Cannot configure home sync

I have a couple of portable machines on which users with mobile accounts are installed. On some of the machines I see that I cannot configure home sync. The button in the system preferences:Accounts is dimmed all the time.
TIA,
Eckart

Here's what I did.
In workgroup manager you configure the Mobility Preferences for the particular User. Then you must also create a computer list for the portable machines which will be using PHD and set their mobility preferences to allow PHD syncing and check "Merge with user's settings".
That's what I did and it works. Hopefully that's the way it is supposed to be done.

  • Cannot configure firefox sync and do not have add a device option

I am very frustrated. I have spent a lot of time over the past two days trying to figure out how to ocnfigure Firefox sync. I am specifically trying to sync my iphone to my account. I have downloaded two apps from the Apple App store, both of which are designed to allow me to do so. When I open both of these apps they provide me with a pass code that is broken up into three sections each containing 4 letter and or number combinations, just as I see in all the articles designed to assist me with this issue. However, I open my sync dashboard and do not see ANY tab that states "Add a Device" as the articles also say. So I click on the "I am not near my computer" tab in the apps (both appear to work identically) and I am asked to enter my account, password, and sync key info. I cannot find an article anywhere that tells me what my sync key is or how to recover it if I have forgotten it~!!!@!!!!!!!! Please freaking help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Apps in the Apple App Store are not from Mozilla and possibly no longer work with Firefox as Firefox has now moved from Sync to Firefox Accounts. Mozilla does not have any apps out there in the Apple app store however, 3rd parties may but they're not vetted by Mozilla.

  • Sync iCal w/iPhone cannot uncheck Home?

Hey folks...this may be a totally silly question but I just need to know why this i s happening.
I did the subscribe thing to sync iCal with my Gmail calendar. OK. No problem there. The Gmail calendar shows up as a 3rd calendar in iCal. All is good.
Now, when I go to sync my iPhone I select the sync select calendars option but cannot uncheck Home.
    Why is this?
My husband can uncheck Home when he syncs his iPod Touch but I cannot with the iPhone. This is driving me nuts.
    Any ideas???
    Cheers.

Sorry if I wasn't clear enough.
I am using the "sync selected calendars" option.
I cannot uncheck the Home calendar. This seems to be a default that I cannot unselect.
I am running the most current version of iTunes.
The question is why my husband can deselect the Home calendar when syncing his iPod Touch but I cannot on my iPhone.

  • Mac failing to perform Home Sync on logoff

    Hi all,
We are a school who are currently using OS X 10.7.4 across the board. We are looking into a solution whereby the kids will have a network home folder to store their work, however, we need the work to be local on the machine whilst they are working on it, therefore want to use Portable Home Directories and Home Sync to acheive this goal.
We are using a Windows file server running Group Logic's ExtremeZ-IP solution to wrap the NTFS folder up and make it available through the afp protocol.
I have configured all of the settings I beleive I need to do within workgroup manager and have a test macbook alongside me which I am carrying out my experiments!
If I create a bunch of files in the user's network home and then log on, all of these files are then synced down locally to the machine. Great. However, when I modify any files and then logoff, the Home Sync instantly fails stating that it cannot access the file server. (I can however, access this particular share from the "Go To Server" window within that user's session).
The interesting part is that when I go to logon to the same machine as the same user, when the logon Home Sync occurs, the files created in the previous session are then synced back up to the server. So the Home Sync at logoff doesn't write back to the server because it can't find it ... but the home sync at logon does write back to the server.
    Any ideas anyone?!
    Regards,
    Dave

I manually copied over entire Address file and then reset Quad first to overcopy .Mac and then PC to reset to .Mac.
Had to do it twice, but eventually I was able to get it to work again.

  • Home Sync never completes on a logout from OSX Server

I have a Mac Pro running 10.6.4 and MacBook running same rev level. Seemed to have successfully configured Open Directory on the Mac Pro to manage mobile accounts. Mac Pro OD also is configured with AFP file sharing turned "on" and /Network share for storing portable home folders for the mobile accounts.
When logging into a managed mobile account on the MacBook, Home Sync fires up fine and completes its work. Created a file and saved it. Log out and Home Sync places file back into the Mac Pro repository for the Home Folders (under /Network). All seems well, until....
I decide to do some work on the MacPro with the managed mobile account. The login completes fine. I work with the file I originally created while on the MacBook. The problem occurs when I logout from this session. A message pops up indicating, and I paraphrase, that a Sync would not be necessary if I were to use /Network location. I click ok and the system proceeds to perform a Home Sync that then runs forever (ok all night or 8 hours after which time I click cancel).
Any ideas on resolving this problem? Thanks!

Please disregard my earlier post. I found what my problem is. I had the incorrect IP address setup on my client (long story).

  • I reformated my PC and lost my sync key and I have my iPhone connected to Sync but cannot find my sync key in the iPhone app

I have lost my sync key because I reformatted my PC and didn't have a backup of it and my only other device connected to Sync is my iPhone but I cannot access the sync key in the Firefox Home app. I really wish I didn't have to erase all my sync data as I have some important passwords and bookmarks saved only in Sync.

I did. Safari could not open the show sync key addon and Firefox Home didn't even try to load it for some reason.
The second addon install button is grey when I try to open it with Firefox Home.
Thank you, I appreciate the help but I guess unless there's a way to get the sync key for example via sftp from the iPhone (I have jailbroken) I'm pretty much doomed. I tried looking around the Firefox Home app folder but could not find the sync key in there. If someone knows where to look for the key it would be helpful, in case it isn't encrypted.

  • Portable Home Syncing corrupts iPhoto Library

    Server setup:
Snow Leopard Server 10.6.2 (clean install)
Everything setup according to spec; works great.
    Client setup:
    Snow Leopard 10.6.2 (clean install)
    iLife '09
Portable syncing rule set to sync the Pictures folder ONLY at login and logout. At no other time is it sync.
    Bug:
Everytime it syncs; the entire iPhoto Library gets corrupted and I get a 'There was a problem syncing this file'
When I check the file, the iPhoto Library is a generic white icon with a size of a few megs versus the original 5GB. (yes I have a backup).
Any idea what may be causing this?
I cannot deploy Snow Leopard Server for my clients because of this silly bug.

    Hi all.
I'm also having serious problems concerning "Home Syncing".
So far those are my conclusions:
    • Home Syncing cannot understand when a file is locked. It will simply replace the "archived" file on the server with a corrupted and incomplete one. (Time Machine, for instance, delays the syncing of that file until it is no longer being used):
    • Because of the last problem it's impossible to use the syncing interval on the System Preferences. It's simply begging for havoc and chaos.
    • Home Syncing (again on direct opposition to Time Machine) does not understand the concept of bundles (or packages, whatever is the correct expression in English... English that I'm not a native nor a fluent speaker, sorry about that
Not being able to understand those wonderful "folders as a single file" concept makes it try to copy my full Aperture library, even if I just open and close the thing.
So it's guaranteed fun for almost half an hour every time that I do some logout sync.
    • Even using only login / logout sync, Aperture library will get eventually corrupted, as will pretty much every other item that I try to sync that happens to be a bundle (That God for 1Password automatically backup of it's own library, otherwise I would have lost all my logins passwords and Software serial numbers).
    • Every so often files that were deleted on a machine on the last day, simply find their way back at login syncing.
And the opposite also happens. Changes made in a user folder on one of the machines, simply don't replicate when a user logs in onto another one.
    • If a folder or file name is changed, Home Syncing will not understand that as a change.
Instead it will get from the server the old file/folder while keeping the new one.
Since it will copy the full content of the folder, just changing the name back to the old one, you better pray that there's not that much info inside otherwise it's time to grab a coffee and the daily newspaper.
    • Copying is slow. Painfully slow!
In a full Gigabit Ethernet connection, whose transfer while using AFP are extremely fast, Home Syncing can take 10x the amount of time to copy a similar folder.
Home Syncing seems pretty much as a 2nd class citizen on the Server package.
It's copy capabilities are way bellow of the expected, showing basic errors that were quickly fixed on Time Machine but that still remain here since (at least) Mac OS X Server 10.5.
I like this concept... actually I like it a lot.
As long as you have access to a Mac OS X Server, you can basically create your own cloud.
Even without having to sync the full home folder, just a specific "cloud" folder (something like a dropbox folder).
That connected with a Time Machine backup to allow you to retrieve older version of a file (whenever necessary) and you would have a great and safe working environment... something that I would love to do, if only Home Syncing wasn't just a big disaster.
Let's hope that Apple can figure out what's happening and release an update to fix this.

  • If I tunes indicates that I have 4.29GB free on my 4S, then why do i get the message that it cannot complete the sync because of inadequate available space?

If I tunes indicates that I have 4.29GB free on my 4S, then why do i get the message that it cannot complete the sync because of inadequate available space?

Not the case.  There is a sync issue.  I tried to un-sync all your music to remove it from the device, then restart (hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until you see the apple, then let go). as suggested in another thread, but cannot remove the music from my phone (in an attempt to free up space as you intimated.)

  • How can I completely reset home syncing?

Portable Home Directories remains unreliable and buggy for me. I have a Mac mini server and two client machines: an iMac 2010 and a MBA 2009. I have tried everything I could find on the net about PHD syncing but have found it very buggy and unreliable. Currently:
    - when logging in as myself 50 conflicts are reported, but the remote file cannot be displayed (circular wait 'bar')
    - the client starts one after the other sync trying to do the same
    - Files removed on a client return form the server... sometimes
    - Unknown errors reported but files on both sides are identical (openssl md5 shows that)
Home Syncing rules are managed always and controlled from Workgroup manager
Currently, the situation is so bad that my main account has become unusable.I am looking for fail safe instructions to completely reset home syncing.

I dont know about any complete reset but this is what i'd do.
Make 100% sure that everything is on your machines by switching off airport and unplug then Network port then turn on and check everything is there. Proceed at own risk
if it is and you know what your doing and happy that everything is backed up etc.
Leve the computers off the network until the end
On the Server for each accoun turn off mobile account syncing, creation etc everything in mobility preference should say never.
Set your Home directory in Workgroup manager to None for each of the accounts
    Save new settings
Delete both the accounts home folders on the server (you will need the correct permissions to do this) empty trash
Reenable the home folders and create home on save
Go to the mobility preferences and set create home folders when next login etc  Check the Use local home template option,  Dont set any other options in there yet except under rules -> home sync - Manage -once or always depends on what you want then Apply
Reconnect the computers to the network (I always do this via ethernet not wireless, wireless sometimes causes problems) and restart and log into the account , it will sync away for a while (wireless can be used after the first sync)
Change settings in the mobility after the full sync if you need to and are sure you know what each setting will effect.
NOTE: If you have a huge iTunes library, Movies folder or Photos folder this can take ages perhaps think about taking them out of the sync.
Home syncs always have errors depending on what files are open at the time of sync etc
This is done from memory as i only had to do this about 2 weeks ago but i am fairly confident i didn't miss anything

  • DM 6 -Impossible to configure Organizer Sync

First time poster - Long time BB and DM user.
As usual, BB Desktop manager is a second rate sync tool.  I just installed DM 6.x on a XP running PC and was "successful" installing it.
The issue - and just a little one - I cannot "configure" the Organizer to sync with outlook.  I have tried several times using the configuration wizard and every time i check a box (Address, memo etc) it takes me through the steps and when I click finish, it congratulates me, then flashes and clears the checked box that I selected at the start of the process.  When I click Sync- it informs me that there are no boxes clicked.  no matter how many times I run through the process - there is no progress.
Help - I need to get this working as I need to update my outlook with the data on my BB asap.

For some reason, I cannot configure my work exchange server mail on my mac book pro. it works fine on my iphone and ipad but not on my mac. one thing I noticed is that there is no place to specify the domain on my mac. This might be the problem. I tried entering thedomain\username in the user name field but it still didn't work.

    Hello KAR1223
It sounds like the mailbox is not syncing up properly. If it an IMAP or Exchange account, then rebuild mail by going to the drop down menu Mailbox > Rebuild.

I Cannot configure mailaccount. iPad crashes as soon as i tap email, contacts and calendar in "instellingen"

While sync with Link should work it is buggy and is an afterthought to the whole BB10 system. I recommend using an Outlook.com account, installing the Hotmail connector in Outlook, and then syncing the Outlook.com contacts and calendar to the BB10 device. I say Outlook.com because it uses Exchange Active Sync which is the most reliable sync to the device.
I used to sync with Link as well but the Outlook.com wireless sync really is far better.
As for the original question I don't know why it's not recognized. i see this reported on the forums all the time.

  • More Home Sync woes

I pretty much gave up with Home Sync before we even got Snow Leopard. Automatic syncing is still a complete disaster and so I adjusted the prefs in WorkGroup Manager so that those managed Macs have it available, but only manually. In that way, I can (in theory at least) sync any Mac to its network home which makes it easy to set up that user on another Mac, which will then get the latest files.
This has worked for a MacPro, but a couple of MacBooks still insist on trying to sync automatically. Of course I cannot change it on the client Macs themselves and in WM the settings for all the Macs are the same, Always control but everything is set to manual. As I said, this is fine for the MacPro, but as I type this, the MacBook Pro is busy trying to sync umpteen Gb of data I just don't want. Of course there's no obvious way to simply tell it to stop either.
Undoubtedly the most useless and fundamentally flawed service of OSX Server, but has anyone had this same problem of not being able to get the client to understand that it should NOT be sync'ing? Any solution?

On 20mhz the max my HH3 puts out is in reality about 144 but more often than not 72.
Channels 1, 6 and 11 near me are full of BT WiFi , Sky and other subscribers.
I find the HH3 (mine is also the B) rubbish. I'll be ditching it for a Netgear WNDR router soon enough.
If 1,6 and 11 are congested then I wouldn't even consider 40mhz mode.
If you understand how this works by requiring an additional channel you can see why.
