Cannot charge iPhone via non-computer USB

My iPhone charges fine when plugged into a computer or when the cable is plugged into the AC brick that came with the phone. However, I have a few other power sources with USB jacks that the iPhone seems to not charge on. A 30 GB iPod does charge on these devices.
One example is a Xantrex Xpower Powersource Mobile Mini. It's one of those pocket size things with a Li battery inside that can be charged by AC or DC (car). It has a USB port that then provides 5V for charging cell phones, etc. The device works: it charges a 30 GB iPod and RAZR phone with no problems. When I plug in the iPhone, the iPhone does not show the charging battery.
Is this known behavior? Does the iPhone expect the data lines on a USB port to be "official"? The spec shows pull up/down resistors on both. The AC brick from Apple might include these to keep its port in spec????
Anyone having similar issues?
TIA

Thanks for the reply, even if it is less than encouraging.
We do use an inverter in the car sometimes, and I have another semi-portable power source with a built-in inverter that we use the AC brick. However, the Mobile Mini (similar in intent to Griffin TuneJuice sold in Apple's on-line store) is for extended power on airplanes, trains, buses, etc., where there may not be a power source and where the device is especially useful for passing time.
Question: does iPod touch has similar behavior?

  • Charging iPhone 3G While Computer is Off/Asleep/Standing By

I recently purchased an iPhone 3G and its dock, but it turned out that I cannot charge the iPhone via USB while my computer is off, asleep, or standing by even though the dock is connected to a third party's AC-powered USB hub, which enables me to charge my iPod nano (1st gen.) in the same situations.
I know I can charge the iPhone anytime if I use the Power Adaptor came along in the package. However, switching between the connection to the USB hub for syncing and charging, and to the Power Adaptor just for charging when I don't use my computer is kinda troublesome for me. I mean it would be great if I could keep the iPhone on the dock for charging regardless of my computer's status.
Does anyone know any AC-powered USB hubs with that capability?

Yeah, wouldn't it be nice to just walk in the door and pop the iPhone into a dock and know that you'll have a functioning phone in the morning? I've tried a few things to no avail. Allow me to list:
-USB hub connected to computer only works when the computer is on
-USB hub on AC only - nothing
-USB hub on AC and connected to computer only works when the computer is on
-USB hub connected to iPhone's AC adapter - nothing
-USB hub connected to it's own AC and iPhone's AC - nothing
-USB "Y" cable works when the data/power end is plugged into an awake computer or the iPhone's AC adapter
-USB "Y" does not work across the power only end at all no matter what I've plugged it into
-The Wii and Tivo will charge the iPhone straight up as will a USB battery I have
-Tried my leftover Xbox 360 HDDVD drive for fun and no charge (I didn't hook the drive to my computer, just plugged it into the wall)
All I can guess is that the iPhone needs some sort of phantom data signal from an awake computer source or it's AC adapter. I want to try a USB A/B switch. If it weren't so costly I would try a wireless USB hub to see if it provides that phantom data at all times since it isn't connected to a computer at all (or possibly the opposite being true that it will never sync since it isn't connected).
Talk about annoying. If there was a true "Y" USB cable than theoretically I could plug one end into the wall and one to the PC.

  • I can't charge iPhone 3GS with computer or sync

I can't charge my iPhone with my computer, but the rest of my family can sync their iPods(two 2nd gens and one 4th gen) It works fine with the wall charger, so I know it's not the cord (Plus I've tried other cords). Also, I've tried switching the USB slot, using compressed air to see if it would clear out possible dust, trying a different computer, and many other tricks, plus completely restarting the iPhone. It wouldn't be a big deal if I could still sync it with the computer one last time so I could sync wirelessly from now on, but I can't.
Lastly, it is out of warranty and I did not purchase the iPhone so I don't even know if I could take it to the Apple Store to see if they could fix it.

  • Cannot Charge iPhone without unlocking passcode first

Dont know if this was Designed this way or if this is a bug but...
I have a passcode on my phone, if I plug it into my MacBook running Leopard, it says cannot charge phone unless u enter passcode.
Was just wondering if this was supposed to be like this.
    Thanks.

This happens to me everytime too. I have downloaded Photoshop again to fix the corrupt files, but it didn't help. So now when I connect my phone, and Photoshop opens, I just click on the iTunes icon on my desktop. To upload any pics I have, I choose another option to upload them. Then go to Photoshop, get pics, and look for files on my computer. Adobe will stay open and will not allow me to cancel or close. Then I have to do ctl, alt, del. Apparently this is an issue with Adobe. Hope this helps.....

  • Charging iPhone via USB vs. FireWire

My iPhone charges fine when plugged into my computer via USB cable. However, it doesn't seem to charge when plugged in using the iPhone-to-Firewire cable. Is there a reason for this or do I have a faulty cable? Thanks for any help.

The iPhone has different power requirements for changing that Firewire does not use.

  • Cannot charge iPhone 5 because USB is "using too much power"

Last night I tried charging my iPhone 5 on my MacBook Pro and everything went fine. However, when I tried to do the same thing today, every time I would plug my device in I would get an error message saying that the USB device is using too much power and has been disabled. Is there anyway to override this so that I can charge my phone?

It'll still carry the Apple warranty. My suggestion would be to bring your Macbook along and show them, even if you go to Verizon. You're better off at the Apple store anyway. If it turns out the cable isn't the problem, the diagnosis is free at the Genius Bar and one way or the other your problem should be fixed. Just make an appointment first.

  • Cannot charge iphone after clicking "do not trust this computer" by accident.

How can I get my computer to recognize the iphone again?
I find it quite ridicolous that i get asked the question everytime i put my computer into the usb port, I was bound to misclick at one point or another.  So now I help getting my computer to recognize the phone again.

OK so here is where we stand, IOS7 "trust computer" has stopped:- routers:- Zoom 4504, Edimax 3G, TP-Link TL-MR3420 and ASUS DSL-N12U a Car Iphone connection and a MACBOOK! all now can  no longer connect.
I tried using a multipoint USB port, no joy.
I can not see Apple doing anything about it as it is only the three of us here having problems....or so it seems.
I would like to thank Novatech for letting me buy and return the last 2 routers on the "not working for IOS7 anymore list"
"trust this computer" if you have any problems with it please post here.

  • Cannot charge iPhone 4 unless I turn it off.

All of a sudden my iPhone stopped charging, so when I turned it off it did charge. Really annoying and cannot connect to the PC.

    Hi Ina-mar,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  If you are unable to restore your iPhone, follow the steps in the article below:
If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201263
    Use recovery mode
You might need to use recovery mode to restore your device in these cases:
iTunes doesn't recognize your device or says it's in recovery mode.
You see the Apple logo onscreen for several minutes with no progress bar.
You see the Connect to iTunes screen.
Learn what to do if you see the progress bar onscreen for several minutes.
To put your device into recovery mode, follow these steps:
Turn off your device and leave it off.
Plug in your device's USB cable to a computer with iTunes.
Hold down the Home button on your device as you connect the USB cable. Keep holding down the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
When you see this screen, release the Home button. If you don't see this screen, try steps 1 through 3 again.
When your device is connected, iTunes will open. You'll see a message saying that iTunes has detected an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch in recovery mode.
Use iTunes to restore your device. Restoring in recovery mode will erase your device. If you previously synced with iTunes or iCloud, you might be able to restore from your backup.
I hope this information helps ....
    - Judy

  • Charging iPhone via Airport Express...

    Hello all...
I just plugged my iPhone into the USB port on my Airport Express to see if it would charge, and so far, no problems. Has anyone else charged their iPhone this way? Any problems? I've had issues charging via Firewire in the past but since the AE has a USB port I figured I'd give it a try.

    Thanks Henry!
Not sure about that genius part though...but thanks just the same. I've had my iPhone charging for about two hours now and so far, no problems. No heat issues or anything. I think it'll work just fine.
    Best regards,
    Mike.

  • Repeated chime when charging iPhone via mains power

When attempting to charge my iPhone 4s with mains power I get a repeated chime, and the phone will not charge. However, when using the same USB cable, and charging via a USB port the phone charges normally, without the repeated chimes

Yes, I'm using the original adapter. I confess I haven't checked for lint etc but will do so. I am able to recharge my iPad, using the same adapter and the USB-Lightning cable, in the same socket. I am currently using the original charging cable connected to a powered USB socket and the iPhone is charging normally.
Should add that I took the phone in to my nearest Genius bar 2 weeks ago after experiencing problems on voice reception during phone calls (though my voice seemed to be received OK by recipients). Problem appears to have been solved by a restore to factory settings reset. Probably unconnected with current issue.

  • Cannot Charge iphone 4s while it is "On"

Hi. i faced this problem where i cant even charge my iphone 4s while it is on.
All this while the iphone 4s works perfectly.
    i) Last week, when i try to charge the phone (using my laptop), i realize that it wont charge.
ii) i try to clean the iphone charging port, with the idea that may be its too dirty/ dusty at the charging port. When i connect the charger to my iphone, it wont charged.
iii) Then, instead of connecting the USB cable to my laptop, i try to connect directly to the power plug, but it still wont charge.
iv) So i thought that may be the problem is the cable it self. So i went to Machines (Authorised Apple Products) and bought a new USB cable, However my iphone still wont charge.
So at night the battery is fully drained and empty, i try to connect the phone while it is OFF, and in the morning, when i wake up, the phone have been fully charged (100%).
So i thought the phone is ok now. When i reach at the office and try to charge the phone again, then i realize, my iPhone wont charge while it is on. it will only charge when it is off. i cant even restore it as my iphone cannot be connected to itunes while it is on.
Anyone having the same problem? Hope you guys can help.

Yes you can. Also, you can view the User Guide here http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iphone_user_guide.pdf and you can go to http://www.apple.com/iphone/iphone-4s/specs.html

After i have updated my iphone 4 software version to ios6.1.2, it cannot be charged using the charger adapter that is from the box that also contains the iphone. It was charging fine after the update. How to i solve this problem when it is left with 33% or less?

    The Basic Troubleshooting Steps are:
