Cannot burn CDs-Calibration Error

I get this error when trying to burn CDs from Itunes, "The device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media." Any suggestions? Is it broken?
Thanks
Bill

I have been looking around for an answer for you as well, I did find this post on another board, it may be of some help.
"If you're having trouble burning a CD or DVD, check the following:
Make sure you're trying to burn a CD or DVD from a playlist (a list of songs) that you've created in the iTunes Source list. You can't burn a disc directly from your library, from the Radio, from a shared playlist, or from a playlist that's on your iPod. For more information about creating playlists or a CD, click "Tell me more."
If you're not seeing the songs you expect on a CD or DVD you've burned, or if nothing happens when you click the Burn Disc button, make sure the selected playlist includes the songs you want, and that the songs are checked. Only checked songs are burned to the CD or DVD.
If you want to create an audio CD, make sure you have an Apple CD-RW drive or SuperDrive. Some third-party CD-RW drives may also work with iTunes. To see if iTunes works with an external drive, choose iTunes > Preferences, then click the Burning button. If your drive is listed, it will work with iTunes.
Make sure you've chosen the correct disc format for the files you're trying to burn to your CD or DVD. To create an audio CD, you need to choose Audio CD in the Burning pane of iTunes Preferences. To create a CD with any type of audio file that iTunes supports (MP3, AAC, AIFF, and so on), you need to choose "Data CD or DVD" in the Burning pane of iTunes Preferences. For more information, click "Tell me more."
If your playlist includes songs that were purchased from the iTunes Music Store, you can only burn seven copies of the playlist to an audio CD. You may have exceeded the number of times you can burn this playlist.
If your playlist includes songs that were purchased from the iTunes Music Store that have not been authorized to play on this computer, CD burning stops. To authorize this computer to play the music purchases, double-click the purchased song (where CD burning stopped) and enter the ID and password for the account with which the song was purchased. If you've already authorized five other computers to play the song, you won't be able to play it on this computer until you deauthorize one of the five already authorized computers. For more information about authorization and deauthorization, click "Tell me more."
If your computer or monitor goes to sleep while you're burning a CD, you might encounter problems with the disc or with iTunes. To keep your system from going to sleep when burning CDs, increase the sleep timing settings in the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences. For more information, search for "saving energy" in Mac Help.
If you've made a CD and it seems to stutter when played back in your external CD-RW drive, try playing it in your internal CD drive or in a stereo system. Some external drives may not play CDs properly.
If your CD burn is unsuccessful and your external drive becomes unresponsive, turn its power off and on to reset the drive.
If you can't eject a blank CD after you've inserted it, click the Eject button in iTunes.
If the playlist you're trying to burn to a CD or DVD includes AAC files, make sure you don't have MP3 CD selected in the Burning pane of iTunes Preferences. You can only burn a playlist that contains AAC files using the Audio CD or Data CD format.
For more troubleshooting information, visit the Apple Support website at www.apple.com/support/itunes.
I strongly suggest a different brand of CD-R disc."

    Please help.
    Steve

iPods don't look for the library. iTunes does.
I recently moved my itunes music folder
    Don't move your music folder.
    Let iTunes do it.
Point iTunes prefs to the location where you wan tit.
Then go to menu Advanced -> *Consolidate library*.
This will copy the iTunes music folder to the location in iTunes prefs.

  • Cannot burn CDs - Error 4261

So the deal is that I used to be able to burn with this cmputer fine using itunes. All of a sudden, it stopped being able to burn, giving me an unknown error (4261). I thought this was because I updated to version 6, so i installed version 5. I still cannot burn anything. I have tried to find firmware and I don't think there are any files available for me to download. If anyone knows how to solve this problem, I sincerely appreciate your help. Thanks!

  • Cannot burn CDs or back up iTunes--error #4450

I can't burn CDs or back up iTunes. I keep getting error message 4450 (unspecified error). Does anyone know how to fix this? It sounds like a different problem than the one discussed in the earlier thread.

Same thing here. I was able to burn CDs on Saturday, but not today for some reason. Error 4450. However, I can play the same CD I just tried to burn through Windows Media Player. But iTunes won't recognize the disk when I try to reload it. Looks like Apple really screwed everyone who has a PC on this most recent update. Hmmmm...perhaps that's their way of 'encouraging' people to buy Mac. Maybe Steve Jobs should spend less time hanging out with Bono and more time developing software that actually works.

Finding this Post took some time but I thought it was me talking when I read it. I was having the exact same issue. I have a G3 I've been upgrading like mad, including a Sonnet G4-500 CPU a Maxtor 60gb & 80gb HDs 1gb of RAM a new LaCie Firewire800 PCI card Graphics card etc. the latest was installing Panther 10.3.9 on the new 80gb HD and also swapping out the old CD-ROM and replacing with the (Apple standard) Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-110D combo drive in it's place. got everything up and booted and poof! no burning. Toast worked read/write no problem. iTunes could read and import no problem, but wouldn't burn a CD.
Downloaded "PatchBurn 3.1.3" installed, re-booted and all is OK in burner land again :>)
I wanted to just post my additional thanks to the lead to Patchburner, and I'm going to donate to the cause. It's worth a $20 donation just for my joy of not throwing this computer out the window!!

  • Cannot Burn CDs

I have tried to burn discs many times using itunes, and usually when i try it intializes and starts writing the first track then it cancels right away and an error message come up and says "The attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occured (4261)" andi know its not my discs because i bought a brand new pack and tried them and ive tried multiple brands of dics and they all do this to me. Now the even weirder thing is that it doesnt always do this, sometimes, though it rare, it actaully copies the disc. please help me.

I have the same problem reported by shoeshank. I have a Dell desktop with Windows XP Pro; iTunes is ver. 7. I am able to burn text files to CDs using Roxio software without difficulty, so I presume my CD drive works okay. After iTunes' first failure to burn, the error message included the option to "calibrate the cd" which box I checked, but that did not seem to help, as I continue to get the error message "The attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occurred (4261)". Like shoeshank, iTunes on my computer seems to recognize the CD drive and the CD because the burn process does initiate. The error message appears after the sliding progress bar has gone about a fifth of the way. In iTunes, I ran Help>Run Diagnostics, which generated the following report:

  • Burning cds code error code 0x8002006D

I have been using my burner since i bought my powerbook and have been using the same cds. About a month ago i tried to burn a cd and got the error code 0x8002006D. I have been unable to burn from there on. I have reinstalled my computer and i continue to have this problem. Other forums suggest that it is a recent update? Any help or suggestions on how to fix this would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi, angelfire1220. Welcome to the Discussions.
There are three primary causes for Error Code 0x8002006D.
    1. Dirty lens in your optical drive. The error code means that the burner was unable to perform the power-calibration test for its laser with the media. The test is described in "About optical disc drive burning and write speeds." A dirty lens is the most common cause of this error. Buy a dry CD/DVD lens cleaner at a good electronics or computer store and use it to attempt to clean the lens.
    2. Incompatible media. Many new optical disc formats employ dyes for high-speed burning that may not work with older optical drives. The power calibration test fails, not because of a problem with the lens, but because of an issue with the dyes in the optical media. Try a different brand of media.
    3. Optical drive failing. Your CD/DVD burner is simply worn out or damaged and needs to be replaced. If your Mac is still under warranty, you may wish to contact AppleCare. If there is an Apple Retail Store in your area, I'd recommend taking it there. You may wish to call ahead to make an appointment at the Genius Bar.
Note that some of the information above is from the "Burning CDs and DVDs" chapter of my book, Troubleshooting Mac® OS X, Tiger Edition.

  • Cannot Burn CDs, Disc recording not found

Pretty straight forward issue here. I am not able to burn CDs.  I have tried the UpperFilter reg fixes that are out there with no luck.  When i do a complete reinstall and go into the diag tools i can see the drive is listed. If i apply the UpperFilter reg fix and try the diag tools again there is no drive listed. I am able to use the burner drive with other applications to burn ISOs without any problem but iTunes seems to be pretty useless when it comes to burning discs.  Also on start up I get the classic "iTunes was not properly installed. If you wish to import or burn CDs you need to reinstall iTunes." and when i reinstall obviously no luck.
    Any thoughts?

It looks like it's having trouble loading the CD/DVD drives.  Try doing a repair install as it notes there, and also check to see what other burning software you have installed on your system as some of it can conflict with iTunes.  You may need to uninstall the other CD Burning software.

  • Non-administrator users cannot burn files (no error)

    Hello,
clean install of Windows 7 SP1 x64, domain joined. Only local administrators are able to successfully burn a CD using Windows Explorer. When standard domain user tries to do it, the window with burning progress always suddenly disappears during burning without
any error or warning, and the "what do you want to do with blank CD" autoplay dialog is shown again. Needless to say the CDs are half-burnt and to be thrown away.
No error or warning in event viewer either, happens on all client computers. Burning using player compatible mode (not USB flash disk mode). Since local admins can finish the burning without any problems, I believe the discs, drive and drivers
are fine. No GPO controlling removable media (I guess that would result in an error or inability to start burning, anyway).
3rd party software seems to burn just fine even for standard users.
Any ideas what should we check to get the Windows Explorer burning working for standard users?
    Thanks,
    Jan

    Hi Jan,
I considered that there should be any file which is access denied during burning when you use standard user.
Please install Process monitor to capture the process during burning when using standard user, and find our the access denied file or registry key, then take ownership:
Solving Access Denied Errors Using Process Monitor
    http://improve.dk/solving-access-denied-errors-using-process-monitor/
Also, please check if the policy for CD rom is set:
    User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Explorer\Remove CD Burning Features
Local Computer Policy -> Computer Configuration -> Windows Settings -> Security Settings -> Local Policies -> Security Options -> Devices: Restrict CD-Rom access to locally logged-on user only

  • Cannot burn CDs on iMac G5

I see a lot of people have been having various problems with burning CDs and DVDs on the iMac G5. I have had a similar problem.
I could not burn any CDs, but I could burn DVDs. This affected iTunes, Standard folder burns and Toast. But I could burn DVDs! I tried different manufacturers CDs but this made no difference. In iTunes I got the error about "unable to calibrate laser", in other applications I got an error code.
I fixed this by modifying the CD/DVD System Preferences to Open Finder when a new CD or DVD is inserted. It was originally set to open Toast.

I'll try and be as concise as possible, but I want you to know that I've tried a few things and asked a bunch of people and still no definitive solution.
I copied an uncopywritten DVD-R on my iMac G5 using disc utility and the method described in an Apple article. I used a nextech 8x 4.6GB DVD-R. The copy DVD-R plays fine on the DVD player in my computer, but not on my JVC
HR-XVC2OU(R) home DVD player, which does play the original DVD-R. I took the copy DVD-R to a store, and it played on a Pioneer DVD player. I made a copy on a Maxell DVD-R, but had the same result. The recorder in my computer seems to be Pioneer DVD-RW DVD-K04F. Apple Chat folks said the disk utility would reproduce the DVD in the same format it was originally which, according to the JVC people, is compatible with their unit. If there's not an easy solution, I'll settle for a definitive one. If you've reached this point, thank you. I'm at the end of my rope.

  • Unable to burn CDs - unknown error 4280

I've updated to the latest verions of iTunes twice now. I can burn other CDs, but haven't been able to burn CDs for use in the car for two months. I'm really really tired of buying music I can't use. The CD will start to burn, then I get an unexplained error 4280. Or, the CD burns, but when I try to play it, I get an ERR in my CD player. Please help.

I also can not burn CDs with iTunes 5.0.1.4. I have a Dell Dimension 4400 with a NEC NR-7900A, Rev. 1.08 drive. Everytime I try to burn a CD it tries then comes back with the unknown error 4280. I tried adding the lasted firmware from Dell for this drive but it did not help.

Offtopic, but your prompt is freaking awesome!
Also, this probably won't make a difference, but maybe you should use /dev/cdrw
    HAHA !
I just did that a second ago and came in to update the thread. Adding /dev/cdrw does work...which is strange because I only have 1 CDRW/DVD combo drive.
and here's my PS1 if you are interested. I stole it off from the forums as well. from the thread which posts PS1. I don't remember who it was though. Credit to him/her
