  • Aperture Library on External USB disk

    Hello
My internal, 250GB disk on my iMac is almost full.
Are there any performance / reliability issues I should be aware of of moving my 50GB aperture library to an external USB disk ??
I don't use time machine to back it up - just the aperture vaults. I would probably back it up to a second external USB drive.
    Any help much appreciated.
    Andrew

USB2 is a poor connectivity method for hard drives on Macs, adequate for backup where speed is unimportant but bad news for a Library. Aperture performance is largely about the Library, so you want it on a relatively unfilled internal drive, definitely not on an external USB drive.
Hard drives slow as they fill above 40% or so. Take enough data off the internal drive to maintain at least 100 GB free space and keep the Aperture Library on the internal drive with Referenced Masters on external drives.
In the future buy large hard drives (currently the 1 TB size is cost effective) that have multiple connectivity methods that include Firewire800 and eSATA. One good source is OWC: <http://www.owcomputing.com/>.
    Good luck!

  • How does the security model work for external USB disks attached to an AEBS

I've attached a USB disk to my AEBS after partitioning it first on my MBP using Disk Utility. I created a single partition with a GUID partition table covering the entire disk. Next I deselected the "Ignore ownership on this volume" checkmark and assigned myself and my wife read/write access, my group read access, and the rest no access. Next, I hooked it up to the AEBS and created some test files. I noticed in Terminal that the files I created all had rwx access for user, group and others. Trying to chmod that into something less open, like rwx for me, rx for the group and nothing for others didn't work. Also I noticed that when I was logged in the files I had created had my name as the owner, but when my wife logged in, those same files were owned by my wife.
What is happening here ? Who is the actual owner of the files on the external USB disk on my AEBS, and what are the real access rights (as they seem to depend on the actual user). On my AEBS I've setup "File sharing", "With accounts" and created accounts for both me and my wife, as well as disabled guest account access.
I get the impression that the owner and access rights seem to depend on the actual user connected to the AEBS, but I'm not sure.
Can anybody please enlighten me on the subject of AEBS access rights/ownership for USB disks ?
    With kind regards,
    Aloy

All that I can provide is what has worked for me for years.
The Time Capsule is setup as the router for the network, connected to a simple Zoom 5431J cable modem.
Static Internet IP connection from the cable provider is 12.34.567.89
By default, the Time Capsule is at 10.0.1.1 on the local network
Port Mapping setup for the Time Capsule is......
    Public UDP Port 8884
    Public TCP Ports 8884
    Private IP 10.0.1.1
    Private UDP 548
    Private TCP 548
The hard drive on the Time Capsule is accessed from a remote location at afp://12.34.567.89:8884
The AirPort Extreme is connected by Ethernet to the Time Capsule and is it setup to operate in Bridge Mode
The AirPort Extreme always receives a reserved local IP address of 10.0.1.2 from the Time Capsule
The Port Mapping setup (on the Time Capsule) looks like this for the AirPort Extreme.......
    Public UDP Port 8888
    Public TCP Port 8888
    Private IP  10.0.1.2
    Private UDP 548
    Private TCP 548
The USB hard drive connected to the AirPort Extreme is accessed from a remote location at afp://12.34.567.89:8888
If you are still having difficulty, I would delete all of Port Mapping settings on the Time Capsule and Update the Time Capsule. Then, go back and setup the Port Mapping for the Time Capsule, check that to make sure that it is working, then setup the Port Mapping settings on the Time Capsule for the AirPort Extreme.

  • ExFAT external usb disk not working in Lion?

Hi, I used to be able to read/write to an external usb disk, exFAT formatted, using Snow Leopard.
Since upgrading to Lion I can't seem to be able to find the disk anymore on the desktop/finder. When I go into Disk Utility it sees it but thats pretty much all it will do. Anyone knows of this issue or how to fix it?
    Thanks
    Richard

I am encountering a similar issue where I can read but not write to an exFAT volume (connected over FireWire 800) in the Finder.  While I don't know of a fix, opening a Terminal and using CP to move files seems to work.

  • Time Capsule doesn't allow to access NTFS external USB Disks

good morning. I've just configured a 2TB Timecapsule, in a wireless network with 2 MACBookPro and 1 windows xp.
A HP HJPro 8500 is connected to TC and is reachable via wireless, thru a Belkin USB port replicator.
two time machine's usb disks are connected thru the same belkin adapter and work fine.
Another two external usb disks, formatted as NTFS, are not visible at all (even if they are, if connected directly to the macs of to the xp.
I've tried to disconnect the TM disks, leaving connected only the two ntfs disks, with no results.
Any idea to solve this issue? i don't expect to have NTFS disks not accessible thru TC.. no manuals mentioned this as a problem..

What is the problem? This disk is recognized by Tiger but only as read-only as it ships as an NTFS volume and must be erased and reformatted before it can be used by a MAC.
    All help appreciated.

I tried the partition approach and it unfortunately failed as well. The same "hung" symptoms as before. The green light (disk activity) on the disk flashed several times at the initial request, but that was all. I eventually interrupted it after a hourn which generated the same system log message: AppleUSBEHCI[0x1d59000]::Found a transaction past the completion deadline on bus 91, timing out!
    The disk utility log says:

  • Boot from external USB disk

Is there any way to boot from an external USB disk formatted in NTFS or UFS (CD/DVD format)? Basically my idea was to be able to boot the Win7 install image from an USB device. I tried many different ways, I even have my old internal HDD with the boot camp partition in a USB case (I just upgraded to 500GB!! ;)) but I can't in any way boot from USB. Only OSX backup and its installation disk boot fine from an external USB source. Any idea?

It isn't well supported by Microsoft. The problem on Apple hardware is you can't even make changes to the BIOS boot manager.
I have 4 internal hard drives so it is rather easy to boot from one hard drive and run the installer.
You ran into the lack of support for UEFI though which adds another layer and meant most likely having to alter and reburn the ISO to disc with Imgburn or something (and can be done from Windows only so you need a VM).
I got tired of the trouble and work arounds needed though and in the end I just built my own custom PCs - one of which has native eSATA that are bootable (an Intel DX58SO board).
Oh, and it is easy to install Windows 7 on PC, then just move the drive into Mac Pro and boot from there!

  • Problems saving files Using a FAT formated external usb disk

I want to share mi files between mac an pc and I don't want to expend 45 dollars buying MACDRIVE

Try installing "MacFUSE", which may provide better support for FAT and NTFS-formatted drives than the built-in filesystem support. Unlike the default support, MacFUSE will enable writing to NTFS drives, which may be a more compatible solution for your Windows PCs.

  • Tried to run Lion Recovery Disk Assistant, and now cannot access my external USB disk...

    Greetings all,
I run the app after downloading it from Apple but it failed with a message that it could not use that drive. From then on, the drive is inaccesible. Disk Utility cannot repair it, it reports "incompatible filesystem". If someone has an idea on this I would be grateful as I have rather important personal and family info on this drive... It is a Lacie external USB drive of 1TB.

When did the file assistant fail saying it couldn't use the drive? If it's suddenly inaccessible, I can only assume it started the erase process before it failed?
So you know for future reference, review this link.
    Excerpt from the above link:
    System requirements
A Mac running OS X Lion with an existing Recovery HD
An external USB hard drive or thumb drive with at least 1GB of free space
How to use Lion Recovery Disk Assistant
The Lion Recovery Disk Assistant will erase all data on the external drive when creating the Recovery HD. You should either backup your data before running the Lion Recovery Disk Assistant, or create a new partition on the external drive.

  • Time Machine times-out on external USB disk, but works on 2 others

    Hello,
I wanted to share my experience, in case it is helpful to someone else. It appears that one of my external hard disks has a hardware fault, or that TM is overly sensitive to its state, thus preventing me using it for backup.
After upgrading from Tiger to Leopard on my Macbook Pro 2.16GHz, I had been trying over the last couple of days, without success, to backup using Time Machine to an external USB hard disk at work. It is a Maxtor disk in a BlueEye U235 case. On each attempt to make the initial backup, TM would copy between 2 and 25GB of data (of 75 total) to the disk, and then stall indefinately, without giving an error. (Ejecting the disk at this point and restarting the computer just lead to further problems with completing the backup that I won't go into here). I tried many times, each time reformatting the disk (with the GUID partition map), deleting the TM preference file, restarting and ensuring all other apps were not running. I was completely fed-up!
I subsequently tried backing up for the first time on a freshly re-partitioned (GUID map) Firewire 400 external disk (Prolific PL3507 Combo Device in a BlueEye O2 case) at home, and this worked perfectly the first time, taking a couple of hours. (All applications were closed at the time). Subsequent backups to this drive work fine.
I tried again with the disk at work and it continued to fail. Finally I decided to follow what was being thrown up to the system.log. I discovered that shortly after TM was stalling (somewhere between 10 and 40 mins after commencing the backup), repeated messages would appear in system.log saying "kernel IOSCSIPeripheralDeviceType00::setPowerState(0x4cbe100, 2 -> 1) timed out after 100683 ms" (with the "2 - > 1" and number of ms different each time), with a few minutes between each one. This suggested to me that there was some sort of intermittent failure of the disk, or the connection between the Macbook Pro and the disk, or something I don't understand. It is worth keeping in mind that this disk has been working perfectly for me - I've been backup up entire system to it every couple of days using SuperDuper, without any errors or problems.
So, I then tried using a different (LaCie) Firewire disk at work, and after reformatting / partitioning (GUID map), the backup to this worked perfectly the first time, with the entire ~68 GB completing in about 2 hours. (As an aside, switching between the TM backup disks at Home and Work works well - TM just catches up from where it last left off on the particular drive).
The message I wanted to convey is that, in my experience, TM may fail during a backup (stall in fact, as no explicit message was generated) to a disk that outwardly appears to be fully functional. I'm not sure if in my case there is a minor error with the disk, a fault with TM, or both. Interestingly, upon bringing the disk home today and switching it on it won't mount at all, on my computer or that of my partner. I'm not sure if the problems with TM were therefore indicative of imminent disk failure, or whether the trip home in the pannier on my bike has damaged the drive . So, if you're having this or some other difficulty, on a drive that you haven't purchased new, it may be worth considering that an unsuccessful TM backup may be due to a current, or imminent, problem with the disk.
    Just my two cents worth.

Yes, I think you have a good point. The motivation for my post was just to make people aware - as there seems to be many people having problems with TM - that maybe the first drive you try, particularly if it is not new, may not work and that it is worth trying another if you can. Particularly in light of the fact that I didn't receive any explicit error messages, that is other than the one in the system.log file.
The USB disk was powered separately and was plugged directly into one of my USB ports (not via a hub). At the same time a USB mouse was plugged in. I think it is USB 2, but I'm not sure, and as it is not working now, I don't know how to check.
The rate at which data is copied to the two drives that work (via Firewire 400) seemed to be quite similar to the rate for the USB drive, until it bombed out.

I"ve had the Officejet al in one for a year or more now and it has worked fine connecting well to my old Macbookair (10.5.8) with few problems printing wirelessly. Since getting a brand new Imac with spanking new software I cannot connect. There seems to be no printer drivers in the imac so I downloaded the full HP suite. Still using
    system prefs>

    add printer
nothing appears. Not recognised. At all. Updated OS. REbooted printer. Reconnected to network router (BT Home hub5) form scratch. Only recognised when I attached it to USB, but as soon as I unplugged it was 'offline' despite both imac and OJ being connected to same network router. Can you help...? Your helppages simply direct me to go through the steps referred to above ie how to 'add' a new printer in the OS system prefs (which I can't as it simply does not show up unless connected by wire, which defeats the object...).

Hi @trevorpick , and welcome to the HP Forums!
I see you're running into printing issues.  I would like to help.
I would suggest deleting the printer from your print system, using this document: Uninstalling the Printer Software.
Once you have deleted it, I would suggest verifying and repairing the disk permissions: About Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions feature.
I would also suggest running your Apple updates:  OS X: Updating OS X and Mac App Store apps
After the updates, I would recommend readding the printer via OS X v10.9 Mavericks: Installing and Using the Printer on a Mac
Once it is readded to your system, I would recommend this document on Wireless printing center Troubleshooting Issues.
Good luck and please let me know the results of your troubleshooting steps. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums!

  • My Macbook Pro mid 2012 is not reading/connecting to my (working)external hard disk(also not showing in disk utility)

I connected my 500GB Storjet external hard drive to my mac(Mountain Lion) http://in.transcend-info.com/products/Catlist.asp?modno=325 but it is not connecting to it. Disk Utility is also not showing it. and the hard disk is working... My PS3, My Sony TV and my other laptop(win7) is detecting it... Also whenever it gets connected a blue light blinks, but It doesnt for mac. I have tried reformatting to both FAT32 and NTFS... Please help..
Also I sorta screwed my Mac so I had to do the internet recovery thing and only after that such problems occured, it was working fine before. So it installed Lion first and then Mountain Lion. It wasn't working on any of the OS.

Power down the Mac, Full power off. Connect the drive using the Y cable and then turn the Mac back on.
If it still doesn't show in at least Disk Utility then start checking your USB ports to see if both are working properly. Just plug in a USB thumb drive and that should show in both Finder and Disk Utility. If one of the ports isn't seeing the thumb drive then that port is bad and the system needs to be services by Apple.

  • Aperture 2.1.1 Vault problem with external usb  disk

I have just updated to 2.1.1 and now Aperture freezes every time I connect my usb external disk and try to create or update a vault. I have to force quit Aperture and remove the disk before I can use Aperture again. The only way I can create a vault is to create it on my internal disk then manually copy to the external usb. Another topic here suggested the problem is with network disks but I have a very similar problem with a local usb disk. I have tried two different disks with the same results. All my software and os is up to date.
Does anyone else have this problem?

I have a similar problem, and have a not totally satisfactory fix for my issue.
I have my photos stored on an external FW drive.
Originally I also stored my vault on the same drive.
When I started Aperture with this config then Aperture would not pass the loading screen. I would have to kill the process to quit.
If I started Aperture with the FW drive disconnected then it would launch, but I would then attach eth FW drive and have to Manage referenced files.
    What has worked for me:
I have removed the vault from the FW drive and Aperture now boots quickly as 2.1 did.
I have to create the vault on the internal HD and copy to the external.
