Cannot communicate with scanner. Cable may be disconnected or scanner may be turned off...I

I have a MF6590 mutifunction printer.  It had been working fine until last week when I got the error message "Cannot communicate with scanner.." I tried uninstall and reinstall te driver, I tried switching to a different USB port, reboot my PC, turned on/off the printer.. hopped on one foot...nothing worked.  Anyone has any suggestion?

Hi bmaskell.
I will be glad to assist you.
Since the issue began after updating the Windows 7 operating system, I recommend that you uninstall and reinstall the Canon drivers.  Please follow the instructions below:
1.  Unplug the USB cable from the printer.
***Please leave the USB cable disconnected until you have uninstalled and completely reinstalled the drivers.  Connecting the printer before going through the "Setup Wizard" may cause the Windows operating system to install a generic driver for the printer.***
 2.  Select [Start] and [All Programs].
 3.  Select the [Canon] folder.
 4.  Select [MF4100 Series] and then uninstall.  Repeat the steps for the [MF Toolbox].
5.  Restart you computer.
Leaving the USB cable disconnected, please download the driver from the Canon website using the following link: http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer
1. The site will automatically detect your operating system.
2.  Next, select [Drivers] and the file [Windows 64bit] imageCLASS MF4150 MFDrivers (UFR II / FAX / ScanGear).
3.  Click "I Agree - Begin Download".
4.  Save the file to your computer.  Once the download is complete, click "Run".
5.  Click "I Decline - Go Back" on the Canon site and select [Software] and the file [Windows 32bit & 64bit] Tool Box Ver.4.9.1.1.mf16.
6.  Save the file to your computer.  Once the download is complete, click "Run".
7.  Close the Canon window and go to the location on the computer where the files are saved, usually [Downloads].
8.  You will see two icons with the name MF4150_MFDrivers_W64_us_EN_2.exe.  Double click on the yellow folder icon.  In the folder you will see two files with the name "Setup".  Double click on the "Setup" that has the type [Application].
9.  The "MF Drivers Setup Wizard" will open.  Please proceed through the setup and restart the computer.
10.  After the computer restarts, please connect the USB cable to the computer and allow the computer to finish the installation process.  Once the printer is listed in [Devices and Printers], right-click on the icon and select it as the default printer.  Please open a document on the computer and print it out.
Please follow steps 7 and 8 to install the Canon MF Toolbox 4.9 software.  Once the software is installed, please follow the steps below to complete a scan:
1.  Press the [SCAN] button on the control panel of the printer and place a document in the feeder.
2.  On the computer, open the MF Toolbox program.
3.  Select the [PDF] scan function.
4.  Click the green [Start] button in the PDF window.  The scan should begin.
I hope this information is helpful to you.  Should you need further assistance, please contact us at 1-800-OK-CANON (1-800-652-2666).

I click 'ok' then i have the message Scan failed.
Found a post about the same problem with the MP470 model.
Did what is told in this post (installation of new scanner driver from the Canon site) But always the same problem. Who could help ??
    Thanks

    Hi Pahu
Many thanks for your quick and relevant answer.
Are your sure I have to look in the software section of the profiler ?? I don't find anything about scanner or printer in this section. I see the MP Navigator, which is the soft I use for scanning.
In the hardware section, I only see an entry for the printer and the driver is the 5.8.3 version.
Although the driver I installed yesterday stands in a file named 'mp460osxsd12131ej7.dmg' (thus for me should be the 12.13.1 version)
Oops I see now that my post is not in the correct forum, since my MacBook is in 10.5.8, not in 10.6

  • 10.6.8 "Cannot communicate with scanner" after shutdown

With a Mac Pro 5,1 and a Macbook Pro 4,1 both on Snow Leopard 10.6.8 I have long been using a firewire-connected Canon 9950f on the Mac Pro and a Bonjour Wifi Brother MG 6100 with no problems. I went on vacation and shut down the power to everything. After rebooting everything, I cannot connect with either machine to either scanner. I get the message approximately "Cannot communicate with scanner. Check cable....". The scanners are shown in System Preferences->Print and Fax, but even there when I select either scanner on the Mac Pro and click "Open scanner ..." I get a window with "No scanner selected". I have tried rebooting with both scanner powered up, and various other things I don't remember, but after a morning of frustration I deleted both scanners from "System Preferences". Now I can't find a way to add the two scanners back into the list, let alone use them!

Thanks for the suggestions. I have no problems removing and re-adding the all-in-one printer that includes a scanner if I set it as an IP printer using its IP address (though it ought to be discoverable by Bonjour and isn't), but I cannot see its scanner. The scanner shows up in /Library/Printers/Canon/IJScanner, but not as as a scanner in the System Prferences panel. Nor can I figure out how to tell the system to see the flatbed scanner, which is connected by firewire and has no associated printer.
I used Time Machine to look back at a state from February to see if I could find anything missung from /Library/Printers or Extensions in /Library and /System/Library, but saw no difference.
I have been trying these things on the Mac Pro, leaving the Macbook Pro alone. It still sees the scanners in theSystem Preferences>Printers pane, but if I select either one and then click "Open scanner..." I get a window that just says "No scanner selected".
The weird thing is that everything was working well before the several-day shutdown, and has worked after previous short shutdowns and even through one PRAM reset

  • Canoscan 88ooF error report, "Cannot communicate with scanner."

When I try and use my scanner I get the error report,"Cannot communicate with scanner, check that it is plugged in and truned on." When I go to Windows device manager I can see it and when I click on the properties buttonn it says that the device is working properly. I have downloaded the latest driver software etc., and I have uninstalled everything and re installed again but I still get the same error report.
I am using Windows 7, 64 bit version.
Above is the error message I get.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

After two days of fruitless effort I have found my own solution. I have downloaded and installed VueScan  x64 and it works a treat. I think the problem I have been having is due to the fact that the scanner driver is 64 bit and the programs that install are 32 bit and although scanner driver is working perfectly well the 2 bit probrams can't see it.

  • MG3250 Printer throws up error message - Scangear cannot communicate with scanner for these reasons

    Hi
I have an MG 3250 printer running off an HP Pavilion Laptop using Windows 8.1. Every time I try to scan  I get an error message that 'cannot  communicate with scanner for these reasons...........etc'. The only way I can get the printer / scanner to work is by going through the Control Panel / Hardware & Printers route. This seems terribly slow and time consuming. What is wrong and what needs to be done to correct the problem?
    Thanks

I have the exact same problem as you with my new Canon LiDE 120. The errors I get are: 2, 156, 182, 55 and sometimes 77 when using it on my Windows 8.1 (64 Bit) desktop PC. I have tried installing and uninstalling the drivers multiple times, used different ports and still nothing. It does however work properly on a Windows 7 device.
My PC's specification is as follows:
Windows 8.1 (64 Bit) - With latest updates
    Avast Premier
    Malwarebytes
    ASUS z87 Pro
    Intel 4770k
    ASUS GTX 670 (4GB)
    8GB 1600MHz Kingston RAM
    Things I have done
Tried different ports (USB 2.0 and 3.0)
Installed all software & driver from CD
Installed all software & driver from Canon Website
Installed only the latest driver from Canon Website (April 2015)
Tried to use Windows Fax & Scan, Scan, IJ Scan Utility, Scangear and Vuescan.
    What happens
The physical buttons on the device are unresponsive
The computer says it is warming up, but nothing happens
It starts to scan for a few seconds and then comes to an abrupt end - this can happen at 10% of the scan or even at 91%.
Surely the problem cannot be with Windows 8.1 since the device was only released last year. What could be the issue? I called their support line and was advised to clear the drivers of previous scanners used by my system, I did this and there still is no change. Could somebody please help me!

  • Tecra P11 cannot communicate with scanner

I replaced my old Tecra A3 with a P11 6months ago. For nearly all this time it has been a lottery if the P11 would communicate with the scanner function (printing was fine) of my Canon MP170 printer/scanner. The only reliable way I had was to system restore back to the purchase date -> do the scanning -> undo system restore. What a pain!
That printer was showing it's age so I've bought a new Epson. Same problem, the computer can talk with it to print but can't communicate to scan. I've changed USB cables and ports, done everything Epson has suggested but to no avail. Epson's last advice to me was 'it must be a computer issue'.
Anyone else had a similar experience? More importantly, did you solve the problem? I've no desire to go back to the system restore merrygoround.

    Hello
It is really strange and the whole story is illogic for me.
How it can work with factory settings but later not? What happen meanwhile?
Last month I bought big HP device with printing, scanning and coping function. I use it with my Tecra A11. The whole configuration was finished in 10 minutes. Ive tested functionality with USB cable and also using WLAN connection. No problem at all.
In my opinion most important thing is preinstalled software that you get from the manufacturer.
If Epson think it must be computer have you asked what it can be. I mean they should have enough experience with own product and they have tested software that they offer.
Unfortunately I cannot help you with this but I will follow this thread to see what the problem was.
If you will be able to find a solution please let us know.
    Good luck.

  • Cannot communicate with scanner

I have just purchased a new HP Envy k250na notebook and I am having major problems trying to connect to my HP Envy 120 ll in one printer, I can connect and print wirelessly without any problems but when trying to scan from my notebook I get a message stating "scanner communication cannot be established" etc.
I have performed all the reconnection procedures, ie power off, disconnect power lead to printer then restart etc but without any luck, I have even spent nearly 2 hours on the "chat" service where a technician took control over my laptop and after over an hour trying this and that said that there "could be a problem with my notebooks operating system and that I should do a full reset",
5 hours later, having done a full reset still no improvement,
Prior to purchasing my HP Notebook I had a Samsung notebook running Windows 8.1 64bit, and never had any communication problems whatsoever, scanning and printing easily.
I have tried downloading and installing hardware and software updates but this does not help.
When going into HP Print and Scan Doctor after running the tests I am told that under "Driver Check"  "The scan driver is unable to communicate with the product" I follow all the instructions but still no better, when trying to download the updates using HP Device Updater I get the message "The HP Device Upgrade cannot continue".
I would have thought that trying to connect a HP notebook to a HP printer would be straight forward unless there is a major problem with my notebook.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    Stephan.

    Hi @stpauli,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I am sorry to hear that you are having trouble connecting your HP Envy 120 Scanner to your Windows 8.1 Notebook. But, I am happy to help!
To verify the printer's hardware is functioning properly, are you able to make copies with your printer?
By any chance, do you have another computer that you can try installing the printer on? Just so we can make sure if the issue is with the computer, or the printer.
In the meantime, I can suggest to try and go through this guide, HP ENVY 120 e-All-in-One Printer Series - A 'Computer Not Found' or 'Connection Error' Message Displ....

  • Itunes cannot communicate with my iphone

I installed an update and then I tried to restore and i received a message that my iphone (4s) cannot communicate with itunes. (on mac) Any suggestions?

    Hello there kellynocca,
Given what you are describing I recommend starting here with the iOS: Troubleshooting USB connection article: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1286.
Once you determine that your computer has a USB 2.0 connection, use the following steps to troubleshoot the connection between the device and the computer. Test after each step:
Update to the latest version of iTunes.
Plug the device directly into a high-power USB 2.0 port on the computer. If possible, use a USB port on the back of the computer.Avoid plugging the device into a keyboard, display, or standalone hub. The USB ports on these accessories may be low-power or only offer USB 1.x connections.
If you are using an accessory, remove the device from the dock and connect it to the computer using only the Apple USB to Dock Connector cable. If you have access to additional Apple USB to Dock Connector cables, try testing with another if the first one doesn't work.
Restart your computer and device. To restart your device:Hold the power button until "slide to power off" appears. Slide to power off your device. When it is off, press the Sleep/Wake button to turn it back on.
Disconnect all USB devices from your computer, except for your keyboard and mouse. Then reconnect the iOS device. If the issue is resolved, reconnect other USB devices, testing after each connection.
Another article describes what to do if you are using Windows and see an unknown error containing "0xE" when connecting your device.
IF that does not get your device to communicate with iTunes correctly I recommend restarting both the computer and the iPhone.
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting

As a last resort I would recommend backing up to iCloud, and restoring the device.

  • Cannot communicate with system processes error

    Hello,
It seems after S159 our IDS's started refusing any config updates/remote logins and returning "cannot communicate with system processes" shortly after login and then disconnecting the session. I see there are some patches available on TAC.
I can't tell if the IDS has any of these patches or not. It reports 4.1-4 Should the IDS report a version with a letter of the patch if it has any installed. Also, does this problem sound like the out of memory bug I have seen mentioned before? The memory usage on the sensors reports 98%
    Any help is appreciated!

The only indication of a patched sensor is the status list of components, like Analysis Engine. Instead of "(Release)" it will have the patch version.
Yes, this could be the out of memory issue that can occur during a sigupdate.
NOTE: the memory usage portion of show version in 4.x is incorrect because it does not take into account the OS cached memory that is available for use. It may show that most of the memory is used when actually there is plenty available.
