Cannot change filename extensions any longer

Hi,
this morning I encountered a strange problem:
In Finder, I cannot change the file name extensions any longer. When I hit enter and change e.g. Example.txt to Example.taskpapertheme, it will automatically be renamed to Example.taskpapertheme.txt as soon as I hit enter. I _can_ rename it via the Get Info-pane, on the other hand. I tried it in the Applications folder too, and it will always add the "correct" extension to the one I chose instead of just asking me whether I really want to do this.
Then again, I just renamed an .taskpapertheme file to .txt, and it worked. I could even reverse this, so the problem seems to be limited to some files.
I have no idea what to do, so I'd really appreciate your help!
Kind regards,
krml

Thank you, but unfortunately that didn't help.
I know about extensions and file types, but normally OS X will let me change it if I really want to do it, even if it's stupid like renaming .app to .txt.
The problem is, that OS X doesn't ask me any longer, but automatically adds the previous externsion to the filename after the extension I need to make some program recognize it. In my example, the theme files for TaskPaper are plain text files, but only load if they are named .taskpapertheme - unfortunately I cannot rename it in Finder as it will always add .txt when I finish editing the filename.

  • [SOLVED] Cannot change GSettings in any way!

Hi, I have a huge problem. I cannot change any GSetting value as normal user. I tried dconf-editor, just can't change anything. I tried gsettings from terminal, it doesn't show any errors, but values are not changed whatever I do. As root this all works normally.
As a workaround I have tried copying .config/dconf/user from root to user account, doesn't work.
What can I do to fix this?

  • Mac Mini cannot access secure WiFi any longer.

Two days ago, my 8 month old Mac Mini dropped my wifi and would not reconnect.  I have a Motorola router with AT&T U-verse.  I reset router, computer but still kept receiving "timeout" error.  I tried creating a new location, clearing out keychain but that didn't help.
Eventually I wrecked my network configuration files in Library->Preferences and reset the machine while also resetting SMC (unplug power and hold power button for 15 seconds).  When machine booted back up, I was able to connect again until the first time my computer fell asleep.  The connection could not be reestablished.
I started toying with the router setting - when I remove all security, I could access the network.  Also, when I set the security to WEP instead of WPA, I could access the network but I was not asked for the key - the network showed up as unprotected which is troubling.
Does anyone know why I can no longer utilize WPA protected WiFi any longer?  I am currently on OS 10.7.4.
Does Mountain Lion address any of Lion's WiFi wonkiness?

Very odd.. kind of thing that Mavericks does though.
What is the router and dns values in the mini cf the MBPs..
The TC should be in bridge so all connections are getting IP from the Comcast router. They should therefore all get the same values.. for router (gateway) and dns.
Check this also by doing a ping to the internet.
Ping your ISP home address. if it does not respond by name test it by IP address. you can pick this up from another computer that does work.
If you have dns issues then simply change the dns to manual setting and use 8.8.8.8 which is the google universal one.
Mavericks is very ipv6 .. I am not sure how relevant but make sure ipv6 is set to link local for both wireless and ethernet connections.

Go to icloud.com >> mail >> gear in the upper right >> preferences >> accounts.  You can change it there.  In my testing, I had to close and reopen my mail.app for it to take affect.

  • Cannot "LOCK" System Preferences any longer???

OK, this just started, I can no long lock any of the system perf's. When I press the lock the window flashes (say's 'De-authenticating' ) very fast and returns to the unlocked state. Logging in as 'Root' or 'Admin' makes no difference. Everything seems to work fine I just cannot lock anything.... any suggestions???

..."Logging in as 'Root' or 'Admin' makes no difference."...
If you happened to have run "repair permissions" on your 10.5 drive while booted into 10.4 (or while using eg. "DiskWarrior"), that would have resulted in changes to permissions that are incompatible with 10.5. One of the consequences is that some user processes may end up running as "root", which might account for there being no difference between logging in as "root" and "admin". The "root" account is meant to be authorized to make most changes through "System Preferences" without being required to authenticate, so it may not be possible to close the "Lock" when "System Preferences" is running as "root".
If the above describes your situation, unfortunately, the tools currently provided with 10.5 will not fix this problem automatically -- specifically, "repair permissions" in 10.5 doesn't repair the permissions that are causing the problem. If you are an experienced user, you can fix the permissions manually (using the output from a "verify permissions" run conducted while booted in 10.5 as a guide to determine what changes are required).
For most users, an "archive and install" may be the easiest solution. It should be acceptable to preserve user and network settings.
This issue could potentially pose a serious security issue. I think Apple needs to fix this quickly, and at the very least, post a support article describing the specific symptoms and warning of the dangers.

  • I cannot run my ITunes any longer.  Error message says lITunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of ITunes

Has anyone had any luck getting ITunes to work properly on a Windows 7 PC lately?  Up until today, I could not open my ITunes at all because it said the disk was locked.  A very helpful person at Apple Care told me to go into properties and release the read only box.  I did and it did not help.  So I uninstalled ITunes and downloaded the newest version.  Now I get the message:  ITunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of ITunes.
Can anyone help me out with this?  Thanks.

  • I cannot open my mail any longer. I cannot get my mail at all.

I have 2 accounts set up on Thunderbird. The second account, the one I use for work, [email protected] is no longer working. I can still get my mail through the outlook web app but I always only use thunderbird and have all of my folders and everything there. The other day, my password expired and I updated all that through the outlook web app. However, I have not been able to get my mail back on Thunderbird. Next to the account name on the left hand side there is a lock on the side and there is no longer a drop down arrow at all. I cannot even double click on it or anything. Nothing happens and I can no longer get emails.
When I open Thunderbird I get an error "The current operation on Inbox did not succeed. The mail server [email protected] responded. User is authenticated but not connected"
    Please help.

  • Since upgrading my 3GS iPhone to iOS5 I cannot access my Gmail any longer

    Hello all
I upgraded my 3GS to iOS5 last week and was having problems with battery life. One suggestion I saw on these forums was to delete and re-add my email account to fix the problem. Big mistake.
I deleted my Gmail account, which I access through Exchange in order to get push email. I re-added, which should have been a simple process. I know everything I put in was exactly the same as the deleted account, but now I keep getting a pop-up telling me that my username or password is incorrect. Sometimes I get another telling me that the Gmail server is inaccessible, too. I have tried deleting the account several times and re-adding it, but I keep getting the same problem.
I have tried the unlock captcha fix that I've seen as a solution on various forums, but to no avail.
In the meantime, I have set up my Gmail through the Gmail (rather than Exchange) option and I have no problem getting that to work. But I understand that doesn't offer the push email function - correct me if I'm wrong? Certainly it's not as quick to tell me I have an email, so I'd really love to fix this and get back to what I had set up before.
    Thanks.

    Hi Shady
Thanks for your help. My gmail account uses just the stock standard sign-in process - just needs a password.
But in checking to make sure that was correct, I saw the option on Gmail to set up a two-stage verification process, and then generate an app-specific password for my iPhone. I thought that might be a way around it, so I set up the two-step verification process and then generated an app-specific password for the iPhone and tried to re-add my gmail account with Exchange...
Same problem. Works fine when I set it up through the Gmail option, but through the Exchange option I get the dreaded password pop-up.
At least my Gmail account is now more secure!

  • I cannot change the Apple ID on my iPhone for the App Store so I am unable to update any of my apps. It is an old Apple id I had a good few years ago I have no idea why it is still coming up. I have researched this and solutions coming up are not wor

Working. I have tried going on settings and to the apps store section and That has my new Apple id. I cannot sign into the old account as I no longer have access to the email address and for some reason the security questions I don't seem to be getting right so I cannot deauthorise it on iTunes. It's annoying as I cannot update or add any apps at all, when I try the old ID comes up with no option to change it. Any help will be great but I'm not that good with these phones so it will need to be an idiots guide!  Ty

You need to ask Apple for assistance with getting back into your old ID. To do this, click here and pick a method; if that page doesn't list one for your country or you're unable to resolve this issue through the Account Security team, fill out and submit this form.

  • No tooltips for long filenames in list view any longer?

    hello all,
i'm trying to figure out why no tooltips are showing for long file / folder names in finder any longer? they appear in icon view, but i've always used list view and tooltips would normally appear when the cursor is moved over a long filename.
this is on 10.8.1, i'm pretty sure they worked on 10.8
any suggestions are much appreciated, thank you.

thank you for the link though the article seems to not exist.  anyway, i tried changing the delay time for the tooltips in finder, but it had no effect on displaying tooltips when hovering over file/folder names.
it should be noted that tooltips still appear when hovering over finder icons, like view options, etc.
is there a preferences file that may need looking at?

  • IPod Sync error -48, cannot update any longer

An intractable and frustrating problem has surfaced on my iPod and I’d appreciate any advice.
System: Powermac G5 Dual 2.0, iPod 80GB. All newest software, firmware, etc. installed.
Problem: A few weeks ago, after adding songs ripped from a CD, the iPod failed on the next sync. A dialog box appeared “Attempting to copy to the disk ‘Dons iPod’ failed. An unknown error occurred (-48).” I clicked OK and sometimes the same box would appear again. Then another dialog box, “The iPod ‘Dons iPod’ cannot be updated. An unknown error occurred (-48).” Clicked OK on that one, and the sync finishes and the iPod shows ‘update complete’ although none of the changed/added songs are added.
I did a full restore and reload and all was well…until my next sync after songs/podcasts were added. Then the error -48 dialog boxes came back and new info was not added. A full restore and reupdate went fine, but basically I cannot resync after a full update any longer.
Attempts to fix: Tried different cables and USB ports. Rebuilt the library per Apple’s technote. Emptied whatever iTunes caches I could find. Tried syncing only songs, not podcasts/photos/contacts. Enabled and disabled disk mode. My older 4GB nano still syncs perfectly, even adding new songs the bigger iPod rejects with the -48 error. My old 60GB photo always worked fine.
Any advice greatly appreciated! Thanks, Don

At the moment there seems to be no permanent fix for this. This is the workaround I'm currently using until a fix comes along.
Set up iTunes "not" to open when you connect the iPod.
Enable Disk Use on the iPod
Eject the iPod and shut down iTunes
Reconnect the iPod and open Disk Utility
Click on your iPod in the Utility pane and choose Repair Disk which will find and fix a number of errors.
Close Disk Utility and open iTunes and your iPod should connect and update as usual.
Keep the settings above and each time you connect the iPod run Disk Utility repair as above before opening iTunes. It's far from being a acceptable answer but until a permanent one comes along I've found that it works for me. I've tried the Apple advice of erasing the iPod in Disk Utility and restoring it in iTunes but found it only worked for a while before the error came back.
