Cannot change permissions to external hard drives

My usb partitions are all set to "custom" permissions and they cannot be changed no matter what I have tried. I tried creating new Administrator accounts but I cannot assign any new accounts or settings to the partitions. They merely appear on the desktop with a lock icon on them.
What caused this issue is I wanted to remove the annoying "unknown user" under permissions for an external partition. It would not allow me to do that so I tried to apply disk permissions to "all enclosed items". This did not help either so I tried repairing disk permissions and it appeared to start to fix a trillion disk permission errors that would take 2 hours estimated to do so. It suggested canceling and reinstalling the OS after backing up your files.
So I took that suggestion, cancelled the repairing process, but was not able to back up my files because of this change to the partitions that all now appear with a lock.
I have a feeling it will require some Terminal commands to reapply new permissions to the partitions, which I would need help doing.
Thanks for any assistance.

you should never use "apply to enclosed items" on a system drive or on system created folders. that includes the Applications folder, your home directory, your desktop folder etc. Use it only on folders you create yourself. to unlock the external drives you need to run the following terminal commands (copy and paste please)
sudo chflags nouchg /Volumes/"drive name"
sudo chmod 775 /Volumes/"drive name"
Put the name of the affected drive in the above. KEEP the quotes. You'll be prompted to enter your admin password (which you won't see). that's normal.

  • Can't change permissions to external hard drive

Okay...so far switching to a mac from a PC has been extremely painful. I currently have an external harddrive that I only have read access to. When I go to File>Get Info I cannot change this to Write access. How can this be so hard.

Check the disk's format in the Get Info window; if this is listed as Windows NT Filesystem, you cannot write to it from Mac OS X. In this case, you will need to copy everything that you want to keep off of it and then use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to erase the drive.

  • PC cannot recognize iMac's external Hard Drive on network

I have a network with my PC and iMac. The iMac has an external hard drive that I recently added. I can see my PC from the Mac and I can see the iMac from the PC. What I cannot see is the external Hard Drive connected to the Mac from my PC, only the normal folders on my Mac. Can't find anything to allow me to do this.

Before I tried the software suggested I spoke with my son who finally gave me a script to enter in terminal which added the external drive as something that would be recognized. After a few tries it actually worked and I can read and write to my external drive from my PC. Thanks for the advice and assistance.
Now I just have to figure out how to get iLife 06 to load as it keeps crashing my Mac. Tried 6 times and now I have no iPhoto nor the iWeb, 2 of the 3 programs I really need and use!

  • IPod cannot be synced because external hard drive could not be read

I moved my music folder to an external hard drive to create space on my laptop, and changed the location under Preferences / Advanced. Since I did this, my iPod trys to automatically sync but gives the error message "The iPoD "[name]" cannot be synced. The disk could not be read from or written to." The external hard drive is on and working. Is there some reason that the iPod will not sync with this external hard drive? What do I need to do to fix it? Thanks, Bill

    First question, since you made
the change, can you still play your music from within
    iTunes?
    Patrick
Sorry for the delay in answering as I have been traveling. Yes, I can play music from iTunes. The music is located on my external hard drive. iTunes software is on my laptop, and the music library points to the music folder on my external hard drive.

  • Cannot Find Photos on External Hard Drive Using iPhoto and Time Machine

    Hi everyone,
This is my first time posting on this forum and am really hoping for some help! I have a 2006 PowerBook G4 that is running iPhoto and Time Machine, and I've used an external hard drive to backup everything on the computer via Time Machine. When I plug the external hard drive into my newer 2010 MacBook Pro, I follow this path to try to access the photos:
         External Hard Drive > Backups.backupd > PowerBook G4 12" > Latest > Macintosh HD > Users > Me > Pictures > iPhoto Library
When I click "iPhoto Library", I get the following message:
"The iPhoto Library is a Time Machine backup, and so cannot be used as the main library.  Relaunch iPhoto with <option> key held down to choose another   library."
So, I do as the error message says and I hold down the "option" key and iPhoto launches and says:
What Photo Library do you want iPhoto to use?
In this case, I choose "Other Library..." and again follow this path:
         External Hard Drive > Backups.backupd > PowerBook G4 12" > Latest > Macintosh HD > Users > Me > Pictures > iPhoto Library
When I choose this, I again get the following message:
The iPhoto Library is a Time Machine backup, and so cannot be used as the main library.  Relaunch iPhoto with <option> key held down to choose another   library.
So as you can see, I'm feeling a bit like I'm chasing my tail in trying to open these photos. I did follow another user's advice and confirm that all photos are infact on the hard drive by using the "control" button and clicking "iPhoto Library" under the pictures folder, and choosing "Show Package Contents". All looks to be in tact in the "originals" folder when showing package contents, however, I just can't find a way to actually view the photos in iPhoto. I really don't want to import all the photos to my current MacBook Pro, because I'd like them to live on the external hard drive (which is formatted for Macs) so that I can browse the photos on the external drive, rather than housing it on my computer.
One other thing I tried was opening iPhoto on my MacBook Pro and going to File > Browse Backups...  which essentially opens Time Machine and shows me the photos on my MacBook Pro but gives me no option to view them from my External Hard Drive.
Any super users out there willing to lend me some help?
    Thanks!

The iPhoto Library is a Time Machine backup, and so cannot be used as the main library.  Relaunch iPhoto with <option> key held down to choose another   library.
You can have an iPhoto library on an external drive and use it from different machines
and you can have a Time Machine backup
The two can not be on the same volume - and iPhoto can not access the TM backup - it must be restored to use it

  • How can I keep my iTunes folder from changing from my external hard drive?

I have an external hard drive connected to my Time Capsule.  I have changed my iTunes preferences to store my media on the external hard drive.  Whenever I shut down iTunes and restart it, the preferences revert back to my hard drive.
    Any suggestions?  Is this normal?
    Any information is much appreciated.

Well - first, I shut down iTunes and restarted it, the external drive was still in the Preferences.  I shut down the computer, and restarted it, the Preferences reverted.
From what I can tell, the hard drive never shut off - I don't know what the deal is - I've contacted Apple support and scheduled time to see if there is something in the set up I am missing.  Will let you know.

  • Cannot retrieve photos from external hard drive

I had to upgrade my OS so that i could download the newest version of adobe photoshop.  this upgrade also upgraded my iPhoto and erasing all photos.  I do have photos backed up on external hard drive but cannot retrieve photos from the external hard drive.

this upgrade also upgraded my iPhoto and erasing all photos.
No update to the OS upgrade iPhoto too. So something else is going on there.
There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 10 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • I cannot find my WD external hard drive.  It has worked perfectly until today.  I checked the cords but still no luck.  Help!

I have a WD external hard drive that I have used for some time with no problems.  There is plenty of space left on it.  It is dividied in two with Time Machine and a personal section.  I backed it up yesterday after adding to it.  Today, when I plugged it into my computer, it is not listed as one of my devices and does not appear on my Desktop as usual.  The USB cord is firmly attached and lights up the drive box but I even changed to a new cord and it still does not work.  What can I do?  I am working on a project and need those files to continue!!!!

likely a dead SATA bridge card,  very common

  • Why does my Mac ask for my password when I try to make a change on my external hard drive with Time Machine?

I recently formatted the hard drive to do a fresh install of Mavericks on my Macbook Pro Retina. I then formatted my Western Digital 2 TB External Hard Drive for Time Machine. I then began storing others files and folders on the external hard drive along side the TIme Machine Backup folder. Everytime I added a folder or changed a foler name it asked for my password.
This has never happened to me before using any other OSX.
I apologize if this has been resolved before, I'm new to the communities and have yet to find a solution.

It is not a good idea to be storing other Stuff on your Time Machine drive. You may need an additional separate hard drive for those things.
Once you tell Time Machine to use a Drive, Time Machine owns the Drive. You (as a User) do not have permission to put things there. If you insist, it will do it, but wants your Admin password to do it.

  • Why can't I make changes on my external hard drive?

I have an external hard drive that I set up through Windows XP that I can now access through Mac OS X on my MacBook. Unfortunately, I'm not able to delete or make any changes to any of the files through the Finder. Why is that, and can it be changed?

Thanks everyone. I suppose I'll just reformat for Apple. I need to use it for large files, and I suppose I could survive without editing ablities on Windows.
There's another alternative, format it as exFat, 4G limit does not apply and OSX + Windows will be able to read/write.

  • Missing photo links - changing name of external Hard Drive location

I have searched for the answer to this high and low without success if someone can help...
I have a large collection of photos that I store on an external firewire hard drive (too many to store on my macbook pro). My iphoto library is on my Mac and when importing photos to iphoto I did not import the files so the originals remain on the external hard drive and are therefore linked to in iphoto.
I did it this way, rather than storing the library database on the external drive, so that I could access the information and thumbnails when travelling and not connected to my external drive.
I've upgraded my external hard drive and it will have a different name. I need to transfer all the photos across to the new hard drive.
Is there a quick way to reconnect all my original photos when transferred to the new hard drive or a better way to transfer them? Having tried to copy them across manually, obviously as expected I get a missing photo exclamation mark and am asked to browse to the file to relink. This is OK to reconnect one or two photos, but would take me forever with 17,000.
I remember Adobe Photo Album had a command reconnect missing files, and it would go off and search for the files you may have moved location (or changed the directory name in which they were held). Is such a function available in iphoto? I've tried the iphoto re-build functions, but this doesn't look in other attached volumes for the photos.
Alternatively, is there a way to edit the iphoto library database to do a search and replace of the Volume name to the new name and reconnect the link to then photos? e.g. Can you manually edit the albumdata.xml file (and would this be the file to edit) for example, and rebuild the database with Photo Library Manager?
Can you re-import all the photos from the new location, and rebuild the links that way, or does this create duplicate entries and not merge album, keyword event data etc for each photo?
My last resort is re-importing all the photos again, but of course I'd loose all my keywords, albums, events and other info I've spent a long time entering into iphoto.
    Thanks
    Phil

I just wanted to close this off to say that my solution worked fine and my iphoto libraries are up and running in perfect order again. And to summarise the solution so you don't have to read the entire post above.
This solution is for those wanting to have the iphoto library on your Mac and store the original photos linked elsewhere on an external / network drive (i.e. not imported into the iphoto library). Then you want to change the location where the originals are stored (say for example you get a new bigger external Hard Drive - like I did), and that new location will have a different name. Most people recommend importing the photos into the iphoto library, keeping everything together, and this can then be moved anywhere and accessed.
So to summarise, if you are moving original photos linked into iphoto:
    1. Back up everything you can first...
    2. First try moving the files (not copying and deleting) - the aliases may reconnect, especially if they are on your main HD. You may need to manually reconnect one file in each sub-directory.
    3. Move your photos to your external HD / network drive. Note if the new place has the same name as your old external HD then the aliases probably won't need to be fixed.
    4. Download and install File Buddy or similar Alias 'fixer'
    5. Go to your iphoto Library, right click, "Show Package Contents"
    6. Copy the "Originals" directory to another location so that file buddy can read it.
    7. Run File buddy, fixing the aliases in your copy of the Originals folder, pointing to where you've moved your photos too (restrict the directories as much as possible where you point file buddy to search for the missing files to speed it up). You will only have issues if you have multiple copies of the same file - i.e. that have the same file name and creation date, and file buddy will give you a list of these. This in itself is a good check to see you don't have the same file in two places - I only had issues with folders of photos that I'd been given from family in which there were multiple copies of the same photo. I've now cleaned these up, saved space and ran file buddy again to finish the job off.
    8. Finally, move this now fixed "Originals" folder back into your iphoto library (package contents) - writing over / replacing the original "Originals" directory.
All being well, should be fixed!
Just to share with you the benefits I find of having my photos stored on an external HD and the iphoto library on my Macbook:
-- Saves space on my limited internal HD
-- others can access the photos, set up and manage their own iphoto libraries pointing at the same originals, and we don't need two copies of the original files
-- I can access the iphoto library and manage albums, add keywords, titles, etc when not connected to the External HD, though you're limited to viewing the (not too small) thumbnail pictures iphoto stores in its library
I'm loving iphoto even more now, it makes managing and viewing my 1000's of photos a pleasure.
    Cheers
    Phil

  • Cannot Daisy Chain My External Hard Drives on Macbook Pro Unibody

I have a 2010 Macbook Pro 13.3.  I am trying to daisy chain my 2 external hard drive enclosures to my firewire 800 port.  The enclosures are manufactured by Vantec, model Nextar 3.  Both devices have 2 firewire 400/800 ports and they advertise that they are able to be daisy chained.
My issue is:  I hook one to the other and power them both on and nothing seems to happen.  I can power one up and the drive will show up on my desktop, but when I power the second drive up, I get the pop up screen saying I have disconnected my device without properly shutting it down, and then the drive is gone.  I have tried connecting them several different ways.  Im not sure if its the external enclosures, if there is a process I'm supposed to follow, of if the Macbook Pro Unibody does not support daisy chaining firewire 800 devices.
Please, if anybody has had the same experience and has been able to fix it, let me know.  I am in need of some serious hard drive spance and am going to return both enclosures if I cannot get them to work.
    Thank you.

    I'm having the same issue.
I'v also found that I am able to daisy chain other drives throught the vantec drives.
And that, when  I get the pop up screen saying I have disconnected my device without properly shutting it down, and the drive is gone. I'm only able to remount the drive after restarting the computer while the drive is conected and powered. It won't apear on other computers untill the reboot sequence is preformed.
    Strange,
Let me knwo if you've found a solution.
    thanks,

  • Having issues with permissions on external hard drive.

I'm very new to my MacBook Pro, and I'm having an issue with my external hard drive. I used it to bring important files (mostly music) from my windows 7 laptop to my mac. Once I finished that I noticed that I was missing some of my music which luckily I have on CD so I uploaded them to another computer and loaded them onto my EH. This is where the problem occurs, when I drag my music from my EH most of it gets copied, but a small number end up giving me an error and won't go to iTunes. I've dug a little deeper into the issue and it all comes back to not having proper permissions to us my EH. However the songs that were imported still open in itunes when clicked on. I've tried looking for the lock symbol under Get Info, and it isn't there.
    Any Ideas?

Yes - with Windows/Mac 'compatibility, it's really a one or the other compatibility - without third party software. Just as Paragon has software that will enable you to read & write to an NTFS volume on a Mac, so they have software for Windows that will read Mac-formatted drives - http://www.paragon-software.com/home/hfs-windows/.
NTFS, with Paragon's NTFS for Mac, is probably the best way to go if you want to 'share' the drive with both Macs and Windows machines.

  • Locked Windows/Folder, Cannot Move Files On External Hard Drive

I'm running Tiger 10.4.11 on an iMac and am the only user, and therefore, administrator. I'm encountering a weird, albeit small, problem on one of my external hard drives (Seagate 320 gigs): I have boatloads of video files stored on the drive, but suddenly cannot move files into folders within the drive (I see a white "do not enter" kind of a sign over whatever icon I try to move). I can't move these files off the drive and onto my iMac's internal hard drive, either. I can only delete them. I can add new files to the drive, but then cannot move those either (can only delete them).
The folders and drive are not locked, I have read & write access, etc., so there doesn't seem to be any reason for me to be barred from moving items. Any clues? Many thanks.

Thank you for your reply and kind welcome.
That's a great tip, but that box was already checked, so I'm afraid that wasn't a solution. The problem ended up "solving itself" after I left my machine off for the day while I went to work. I may never know why that error occurred, but I certainly don't care, as long as it doesn't happen again. Take care.

  • Files cannot be located from external hard drive.

I just moved all my iTunes content to my laptop from my external hard drive (that I had been previously using with my PC), thinking it would be available on both as long as I had the Hard Drive plugged in. When I got downstairs however, I found that none of the songs could be located on the PC from the external hard drive, even though I had it plugged in. How do you solve this?

Then I tried to fix the problem by dragging my music from my external, to my iTunes but stopped it when I realised I was going to have a whole iTunes full of duplicates. (still got like 80 though )
