Cannot close safari tabs

when i open tabs in safari i cannot close the tabs i can only close the entire window. what can i do to fix it? thanks

Hello rico:
Are you trying to close the tabs by clicking on the little "X?"
Run repair permissions as a precaution.
Close Safari, trash the Safari preference file (com.apple.safari.plist), open Safari, and reenter your personal preferences.

  • I cannot close a tab by clicking on the "x" - nor can I open a tab from the tab bar

On the tab bar, FF opens multiple "new tab" tabs. No matter what I do I cannot close these tabs, or any other tab, by clicking on the "x". Also, I cannot access these tabs by clicking on them.

Note that the X is a close button and that the new tab button is styled as a plus (+) sign.
You can find the New Tab button showing as a '+' on the Tab bar.<br />
You can open the Customize window and drag the New Tab button that shows as a plus sign (+) from the Tab bar on another toolbar and it will become a regular toolbar New Tab button.<br />
If you can't find the New Tab button then click the "Restore Default Set" button in the Customize window.<br />
If you want the New Tab button at the far right end of the Tab bar then place a flexible space to the left of it.<br />
You can check for problems with the localstore.rdf file.

  • Cannot close first tab (LH end one) with other open ones are closeable.

Cannot close first tab (LH end one) but others are closeable. Downloading indicator on tab continues to rotate indefinitely - windows under all tabs operate normally.
Opening an additional Firefox copy allows all tabs to work normally within that copy

I had this same problem for some time now. In another Mozilla Firefox forum page related to this search one user said to disable the add on "Invisible Hand". I did that and rebooted and have multiple pages open now with multiple tabs and I could shut down the first tab on all the open windows. I think the "Invisible Hand" add-on s the culprit, at least in my case.

  • I cannot close Safari.  Shutting down computer does not solve problem.

When I try to close Safari, the Quit Safari option on the menu list is light gray, and I cannot activate it.  I have tried shutting down or restarting my computer from the Apple Icon, but I cannot without closing Safari.  It is a vicious circle!  How can I close Safari under these conditions?

Hold down Option Command Escape at the same time... from the drop down Menu choose  Force Quit Safari.
    Or,
Click the Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click Force Quit.

  • Can remotely close Safari tabs on Macbook but not iPhone/iPad.

I am unable to remotely close iCloud Safari tabs on my mobile devices. iPhone and iPad are running iOS 8, and my Macbook Pro is running Yosemite. I can remotely close tabs from my Macbook, but when I try to swipe to delete iCloud tabs from my iPhone or iPad, I swipe, the red delete button shows up, but then I tap delete and nothing happens - the tab stays there and is still open on the original device.

I have been experiencing the exact same problems. Any help is appreciated!

  • Cannot close a tab

I have Firefox 3.6.12. In the last couple of days I have been having problems cosing tabs. I click on the cross on the tab but nothing happens. It only happens occasionaly on 1 tab. I can close other tabs in the session without a problem.
It is not specific to any particular website.
Clsoing Firefox and relaunching it seems to clear the problem.

I reinstalled 3.6.12 again today - and now I can close the first tab. Not sure if it is going to be messed up again. The other thing I noticed when the first tab is stuck is that it starts with session history also not working for that tab and back button quits working.

Edit: didn't know putting == makes the font

  • I cannot quit safari, tabbed webapges, or turn off the PC or restart.

I have a Snow Leopard Mac book pro and first I had no sound until I used the software volume and mute buttons.  Like a jiggling.  That worked but now safari won't quit and the quit safari button is greyed out.  Tabbed webapges have no x for closing.  I cannot restart or shutdown or power off.  Please help thanks.

Try to force quit Safari. To do it, hold Control, Command and Esc keys, select Safari in the window that will appear and force quit it

  • How to ristrict to one tab or close safari tabs?

    Hi,
I posted this at mac OS side accidently, nobody seemed to have an answer so I am trying this section too.
I have a case where I am setting up ipads to senior users (70+ years old).
They have set of links on their homepage, and rest has been cleaned out of their sight to keep it simple.
They cant really do gestures, even double-tabbing home is hard, all they want to do is read some newspapers and visit the sites they have the links to.
The problem is that when they open a link, browse the site / newspaper, press home to access the links again -> repeat -> there will be tons of tabs open, which causes problems and confusion.
And even if they close the whole ipad (power down, not just sleep), when it is powered on again, the tabs and even open apps are there???
Oh and the small x on tabs is way too small for them to use...
Is there really no way to restrict the safari to use just one tab? (open each link to same window?)
Is there an alternative browser or app that can do this?
Can this ipad "resume" function be disabled, so that shutdown is really a shutdown, and does not save states?
(the sleep function is nice to have, but shutdown should really close everything...)
Is there somekind of app that you can place on home screen to "reset state" so that everything is like it was shutdown?
(close apps and so-on, but keep the user data and settings)
Could easily pay some $ for a viable solution...

    Hi again,
The first ideas do not seem to solve my issue (thanks anyways), but the favorites bar is worth looking in to, as it seems that this way, only one tab would be required to visit the pages they want.
Just hope that the favorite links are not too small, I will get back to you later on.
    And thanks!
I just dont get it why changing this kinds of usability settings (have and option for bit larger icons and texts, little more browser options available etc.) is not possbile..
The price of tablets is not that high any more, so these small things would really help apple to target even greater market segment (children, elderly, motorically / visually impaired etc.).
Nowdays it seems that everyone focuses on high resolution, making everything smaller and at times, less user friendly just to gain better visual look...

  • Cannot Close Tabs in Minefield That's Running Flash

Just wanted to report a bug I've been noticing.  I'm using Minefield (64-bit) prerelease 4.0b7pre and when I have a tab open that has 64-bit flash running in it, I cannot close the tab anymore.  I need to close the entire browser instead.  This is repeatable regardless of the websites I visit, e.g. Stormpulse.com, Weather.com, Youtube.com.
    Thanks,
    Cythth

    Press apple shift and delete
If that does not work try this:
click on Finder in the lower left corner.
Then, in the top left corner click on the word finder
Scroll down to "Secure Empty Trash"
This will delete any file that may be open.

  • Cannot access safari but a small window appears on screen, cannot power off or restart

While on safari, it closed but has left a small window of page i was surfing, I cannot power-off ipad and will not let me go on safari or access anything

Close Safari and reboot your iPad. If you cannot close Safari or navigate to the home screen, just try the reboot described below.
Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to Safari if you don't see it, and then swipe "up" on the app thumbnail to close it.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • After upgrading iPad 2 to iOS 7 , cannot open new tabs in safari . When pushing on " " , Safari close the application .

After upgrading iPad 2 to iOS 7 , cannot open new tabs in safari . When pushing on " " , Safari close the application .

    Try a Restart.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
     Resetting your settings
You can also try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your device settings again.... All of the settings in the settings app will have to be re-entered. You won't lose any data, but it takes time to enter all of the settings again.
    Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Apple recommends this only if you are unable to restart it.
Or if this doesn't work and nobody else on the blog doesn't have a better idea you can contact Apple.
Here is a link to their contacts with most of the information below.

  • "X" in Safari tabs are gone: cannot close tabs

I cannot close tabs that I've opned in safari.
    Any Ideas?

Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Test after each one and stop when the problem is solved. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Quit and relaunch Safari. Force quit if necessary.
    2. From the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
    and confirm.
    3. If applicable, uninstall Glims and/or an application called "RedQuits." Log out or restart the computer.
    4. Start up in safe mode. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in. If you don't have the problem in safe mode, stop here and post your results. If you still have the problem in safe mode, go to the next step.
    5. Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Quit the application if it's running. Move the selected item to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Relaunch the application and test. If there's no change, quit again and put the item you moved back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Otherwise, delete the item you moved. If possible, restore it from a backup that predates the problem.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Cannot close or open tabs successively by one middle click

    Hello,
I cannot close, or open tabs by just one middle click on every tab. It is like if there is a timeout before it opens or close a new tab again, or I have to double click with middle button.
I have taken a look in about:config but found nothing that indicates such a feature.
    Thank you

You should absolutely never get a pop-up for The Safe Mac or the AdwareMedic websites.s.
    Tom,
After reading through what I presume is your website, which is highly informative and very well written by the way, I come away with the impression that you really have a firm understanding of the dirty things that can go on inside your machine and how they manage to exploit certain vulnerabilities.
With respect to pop-up ads and Safari, I have a question that you may able to answer. Three parts:
    (1)  How are they managing to get around all reasonable methods to block pop-up ad scripts? One would think that your browser ought not perform automatic script functions (like opening a new page ... or several) without your doing anything.
By example, I'm on several forums and if I am sent a PM a notification pop-up will appear. Since I have Adblock software enabled, clicking OK will not send me directly to my inbox or open a new page as it would normally. In other words the software is actively blocking the re-direct script. Perfect. But if I go to some random website, especially ones that stream out of market Sports telecasts,  it turns into a pop-up festival.
    (2) Not even blacklisting certain URLs in AdBlock or trying to wildcard a URL in the blacklist stops them. Is there another method or  tool you recommend?
    (3) What is MacKeeper and why does 2 out of every 5 pop-up ads ask me to try MacKeeper. I swear, I'm surprised someone hasn't tired DDoS attack their website out of frustration from the way they invade your web experience.
Sidenote: Thank you creating AdWareMedic. I installed it this morning and ran a scan. Fortunately the report was clean, but I'll be adding this to my monthly system health check and clean-up.
