Cannot change Media Kind when importing audiobooks and TV shows into iTunes for Mac

I just purchased a new MacBook Pro - my first Apple computer.
I have used PC's with iTunes for many years, and have a large collection of music (from CD's), audiobooks (from CD's), TV shows (from multiple sources), and movies (from DVD's) on external an hard drives.  I have never had trouble moving these to/from my various iDevices: an iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPad 2.
I plugged the external drive into my new MacBook Pro, and added the folders to my iTunes for Mac library.  As always happened in the past, the video files were always characterized as "Movies", and audio files as "Music".  However, in iTunes for Mac, i do not seem to have the ability to change the Media Kind .... I can see the field, but it is "greyed out" and i am not allowed to change it.
Can anyone help advise me on how I can change these Media Kinds?  Thank you!

No one answered my question, but I solved it, and thought I'd explain how if others have the same problem .... I had the wrong kind of hard drive for a Mac.  It was formatted NTFS, which the Mac could read but not write to .... therefore, iTunes wouldn't let me change anything.  I needed a better external hard drive anyways, so I got a new one, formatted it to the Mac format, and then just dragged everything to the new hard drive.  After that, iTunes worked perfect.

  • Cannot change media kind in itunes 12 - audiobook

    Hi
Before the update i could add an audiobook to itunes from my laptop, windows 8.1. The audiobook got into musicfiles, then i marked all the files/songs, went to info and changed from music to audiobook. Viola and i could find my audiobook in that categori.
That is no longer possible! I can still go to info, but the only option in media kind is "music"
I have tried with severel audiobooks, but same result. I also tried when i wasn't logged on to Itunes, and then i could change media kind, but when i logged on, nothing changed.
Sorry for the spelling and grammatics errors. From Denmark.

  • Cannot change media kind in iTunes 11

Just upgraded to iTunes 11, and it seems the ability to change the media kind is broken. Specifically, I want to change some Music files into Podcast files. Normally, I would do this by going Get Info > Options > Media Kind = Podcast.
Anybody else having the same problem?

Sorry – I didn't mean to suggest that my solution was a good solution, just that it might be a temporary fix for some of you until Apple fixes the bug (if indeed they consider it a bug).
skirsman: I'm not sure why you say ID3 Editor needs to be compiled. Go to http://www.pa-software.com/downloads.php and look for the download options under ID3 Editor. However, you're right about it being trial software. For me this wasn't a problem, because I'm not looking for a long-term solution, and I was able to change the metadata for 140 MP3s. If you're interested in this approach, it'd be worth searching for other apps that do this – ID3 Editor was simply the first thing I found, and its trial period was sufficient for my needs. I believe it's also possible to write AppleScripts or Python code (or whatever) to do this automatically, and I might attempt something like that if this problem sticks around.
7smcb: Sorry I didn't give more detailed instructions. Here are instructions for the Mac version (Windows version is probably similar):
    Run ID3 Editor.
It will ask you to open a file. Choose the MP3 you want to modify.
Go to the Podcast tab (see screenshot).
Enable the "podcast tag" by checking the box (see screenshot).
Give an identifier, feed location (optional), and description (optional). See info further below.
    Click Update.
    Import the file into iTunes.
As far as I can tell, you don't need to give both an identifier and a feed (just one is sufficient), but I gave both. I also added a description as well, but this seems to be optional. If you leave all the fields blank iTunes will not accept the file as a podcast.
If you want to do this with a whole bunch of files at once, go to File > Open Group in ID3 Editor, which allows you to modify the metadata for many files at once.
As far as I know, the identifier should be set to something unique for each file, so that iTunes can treat it as a separate episode or whatever. I didn't experiment with giving loads of files the same identifier – not sure what iTunes will do in this case.
The location should point to the RSS feed where new episodes can be downloaded. For many of you, you won't need to bother setting this.
    Hope this helps.

  • Cannot change media kind on videos

iTunes will not let me change the media kind of videos I've imported. I want to change them from movie to tv show as have previously done on a windows version of iTunes, but since moving to mac it is not letting me. Is there any way round this as I would like a tidy library with all my TV shows grouped together.
    Thanks

    Open iTunes.
Select the file(s) you want to change. You may have to do this one at a time. Press command–i (Info). Go to the Options tab, and change the media type to TV show.
I just tried it on a movie, and it works just fine.

  • When importing songs from a cd into itunes, the songs get separated into multiple albums instead of one.  How do I fix this problem?

I recently tried to import a cd that I got into itunes.  When it imported, instead of being one album by one artist, it created multiple ablums by the same artist.  Does anyone know how to fix this problem to bring all the files into one album by the same artist?

Generally all you need to do is fill in an appropriate Album Artist. For more details see my article on Grouping Tracks Into Albums, in particular the topic One album, too many covers.

  • HT4622 How to import .band and .mid files into GarageBand for iOS

Using GarageBand for MacOS X, I have no difficulty importing and playing .mid (MIDI) files.  Indeed, I can even rename .kar (Karaoke) files to .mid, import them into GarageBand for MacOS X and see the lyrics along with the score.  Using File Sharing for iOS apps in iTunes.app, I have tried to import .mid and .band files (made from .mid files with GarageBand for MacOS X) using this mechanism.  I get no errors but it doesn't seem to work.  That is, neither the .band file nor the .mid file are accessible from within GarageBand for iOS as far as I can tell.  What should I be doing instead?

As I understand it GarageBand for iOS .band projects can be imported to GarageBand for OS X, but the reverse isn't true. GarageBand for iOS does not import midi files.
The File Sharing section of iTunes doesn't validate the files you put into it, but if the app doesn't like the structure of the file it will just ignore it.

  • HT1212 When I plug in my iphone into itunes for the first time will i lose everything?

Ive had my iphone for over a year now and it is rather full so was hoping to take stuff off of it and add it to my pc to make room on my phone but i havent yet had it hooked up to itunes on my pc so will i lose everything? please help!

Well, you certainly aren't using it the way Apple intended or describes in the manual, and you have been running a huge risk of losing everything. But if you have never synced it with any computer at all you shouldn't lose anything by syncing now. In iTunes on your computer open Preferences/Devices tab, and check the box to not automatically sync. Then connect the phone. When it appears in iTunes click on its name, then choose "Back Up Now". After you have backed up you can sync safely. If you have photos in the Camera Roll transfer them to a photo app on your computer the same way you would for any digital camera (not using iTunes).

  • Cannot set Media Kind to Audiobook.  Defaults back to Music

Can anybody offer input on why MP3s cannot have the "Media Kind" set to Audiobook in iOS5.  The setting will default back to music automatically.
This was not the case with iOS4...

Right click on the video and select "Get Info" and click on the "Options" tab scroll down to "Media Kind" and select "TV Show" to "Music Video."
    Best of luck!

  • ITunes changing media kind

iTunes Match seems to have a mind of its own.
Here's my problem. I recorded a programme from the radio purely to listen to at a later time. It is a mixture of interview and classical music. Recorded as an AAC file at 320kbps. File size 161mb. So I do not want this to upload to iTunes match (it is one of a series of 5 related programmes).
I know that if I import this into iTunes with Match turned on it will just assume it is music and it will lock the media kind. So I turn iTunes Match off and then import the file. I change the medai type to Audiobook and the file disappears into my books section safe from the grip of Match.
I then turn on Match again. And as if by magic a few minutes later it has hauled the programme from the Books section and back into music and changed the media kind back to music, greyed it out and started uploading the file.
So my workaround has been defeated.
    I am using iTunes 10.6.1
I have generally been happy with iTunes match which after a fairly indifferent match performance at the start now seems to be delivering a consistently good performance matching music I expect it to match.
But unless Apple develop an option to exclude files from matching or uploading I fear that I shall not be bothering to renew my Match sub.
If anyone can supply a diffirent workaround I'd love to learn of it. (I have already tried using Podcast as an alternative media type but iTunes changes that one too).

    This for Mac only (sorry).
'Subler' offers a nice 'clean' way of adding the requisite tags to m4a files, also for iTunes U.
    It's free at http://code.google.com/p/subler/
This works only for m4a files. I have not found a solution for mp3s.
Do not add your track to iTunes yet, instead, open it in Subler.
In Subler, make sure that the track has at least the Name, Artist and Album tags set (under 'Metadata', create them as necessary using the small '+'-menu down left).
    - For a Podcast, under 'Other Settings' check 'Options: Podcast' and save.
    - For iTunes U, under 'Other Settings' choose 'Media Kind' > 'iTunes U' and save.
Now add your file to iTunes.
    And Apple: please fix!

  • Changing Media Kind To Podcast

    Hi,
I have downloaded some free podcasts from Soundcloud but they are not going into my podcast tab in iTunes. I have clicked
'Get Info" and changed media kind to Podcast but it just disappears from my library and seems to go missing. It still plays from "Recently Added" Playlist but doesn't show in Podcasts tab or Music Tab. Can anyone explain why?
    Thanks
    Matt

I'm also unable to change a couple of files' media kind from 'Music' to 'Podcast', no matter how much info I include.  I can change the media kind to 'Audiobook' and they appear in the "Books" section, but if I change it to 'Podcast' and click OK they remain in "Music", and when I check the info the media kind has reset to 'Music'.  Very frustrating.
Ironically, they were podcast episodes I had to purchase through iTunes as I accidentally deleted the original downloads.  They downloaded as music not podcasts (since they were purchased, not "subscribed" to) and when I tried to change their media kind to 'Podcast' I had the above problem, but after the first try it simply greyed-out the media kind drop-down.  I then re-encoded them as MP3s thinking that the protected MPEG-4 files wouldn't allow a change in media kind, but after the re-encode I've had the above problem.  I just want to put them with the rest of the podcasts in the series/season.

  • Cannot change media type

I imported an audiobook from CD to my library and wanted to change afterwards the media type from "music" to "audiobook" to shift to the audiobook section. Did not work. In "information"-> "options", the media type "music" shows in grey, cannot be changed. I am using the newest itunes version on a MAC.

That's correct, you cannot change media type whilst match is turned on.
Suggest that you delete audiobook from the cloud and library but do not move file to trash.
Turn off match, readd track and change media type from music to audiobook.
You can now turn match back on.

You posted to the wrong forum.    I've asked this be moved.  iBook in Notebook forum refers to Apple's pre-2007 consumer notebook.  Since I don't use the eBooks Apple sells, someone else in the correct forum should answer when this thread gets moved to:

  • I cannot change apple id when the app store asks me to update anything

i cannot change apple id when the app store asks me to update anything

App Store products can only be updated by signing in to the store with the same Apple ID that was originally used to download them. You can't update anything, including your own purchases, as long as there are pending updates linked to the other ID.
If you can't sign in with the other ID, you have to delete all the apps that are linked to it. If you don't know which apps those are, see below.
    1. Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    kMDItemAppStoreHasReceipt=1
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    2. In the Finder, press command-F to open a search window, or select
              File ▹ Find
from the menu bar. In the search window, select
              Search: This Mac
from the row of tokens below the toolbar. Below that is a popup menu of search criteria, initially showing Kind. From that menu, select
              Other...
A sheet will drop down. In that sheet, select
              Raw Query
as the criterion, then click OK or press return.
Now there will be a text box to the right of the menu of search criteria. That's where you enter the raw search query. Click in that box and paste the text you copied earlier by pressing command-V.
    3. The search window will now show all the App Store products that are installed. Compare those search results with the list of your purchases from the App Store. To see the complete list, you may need to unhide hidden purchases. If any apps were download from the App Store using other Apple ID accounts that you control, sign in to the store under each of those ID's and check the purchases.
    4. At least one of the apps in the Spotlight search results is not among your purchases in the App Store. Delete each such item by following the instructions in the Apple Support article linked above.
    5. Quit and relaunch the App Store.
If you find these instructions confusing, ask for an alternative method.
