Cannot "browse" the internet.

I'm having a somewhat odd problem (aren't we all). My internet connection has recently... slowed to crawl. However, only when browsing using Safari, Firefox, Camino or any other browsers. Testing my connection (via sites such as broadbandreports.com) reports normal speeds. It takes forever to load these speed test sites, but the actual test goes along just fine. Along the same lines I can download files from the internet (assuming I can get them started) just fine.
I can talk on AIM fine, send files around the local network, I can even play various online games just fine. It literally seems like the computer is having a hard time rendering html. But as I have tested it in a number of browsers, created new user accounts, repaired permissons, and even clean installed I feel there must be something more sinister going on.
It will often stall out at "connecting" to various servers. I will get errors saying I am not connected to the internet, or safari (or whatever browser I'm using) cannot find the server (even though I can be IMing in the background). Running the network diagonstics utility will often say the "server" is the problem, but before I can get through with it the server "light" goes back to green. However I am still plagued by slow page loads.
I thought it might be my reuter or cable modem, I have reset both devices multiple times, tried different ethernet cords, and tried different ports on the reuter. I would then assume it was merely my provider being screwy, but I have Windows PC sitting right next to my G5, on the same network, that works just fine.

OK, I'll take a stab-Oh, and there's really nothing "sinister" going on...just misconfigured, perhaps.
It sounds like DNS might be set incorrectly. (Read about DNS).
Go into SystemPreferences>Network>Configure, and see if there are any DNS Servers listed in there (they'll be IP addresses.)
Also look there to see what your router IP address is.
Compare those two numbers.
In the DNS server box, add the IP of your router, and "Apply Changes". Restart the Mac, for good measure.
Test Internet.
If the DNS number already is your router number, find another known good DNS server (Check out what DNS server/s your Win PC is using - Open Command Prompt, type:
ipconfig /all <enter>
and see if you can find DNS server on the display that shows on the PC's little DOS screen.
Stop back and report your results. Good Luck

  • BIZZARE PROBLEM ! N200 cannot browse the Internet but email is working HELP

Bizzare problem I have a Lenovo N200 running Vista Home Premium. The machine was running perfectly until Monday. At the moment I cannot access the Internet. The bizzare thing is that my email works fine and I can send and receive email. But I cannot surf the web on IE. I even installed Firefox and still cannot access the Internet. I have checked the network settings. I am using a LAN cable. The settings are fine. I reset the adapter. I have taken off the anti virus and reinstalled. The weird thing is if I go into the Lenovo recovery while booting up I can access the web on that browser. In Vista in Command Prompt I am able to ping www.google.com and I get a responce. I simply cannot access the Internet from any browser in Vista. Can anyone help? Any ideas? Thanks Mike

    Bizzare...
Have you checked your firewall settings? I know that non-Windows firewalls, if not loaded properly, can block all incoming data. I remember when I uninstalled ZoneAlarm on my main PC once, all data was blocked. And on my Sygate Personal Firewall, if it isn't loaded when Windows boots, any new problems won't be able to use the net until its loaded and exempted from blocking. (This could happen to Windows Firewall too, but I'm not sure).
If that doesn't fix it, not sure what then.

  • Can connect to base station but cannot browse the internet

    Hi,
I have got a MacBook 2GHz Intel Core Duo with Leopard installed (10.5). I have had trouble free wireless internet access for the last 12 months using a Belkin ADSL Router.
Just today I have lost access to the internet completely for both wireless and ethernet.
When I look at the Network dialog for either Airport or Ethernet it says that it is connected and it has got an IP address assigned by the router within the range I would expect. When I use the diagnostic utility it says that everything is fine.
I can browse to the admin pages of the router no problem.
I have reset the router numerous times and also tried the reset of the Mac where you take the battery out and hold the power button down for 5 seconds.
    Nothing has worked.
I have got a PC connected to the same router and it is connecting to the internet fine.
    Any ideas??

    Jon,
Some other thoughts occurred to me...
When did this start? What change, if any occurred just prior to the onset of symptoms?
Have you recently upgraded to Leopard? Did it work after that?
Have you tried connecting to the internet on another wireless network like an internet cafe or a friend's house?
Does your PC, which works, rely on proxy settings to browse through?
Lastly, you asked if your ISP could have caused this. Normally, I would say no because you are connecting to your ISP through a single point and IP address, that of your router. While many ISPs have always wanted to bill their users by the number of computers that are using their services, this has been difficult to do because of the prevalence of IP address sharing granted by the routers that are so common in our homes. It may be possible that your ISP has found a way around this but I remain skeptical.

  • Firefox cannot browse the internet until I clear an "OFF LINE WORKING" ITEM FROM THE MENU ?

How do I clear "off line working?" to allow Firefox to browse the net?

    Presumably you're using FF4 (?).
    If so, do the following.
    * Right click a blank part of the Tab Bar and then click the top option called "Menu Bar". This will remove the orange Firefox button, but reinstate the text links at the top.
    * Next, click "File", then click "Work Offline" to remove the checkmark. You should now have Internet access.
To reinstate the previous layout, repeat the same steps.

  • The 3G symbol is not showing up on my home screen and I cannot browse the net, any suggestions?

The 3G symbol does not show up on my home page and I cannot browse the Internet or receive mail. Any advice?

    reset the iphone
    1. press the wake/sleep button the top until you get the red slider
    2. Slide to power off
    3. Wait for phone to power off (you get a spinning gear icon for a while)
    4. press the wake/sleep button to turn in back on.
if that doesn't work reset network settings
    1. Go to Settings->General->Reset->Reset Network Settings
    2. Confirm that you want to do this and the phone will restart itself
if that doesn't work restore the phone in iTunes, but you will want to sync all of your data before you do that.

  • Cannot longer browse the internet after updated 10.5 to 10.5.8

cannot longer browse the internet after updated 10.5 to 10.5.8

    Did you repair permissions?
Did you backup your data prior to installing?
Are you using any non-Apple routers to connect to the modem?
Is this with a notebook or a desktop Mac?
Are there any other Macs with 10.5.8 or newer that can connect?
Does connecting directly to the modem work via ethernet, or are you on dialup?

  • Unable to browse the internet even though I'm connected the network

I have a new iMac. I can connect to my wireless network via Airport. I can print to my wireless printer but I cannot connect to the internet using a browser (Safari or Firefox). I can ping (e.g., Google.com)successfully but can't connect via a browser. I can connect to a neighbor's unsecured network and browse the internet at will. I have WPA security activated. I have 3 PC's on my home wireless network that connect to the internet with no problem.
I've been on the phone with both Apple and Belkin support all weekend. Apparently the router is working. Apple support has not been able to diagnose my problem. The latest suggestion by Apple technical support is to install Snow Leopard and see what happens.
Has anyone encountered this issue before? I'm new to the iMac world. Always been a PC guy so I'm having difficulty understanding why I can connect to my network but can't browse.

That's interesting I have a similar issue, the wireless suddenly stopped working for me.
I get an IP address assigned, my /etc/resolv.conf file is updated correctly to DNS and I have a properly configured gateway yet I can't ping anything.
This only started happening recently as well.
It is odd that you can ping an address but not surf, have you tried disabling WPA security on your router and seeing if that makes a difference?

  • Is there a way to access the web-based setup for my router if I cannot access the internet?

Okay, I need to change the ip address settings on my router. I have a WRT54G Wireless router. I cannot access the internet on my computer connected to the router, and do not know how to change the router settings without accessing the web-based setup page. So, back to my question. Is there a way to access this page if I cannot connect to the internet?

On the back of the router is a small reset switch. Using a paper clip or other small item, press the switch in and hold it for a few seconds. This will reset the router to the default IP address of 192.168.1.1. Enter that address in your web browser, and be sure your computer is attached to the router by an Ethernet cable. Don't attempt to do this using the wireless connection.
Once you have reached the web configuration utility you can change the DHCP settings.
To give your PC a static IP address you will need to open your network connections panel and, assuming your using Windows XP, make the changes from dynamic IP to static there.

  • Why can't I browse the internet when streaming music?

I am using a Mid 2012 MBP in tip top shape and I have 24MB/s ADSL 2+ with current speed test results of 12.34 Mbps line speed and 1.51 MB/s dl speed. I have 3 things connected to my router MBP, iPhone and Apple TV. Router is D-Link N750. All items listed have latest firmware, updates etc.
My problem is that whenever I am streaming music, either with Spotify or iTunes Radio etc my browsing speed becomes almost unusable and when I then play the music through the Apple TV with Airplay the streaming drops out all the time and I cannot use the internet at all. I have turned off high bitrate streaming etc but nothing is helping.
When I stream through the iPhone on the wireless it all seems to work fine so I think the problem is with the MBP. I have tried reseting PRAM, deleting com.apple.internetconfig.plst etc. but no difference.
Pls help, this is driving me insane!

    Power Cycle
Power off the router. Unplug it from the wall. Wait a while.
Plug it back into the wall. Power the router on. Wait until all the lights are lit properly. It will take a while.
    Restart the computer.
    Start up in Safe Mode.

Just wondering if anyone can help....I do not have a Mac so am finding it difficult to test.
I have just published an online magazine which was initially in the .dnl file format, which has come to light that mac users cannot view.
To try and resolve this I created an .exe file but it would seem that most mac users cannot view this either as they do not have virtual pc etc... which is required to view the .exe file.
I have now created a PDF version which has satidifed some people on macs temporarily but trying desperately to offer something to mac users I thought I had the answer, by uploading the magazine to a browser so it does not require downloading.....but:
The first person to try it out for me got: Safari cannot find the Internet plug-in and on trying to obtain one it could not find one.
I really thought it would work as you do not need the .dnl reader until you try to save the book or detach it to view it on screen.
Does anyone know if there is a way to view the content in a web browser????
Any help would be much appreciated as I do not want to leave the Mac users out.
Here is the link incase anyone fancies trying it for me....any feedback would be appreciated.

  • Slow browsing the Internet

I have a very, very strange issue with my BT Infinity.
When I browse the Internet, 20% of pages I want to open, it takes like 3-10 seconds where the browser stays at 'waiting for xxxxxx' before loading this page (similar to dns issues when a PC cannot resolve an IP address and waits forever). It is weird as it is not the same page every time. I can e.g. open 10 pages without any issues and then 3 pages are slow as hell. When I try them again, sometimes they are fast sometimes not. No obvious connection here...
What I have checked so far:
    - speedtests show 60Mbps/12Mbps, 7-15ms
    - DNS servers hard coded to google and later to open-dns, tested with nslookup - fast and no issues
    - tested with two wired devices - the same problem
    - ping check ran for 24 hours: 99,9999% received, a few pings dropped only!
    - no speed issues, tested with ftp: download speed was around 7MBps and stable
    - no issues with Skype (including video skype).
    - tried different browsers on these two PCs
Not sure what else I can do. I can imagine it will be a nightmare trying to explain it to a 1st line support BT engineer over the phone...

Well, just a suggestion for something to look at. Do you use any ad-blocking software?
I ask becasue I use a customised hosts file to block most ad-serving sites, and one effect of this is that some websites seem to be coded to wait for a response or a time-out from the advert server before loading their own pages. One forum I use will sit there blank for 15 seconds if it wants to send me a new advert from the Google ad-servers, because I have them blocked via hosts. Some other sites are similarly slow to load.
    It's an irritation, but as it's self-inflicted I can't really complain!
