Cannot connect/create video in iMovie HD w/built-in iSight?
My built-in iSight camera seems to work fine in iChat, green light goes on, I can see myself onscreen, etc. I want to record myself talking into the camera for a 10 minute video. When I open iMovie HD, it says No Camera Attached, when the mode button is on the camera. Supposedly I should see a pop-up menu when placing my cursor over the little camera icon, where I could select the built-in iSight camera, but no menu pops up. What else do I need to do?

Use iMovie 08, seems iMovie 06 no longer supports the iSight. I had the same issue. Works in iMovie 08.

Cannot export a video from imovie because the original videos are deleted from the album
Hi,
I made a mistake. I have an iMovie project but I cannot anymore export the project, because I have deleted the original files.
However, I am able to play the video within iMovie by only playing it as "play full screen". If I try to play a video in the list of first page starting the imovie it would not play. A notification pops up saying "none of the missing videos were found. If the missing videos are on you computer, sync the videos to your device and relaunch iMovie." Although I already deleted my original videos..
So the movie seems to be somehow there.
Also before when I deleted my videos in album, I finished a step of uploading on youtube. But when I checked my youtube video menager, the video shows as it failed and unable to to convert video file.
Do you know a way of how I can export the movie again?
Thank you and best regards,
KevinAny luck?
I to have the very same issue and can not get it off my phone to view on a pc or similar ? -
Cannot connect to video with another user
I recently updated my operating system to Snow Leopard, so I have iChat version 5.0.3 and I can't seem to video chat with another user who still has Tiger with iChat version 3.1.9. We have no problems chatting, but the video chat will not work.
Any suggestions?Hi,
Many possible suggestions from here.
In System Preferences > Security > Firewall tab is the Firewall On ?
If it is go to the Advanced Button.
In here is Allow Signed Apps selected and iChat in the list ?
(I am expecting you to confirm it is Off or iChat is listed with Allow Signed Apps selected as you can Video with a Text account)
In iChat > Preferences > Video/Audio section change the Bandwidth Limit drop down to read 500kbps.
Your Buddy on iChat 3 should go to System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab and check this is set to 1.5Mbps T1/Intranet/LAN
This is needed to get the best speed out of his Connection.
You setting the 500kbps should stop/slow down iChat 5 from expecting a response too quickly and will also smooth out any variances in your Connection Speed.
There is no Quicktime Setting in Snow Leopard to limit iChat.
I presume you update to Snow Leopard from Leopard and that your Router is already set up for iChat ?
Ideally the ports iChat needs should be opened with UPnP as it allows iChat Screen Sharing to other iChat 4 and 5 users.
You will be getting Logs of the failed chats.
The Pop up can be opened at the reveal Triangle on the left near the word Details.
Old ones are stored in your Home Folder/Library/Logs/iChatConnectionErrors
It would be interesting to see the last one (Less the bits below the line that reads Binary Images for iChat
In the Connection Doctor (Video Menu) there is a new option for Network Status which will give some clues about how your router does NAT.
The Log should also give details about your end and the Buddies device (If it gets that far)
The Test Accounts use Public IPs (no router involved) and don't therefore use NAT which gets around some of these issues. (Effectively it is only a partial test about your Set up)

Unibrain's "Fire-i" FW video cam for Macs without built-in iSight
I now have a MacBook and an Intel Core Duo iMac with built-in iSight, but my wife has a G5 iMac, and has no video for using either iChat or Skype to visit with far-flung relatives.
I just received delivery of a Unibrain "Fire-i" Firewire Digital Camera from L.A. Computer Company (http://www.lacomputercompany.com/cgi-bin/rpcart/index.cgi?command=dispitem&type= sku&sku=25036). US$99 + US$8.70 S&H. (OOPS! One more thing: the regular price is USD$119. I forgot that I got a $20 discount through the DealMac website which I visit almost daily -- the DealMac site gives the discount code "firedc" that might still work).
It was a snap to install (literally: just snap in the included FW cable to the camera and to a handy FW receptacle, in my case, an open one on an external drive enclosure). That's all! It was instantly recognized (and iChat was automatically opened) by both iChat and Skype. The lens ring has a focusing capability that is not mentioned in the packaging, and the image was initially fuzzy and out of focus, but a little "nudging" counterclockwise on the ring immediately cured that. The video, at least what one sees on Skype and iChat, is just about as good as iSight, except that, unlike iSight, there is no microphone, so you need to add your own (my wife uses a USB headset with earphones and microphone, anyway).
These sites do not support images, but if you look at the above web site, you can visualize that if you collapse the legs of the included miniature tripod so that they all lie in a plane, and adjust the camera's position, you can stick it on the top of the monitor with Velcro fastener tape, adhering to the black support on the tripod and to the top of the monitor. Then, there is a little lever that allows you to unlock the mount in order to tweak the aiming of the camera and then re-lock it. All-in-all, this took about five minutes.
Highly recommended.
--SteveHi, Rod. No, I did not notice any effect on other FW externals. But, I had it pluffed into an external HD that was powered by an external power brick, so, presumably, it was adding its own juice to the FW connection, including the camera. But, the iSight external was also a FW plug-in, so I don't think that this would be any worse. The camera is featherweight, so I cannot imagine any heavy current draw.

I can't record straight into iMovie with my built in iSight
My built-in iSight works with iChat and Photo Booth, but not iMovie. How do I fix this?
Hi
Under the viewer (Window that plays Your clips or movie) You can select
editing or Camera. On my Camera button there is a smal black triangle.
Click on this and select iSight.

I had absolutely no problem doing video chats with ichat for about 9 months, then one day, it just stopped working. There is no problem with type-chat, but neither voice nor video works.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Whether I initiated or another person initiated, I get the following error:
Here are some details:
0x1c202650: State change from AVChatNoState to AVChatStateWaiting.

Chat ended with error -4
[email protected]: State change from AVChatStateConnecting to AVChatStateEnded.
Chat ended with error -4If you are both on 10.4.x and not on Leopard then you will not get Error 4.
The first Log obviously shows Error 4 so if it was reported at the time you connected to this Buddy I would suggest that the Previous person had been a Leopard user (even a successful contact).
I say this because my iChat will give me error messages with one number but list the name of the contact that I have being trying or talking to previous to this.
Error 8 can be anything form th Mac Firewall being On but no iChat ports set (in Tiger) to anything "wrong" with the LAN.
The details form where the quote you posted ends and the Line starting Binary Images for iChat is the important bit in this.
The amount and type of info this contains can give clues as to where to look.
The error itself is a log of the behind the scenes stuff that happens after the Visible Invite.
It is reported back to you on port 5678 the same as the Visible Invite.
It hopefully list the SIP port you Buddy is trying to use and the one you are trying to use.
Tiger to Tiger (iChat 3) this should list port 5060
As Port 5060 is used for VoIP applications and devices you have to look to whether a Vonage or similar device has been added or if the ISP has started to offer a VoIP service and have blocked the ports for SIP (5060-5063). Many ISPs are now doing this to recover what they see as Lost money to Video IM apps and Vonage and other devices/services. They are trying to stop These other services but as iChat uses SIP it gets effected. If your ISP changed their services without telling you, you may be able to talk them into opening the ports again as they have blocked your (or your Buddy) from using them.
If we can see the log it may help.
Stop at the line saying Binary Images for iChat

I have been using Skype for a few years now, and have accepted
that Skype has its good days and bad. for the past couple of days, i have been
trying to call my in-laws so they can chat with their Grandkids. we are both
online within Skype, when I click to make the video call, it makes the normal
sound like it does when you first hit video call, and then nothing.
there is no ringing (on either side) and no indication that the
other person is attempting to contact you. I have tried calling my in-laws
multiple times and she has tried the same, no luck either way!
I also attempted to call the Skype automated test lady, and the
same thing happens.
I have restarted my computer multiple times, however, I have not
tried uninstalling and reinstalling Skype. I am pretty sure I have one of the
newer updates to Skype.
any other suggestions would be most helpful!
thanks in advance!

Apple TV cannot connect to iMovie Theater Channel
My Apple TV (3rd generation) CAN connect to My Music, My Films etc... but CANNOT connect anymore to the iMovie Theater Channel. The Apple TV is up to date and its "region" is correct. It happened when I updated my iMac to Yosemite and to the new iMovie application. But the home made movies on the iMovie Theater were posted before the Yosemite update and I had no trouble connecting to them. Thank you in advance.
Greetings bacave,
If you are having an issue with using iMovie Theater with your Apple TV since updating your computer's operating system to Mac OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -

Imac g5 not capturing video with built-in isight...
in imovie hd (iLife 05). anyone ever run into this issue?
cLHello Cody. I don't think RJ's suggestion will help you with this one.
in imovie hd (iLife 05). anyone ever run into this issue?Everybody does. According to Apple, the iSight built into an iMac G5 (iSight) is not able to capture video into iMovie.
See the "How can I get my built-in iSight to capture iMovie video clips?" section of Built-in iSight ( Late 2005 -> ) for more info and a workaround. -
IMovie 4 won't recognize isight camera
I have a MacBook Pro, bought it used a few months ago. I'm just now getting around to using the isight camera with iMovie. But iMovie does not recognize the iSight camera. I am able to use photobooth and iChat with the camera, so I don't think the problem is iSight. I am using Mac OSX 10.5.8
The iMovie version is iMovie 4, which surprises me since this is a relatively new MBP. But whatever, it should work. Any suggestions will be appreciated.EdinMPLS wrote:
First of all, thanks for the responses.
You're welcome.
I just find it confusing that apple 1) makes a computer with a video camera ...
Perhaps understanding a few facts will reduce your confusion.
The Macs with the built-in camera are a fairly recent development. In fact, these Macs were introduced at (approximately) the same time Apple introduced iLife '06, which includes the iMovie version compatible with built-in iSight.
... 2) installs movie software that ...
iMovie is part of iLife, which is sold separately:
http://www.apple.com/ilife/ (current version)
The fact that iMovie and other iLife apps are bundled with current Macs is a bonus for the customer.
iLife was not bundled with some older Macs, but owners of older Macs that meet iLife system requirements can add the versions they need. Note that many requirements, not only camera compatibility, differ for different iLife versions.
If you consider adding the current iLife, check your MacBook Pro's specifications against iLife '09's system requirements:
http://support.apple.com/kb/SP515
... 3) doesn't work with the built-in camera. I know, I know, different versions, usb vs. FW, etc. Still seems crazy to me.
The software that came with the Mac you bought did work with the built-in camera.
It is important to consider system requirements for any software you add to your computer. As regards older software versions like iMovie 4 and built-in iSight, I think it impossible that any software could be made to be compatible with hardware that has not yet been developed as of the software release date.
Based on this information, I hope that this lack of compatibility no longer seems as "crazy" to you as it initially did.
Here's another question: I bought this used, and migrated my old data on to it. Now, did it transfer the "old" version of iMovie from my old computer (iBook) when it transferred the data?
The answer will depend on how you "migrated." If you migrated your files manually, only those things you personally moved will be transferred.
If you used Migration Assistant, the answer is likely yes. This article may be of interest:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1963
Is it possible this newer computer still has a newer version of iMovie hidden somewhere in its bones?
This answer, too, depends on what you did. If you erased the used disk before you began using it, a newer version of iMovie will only be there if you reinstalled it or "restored" your MBP using the disks that originally came with it.
If you did not erase, all iMovie versions that currently reside on your MBP should be in your Mac's "Applications" folder unless someone has moved them.
With Leopard (OS X 10.5) being comprised of hundreds of thousands of files, finding individual files manually is unlikely. At this time, your best choice is to look at the disks that came with your MBP. If you got an iLife DVD, you can install the version that came with your MBP now.

I am starting to do video blogging more and have built in iSight on my MacBook and MacBook Pro. I also have the old iSight external web cam that was made prior to them being built into the computers. I never used the external camera because when I bought it, web cam's weren't popular and I couldn't get anyone else to learn to use one to skype with me, plus back then... I had no idea nor no use for video blogging. Before I pull it out and try to learn how to use it, I was just wondering if anyone else has used it and whether the quality from the external camera is significantly better than the built in cameras - enough to warrant using it rather than the built in.
Thanks for any suggestions!Notebooks

Cannot export video clips. Get message: "unable to create video for export"
Cannot export video clips from iPhoto to Finder folder. Export fails with message "unable to create video for export: "
The video clips play correctly within iPhoto.
Software: iPhoto version 9.5 on OSX 10.9
Hardware: Retina Macbook Pro 2.3 i7 8GBYes. I have 3,184 video clips in this library. I tested Reveal function by randomly selecting individual video clips and in every case the Reveal in Finder function worked correctly. I also tested this on random selections of groups of video clips and, again, the Reveal function worked correctly in every case.
Some more info that may be relevant:
I have multiple iPhoto libraries. My "main" library is very large (~30,000 files) and is located on an external hard drive (2TB WD) which is connected via USB.
The problem reported here is occuring on that "main" library. I have not opened any other iPhoto library since installing the new release.
While the File>Export function does not work, I have been able to simply copy and paste video clips from iPhoto library to a folder on Mac hard drive. It appears that meta data is copying correctly along with the video content.
I am able to import these copied video clips to iMovie. Meta data is imported along with the video content and I'm able to perform iMovie editing functions on those clips without any problems.
In summary, the File>Export function still fails with the message "unable to create video for export." Copying video clips and pasting them to interim folder seems to be a viable workaround enabling me to extract video clips from iPhoto for import to iMovie. I will run additional tests to see if I can find a pattern to the video files that are being rejected by iPhoto Export function. -
My Mac is showing that I am out of disk space. It says I have 175 MB of videos. I cannot find any videos in Itunes, Imovie or IPicture. What gives?
For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.
