Cannot connect iChat to PC Webcam

I know this seems to be a common problem but it is driving me up the wall. I have a G5 iMac 24" with built in iSight and my brother (in Ireland) has a Logitech webcam installed. We have both set up AIM accounts and can text live online etc but when we invite each other for a video chat it just crashes. I have had look on apple's site and it starts mentioning changing ports etc...admittedly a bit out of my depth...any quick fixes or step by steps instructions would be greatly appreciated. Oh and my router is a Netgear (Wireless from Sky).

Hi Tony, Thanks for prompt reply. I changed the seetings you suggested but when I click the video icon the screen that shows myself just freezes and gives a message "Peter Reilly (my brother) has declined your invitation". I think I have done everything correctly and it is something at his end, I did forget to mention he is on a PC but we have connected (buddies etc) and can live text but it is just when we attempt video chat. I have seen a few suggestions that it may be something to do with his router (port settings and NAT router get mentioned a lot). Do appreciate any more light you could throw on this.

  • Ichat cannot change server setting, cannot connect

iChat cannot connect. Read it somewhere that I should change server setting from 5190 to 443 after logging out. But the server setting will auto and immediately change back to 5190. Won't let me change to 443. Please help. Thank you.

    Hi,
"Safe" is a relative term here.
iChat, when you restart it will recreate them.
com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist (or the Jabber one) only hold the Login details and will force a fresh login to the relevant server.
com.apple.ichatAgent.plist This holds surprising little info.  Mainly it holds the info order for the iTunes is Playing script (Artist, Album and Track etc.).  It holds the default Idle time (and then of course if you are Idle)
As iChatAgent actually does the login is hold pointers to the other .plists.
com.apple.ichat.SubNet.plist  Holds the Bonjour info (or rather where to get it in the Address Book).
The Status Messages one does what it says.  It will hold all the Status Messages you have Created and decided to Keep.
com.apple.ichat.plist  This holds everything else.  Everything in the Preferences accept the Account Pane.
SOme of the Menu Items depending which window is Front.
Examples.  The Sort Order of your Buddy listt from the View Menu (when the Buddy List is "front". This can be a 2 pass setting (As in Avaible and Alphabetical). The capabilities shown in the Connection Doctor. (Video Menu).
It does hold a list of all the account you have in the Preferences  and some info is then pulled to Display the Accounts in the iChat Menu and the Buddy List windows in the Window Menu
Most important it holds the default or other Font you chose in Messages in the Preferences, whether that font is Coloured, the colour of the IM Background (Balloons or other style).  (Which Style form the View Menu > Messages). Whether you are saving transcripts of the Text Chats, and in iChat 5 what part of an old chat it displays.
If you were using Incoming Overrides you lose that setting.
All your Alerts settings both Globally set in Preferences > Alerts and those set in a Buddy's Info Card
    I could probably list more.
If you have a problem then it pays to tackle the .plist one at a time so that you know which one "Fixed" it.
Deleting them all in one go is often too heavy handed.
When I have a clear idea as to which one may be causing the issue I will list that one only.

  • FaceTime does not connect, iChat video does not work, Skype video does not work (LION)

    Hi everyone,
    I am using OS X 10.7.3 2011 Macbook Pro 2.2 Ghz Intel Core I7 8GG 1333MHz DDR3 RAM 500GB HD.
What happens when I try to call someone in FaceTime: Webcam light is on and I see myself on my screen. It rings and after a while it says "X is not available for FaceTime (or similar).
In iChat I can text chat, but video calls do not work. In Skype, I can do audio talking, but when I try to use my video, it fails to connect.
This seems to indicate to me that there is a system-wide, rather than user or program-specific problem, in which my system cannot connect to others when using my webcam.
Can anyone offer any guidance on this matter? I am pretty tech savvy. On my home network I have tried port forwarding/opening and all that, without luck. I am worried that maybe I could have made a mistake in terminal or something some time ago, but I don't go in there very often and it is usually for very specific things.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am moving away for four months, and I really need this to work so that I can chat with my lovely girlfriend. Please see the notes below prior to commenting.
    Cheers
    Notes:
Internet is working fine. I use three different network, one of which is wired and works fine.
I have tried to create new users, still no luck
    Webcam works fine in PhotoBooth
I am logged into FaceTime properly (this is simple, right?)
Reinstalling OS X to fix this problem is not an option
I have tried FaceTime with several people with several devices (e.g., iPad, iMac, iPhone)
FaceTime on my iPhone works with other people on same network

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Cannot Connect To Server

I am running multiple services with the latest version of OS X Server (10.6.8) on my MacMini (web, vpn, mail, ichat, ical, address book, etc.) .
Everything has been working fine for the last year and no changes have been made to the server, settings, ISP, or DNS, with the exception of installing the latest system software updates. Now, when I try to open my websites or connect remotely via VPN I get a "cannot connect to sever" message.  All other services are still working as they should. The server is hooked up to an Airport Extreme via a cable modem with a static IP.
I have tried the following thus far:
    1) checked all cables and they are plugged in and seated properly.
    2) restarted the server, airport extreme, and cable modem
    3) turned Web services off and on again in Server Admin
    4) checked the DNS via the web and my site addresses are pointing to my static IP address
    5) checked the Airport's port mapping to make sure Web Service was still on
    6) checked my websites SSL certificate to make sure it's current and enabled
    7) tried disabling SSL
    8) created and enabled a new self-signed SSL certificate
    Recent log activity shows:

I'm assuming the "key.pem' does not exist or is empty" part is the issue, but I am a novice and have no idea what that means.
Any idea what's causing the problem??? ...I really need to get my websites back up and running! Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

No solution offered ...had to do a system software re-install to resolve the problem.

  • Connect iChat to TV

    Hi everyone...
is there any way to connect ichat video to TV with or without apple TV?
If yes could you tell me how to do that and requiriments I need?
    Thanks

    OK, Ben.

You can download a copy of the manual for your particular iBook by optionClicking on the link for one of these manuals:
iBook G4 (Mid 2005) User's Guide (Manual), or
iBook G4 (Late 2004) Getting Started (Manual)
If you do not know which G4 iBook you have, I suggest you download both and look at the pictures to select the appropriate manual.
Regardless of which is for your iBook, Chapter 3 contains instruction for connecting to a TV and for using your Headphone port for connecting to audio. Instructions are very similar for either G4 iBook version.
If you cannot find help with the downloaded manual either, you can get a start by clicking on these web links:
Connecting a television to use as a display,
Changing your display settings when connected to a TV, and
Setting up multiple displays as an extended desktop
If you need connectors, cabling, or additional help, I suggest you see your local Apple retailer or computer equipment dealer. He can supply any hardware you may need and answer any questions you have about the information in the links above.

    Just to be clear.
AIM stands for AOL Instant Message.  So an AIM Password is an AOL Instant Message password.
An Apple ID issued by Apple (@mac.com and iCloud issued @me.com and @icloud.com  ending IDs) can also be valid AIM Screen Names
In the past the password at Apple had to comply with the AIM limit of 16 characters.
I have seen a recent post that suggests that this limit may have changed.
Try logging in here if the Name was registered at AIM or is an @mac.com name

(You cannot log in here with an @iCloud.com or @me.com ending ID as there are addtional checks in iChat 6 and upwards that invloved logins to both Apple And AIM at the same time to confirm access to the password).

  • Upgraded to Mavericks and cannot connect AIM to Messages

I recently upgraded to Mavericks and decided to try out the Messages app for instant messaging for the first time.
For some reason, I cannot connect my AIM accounts to work with Messages even though they have always worked perfectly fine through Adium. Everytime I've tried to do so I get the message - An unknown error occured.
Having never used Messages before, I have no idea if this is a common thing. Has anyone had the same experirence since upgrading?

  • Cannot connect to internet using apple applications

    Hi,
I cannot connect to the internet using these apple applications: Safari, Software Update, iTunes.
I can connect to the internet using Firefox and iChat.
I have just reinserted my OSX 10.4 discs and reinstalled the software (making an archive and using my old settings choice). But it still doesn't work.
Why won't apple applications connect to the internet?

    Lisa W wrote:
I just updated to 10.4.11 and tried to run my brand new Safari 3. NO GO.
I'm having a much smaller problem (just accessing certain sites) which I think may have begun with 10.4.11. I'd agree that you might want to try launching the disk utility and repairing permissions. Then you may want to run Software Update again and see if it finds other updates that may be required. Sometimes after a revision patch application, especially if you don't apply patches soon after their release, there are other applications and stuff which need to be updated after you've run the initial update. It's not a typical thing, but it does happen on occasion.
The only time I've really had a problem with an update was, I believe, 10.4.9... I think I let Software Update do it's job, but wasn't ready to save and quit an open document or two, so just did something I'd done before, without issue... I "force-quit" Software Update. This was not an advisable move, as it turned out. Indeed, I think that time, after staying up all night trying to suss out the problem, was when I found a couple other people who'd had similar issues with the update because it required a second re-start after patch application. In my sleep-deprivation-induced state of temporary insanity I selected a user name which I now find rather embarrassing... I don't remember picking "MacCrackHead", actually... LOL ... but that's another story.
If you have an external drive that you've backed up your system install to, you may be able to boot off of it and see if things work normally (as I did when I moved from 10.4.8 to 10.4.9 and had the issues)... Ultimately I ended up making a second back-up of my external back-up and running the 10.4.9 update offline. It went well, so I cloned my back-up back to my normal start-up. I can't remember now what the issue was then, but it was pretty problematic for me.
My routine, when I see an important update available is now:
    1) Don't update when Software Update finds something;
    2) Save my work and close all applications.
    3) (Recommended): Bring my back-up clone of my start-up drive up-to-date.
    4) Run software update.
    5) Restart when it tells me to (required for many updates, and all system version updates)
    6) Run software update again on re-boot to see if there's anything else that follows... (usually none)
    7) Run disk utility and repair permissions.
Good luck resolving your issue, Lisa.

    Hi,
In previous iChat versions when the OS came on a DVD disk it was possible to install just iChat.
It is  a shame now that the only recourse is to reinstall the whole OS.
It is also seemingly more difficult to track issues in Messages compared to iChat.
Hopefully the Restore will help the situation.

  • Cannot connect to 1 Ghz G4 Flatpanel on home intranet or from INTERNET.

    Here is the set up:
    1) Powerbook G4 Aluminum running Leopard 10.5.1
    2) White iMac Dual Corp Intel running Leopard 10.5.1
    3) 1 Ghz Flatpanel G4 iMac running Leopard 10.5.1
Items 1 thru 3 are HOME networked using an ACTIONTEC DSL modem which distributes intranet addresses WIRELESSLY to all computers running Airport band B/G. DSL service is per Qwest.
    4) White iMac Dual Corp Intel running Leopard 10.5.1 wireless on Office network behind firewall with appropriate ports opened and directed to target computer at home.
    PROBLEMATIC BEHAVIOR.
Prior to upgrade from Tiger, I could remote in from the office using both my desktop, or my laptop which I never have online at the same time since they share the same fixed internal IP address. This could view and control the one targeted computer behind the DSL Modem/wireless router at home. When at home, with the laptop or using the intel iMac, I could use ARD to monitor/view and control any computer in the home intranet.
Once upgraded to Leopard, ARD still works from the office into the home for the intel dual core desktop machine. However, I cannot connect to the flat panel G4 desktop AT ALL. It is visible on my list of computers and shows available (or sometimes Screen sharing avialable). It will not allow me to view with screen sharing over iChat either.
Solutions tried: just about everything I can find on this website / discussion list. Nothing works to bring this flat panel G4 online. And, other than remoting in when away from home to help my wife with her desktop, the G4, used by my teen boys, is the machine I really need to surveil.
Does any guru out there think that an uninstall reinstall of ARD files would help?
    I need this solved definitively.
    Thanks

PS: Yes, ports are open at home and at work. From inside the intranet at home I can see the G4 domed base mac but not connect. If I reconfigure the ports to target the computer from the internet it demonstrates the same behavior: I can see it listed as available but msg: Cannot connect is returned.
Sorry if that was unclear to begin with.

  • Macbook Pro Cannot Connect to SMTP

I am running a 2010 MacBook Pro with OS X 10.6.8.  I use Mac Mail app to send and receive e-mail.  Since Thursday 27th Dec 2012 I have been unable to send e-mail.  I get the grey spinning wheel until the following error message appears:
The SMTP connection to server “mail.(mydomain).co.uk” failed.
My outgoing mail server is currently showing as offline.  In fact I have 2 e-mail accounts and both are showing as offline.  No problem receiving mail.  Connection doctor connects fine to incoming mail, but not outgoing.
I have tried the following (plus other things) without any success:
Checked all the details, passwords etc
Changed ports from 25 to 465 and 587
Checked my IP address - it is not blacklisted
    Removed and re-added e-mail account
Telnet port 25 - it is not blocked, but appeared to successfully connect (from what I understood from checking www)
    Temporarily disabled firewall
    Re-installed Mac app
    Rebuilt mailbox
    Repaired disk permissions
    Used the repair disk utility
Deselected SSL and changed various options within "Edit SMTP server list"
    Reset the keychain
Tried updating software but it says no update available.
Re-instated an old Accounts.plist (and one other file which I forget, something like com.apple.mail) from time capsule.
I then set up a hotmail account on Mail app but had exactly the same problem, ie cannot connect with SMTP server.
However, I set up my e-mail account on my wife's iPad with the same details and there was no problem at all, e-mail sent just fine as it does from my iPhone.  So the issue has to be with my Macbook, right?  Can anyone help before I go and spent £1250 on a new Macbook?  I'm sure I'm missing something obvious.  Thanks in advance for any advice.

Just FYI, I've had the same problem for months now. I have been accessing my hotmail via the web, but decided to try the OS X Mail app.  I could get emails into the account with no problem but couldn't send.  I read all the blog and support entries and have tried everything they recommended, like changing my computer name to one word, without success.  Then last night, it just so happened that my broadband provider had to change out my wireless modem.  As soon as he plugged in the new one, some emails that had been in my outbasket for a month went through instantly and all of a sudden my Mail, both incoming and outgoing now work.  So I think people need to look at their router settings for the a solution to the problem.
