Cannot close opened windows

How do I get out of programs  if i am not given the closing option?
I do not have a red dot closing option on my opened windows

Are you able to click on the Application name and select quit?...
And if that doesn't work, are you able to force quite?...
And if that does't work, maybe relaunching the Finder will help...

Started writing a review of book after reading.  Cannot close out window to go back to Library.

A few days ago I ran Onyx and it told me to repair disks from my boot up disk..
Did you do that? If not, you should follow these directions:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417
If you did, was the repair successful?
Basically, the 'licence' window that comes up when you open certain applications e.g. Aperture, doesn't disappear like it is supposed to and just stays put..
Sounds like those applications are crashing at startup... unless they are opening other windows behind that "splash screen" window, in which case there's something very weird going on. If they just get to the splash screen and then stop, they've crashed.
Sounds like whatever hard drive problems you had have caused some corruption to important parts of your system or those applications. I would imagine you're going to have to reinstall those applications at a minimum. Since it seems like it's happening with new apps that you have downloaded recently, though, it's more likely you're going to need to reinstall the system.
Whatever the case, if you don't have good backups, the absolute first thing you need to do before you do anything else is to make a backup. See my [Mac Backup Guide|http://www.reedcorner.net/thomas/guides/backups> for help with that. Depending on the level of damage your hard drive experienced, though, it may be too late... there may be documents somewhere that are damaged and can't be opened that you haven't discovered yet.
If you reinstall the system, I'd advise moving your data back over from a backup manually and reinstalling applications from scratch, using Migration Assistant sparingly, if at all. You don't want to move damaged settings files or applications back onto a squeaky-clean system.

I downloaded the latest iTunes software update and it properly installed.  But,  I cannot close the update window showing it was completed and the blue completion bar is full but cannot cancel or close it either.  Any ideas on how to clear that out and close the window.  Tried to quit on both the big window and the software update title in the menu bar.  No luck.

Tried that by shutting down via the power button only as the normal shutdown was nixed by the open window issue.  It did not help.  Found a very similar question in the discussions and it recommended "Force Quit".  That worked and the update works normal and the window is gone.  Thanks!

  • Can't close open windows,  Please Help

I'll have a Safari window open, with multiple tabs, I can close the individual tabs, but to close the only window left, I cannot close it. Any popup windows also will not close. They will shrink to dock, but I cannot close them. Any Help?

I was facing exactly the same problem after the 10.4.11 / Safari 3.0.4 Update. It is most likely caused by an input manager you have forgotten about. In my case it was the ancient Taboo 0.3. Go to
    Library > InputManagers
and check for a SIMBL folder.
Removal of said folder & restarting Safari solved the issue. Brute force of course, you can also look into
Library > Application Support > SIMBL > Plugins
    and delete the "Taboo.bundle".

  • Quicktime Will Not Close Open Windows

After I record a video Quicktime refuses to close any windows from those recordings.  When the red X is clicked quicktime will lag out for a few seconds at the end of which the window has not been closed.  The only way to get the window to close is to quit Quicktime with the "Close windows when quitting an application" preference enabled in the System Preferences > General.  If this preference is not enabled, Quicktime will refuse to quit and the program must be Force Quit.
I've gone and done the usual troubleshooting steps like rebooting, deleting preferences, etc...  This does not solve this issue leading me to believe it's either a poorly thought out "feature" or a bug.  Unless there is some new paradigm of closing windows that I am not familiar with of closing window, thanks to Apple;s new paradigm of changing tried and true methodologies for new "simpler", "let us do that for you" ones, this is extremely annoying for someone who want to itterate through multiple video takes quickly without unnecessarily tieing up system resources.  If I make a video that I don't want I want to just trash it and be done with it.
Anyway, does anyone know if there is any way to fix this so that I don't have dozens of videos active?

    Lets do a few things.
    1. Update QuickTime. http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
    2. Open up QuickTime player.
    3. Click on Edit> QuickTime Preferences>Advanced.
    4. In the center of this section there is a "Video" section select Safe Mode.
    5. Click on Ok and go ahead and close out of QuickTime.
I have also noted that there are SEVERAL bugs with QuickTime and Nvidia Chips.
A few things I suggest you do is to update all of your drivers, and install any pending Windows Updates.
Please post if this worked for you.

  • Sarari is not functioning properly I cannot close multiple windows that are open.

I cannot shut windows on Safari. Foxfire and chrome are usable but how can I close windows on Satari?

    Wylde,
You don't mention the device, or operating system you're using, so I don't know if this will apply to you or not.
I had this problem a few times during the time I've owned my i MAC.
If you haven't already used force quit, give it a try.  You probably already know that Force Quit is available when you click on the Apple Icon at the upper left hand corner of your screen.  It's probably a good idea to reboot afterwards.

  • Why does firefox tell me to close open window before it can open

when I try to open firefox get message "browser needs to be closed before opening"

    On a Mac, Firefox 4 is a 64 bit application.<br />
Not all plugins support 64 bit and if not then you need to start Firefox in 32 bit mode to use that plugin.
    # Close Firefox
    # Open the Applications folder in Finder
    # Right click or control-click the Firefox.app icon
    # Select "Get Info"
    # Select or Deselect "Open in 32-bit mode"
    # Close the "Firefox Info" window
    # Restart Firefox

  • Cannot close Paneltor window.

    Hi,
I have placed a custom element/component inside the Panelator window. I'm able to close the Panelator window if I don't click on the custom component sitting inside Panelator window. But if I click on the custom component inside Panelator window and then if I try to close the Panelator window, the window doesn't close and also After Effect Application window itself won't respond for any mouse events.
    What could be the issue?
    Thanks,
    Dheeraj.

This may be a long shot, but....
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed 10.4.11 and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 uses Safari 3.0.4 which is not a beta. If Safari 3.0.4 on 10.4.11 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
Moreover, trying to revert to Safari 2 when running 10.4.11 can have repercussions, as Safari 3.0.4 uses a completely different webcore on which other applications like iTunes, Mail etc also rely.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Two such add-on that have been frequently mentioned here for causing such problems are Piclens and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them and go the developer's sites to see if new versions are available for Safari 3.0.4.

  • Cannot close window (?!)

I can open and close new tabs, but I cannot close new windows with either the button or a keyboard shortcut.
I did have Safari Adblock installed but removing it completely made no difference.
    Help!

    Hi,
Check to see if you have any more 3rd party extensions installed that might be causing problems. These 2 locations are where most things are usually installed:
Hard drive > Users > Your username > Library > InputManagers
Hard drive > Library > InputManagers
If anything is present in either of these folders, move them onto your Desktop to disable them and then restart Safari afresh so that it is not running with these extensions.
If that doesn't help, try logging into another user account on your machine to see if the same problem appears there. You can use System Preferences > Accounts to add (and remove) a test account if you currently don't have another.
If things are ok in the other account, then we know the problem is somewhere within your account area and can concentrate there.

  • Mail windows cannot close

    Hi,
Since a recent upgrade (Mail is now at Version 4.2 (1078)), I often get situations where I cannot close openned email windows. I tried the following without success:
    * use the red "close" botton
    * use the menu File-> close
    * quit Mail (the openned window comes back when I launch)
    * force quit (same)
The only way I tought of for killing these annoying email windows is to send it to myself... not very productive.
I got that on both my desktop and laptop after a recent upgrade.
    Any one else got that?

I'm not quite sure I understand correctly -
when I start Mail, I have the main Mail "window" open; it shows the mailboxes in the left column, the list of email messages within the mailbox selected are in the top part of the window and, if I click on one, the message opens in the lower part of the window. That window will always be open while you have Mail open. I don't have a separate "email window" open unless I am typing a new message and that disappears as soon as I've sent the message. So I'm not sure why you would have several email windows open? Can you elaborate on exactly what they are or what might have caused it?
I never use the close (either button or File menu) because it seems somewhat pointless - I am either actively using Mail or I quit Mail when I'm done. Using Mac OS, you must use quit; using "close" will keep the application running (albeit in the background) until the Mac is shut down.
And, whatever window(s) were open when you quit (or closed) the application, the very same window(s) will open when you next start the application. That is a feature for your convenience, so you can get right back to where you left off. Try quitting (file - quit or command-q) Mail with only the main window open - you should get only that window when you next open it.
