Cannot configure Airport Express

I've set up my Airport Express as a wireless client, the computer recognizes it (it shows up on Airport Utility), but I cannot configure it...everytime I try it says an error occured when trying to communicate, and that's it. All I want to do is play music wirelessly, but I can't select wireless speakers from iTunes...I've already tried a hard and factory reset, no dice...any idea out there?

Solved my own problem, I guess. Updating the Airport Express Firmware to version 6.3 solved the problem: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airportexpressfirmwareupdate63formacosx.h tml
The unfortunate thing is that there was nothing via Airport Utility or Apple Software Update that told me it was necessary to do so. The only reason I discovered this as the problem was trying to connect to the Airport Express using Rogue Amoeba's Airfoil. It diagnosed the problem immediately and sent me to the proper URL to download the firmware update...

  • Cannot configure Airport Express via ethernet cable

I am trying to configure my new Airport Express, in order to stream music to it.
I have a wireless switch/router (Linksys), but DHCP is disabled.
My mac has no wireless card, it is connected via cable, on 100Mbps port.
A friend advised me to connect the AE directly via Ethernet cable, in order to first configure it.
I connected the AE to the router, and the Mac (in the Airport Setup wizard) tells me that "No airport card is installed" (correct). I then click on "Continue", and I can choose between "Configure a new Airport station" and "Modify...".
If I select "Configure...". I get the following message (I am translating from french): The Wizard detected a new Airport Express called "Base Station 5f6281". Good!
But If I click "Continue", it will report "An orror occured when contacting the selected Airport station".
    What should I do?
If, instead of selecting "Configure..", I try to "Modify an existing configuration", I have the same when I then click on "identify". What is the trick?
    Thanks for your help

Follow the instructions posted here by David Lovell (which work equally well for Macs and PCs):
David Lovell, "Airtunes for XP with a Wired/Wireless network" #1, 09:05pm Jan 8, 2005 CDT
    Notes:
    1. You MUST re-enable DHCP on your router. If you don't, the Airport Express won't be able to get an IP address. If your Airport Express doesn't get an IP address, your Mac won't be able to communicate with it.
    2. When configuring via an ethernet connection, you must use the Airport Admin Utility (David's article tells you this as well). The Airport Setup Assistant can only be used if you are going to do the configuration wirelessly from an Airport card equipped Mac.

    Hello!
I´m sorry it took so long to reply, but I´m new to these blogs; and I´ve been travelling a lot... Anyway, I was able to configure Airport Express, but I was told I could use it to expand my wireless network inside my house; which I found it´s not possible.
So, I´m returning my Airport Express to the store tomorrow and try to figure out a way to extend my wireless in any other way.
Any sugestion? Big houses are a problem...

  • Cannot connect airport express to ipad I keep receiving the message: "an unexpected error occurred" when I try to connect my Ipad to my airport express.  Does anyone have a solution?

cannot connect airport express to ipad
I keep receiving the message: "an unexpected error occurred" when I try to connect my Ipad to my airport express.  Does anyone have a solution?

I could not "see" my Express via my wireless router or via the Airport Utility until I reset it to Factory Settings by unplugging it then holding in the tiny reset button while plugging it back in, waiting for the flashing yellow LED signal before letting go.
Then I set it up to DHCP - "connect to wireless network" and DOWNGRADED the firmware to 7.3.x
I would tell you the exact Firmware but I can no longer "see" the Airport express............ AGAIN or still.....
BUT at least I am listening to music streaming from my MacBook Pro... Hmmm.
I log back into the router (Linksys WRT110) and it no longer shows the Airport Express as a DHCP client AND the Airport utility can no longer "find" any Airport Devices..
So if I don't move, or there are no cosmic events, or maybe my KARMA is effecting the device or my "VIBES" are good, but I'm not sure if will continue to work.. Sure would like to use this little device from hel*.
Since I have had this Airport Express I have spent many hours trying to get it to work.
It works just long enough to fool me and then takes a dump...
    Maybe this time?
    5 Minute later...
Music was playing. I went into iTunes and switched from Airtunes to Computer speakers. When I tried to switch it back GUESS WHAT?
[An unknown error (-15006) occurred while trying to connect to remote speaker "Airtunes"]
Wonderful Green LED though. Totally useless piece of equipment AFAIK.

  • Cannot connect Airport express wireless

Hello, cannot connect airport express wireless to linksys router.  Connected now with ethernet  cable but cannot figure wireless connection. My laptop cannot find the express while preforming setup scan, yet I'm connected to it.  I can connect with my iphone but not wirelessly. Any suggestions?

....I was then told over the phone that airport express will not connect to third party routers.
    This is NOT correct.
The AirPort Express will connect to a wireless network if you know the following:
    1) The name of the wireless network
    2) The exact setting for wireless security that the network is using
    3) The wireless network password
Most users know 1) and 3), but very few know the exact type of wireless security settings that their wireless router is using. The Express will not connect to the wireless network unless it receives all of the information listed above.
So...we will assume that you know the name of the wireless network and the password for the network.
Do you know the exact type of wireless security setting that your wireless router is using?  If not, the Express will not connect.
You may need to check the setup of your wireless router....or if the router was supplied to you by an Internet Service Provider, they may be able to tell you what type of wireless security setting is being used.
Post back when you have this info and we will proceed. There are still no guarantees that the Express will connect....but at least there may be a chance.

  • Cannot re-configure Airport Express

I have a Time Capsule as my base station and at one point I had successfully extended it with an Airport Express.  I had set a password for the wireless network but had lost it.  My grandson had a new computer he wanted to add to the wireless network and so I attempted to reset the password on the time capsule.  The problem is that after I did this I could no longer see the Airport Express in the AirPort Utility so that I could reset the password there as well.
Everything that I have tried has failed to allow me to access the AirPort Express via the AirPort Utility.  I've done a hard-reset and a hard-reset to restore factory default settings.  Nothing works.  HELP!

I had the same problem.  If rescanning doesn’t bring it up then quit Airport Utility, reboot the computer, open the Utility and rescan.  I had several attempts before I could see it.
I use an 802.11n Airport Extreme as base, extending with the Express.  Although I can see it in the Utility (green status) it does not extend the network any longer.  My Apple TV shows full signal bars, and then after a minute it drops off to one bar and can no longer see the network.  Very disappointed in the reliability of Apple's wireless appliances.  Made in China means poor and inconsistent manufacturing, lack of process controls, high production failure rates (< Sis Sigma), resulting in poor quality.  Apple, bring back your manufacturing to the US and reinstate quality into your products!

  • Cannot see Airport Express as an Audio Output option!

    Hello All,
    Very frustruating.
I bought an AirPort Express hoping to use it as a Audio output device for movies/spotify etc.
Plugged it all in to my reciever (using optical cable) configured it to my TC network.
Opened itunes and the Airplay function is working perfectly. Music is streaming as expected.
However i cannot see the AE in the audio output options (when i "option+click" the speaker icon).
Tearing my hair out as this was the primary reason for purchasing the AE!
any help would be greatly apprecaited.
    Tim

Trying to play movies through VLC and stream the Audio component to my AirPort express. Similary use Spotify on my computer and stream the audio component.
I thought i would be able to enable my laptop (Macbook Air) to use the Airport Express as its 'speakers' through selecting it as the output source in System preferences.
However it does not show up in the system preferences at all, what has me stumped is the Airport Express is 100% functional through itunes as well as some third party applications (Airfoil).
Im very confused as other users (from extensive google searching) appear to be able to atleast see the AirPort Express as an output device.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

  • ITunes cannot see Airport Express / Windows XP

I have an interesting problem that I cannot figure out.
I am only using the Airport Express to stream music to my stereo. Therefore the Airport Express is in client mode, connected to my home network over a wireless connection (predominantly D-link hardware), WEP is enabled and working fine, and all hardware has the latest firmware. Finally, all hardware has functioning internet connections.
My Apple Powerbook with its Airport card can connect to my Airport Express (in client mode) without difficulty. The Aiport configuration programs can "see" the Airport Express and iTunes finds the device fine. The Powerbook works the way it should, and I can stream music the way I want.
However, the problem is that my IBM notebook cannot see the Airport Express through any of the configuration utilities, and iTunes on the notebook cannot find the Airport Express. I have tried disabling all firewall and antivirus software. iTunes is configured to look for remote speakers with Airtunes. No dice on streaming music from the IBM Notebook to the Airport express.
What is strange is that on the IBM notebook, I can open the Airport Admin Utility and choose "other." Then I put in the IP address for my Aiport Express 192.168.0.103, and I can communicate and configure the Aiport Express.
So the problem is iTunes cannot find the Airport Express on my IBM laptop. I have tried everything that I know of to solve the problem. I can communicate with the Airport Express on the IBM by using the "other" command in the Admin Utility. Somehow there is a flag or something that is not coming up automatically to let the notebook know that an Airport Express is in the network.
    Suggestions?

Have you tried re-installing iTunes as the problem may lie with that and not the network setup itself.

  • Cannot configure AP Express

On an iMac running OS 10.7.5, Airport Utility 6.1 refuses to configure my Express:
This version of AirPort Utility doesn't support this base station. Use AirPort Utility 5.6 to configure or manage this base station. AirPort Utility 5.6 is available at AirPort Service and Support.
-- but 5.6 cannot be loaded on my computer.
    What to do?

AirPort Utility 5.6 can be installed on your Mac running the 10.7.5 operating system.
If you check carefully, you will likely find that you have been trying to install AirPort Utility 5.6.1, which will only run on Snow Leopard Macs, not Lion.
Give this version of AirPort Utility 5.6 for Lion a try...and please report on your results:

  • Configuring Airport Express and Modem/Router

I have a Siemens SX763 ADSL Modem/Router which I wish to use a simply an ADSL modem connected to my Airport Express which will act as wireless network.
I have switched off wireless on the SX763 and also DHCP server, which I expect the AX will act as. However I cannot get an internet connection from modem to AX. The usual connection is PPPoA with username/pwd - other options are PPPoE and Bridging(MER). My suspicion is that I should select bridging here and enter my ISP username/pwd via the AX.
Can anybody confirm my thinking or perhaps offer alternative suggestions?
    Cheers
    Darryn

    Darryn, welcome to the discussions!
You have a couple of options here:
I assume that the Express be connected to your Siemens with an ethernet cable, correct?
If you normally use the Siemens in your system, you could turn off the wireless for it and then setup the AirPort Express up as a bridge in your network. The Express would be set to "Create a Wireless Network" The Siemens would then furnish the DHCP and NAT services in this setup.
Alternately, if you wanted to the Express to provide PPPoE, DHCP and NAT services, you would need to set the modem up as a simple bridge. (Here, I assume that there is a setup page for the modem that would allow this.) The Express would be set to Connect with PPPoE and you would need to enter your user name and password during the setup for the Express. The Express would also be set to "Create a Wireless Network" in this configuration.
Either of these configurations should work fine. It's basically your choice of which device you want to handle the log on, DHCP and NAT services.

  • To configure Airport Express as an extender to Airport Extreme ?

    - I have an Airport Extreme , its been there for 2 years
    - I forgot the admin password to login to the airport extreme, but I remember
the wireless password. I cannot rest it as I cannot loose the configuration.
    - Now yesterday I brought a new Airport Express to make this as an wireless
extender to the current Airport Extreme wireless what I already have.
    Question:
    ========
    1) While configuring this new Airport Express as an extender to my current wireless setup (Airport Extreme), does it need the ADMIN password of the airport extreme anywhere ?
    2) Will there be any difference in the wireless signal & strength in the below
    setup ?
Airport Extreme <== connected through CAT6 network cable ==> Airport Express
    Versus
Airport Extreme <== connected wireless ==> Airport Express

Welcome to the discussion area, johnpau2009!
I have an Airport Extreme , its been there for 2 years
Just to confirm which version you have, is your AirPort Extreme (AEBS) square shaped with rounded corners, or is it round and shaped like a flying saucer?
I forgot the admin password to login to the airport extreme
Push the reset button on the back of the AEBS for 1 second and give it 20-25 seconds to restart. You now have about 4 minutes to make changes. If you are asked for the admin or device password, try "public" (without the quotation marks)
Click the Base Station tab below the row of icons to check then name of your AEBS and type in a new admin or device password. (Might be a good idea to write this down).
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons and look for an option with a check box to "Allow this network to be extended". Enter a check mark here.
Write down the name of the wireless network you have established and the exact setting that you see for Wireless Security because you will need that information to configure the AirPort Express (AX) to provide additional wireless coverage
Click Update at the lower right to save your changes and the AEBS will restart in 25-30 seconds and you should have a green light.
Post back on your progress at this point.
    2) Will there be any difference in the wireless signal & strength in the below
    setup ?
Connecting devices using ethernet cable connections is always the better way to go because this provides much better bandwidth (speed) for the wireless network and it allows you to place the AirPort Express in the location where it's really needed.
Using wireless only to extend can work well if you have close to a line of sight relationship between the AEBS and AX. There's nothing wrong with trying this first to see if it will provide the performance you want if you're not anxious to pull ethernet cable through the house.

  • HT4262 How to configure Airport Express (first generation) from Mountain Lion 10.8?

In OS X 10.8 / Mountain Lion, when I open the Airport  Utility (version 6.1) and attempt to configure my first generation Airport Express (b/g), the Airport Utility displays the error "This version of Airport Express cannot be configured with this version of Airport Utility.  Download Airport Utility version 5.6."  However, I cannot locate a download location for Airport Utility 5.6 which works on Mountain Lion (there is a version which works on Leopard and Snow Leopard).
Does this mean I can no longer configure my access point?
Or am I just overlooking the download location for Airport Utility 5.6 for Mountain Lion / 10.8?
    Thanks!
    /eh

See this thread for more info:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/19299375#19299375
The pertinent info is as follows:
The 2nd Generation Express was introduced mid-June this year, so if you purchased your Express before that time, you either have a 1st Generation Express, or an even older model that did not use the "Generation" nomenclature.
Please check the label on the side of the Express and look for the Model No.
If you have the "old" version, you will see Model No A1084 or A1088.
If you have the 1st Generation Express, the Model No will be A1264.
If you do have the older version of the Express, unfortunately Apple will not allow you to install AirPort Utility 5.6 on your Mountain Lion machine. In other words, the "older" versions of the Express are no longer supported in Mountain Lion.
There are some "unofficial" or "unsupported" ways to do this....with no guarantees....so I am not sure whether you want to contact Apple Support or an Apple Store to see if Apple plans to introduce AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mountain Lion, or whether you want to try an unsupported procedure to see if it might work.

  • Cannot Connect Airport Express to Airport Extreme Base Station

I have just purchased a new Airport Extreme Base station and have it configured and running properly.
I would like to use my Airport Express to play Air Tunes and have tried to join my Airport Express's network. I have not managed to get this to work.
I have tried to configure the Airport Express manually and in Assist Me mode but every time it reboots to reconfigure the unit, it continues to flash amber. I have done numerous hard resets and followed the methods discussed in other posts but cannot get the unit to connect.
I am running the latest firmware on both units.
Has anyone solved this problem? If so, please help!

    Shallers...you are not alone.
I spend several hours this past weekend trying to get a brand new Express to work with a brand new Extreme station using all Apple computers.
Still no luck, after a gazillion permutations.
I really like the Extreme, it works very well, even with non-Apple devices.
The Express is going back....gawd awful thing from the Darkness.
