Cannot capture PAL footage in FCP4.5 or FCP5.0.4

I have a last-minute project which was shot on PAL. Tried to capture but there was no video coming thru the FireWire. Tried both FCP5 on my 17" PB and FCP4.5 on my G4 and got no video.
Also opened up old FCP3 PAL project on the G4 which handled many PAL projects and went to the L & C window, but again it saw no video. Would this have anything to do with the OS? Or QuickTime (I have QT7 Pro on 17" PB and
QT6.5.2 Pro on G4)?
Anyone else experiencing similar problems? Please help.

Forgot to add that I tried trashing QT703 Receipts package (I'm on QT704) but it didn't seem to help.
I never had problems with PAL projects before. What could be wrong? Please help

  • Cannot capture dv footage from canon ax h1 on final cut pro

i shot a wedding over the summer on a canon ax h1, which belonged to the bride and i didn't have much experience with it. i shot the whole wedding, and now when i went to capture the footage the audio and video are not showing up.
there is timecode there, and i was definetely shooting to the tape when i recorded the wedding as the camera told me how much time was left on the tape and displayed the timecode. if anybody has any ideas on what this problem could be, please let me know, thanks alot.

  • FCE will not capture PAL footage

    Hi,
I'm trying to make a video for some English friends with footage they sent to me which is in PAL format. Normally I use HDV, so I changed the setting under "Easy Setup" to DV-PAL, but FCE will not let me capture it. The camera reads it and displays it on the screen, but it is not recognized by the computer. When I try to "capture now" an error message eventually appears saying "This operation could not be completed as there is no video."
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ben

Sorry...I am located in the U.S. My "Easy Setup" setting is normally HDV 1080i60 but I have changed it to DV-PAL. I don't know much about PAL or the different PAL settings (anamorphic, 32khz, etc). I'm not sure I understand your last question, but the camera does display "DVout i.Link" once connected to the computer.
I have tried trashing my preferences but no luck. Apologies for not knowing more about the situation but some of this stuff is a bit over my head. Thanks!

  • Cannot capture NTSC footage

    Hi Everyone,
I've been trying to capture an NTSC VHS tape into Final Cut Pro and it just isn't working.
I'm using a Miglia Directors Cut Take 2 to capture via an S-Video cable. The Directors Cut box is on 'Capture' and is set to NTSC and the VCR is NTSC compatible and outputs fine to a TV.
Are the FCP settings wrong or is it something else entirely?
    Thanks in advance!

    What settings are you using?
To capture from a digital converter you must set to Non controllable device your Capture Settings in the Device setup.
    Hope that helps !

  • Capturing DVD footage to use in FCP5

Are there any good free dvd ripper programs out there where I can pull video and audio off DVD's to edit them down in FCP 5 HD?

    No.

  • Capturing PAL: "This operation could not be completed...." Help!

    Hello,
I am attempting to capture PAL footage from a miniDV tape. I am using a Sony DSR-11 deck. From the Easy Setup menu, I select DV-PAL. In the Log & Capture window I select Capture Now and the the follow error message appears:
"This operation could not be completed as there is no video."
    Any tips?

Did you make sure the DSR-11 was in PAL mode? The switch on the back.

  • Unable to Capture PAL DV footage

I'm working on a project that requires I edit with both PAL and NTSC footage shot on mini-DV. I was about to purchase a plug-in to convert the PAL footage to NTSC, but find that I can't even capture the PAL footage to begin with.
I tried using both a deck and a camera as the source device to capture from and they both play the tape just fine and on the camera's LCD (not a PAL camera by the way), I can view the footage perfectly, but still FCP does not acknowledge any video on the tapes.
I've even tried capturing on iMovie-it tells me that the footage can't be captured because it is 'half-frames' and mentions LP and SP modes. Would this really matter and why does my camera play it just fine?
Also, when I play the tape on the camera and plug-in to a television, the picture keeps rolling, but again, plays perfectly on my non-pal camera.
I've tried switching all pre-sets to PAL, but it doesn't help.
I'm about to make a dub tape with a PAL camera (Sony Z1U) and see what happens, but if anyone has any other suggestions, I'd really appreciate any help.
    Thanks.

I have never seen an NTSC camera that plays PAL tapes!

  • HT200276 imported captured video footage to FCP 7 then brought up Boris FX text now I cannot find my footage

I captured my video footage and imported it into FCP 7 then I brought up Boris FX test in FCP and now I cannot find my footage. What am I missing?
    Thanks.

    Supa Dupa,
Someone suggested that I try DVCPRO HD instead and said that should be less taxing on my machine than Apple ProRes. I also came across a Youtube video where the guy said he uses XDCAM 1080p 24 35mbs VBR. Don't let the XDCAM throw you off because he was using a Canon 5D as well.
@Tom When I bring a clip to the timeline it does not need rendering. I listed all the info in my post. I am using a Macbook Pro 2.33 Dual Core and using a 4TB Caldigit External Hard drive using FW800. I have a Matrox card in the slot on the side that is connected (This allows me to be able to view my HD footage on an external monitor via my Matrox MXO2 Mini box). Portable speakers plugged into the headphone jack and a USB plug for my wireless mouse.
I do have a network but I didn't have it connected. No I didn't trash the pref's but I did do a reboot.
My computer was unusually sluggish while working in FCP. Every time I clicked on something it to a long time for it to do what I wanted! Just shutting FCP down took almost 5 minutes no lie!!! I am maxxed out on RAM so I am clueless.
As I am sitting here typing this out, my MBP is acting normal like it should but I am going to open FCP in a few to see how it behaves.

  • Capturing pal questions

Hi, I have a ntsc camcorder that also reads pal, so I use it to capture the pal footage with it.
It looks like it works fine, however, when I make a clip (exporting) it comes like pixelated (mostly with black&white video). The exporting setup is: DV-Pal, progressive 4:3, 75%.
    Does anybody have any ideas?
    Thanks!

The problems is that I cannot use Compressor. I have a powerbook G4 with leopard (this was to could use AE). But this way Compressor does not work...
That is the reason I am exporting as progressive instead of interlaced...
I was working this way just fine, until I started capturing the pal tapes with the nt camcorder, so I am guessing something happens that makes pixelated "some" not all, of the clips when I export them. (I repeat some of the clips are perfect but others are pixelated, using the same setup and the same nt camcorder)
    I hope to be understandable...

  • Unable to capture HDV footage with FCP 5.1

I've captured HD footage onto my old computer (10.4.11) without any problem but now I'm trying on my new one and it doesn't want to know.
First off there was a problem with the Firewire port ejecting my hard drives randomly so I took it to be repaired and they replaced the logic board and the port works fine.
I've looked at all the posts I could find, I've trashed my preferences, reinstalled Final Cut Studio ( after uninstalling then updating the software). I've made sure the camera is set to HDV playback rather than auto and that the iLink HDV/DV conversion is off. I've tried all the easy setups and all the custom ones I could think of but still FCP (5.1.4) won't allow me to capture. On some settings I have had device control but no image, on others it said the camera isn't connected. The only way I've captured footage is by using the HDV Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50 which works fine.
The camera is a Sony HDR-HC7 connected directly to the iMac with a Firewire 800 / iLink cable or daisy chained through my external hard drive with a 400 / iLink cable (neither of which makes any difference) I can also capture SD footage from both the HDV and a Panasonic SD camera when in DV-PAL setup. The HDV camera also shows up as connected in the system profiler.
This is driving me nuts so any help would be appreciated and if there's any other info I can help with to make this clearer let me know.

I just got off the phone with a friend of mine who was having the same problem as you. Although you say the camera playback is set properly, please recheck this. go into your camera's playback menu>menu>standard set>VCR HDV/DV. Unplug your firewire from the camera. Make sure camera is set to HDV NOT auto. replace firewire cable. Now open FCP. Go in Audio/video settings>A/V devices (farthest tab on right). In box for playback edit to tape different from video output (make sure it's checked) mirrored (checked) Video playback 1080i50, Audio HDV. I hope that works now.

  • Problem capturing PAL video into FCE HD

I'm having a problem capturing video from a PAL MiniDV tape. The tape was recorded on a PAL camera during a shoot in India; when I got home with the tapes the cameraman gave me, I was unable to view them on (or capture them from) my (NTSC) Canon GL-1 to my PowerBook G4 running FCE HD3.5.1 (external hard drive).
I borrowed a friend's Sony Handycam and CAN view the tape without a problem on that, AND get a "VTR OK" message in the FCE "Capture" window (though I get color bars and a "Preview Disabled" screen). I can also control the tape playback from the FCE Capture interface.
However, when I click "Capture Now", after clicking the "Play" button, I get a dialogue box that says "This operation could not be completed as there is no video."
I have tried a number of different "Easy Setup" device control options, but to no avail.
    Can anyone help? Thanks!

I'm going to correct myself ... although I was able to capture the contents of ONE tape, after that the problem returned and I cannot capture anything else (even that same tape). So it seems the "solution" was not "FireWire-all-the-way" but remains out of my reach for the moment ...

  • CS4 I cannot capture in HDV only DV works

I am really new in this field so excuse my incompetence, but I really need help. I have recorded footage in HDV 1080I but i cannot capture it. I can run my device (my camera) from the capture window (play, <<, pause, etc.) but not capture. Only when I change settings into dv format, I can capture the material in DV. I use an ilink,  windows Vista and premiere pro CS4. Anyone can help me analyze the problem. The camera is a new Sony z1

You are not using a trial version of Premiere are you?  If you are, the trial does not have any HDV or HD features, as Adobe buy these from a third party.

  • Capturing live footage and FCE is trying to locate timecode breaks

    Hey,
I am using my FCE to capture live footage from each event that I have. I recently started to have a problem with FCE trying to locate time code breaks in the capture, which pauses the capture each time which is footage that I can't get back.
Is there some way to turn that off? I have been forced to use iMovie recently because of this problem but I really need to figure out why this problem would all of the sudden start to appear. Like I said it has worked fine for over a year and now all of the sudden it no longer works.
Please let me know your suggestions.
    Thanks

There are only two DV Converter presets in the list. I don't where thelaw3 is so I don't know how your converter box is set up so I can't tell which you should select. It's either PAL or NTSC. You need to read the manual for your converter box and look through the FCE manual.

  • Still cannot capture HDV

I still cannot capture any HD format .. I have reformatted with a clean install on my macbookpro' .. reinstalled FC5.proStudio .. I tried not updating Quicktime .. still no HD capture .. then updated everything, quicktime 7.4.1 .. still no HD. capture .. doesn't recognize the camera .. works perfect in DV NTSC mode ... I can't afford to lose anymore hair. Any idea's?

That sounds scary' .. I think it is still under extended warranty .. thank god my dual G5 was still under warranty .. the cooling system sprung a leak and effectively wiped it out. That sounds possible, something with the camera itself .. before the latest upgrades to Leopard, it began not displaying the video in the capture window .. even though it was still capturing.
I see you are down under, I am working on a project right now for a renowned architect in New Zealand .. They found an old 1/2 hour dvd from the local television, a special on him in the mid 70's .. so my problem now has been to get the footage into FC.pro for re/editing. All the software I tried for extracting the dvd material suffered significant degradation .. so I filmed it off my cinema display in HD. Luckily I am still able to capture with basic NTSC. The quality is actually quite good.
I am not sure at this point which compressor to use to get the highest quality .. for now I just used: DV NTSC 48 khz.
