Cannot connect desktop (wired) & laptop (wireless)

I've been at this for days, scoured much info and many threads, and tried many things; so I could go on and on for days about all I've found and tried.  I'll try to be concise, but I also want to be thorough.  Every other forum I’ve posted in has asked the same questions, so I’m just going to try to get it all out there right off the bat.  I apologize if I come off as curt.  I’m usually good for some laughs, but I’ve been at this for way too long and am feeling pretty deflated.
GOAL:  Achieve connectivity between my desktop and my new T520 - be able to swap files without fumbling thumb drives or emailing myself.
SYSTEM SPECS:
   Desktop
self built: AMD Phenom II X4 3.4GHz
Mobo: Gibabyte GA-890GPA-UD3H
network adapter:  Realtek RTL8168D/8111D
running Windows 7 Professional
   Laptop
Lenovo T520
network adapter:  Intel Centrino Advanced N 6205
running Windows 7 Home Premium
   Router
Belking F5D8231-4  version 3000
SUMMARY OF EFFORTS THUS FAR:
Firewalls:  Windows & router disabled
Anti-virus:  (AVG) disabled, then uninstalled
Network adaptor drivers: updated
Router firmware: updated
Router has been restored to factory settings
Power cycles performed multiple times at various points
Tried static ip addresses (presently set to dynamic) - shared ip addresses not the cause
Sharing options have been enabled both in general network settings and specific folders
Pinging results in either "Request timed out."  or  "Destination host unreachable."
My network is designated a "Home network"
Neither machine is connected to multiple networks
Both machines are assigned to same Workgroup: tried changing from generic "WORKGROUP" to custom name to isolate my machines from rommie's
Relevant services I've been told to check and confirmed started:
                         - DHCP Client
                         - Computer Browser
                         - Network Location Awareness
                         - Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
                         - Server
                         - TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
                         - Workstation
                         - Peer Networking Grouping
                         - PNRP Machine Name Publication Service
Under Local Area Network Status I've noticed that IPv4 shows connectivity to internet, but IPv6 says "No Internet Access" - disabling IPv6 has no effect
When I create a Windows Homegroup on one machine, an invite to join is never extended to the other.
I installed TeamViewer as alternative to Homegroup.  After setup, the program claims to have a working connection, but any attempt to access the other gives an error.
Now, the name of my laptop will sometimes appear under Explorer>>Network, but clicking on it gives an error message (can't think what it says & the laptop isn't visible right now); while my laptop has never shown my desktop.  However, if I hardline my laptop to the router, suddenly the two are best friends - connecting, accessing folders, swapping files, trading recipes, sharing steamy cups of Maxwellhouse International Cafe.
Does anybody have any insights into this situation?  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  I’ve wondered if perhaps there was some pre-installed Lenovo software that interferes with networks the way firewalls or anti-virus programs can?  I've tried calling both Belkin and Lenovo tech support - played their little choose your own adventure games.  Belkin's final word is that its a software issue.  I'm at a complete loss.
I'm always asked for ipconfig and ping results at some point, so I'll go ahead and post them below.  I've also found some errors in Administrative Events on both machines that may provide clues:
Dhcp-Client (both)   -   The IP address lease 192.168.2.2 for the Network Card with network address 0x6CF049E337F0 has been denied by the DHCP server 192.168.2.1 (The DHCP Server sent a DHCPNACK message).
bowser (desktop)   -   The master browser has received a server announcement from the computer GLADOS that believes that it is the master browser for the domain on transport NetBT_Tcpip_{4F23028C-E9A3-47B6-94A5-025192E2DBE0}. The master browser is stopping or an election is being forced.
BROWSER (laptop)   -   The browser service has failed to retrieve the backup list too many times on transport ....  The backup browser is stopping
I don't really know much about Windows services and events, but they sound like they could be related, and they're the only lead I have to work right now.

Just throwing this out there: I had a cash register which bafflingly refused to talk to other systems on the network, except for just a few minutes after it booted. The problem was cured by unchecking "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" in the Power Management tab of the Realtek ethernet card Device Manager Properties.
I don't work for Lenovo. I'm a crazy volunteer!

  • Printer cannot connect with the Laptop - IP address are the same which is the issue

I have a HP Photosmart All in One printer that is connected to a desktop wirelessly and it works effectively on the desktop.  I had it connected to a laptop as well. It stopped working one day with the laptop and has not worked since. It continues to work with the  desktop. I have uninstalled/reinstalled the installation on the laptop, still does not work.  When I go to connect the laptop to the network and put in the IP address it says "The IP address entered is currently being used by this computer. Please confirm that your printer actually has this IP address or enter the correct address below and click search"  I have checked, double checked and tripled checked and it is the IP address that I got from the printer.  Same issue comes up with using the Host name.   Can anyone provide me with a solution? Thank you!!

Hi, Please give printer a FIX IP address, say from 200 to 254 and it will stay. Your other devices (phones, tablets ... ) including computers can use other addresses from 2 to 199 or from 1 to 199. Regards.

  • I have a Linksys WRV200 wireless router and the wireless signal is not working properly so I cannot connect to the internet wirelessly. the wireless light has a fast green blinking light. how can I fix the router?

I have a Linksys WRV200 wireless router and the wireless signal is not working properly so I am unable to connect to the internet wirelessly.  The wireless light is blinking green very quickly and I connect and disconnect from the network constantly.  How do I get the router to work properly

    Hello James,
The flashing WLAN light means activity (data getting transferred). Try disconnecting all your devices and check whether the light is still flashing or disconnect the router from internet and do the check.
Do you have your SSID as linksys or the default one? If your neighbor has the same SSID, then traffic could result from your neighbor's one. Try changing your SSID and password. Make your security WPA/WPA2.
    Hope this helps,
    Thanks
    Vijay

  • WRT610N : laptops cannot connect to 5 Ghz wireless network !

    Hello,
I have a Linksys WRT610N (hardware v1) router, and i configured the wireless settings for the 5 Ghz and the 2.4 Ghz
wireless network, but the problem is that my laptops (wifi n compatible) only detect the 2.4 Ghz network, but NOT the
5 Ghz network.  I have no clue what the problem might be :-(
    These are my configurations :
Settings for wireless network (5 Ghz) :
    network mode : only wireless-n
    network name (SSID) : WRT610WiFi-N
channel width : auto (20 or 40 Mhz)
    wide channel : auto (DFS)
    standard channel : auto (DFS)
    SSID broadcast : enabled
Settings for wireless network (2.4 Ghz) :
    network mode : only wireless-g
    network name (SSID) : WRT610WiFi-G
channel width : only 20 Mhz
    wide channel : auto
    standard channel : auto
    SSID broadcast : enabled
Security Mode on both is "WPA2-personal", and encryption is "WPA-TKIP or WPA2-AES"
But my laptops only see the WRT610WiFi-G, and not the other one :-(
I am somewhat disappointed currently, as you can understand, but hopefully someone here can
provide me with a solution for this problem...
    best regards,
    Chris.

  • Cannot connect Windows 7 laptop to USB HDD attached to Airport Extreme

I would appreciate anyone's help regarding the following issue. The situation is as follows:
    Laptop with Windows 7 installed
Laptop connects to Airport Extreme (5th generation) through Wifi
An external HDD (WD Elements 1TB) is attached to the Airport Extreme's USB
The external HDD is visible in Airport Utility and should work fine, as far as the Airport Utility is concerned
The external HDD is also visible in Windows Explorer and works fine when I attach it directly to the laptop's USB
However, I cannot access the HDD from my laptop when it's connected to the Airport Extreme's USB
I've followed all the steps described in http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1331 for mapping a network drive, so I've done the following:
    I opened "Map Network Drive"
I selected an unused drive letter
I checked the Airport Extreme for the correct IP address (in my case: 10.0.1.1) and the HDD for its correct name (in my case called: "Backup")
I entered the correct path to the drive, using the above IP address and HDD's name
After doing all this, I keep receiving the following error message: "Windows cannot access \\10.0.1.1\Backup. Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try and identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose."
Details of the error message are as follows: "Error code: 0x80070035. The network path was not found."
When I select "Diagnose", Windows indicates that the external device or the external source does not accept the connection.
Access to the Airport Extreme is password protected. Same for the HDD. However, Windows does not prompt me to give the username and password, which might be causing the problem.
Does anyone have any idea how to solve this?
    Thanks,
    Paul

If you are connected by wireless.. it is actually wireless that is the problem.
30MB file (please try and use b for bits and B for Bytes.. )
that works out around 300Mb (with overheads).
That is 60Mbit/s average speed.. and for wireless I would say that is pretty good. (Real world transfer speed you can expect 1/2-1/4 of link speed.. and tending to the lower end of that. )
Plug the computer in by ethernet and get a speed for transfer of a single large file.. try something of the 1GB sort of size. A movie file for instance works fine.
Ethernet should be faster than any other step in the process.. assuming gigabit of course.. and that will then give you the upper limit speed.. but I would expect around 10MB/s max speed and maybe a bit less than that. USB on a router is choked because it is processor intensive. Most routers only manage that speed and sometimes a lot less.
Wireless on 5ghz band is faster than 2.4ghz if you are up close. It is worthwhile forcing the 5ghz connection if you want better wireless speed.

  • Cannot Connect to Domain Through Wireless Connection

    Hello TechNet Gurus,
As the title suggests, I am having issues connecting to my domain through a wireless connection. I am running Windows Server 2008 R2 (Data Center and Enterprise) to build my understanding of server administration to supplement my undergraduate
coursework (B.S. Computer Engineering & Cyber Security minor). So far I have a working domain controller attached to a switch that I re-purposed from an old WRT54G Linksys router. In turn, the switch is attached to a WRT54GS Linksys router.
When connected through physical media, the domain controller works as expected. I can connect to the domain from two personal laptops running Windows 7 Professional and from two virtual environments running Windows 7 Enterprise. Through these connections, I
can divvy out group policy, access network drives, and other services successfully. However, I attempted to connect wireless, and when I do, I continually get an error indicating that my username/password is incorrect. I carefully re-input the login information
(over-and-over), and I even recreated the user/computer objects. All to no avail.
After a couple of days of research between classes, homework, and work, I found some promising tips:
Added the following entry to the registry for the local machine: %comspec% /c netsh wlan connect name="JBnetwork"
Added the following local group policy (using gpedit.msc): Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative templates\System\Logon\Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon
Unfortunately, the above tips have not resolved the issue. From what I understand, the issue stems from the order that the wireless software and domain authenticate. I have also read that this may purely be a networking issue that is not directly related
to Active Directory or Windows 7 configurations. Whatever the situation is, this has me completely stumped and I could use some expert advice.
This is my ipconfig, for the reference:

    @Zanderol24,
Thanks for following up with me. I completely forgot about this post because I was able to figure out a solution by poking around in Group Policy.
The issue was a pretty simple fix. I tweaked the wireless policy a bit: Computer Configuration > Policies > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Wireless Network (IEEE 802.11) Policies.
    Thanks again!

  • Hp Laserjet Cp1025 nw color won't connect to my laptop wirelessly

I have had my Hp Laserjet cp1025 nw for less then a year and we moved to a new place and since we have moved i have not been able to get my printer to connect wirelessly. I have to send whatever I am printing to my phone and then eprint it which is a pain.  The wireless light just keeps blinking and I have installed and uninstalled the program for it multiple times. I am a student and have a ton of things that I have to print off so I need to get this fixed asap

    Here is your support page.

Read everything, Getting Started and the manuals are here too.  Once the wireless light is on solid you should be good to go.
Student?  This is YOUR router that you have control over right?
Say thanks by clicking the Kudos Thumbs Up to the right in the post.

  • Cannot connect to the internet wirelessly

I just put a new HD in my Satellite L35-S2161. I did not use the Toshiba Restore disk, instead I used my XP Pro/ SP3 disk. I have two problems.
First I cannot get my wireless to work. I have installed the Atheros PCI Driver and the Atheros Client Utiliy. I also installed ConfigFree.
The wireless card is not showing up in hardware manager, so I'm missing something else.
I put the original harddrive back in and everything works, so it must be a driver software issue.
Also the Power Saver Utility is not working. The only thing I can find is that I need the Toshiba Common Modules. OK where can I find it.
    Can you help?

Thank you for your response. I have been to the Toshiba support site and I find no Common Modules download for my Satellite L35-S2161 with XP. There is a Common Modules for Windows 7.
I just opened my Toshiba Restore Disk and I don't see a Common Modules in any of the folders. All of the Toshiba stuff is in a folder named COMPS1. There is a folder called Toshiba Utilities. Could this be the needed files? Here is what it says on the notepad in that folder
"This package is for the Toshiba Utilities. It includes Hardware Setup and Power Save features, which can help you to customize your computer's hardware settings. "
Again I thank you for any help that you can provide.

  • Cannot connect Photosmart C4780 to wireless network

    Hi.
I have a HP Photosmart C4780 printer that I'm trying to connect to our wireless network, from my Mac (OS X 10.8.4)
I am trying to install the printer on my MacBook using the CD provided with the printer.  The software installs, and then I get stuck at the setup. I get the message "No Wireless Network Discovered". I check the box saying " type in our network name, and get the message "Device Not Connected: To configure the network settings of the selected device, please connect it temporarily via USB. The device can be disconnected from the USB once the network settings are transferred."  I plug the USB cable into my Mac, hit "OK", then "Continue".
Now the message I get is: "Network Unavailable: The selected Wi-Fi Network "xxx" is not within the reach of the device." (Note: the device is about a foot away from the router).  Hitting "Retry" yeilds the same error message - and I'm stuck.
The wireless function on the printer is on. I restored the network default settings on the printer. The router is a D-Link DIR-826L Wireless N600 Dual Band Gigabit Cloud Router.  The router is new to us - we had no issues with our old D-Link router (but it died so had to be replaced).
    Any help would be appreciated!

    cmd1979,
In order to get this installed wirelessly you will need three things
    1.) Windows OS system
    2.)USB cord
3.) Full feature software from the HP website
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&lc=en&product=3794615&
You can install the software on the windows system and install it USB. Then you will be able to convert the USB to wireless through the HP software. The printer will then be on the network. On the mac you will go to Settings->Print and scan->Add printer->Select your printer from the list->Choose add.
Let me know how this works for you.

  • Cannot connect to internet using wireless airport on my iMAC

I am running Leopard on my iMac and less than a week ago I was able to connect to the internet by wireless airport express. Now it says that my airport is working and connected but when I open Safari, I only get a partial url load and then it freezes and eventually after about 3-5 minutes it gives me a "You are not connected to the internet". I recently installed updates and I believe that after that is when it stopped working. After hours of troubleshooting research on the internet, I've tried creating a new network, editing the location from Automatic to a new one, simply shutting down and unplugging for a couple of minutes and plugging back in and rebooting for example and nothing has worked. Does anybody have any thoughts that could help me get back up and running again?
    Thanks!

Even though your profile does NOT show you updated to 10.5.2 I suspect you did by the way you are talking. The problem with 10.5.2 is in an extension file ( which is really a folder ) it is the root to the wi-fi problems. I will be posting a fix 1-2 days. In the mean time you should download a program called Pacifist Vers. 2.5.2. The trial version will work but I suggest you pay the $20 shareware because he earn it and if my feelings are correct about Apple you will need it again.

  • No IP address...suddenly cannot connect to my home wireless network

My wireless network had been working PERFECTLY from the moment i got my iBook...but its been about a month now that its just not working. And i've looked online, called for support...and i can't figure out what the heck it wrong.
I have a Westell VersaLink Gateway modem/router...and the AirPort card in my iBook G4 worked perfectly since i brought my iBook home from the store. But starting about a month ago...it started giving me some trouble. I was surfing the web when all the sudden, i couldn't visit anymore web pages...and according the the wireless thingy in the task bar, i have a 100% strong connection to the wireless settings. And after trying to figure out whats wrong. i found out that my iBook isn't getting the rightIP addres...
I tried so many things (restarting my router...many times, deleting my system prefs, manually typing in the IP address, etc.) but nothing worked. and i'm starting to get real frustrated with having to be connected via ethernet cable into my router.
So i can connect to my router via ethernet cable...but not wireless...does anyone know what i could do?
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

My computer is doing the same thing! My hard drive crashed a week ago--it worked before the new hard drive, but no longer. I can get on other wireless networks--at the Apple store, my coffeehouse, my friend's house--but no longer at home. At home, it shows full bars and says I'm connected, but I can't actually navigate anywhere on the web. My connection is through a Linksys router, using SBC/Yahoo DSL.
Any new ideas that might account for this?

  • Wireless working, but devices cannot connect

Just recently, my FIOS wireless router started acting up. Regardless of what Wi-Fi enabled device I use (laptop, phone, etc.), sometimes the devices cannot connect to the internet wirelessly. When this happens, I would have to turn off and turn on the laptop's or phone's Wi-Fi and it will immediately work. This only happens on all my wireless devices because anything connected to the router via cable does not experience this issue. Anyone have a solution? Thanks.

Sound like you're possibly having a radio signal problem.  Did you possibly just acquire a new wireless phone?
Try logging on to the router and select the wireless tab and change the channel your router is broadcasting on.

  • I cannot connect to wireless from Ipad when I could 2 days ago.  Still can connect to same wireless from other PC.  What settings do I need to check?

I recently cannot connect to my neighbors wireless with my Ipad.  I can connect with my PC.  I feel like I have shanged a setting by accident but do not know where to start to correct this.  I have the password to the account.

Are you receiving the signal? Do you see the white "fan" WiFi indicator in the upper left corner of the iPad screen?
Go to Settings>WiFi> and see if the network name is showing on the iPad. If the name is showing, you can try this ...
Tap on the network name, then tap on the blue arrow next to the network name and then tap Forget this Network. Restart your iPad then go to the settings again, tap WiFi - tap on the network name - enter the password and see if you can connect again.
Normally I would suggest unplugging the router for about 30 seconds and then plug it in again, but this is your neighbor's WiFi? Does he know you are using his WiFi access? If so, what a great guy!
Here is how to restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
