are people supposed to narrow down your problem without sitting in front of your screen?
It's not like they can see what plugins and extensions you have installed and so on.
You'll either have to provide those or you'll have to work alone.
hahaha I have no idea, I've tried disabling adobe-flash from within firefox, but not removing it from my system.  But then I just get the "you don't have flash installed" error.  I've also tried disabling my adblocker, but I really don't have many FF extensions installed.  I have to run to class in a few minutes, so I'm hoping someone else has had this issue and will come along.
