Hello alpine67,
If you can't click through and quit Office 2011 for Mac normally, try force quitting it.
OS X: How to quit an unresponsive application using Force Quit
Using the Force Quit feature of OS X makes an application close, even when it is not responsive.
Important: Normally you should not need to force quit an app to close it. When an app is forced to quit, any unsaved changes to open documents are not saved, so try these methods to normally close the app first:
Choose Quit from the app menu. For example, in Safari, choose Safari > Quit Safari.
Choose Quit by right-clicking or control-clicking on an app's icon in the Dock.
If your app does not close using the steps above, use any of these steps to force the app to quit:
Switch to another app, such as the Finder, then choose Force Quit from the Apple menu. Select the unresponsive app in the Force Quit window, and click Force Quit.
Press Command-Option-Esc, then select the unresponsive app from the Force Quit window that appears, and click Force Quit.
Hold down the Control and Option keys on your keyboard, and click the icon of the unresponsive app in the Dock. Select Force Quit from the menu that appears.
Open Activity Monitor from the Utilities folder or the Spotlight menu. Select the unresponsive app in the Activity monitor window. Choose Quit Process from the View menu, or click the Force Quit button in the toolbar of the Activity Monitor window.
If you cannot switch from the unresponsive app, press Command-Option-Shift-Esc for three seconds to force it to quit. This key combination tells OS X to force quit the frontmost app.

(Mountain Lion) suddenly the screen turns black, and I have to use the on/off switch to turn it on. And, the screen turns to zoom, and the only way to return to normal is to close the window and start all over again?

Does the screen go black while you are using the machine? ...or after it has sat idle for a bit?
If it happens while you're using the machine, check to see if a hot corner has been set for sleep. You can do that here: System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver > Screen Saver and click the button labelled "Hot Corners..." in the lower right.
If it happens after a bit of idle time, that's normal sleep behavior. The delay can be adjusyed here: System Preferences > Energy Saver.
In either case, pressing any key on the keyboard should bring it out of sleep.
    Re zooming -
If this happens while in Safari, and you are using an Apple Magic Mouse, a default setting applicable to it is that a soft double-tap on the mouse will zoom the Safari window. A second double-tap will bring it back.
If it is the entire screen that is zooming, Control plus scroll gesture on the mouse will zoom the whole screen. Repeat with the opposite scroll gesture to bring it back.

I just bought a new IMAC and I want to install the Office Mac 2011, but it doesn´t have a CD unit. How can I do it?

Howard has the easiest answer. Or at least, cheapest, since you don't need to purchase an external CD/DVD drive.
The "demo" software from Microsoft's site is exactly the same as what's on the DVD. Install that and activate it with the key in your software box.
    From Microsoft's site:
How do I install Office for Mac 2011 if my Mac doesn't have a DVD drive?
There are two options for installing Office for Mac if your Mac doesn't have a DVD drive.
Option 1: Convert your Office for Mac 2011 trial. To convert a trial version, you must have a valid product key. The product key will convert your trial into a fully licensed version of Office for Mac.
    1. Locate the 25-character product key in your product package or confirmation email.
    2. Open any Office for Mac application, like Word, PowerPoint, or Excel.
    3. On the first screen of the Microsoft Office Setup Assistant, click Enter your Product Key.
    4. Enter your product key and complete the installation instructions.
Option 2: If you have not previously installed the trial version, you can download Office for Mac from the Office for Mac website. To download, install, and activate the software you must have a valid Office 2011 product key.
    1. Locate your 25-character product key found in your product package or confirmation email.
    2. Go to www.officeformac.com/download
    3. Click Get Started to start the download process.
    4. When prompted, enter your 25-character product key and select your product language.
    5. When prompted, sign in with your Windows Live ID or sign up and create a new Windows Live ID account.
    6. After you enter your Windows Live ID, you will see a link to download the software. (You will also receive a confirmation email with a link to your My Account page if you prefer to wait and download your software at a later time.)
    7. Click Download Now to start the download.
    8. Save the file to your desktop. Do not change the file name.
    9. When the download is complete, double-click the .dmg file icon on your desktop. This opens the Installer application in Mac OS X.
    10. Follow the instructions in the installer screens to complete your installation.

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Download and install the OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 Combo Update.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
    Alternatively, see:

    Every time Firefox opened
    == I UPGRADED TO 3.6

I have the same problem and tested it in Safe Mode, and did the disable the add-ons thing. Everything went OK, even up to the last add-on. There wasn't a hint of the problem anymore, so I went back to regular use of FF (3.6.12) again. WELL, THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN!!! I agree with the person who said that your supposed troubleshooting is B.S. You blame the user instead of saying something useful like "OK, we heard you (and over two dozen others) and we know it's not your doing, and it's OUR PROBLEM, and we're going to look into it and figure out how to fix it, AND we'll get back to you when we do and tell you how to fix it too." THAT's the kind of answer we FF users want to hear, not some claptrap about how WE the users didn't try hard enough to fix it on our own!

Using 2 displays, connected via HDMI and thunderbolt

    BUMP.
I actually showed this to Apple geniuses when I took my computer to the apple store, and it's still here. In console it says:
    kernel[0]: Previous Shutdown Cause: -128
I don't know if that's related or not, but maybe helps?

I downloaded the latest iTunes software update and it properly installed.  But,  I cannot close the update window showing it was completed and the blue completion bar is full but cannot cancel or close it either.  Any ideas on how to clear that out and close the window.  Tried to quit on both the big window and the software update title in the menu bar.  No luck.

Tried that by shutting down via the power button only as the normal shutdown was nixed by the open window issue.  It did not help.  Found a very similar question in the discussions and it recommended "Force Quit".  That worked and the update works normal and the window is gone.  Thanks!

It doesn't sound like you are doing anything incorrectly from what I can see. Have you tried restarting the iPad and then see if you can backup?
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

I have upgraded my iPhone 4S to iOS 5.1 and now cannot access the camera from a locked screen.  Anyone have any suggestions?

From the lock screen, to access the camera you touch the camera icon and slide in an upward motion. It no longer takes a tap to get it to open.

  • I cannot close the icloud backup message and I cannot even shut down the iPad to use any of the apps

I cannot close the icloud backup message and I cannot even shut down the iPad to use any of the apps. Any tips or help would be appreciated

First thing to try is to reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider should one appear until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.

Backup in case your disk is failing.
Start up in Safe Mode;  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14204?viewlocale=en_US
If it boots reliably in Safe Mode then it is probably a software issue.
    Reset PRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
Boot in Recovery Mode.  (Hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys as your computer restarts.)  Run Disk Utility.  Click on the upper left system disk icon.  Does S.M.A.R.T. report “Verified”?  If not the disk is failing and will need to be replaced.  Click on the icon underneath and indented to the right, usually called “Macintosh HD”.  Repair Disk.  It should finish normally with a green OK message.  If it does not try to repair it again.
If it will not finish with the green OK message then use Disk Utility to erase the drive and then reinstall OS X.  (Be sure you have a backup before erasing the disk.  Post back if you need instructions on how to do that.)
If it repaired all errors and is still not booting normally, reinstall OS X.
If it is still sick after all these steps then the disk probably needs to be replaced.  You can do that inexpensively and fairly easily yourself or take it to an Apple store for them to do it for you at a higher cost.  If it is still under warranty or AppleCare have Apple do it for you for free.  Post back if you need instructions on replacing the disk.  You may want to have Apple check the health of the system and disk before replacing it yourself.

  • Cannot find the thread I started

I cannot import files from my CF card (Canon 5D MarkII) to lightroom 5.3.  They will import to Macintosh HD.  Therefore there is enough room.  Cannot read the files to import them.  I don't know what folders I was putting them in when I first started importing them.  I have about 1,000 images in lightroom now.  I was importing them by date.  Did that put them into a file?  I need to stop with this many questions, I think.

According to the software used here at Adobe to run this forum, this is your first post. So we can't find the thread you started either ... but ... this speaks to an issue about organization ... if you can't find your threads here in the forums, I'm not surprised you can't find your photos either, and neither state of affairs is good. Perhaps you might want to commit to being more organized about photography and forums and the like. Just a thought.
If you are getting a message from Lightroom about "cannot read the files to import them", or something like that (in the future you might want to state the exact error message, word for word, verbatim, exactly as it appears on your screen, without alteration — just so we don't have to guess what the error message really said), I will guess that you did not have WRITE permission to the destination folder when ytou tried to import them. But that's a guess. It would really help to know the exact, verbatim, word-for-word error message.
I don't know what folders I was putting them in when I first started importing them.
Lightroom knows where the photos are. That is one of the reasons we use Lightroom, because it remembers these things better than humans can. I suggest you look for them in Lightroom, and the folder that contains the photos will be available to you by looking in the Metadata Panel on the right, with the dropdown set to "Default", next to "Folder".
I have about 1,000 images in lightroom now.  I was importing them by date.  Did that put them into a file?
Lightroom does not store your photos, your photos are stored on your hard disk somewhere, in the location you put them, or in the location you told Lightroom to put them. So, "Did that put them into a file?" — the answer is  NO.

  • Re: i can't start up indesign cc each time it says it has to close the program on start-up. I have uninstalled and reinstalled and have rebooted my machine seeveral times and it still doesn't work.

How do you create another user account?
I am having a similar problem - have deleted preferences which did not  solve - this is since I  installed the latest update - it is very slow - and  cannot close - says background task running  - but when I open background task  window - shows nothing - only way to close is to use Windows task manager and end program
mouse movements are delayed - it takes forever to do anything
    Windows 7 Pro
    Intel CPU - 2.93 Ghz
    Ram - 8 Gb
    AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series

My problem is really weird - ID CC 2014 with the latest update  can become very slow - at first it was only when I had other applications going [especially Photoshop] - but  for the last week it has  been every time I try to use it - even with no other app running.
Mouse movements are delayed, any selection takes forever to take effect. When closing - I sometimes get message saying background task is running [but not every time]
new user account didn't help, deleting preferences neither .
I had several ID files open -closed those - crashed ID - rebooted - opened  totally different files - same problem.
However - I have just deleted the file Recovery Data  in the users/user name/appdata/local/adobe/indesign/version 10.0/en_US/Caches/InDesign REcovery- and that seems to have temporarily fixed the issue as ID is behaving normally now.  [I guess that 's the same as  creating another user account]
