Cannot capture with JVC SR-DVM600 in FCP

I have seen posts where people have seemingly had issues in the past with connecting FCP to this deck, but no one explains how they did it. The JVC FAQs are worse than useless.
Are there any specifics someone can give me on how they connected this deck to their Mac and captured thru FCP?
(We just blew a wad o cash on a bunch of these because a vendor said they would work w/o problems.)

Hey there Joel,
If they guaranteed the machines would work, have them come over and show you how to do it. If they don't want to or can't come - simply send the machines back for a refund as they are non-performing.
Never trust a vendor (even if they are offering support) without some independent testing/verification. The bigger the expenditure, the bigger the need for testing. Or, if you want to be a cowboy, make sure they have a really good return policy.

  • Cannot capture with Premiere CS6 with canon XA20

Just recently purchased canon XA20 and tried to capture form this device, but states device is offline.  I recorded media AVCHD, , recording mode 18MPS LPCM (59.94P).  In premier put device type canon.  of course the XA20 is not  listed for Device type not sure what to put.  I just used standard and it does not recognize camera.     Anny help in setting I would appreciate it.

    Hi Dakota,
You cannot capture AVCHD files. You copy the card to the media drive and then ingest them via the Media Browser in Premiere Pro. Hope that helps.
    Thanks,

  • SONY HC1 CANNOT CAPTURE WITH FCP 6.0

    HELP PLEASE!!
This problem is driving me mental.
I have a Sony HDR HC1. I've been shooting in DV PAL 4:3 before and had no problems at all.
It's well past time when i should be shooting in HDV 16:9. I have changed the settings on the video camera to HDV, 16:9, including in playback mode.
No matter what settings i put in FCP i cannot get it to capture??? I just always get the message that says "Device is not connected or capture preset is not set up correctly. You may still log offline clips. This might also happen if you play DV footage in an HDV device."
Please can someone in the know come up with some suggestions? I'd be so grateful.
    TIA! Regards.

I think you have to change a setting in your camera (I have an HC7 which is just a later version of yours). It's still playing back in DV so final cut isn't recognizing it as HDV. set your camera in playback mode>hit p menu>menu> scroll through to VCR HDV/DV. Unplug your fire wire cable. On your screen you'll have 3 choices: Auto, HDV, DV. Push HDV. (auto doesn't seem to work) Get out of the menus. Camera will now play back in HDV mode. Hook up your firewire cable again. Make sure your Easy set up in FCP matches the camera (I'm not sure what pal setting are). Hopefully, you'll be good to go.

  • Question about capturing with JVC GY-HD200U

I am looking at this particular camcorder, JVC GY-HD200U, and was wondering if there is any issues capturing footage into FCP6. Does any one own or worked with the JVC GY-HD200U or early model?
share you thoughts about this camcorder if you have worked with it.
    much thanks

Excuse my naivety here, but how does one go about importing HDV 720 as 'pro res'?
Can this be done by changing the import / capture settings, or does it require transferring the material to HD?
I'm using footage from my JVC HD GY100 in 24p. I've spent over a week trying to import the material into FCP through a JVC BR-HD50 deck with absolutely no luck, and it's getting really frustrating!!
I'm dealing with over 80 tapes of footage, so I don't have the option of going through each tape and logging individual clips. I've been trying to import entire tapes at a time.
I keep getting a 'stream error' prompt when attempting to capture.
I've tried with both start / stop detect on and off, I've tried to 'capture now', which seems to work until the very end of the tape / capture, at which time another error is reported. I've also attempted to set in and out points a minute or two from the beginning and end of the tapes, then batch capture the logged tape. Again, no dice.
Unfortunately I haven't had luck with anything, and I'm getting very frustrated.
I'm not a professional editor, so perhaps I'm missing something very basic? I have no clue why this format is so difficult to import!! I've never spent over a week trying to figure out how to import footage!
I don't care whether each tape I import is an entire tape or cut up into clips at time breaks, but I can't seem to get anything!!!
I really appreciate anyone's suggestions here. I'm at my wits end.
And again, I don't usually do this type of work, so if you could describe in detail any suggestions / solutions I would be very grateful. Many thanks.

  • Problem capturing with JVC GY HD100

Quite a few posts out there about similar problems but I haven't seen any post with this exact problem.
When I capture video using my JVC GY HD100 camera, in FCP 6.0.4, it automatically cuts the intake into smaller files(i didn't film different clips, i filmed a stand-up comedian and shot everything on one go). But it cuts the whole film lots of times and furthermore about 6 seconds of film disappears after between these clips.
When I capture it in Adobe premiere (still on my Mac Pro ) there is no problem whatsoever. But I prefer using FCP!
It's such a hassle and I hope somebody has a good solution.
    +Thank you!+

I haven't had this problem with mine yet (actually no problems at all). But I do know that FC splits into different clips footage any time the JVC "pauses", rather than just when there is a time-code break on the tape. And when digitizing from the camera, it does loose about 6 seconds for the tape mechanism in the camera to shuttle around, and ramp up speed. But if you didn't pause the camera I'm not sure.
Check out this site too. They have A LOT of JVC specific trouble shooting with FC.

  • Ipod classic "cannot play" with jvc kd-hdr50 car stereo?

When I plug my ipod classic 160gb into the usb input on my JVC KD-HDR 50 car stereo I'm getting "cannot play" on the display. This is the first time that I've had this happen.  I did reset the ipod and tried a different usb cable but still have the same problem. Can anyone help me with this problem?

I solved the problem using the reset button on my JVC car stereo. Works fine now.

  • VirtualDVHS help or capturing with JVC HM-DH30000

A friend asked me to copy an old VHS tape for her to DVD, which I didn't think I could do until I realized I have my old JVC DVHS deck in cold storage. Low and Behold it has a firewire out on it.
I've read a lot on forums that suggest that I could use something called virtualdvhs or another dvhs utility to capture, or to allow a new capture preset in final cut pro hd. However, I can't find the application anywhere on the internet.
Can anyone suggest where to find the application, or another method to get my FCPHD to see my DVHS deck for log & capture?
    Much appreciated.

I believe what you are looking for is called DVHSCap.
It is referenced in several articles, one on LAFCPUG and another on Ken Stone, but these articles are old, and a Google search leads me to believe DVHSCap is not readily available any more.
Why not take the analog outs into an Canopus ADVC 110 or similar:
    http://www.canopus.com/products/ADVC110/index.php
Or how about analog straight to your camera?
I believe you want to avoid the analog decode/code but we are talking about old VHS. It is not going to be pretty. What's a single analog pass between friends?
    Best,
    Tom

  • Anyone ever use a Canon XH A1 with FCP 5.1.4? I cannot capture at present.

I tried to start a new project with different setting for SD, and all the settings I originally had for my HD project changed, now I cannot capture anymore. It took me a while to configure all the settings for HD with the 2:3:3:3 pulldown, but now I'm just plain confused. Anyone know a solution?

I shot in HD in the 24F mode on a Canon XH A1. I've been capturing fine, but now the camera is not recognized ever since I created a new project with different settings.I created those project settings thinking they would only apply to that project (an SD one), and now I cannot figure out the steps to get back to where I was. This is what I wrote down to for my "In System Settings" that worked:
    Video Quality: Dynamic
    Frame Rate: Full
    Pulldown Pattern: 2:3:3:2
    Frame Offset: 4
    Record (Full Quality).
    Easy Setup - HDV-1080i60
Then I set my compressor for HDV 1080p24.
Now this simply doesn't work and I cannot capture.
Is there a way to revert back to my old settings before I created a different project?
Very confused why I cannot recognize my camera.

  • Log & Capture problem with JVC GY100 HD, please help!

    Hi guys,
I'm trying to Log & Capture using JVC GY100HD on FCP HD which was shot on 1080i HD. FCP HD won't recognize the camera. It's all hooked up correctly.
Can someone please help me with the Settings & Preferences to get this to recognize?
    Thanks in advance,
    ZIA

The camera cannot shoot 1080i material; it only shoots 720p. It can however play back 1080i material. The footnote is a little misleading. What they're trying to say is that FCP does not support the JVC's 720p25 or 720p24 formats.
What shot the 1080i material? A Sony? Try using the standard Sony HDV 1080i preset, but don't use the Sony HDV device control preset. Make sure the camera is set in the correct output mode before launching the application.

  • Cannot capture, but can do pretty much everything else with deck. What now?

    Hello everybody,
I'm writing for the Gateway Media Center. We're basically a small group of students which handles anything video or TV related for a public school district, mainly the high school. Our main editing system (Mac connected to a MiniDV deck via FireWire)is the subject of this post.
And we've got a bit of a problem. I've seen it at least once before on these forums, but no solution in that topic helped.
Basically, we can't capture video or audio with Final Cut Pro, but we can control the deck, watch audio levels coming from the deck within Final Cut, and even record edited material to tape with the deck just fine. We CAN capture with another application.
I'd like to say that NO, we have not updated anything within the past six months or so, at least not to my knowledge. (The problem started last week).
*_A detailed decription of what DOESN'T work:_*
Log & Capture window: The preview monitor within the window always shows the default color bars and the black horizontal band that roughly says 'Preview Disabled'.
    *With device 'FireWire NTSC' selected:*
*Aud+Vid, Capture Now:* The black window with the whire Final Cut window opens. The bottom says 'Waiting for Timecode'. After this sits there for a few seconds, a message pops up and says roughly 'The operation could not be completed because there is no video'. The deck is automatically paused.
*Video Only, Cap. Now:* same as above^.
*Audio Only, Cap. Now:* Black window, bottom says 'capturing now', as it should, but when the Esc key is hit a message that says roughly 'ERROR: Final Cut could not read the movie file just captured' pops up.
*With 'Non-Controlable device' selected:* same as above, except that 'Waiting for Timecode' is replaced with 'Allocating Disk Space'.
*A detailed description of what DOES work:*
    - Video and Audio go TO the deck, whether it's from Timeline/Canvas, Viewer, or Print to Video. I succesfully recorded an edit to tape just yesterday.
    - The deck can be controlled with the JKL keys, the buttons on the Log & Cap. window, go to In point and even Batch Capture cues the tape correctly.
    - Timecode is visible in the top right of the preview monitor in the L&C window, and it is the right timecode.
    - Audio levels visible (in that stand-alone window which is usually to the right of the timeline) match what I'm hearing from the deck's analog monitor.
    - Vidi, a simple little program, can record video which is manually cued with the deck. The saved video file(s) can then be successfully imported into FCP.
    _*Trouble-shooting ALREADY attempted:*_
    1) Correct turn on order: Shut everything down, unplug the deck's power, turn on and log into Mac, plug in deck and wait for it to wake up, turn the deck on, then launch Final Cut.
    2) Check deck's input and output settings.
    3) Unplug other FireWire devices. (We use an external hard drive connected on the same firewire bus. Not that it's ever been a problem)
    4) Change Captrue Scratch location and make sure there's enough disk space.
    5) Delete Final Cut Pro Preferences and that 'com.apple.finalcutpro.plist' thing.
    _*Trouble-shooting NOT attempted:*_
    1) Replace FireWire cable. I think it's safe to say the cable's fine since the computer can capture with Vidi, but I guess I should try this too, next time I get a chance.
    2) Remove receipts and Re-install Final Cut Pro. (Really, a last resort.)
    _*The specs:*_
Yes, this stuff is pretty old. Like I said, we're talking about a pulic school district, and the system usually suits us just fine.
FCP: Final Cut Pro HD (Academic) 4.5
+set up with the 'DV NTSC 48kHz' Easy Setup. Video playback on 'FireWire NTSC 720x480'. Yes, External Video All Frames.+
*The Mac:* PowerMac G4 (of what I believe would be called the MDD case model family)
OS: Mac OS X, version 10.3.9
CPUs: Dual 1.25GHz PowerPC G4, 2 MB L3 cache per processor
    RAM: 1 GB DDR SDRAM
HDDs: Two drives, reportedly on the 'ATA-6' bus.
*The Deck:* JVC SR-DVM700 (3-in-1 MiniDV (with the 'PROFESSIONAL DV' logo), hard drive, and DVD-RW/RAM), 4-pin FireWire port connected to 6-pin port on Mac.
+Deck's Monitor:+ one professional CRT video monitor with built-in mono speaker, analog inputs directly connected to deck, made by JVC.
Sorry about the long post, I wanted to make it clear.
We're getting into a nice crunch as the school year is ending, and we really need to get this running. Any tips would be great!
    Thanks,
    Jake T.
+Gateway Media Communication Center / Gateway High School Video Club / Gateway Video Productions+

That makes sense, but our problem started last week - Final Cut captured fine before then.
And I don't think it's been updated lately, as 7.4.5 is the latest version of QuickTime for OS10.3.9. If an update caused the problem, wouldn't the update be to 7.4.5, and not 7.3.1?
    Nevertheless, I'll try it.
    Thanks,
    Jake T.

  • Capture with FCP - Edit on Avid

I have been asked by a friend if I can digitise (via FCP) 6 hours of DVCam for them to edit in Avid - they have asked for me to supply it as OMFI files. Now the only reference I can find in the 'Export' option is for Audio export as OMF. Surely OMFI is a file exchange format and not a video file. Can anyone fill in the blank spaces for me please?

You cannot capture footage as OMFI with FCP. FCP captures as Quicktime. You cannot convert the footage to OMFI...only Avid can do that. Well, now Automatic Duck does that too, as mentioned:
    http://automaticduck.com/products/pefcp/
"New in this release you can export Avid MXF media that connects to your exported AAF file, write media that is external to the OMF or AAF file avoiding file size limits as well as translate many effects from Final Cut Pro to your Avid or Quantel Generation Q system."
    Is this true Wes?

  • Capturing with a JVC HD GY 110U, missing beginnings

    Hi There,
We are working with a JVC HD GY 110U and capturing is proving to be trying, FCP and the JVC are cutting off the starts of our clips., we checked this out on the JVC site and it said the problem is resolved by upgrading the firmware of the camera which we have done but still the problem continues.
has anybody run into this problem before....
    thanks in advance

    THANKS for your quick response...
well I've started reading the "HD and Broadcast Formats" section and I hope it helps me get to the bottom of things... you said...
"A GOP is typically half a second in length, so your solution is to back up your capture in point by at least that amount"
so would a good work around be to add a longer pre roll value to the capture in the |"easy set up" menu?
or would you recommend un checking... "Create new clip on Start/Stop" in the clip setting menu in the Log and capture window and just making a single file from a cassette and create sub clips before editing?
edit... well scratch that idea I unchecked this option but FCP is still capturing individual clips...
How would I "back up my/your capture in point"?
    thanks again for the support

  • Will FCP capture with this?

will a Sony GV-D300 Video walkman capture with FCP on leopard?
    http://www.freetradephoto.com/SonyGV-D300Videowalkman.htm

I've had similar problems with short duration (less than 10 mins) DVDs from HDV from a JVC camera and H264 from Canon HD DSLR edited in Apple ProRes SQ.
After much mucking about with settings, and I'm not absolutely sure why this works I found the best results were obtained by first of Exporting a Quicktime from FCP with same settings.
Bring this version into Compressor, use the "DVD Best Quality 90 mins" setting but change the settings to "One Pass VBR Best". You can raise the "Average bit rate" slightly but don't play with the maximum bit rate, this can cause problems with some DVD players, and not necessarily the one you are using for testing.
Get yourself some re-writeable DVD-RWs for testing.
For me the results of using these settings on short duration DVD productions are enormous, the 2 Pass created results comparable to VHS quality. It was more like cooking and trying different herbs and spices to flavour the meal. Don't get me started on compression and delivery for the web...

  • I can capture with iMovie 6, but not with FCP 6.0 ('no data from device')

I didn't have any problem with FCP 5, but am getting nowhere with FCP 6 using the same settings (I think). FCP seems to see the camcorder, but can't control it and, even if I manually start the camera, reports 'no data from device' when I do a 'Capture Now'. Device control isn't critical, but I'd sure like to find out why it doesn't see the data stream from the camera (Sony HDR-HC7 / FW400). I must be missing a setting some place, but sure can't find it. On the other hand, I have full device control and zero dropout capture with iMovie (exact same hardware configuration). Any ideas?

i have tons of tapes and tried a few, none worked.
i tried to capture on both my new imac and my mbpro, no way.
but now i'm sure there is something wrong with the sony handycam, i tried to import with my old final cut studio, and it's not possible, also. fc pro says: waiting for timecode.
so i'm confused now. does the sony dcr-trv not send a timecode? maybe, and this will explain the troubles. but on the other hand i imported successfully some footage with exact this device.
maybe i used the canopus then to correct the timebase, i can't remember how i did it. but this would mean i have to accept loss of quality, since i have to connect the sony with s-vhs with the canopus and convert it.
right now i'm importing a tape with imovie and will have a look how the result is, but as far as i remember, the audio has to be re-rendered when importing in fcpx…
My finger is pointing to a Timecode issue.
Is timecode enabled in the camera?
Is it continuous on the tape?

  • Capture with FCP - Use in Avid?

I absolutely could not get my Avid software to capture the 30F footage I shot with my Canon XH-A1. FCP can capture it, however. I am hoping that I can import (or export) the FCP-captured media for use by Avid Media Composer 2.8.
Is this possible? Do I have to transcode or something?
    Any help/tips appreciated!

Yeah, I believe importing like that into an Avid doesn't carry over time code nor reel information. This is why it is very important to capture footage with the system you intend to edit it on.
