  • Cannot see hard drives on airport extreme

Recently I cannot see hard drives on the network that are connected through Airport Extreme . The airport Extreme can see the drives, but the network cannot. I have not changed any settings that I know of. Only a reset of my macbook pro running Mavericks allows me to gives me access to the drives. Airport utility 6.3.2

+I will check when I get home. How do I do that?+
Connect the drive directly to a USB port on your Mac.
Then open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
Click on the drive in left hand panel and look for information at the bottom of the window about the disk
Your drive may be formatted as Windows NFTS. If that's the case, you will need to reformat the drive to work at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme. Be sure to copy any data that you need to another drive (maybe twice to be sure) before you do this as the reformat will erase all data on the drive.
When you are ready, click the Erase tab and then select MS-DOS (FAT) as the format so both PCs and Macs will be able to read the files.
Then copy a small test file back over to the FAT drive and plug the drive into the USB port on the AirPort Extreme. Restart everything on your network starting with the modem first, then device attached to the modem, etc.
On you Mac, open Macintosh HD and check to see if your AirPort Extreme icon appears under the SHARED heading on the left side of the window. If so, click the icon and folder will appear to the right representing your drive. Double click this folder to reveal the contents and mount the drive on your desktop. You should see your test file. Make sure it is operable..music plays, video works, etc.
Sorry, I haven't used Windows in 3-4 years and cannot remember how to access drives, but I would start with My Computer and start poking around. You want to verify that your PC can access and play the files as well.
If everything is OK,you can copy all your backup files back onto the USB drive attached to the AirPort Extreme. Keep the extra backup copy handy for awhile, just in case as well.

  • Can i connect hard drive to airport extreme in bridge mode

I just bought a hard drive and want have it connected to my airport extreme which is in bridge mode so that I can use it with U verse. Will I be able to backup my files on my macbook without connecting the usb on the hard drive to the macbook itself?

Will I be able to backup my files on my macbook without connecting the usb on the hard drive to the macbook itself?
This all depends on what you mean by backup your files.
Apple does not support Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme, so if you are planning to use Time Machine, the better strategy would be to connect the drive directly to your Mac.
If you want to drag/drop or copy/paste regular data files to the hard drive, that should work OK
Remember that the drive should be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as most store bought drives will come pre-formatted for Windows NTFS.
The USB port at the AirPort Extreme is under powered, so you almost always have to use a powered USB hub with a hard drive here....even if the drive has its own power supply.

  • Can not connect to drive on airport extreme n after sleep

When I put my MacBook to sleep without disconecting HD I can not connect to it. I get a server not available message. I have to reboot airport extreme. Any suggestion?

There's at least three discussions on this. The problem is that when your computer goes to sleep, there is a possibility that your router will renew DHCP and your IP number will change. This causes the drive to disconnect in a bad way and it will not reconnect. The default setting on the router is only 4 hours so some people have tried setting the number really high to fix the problem however this is not totallly reliable.
    Reliable Fix:
Assign static IP numbers for all computers that use the hard drive. You can either do this by going to the DHCP tab and entering MAC numbers for each machine under the "reserve IPs" option, or you can do it the old fashioned way by configuring each computer in network preferences with a static IP number.
For my network, I am configuring this on the computers for non portable hardware and using the "reserve" option on the router for portables.
If you use your air disc while away from home on a network where you do not have this sort of control over assigning IP numbers then don't let your computer sleep without first disconnecting the drive.

  • Can I connect cd drive to airport extreme

CAn I connect my apple cd drive to the USB port on the airport extreme?

Unfortunately, if you try this, it will not work because the USB port on the Airport Extreme will only support a compatible printer and/or a hard drive.

  • Cannot connect to receiver using AirPort Extreme due to password protection

I have a new AirPort Extreme and Harman Kardon receiver. I am trying to connect the HK receiver to my home network, after entering in all the necessary info (IP, subnet mask etc) I still cannot connect to internet radio, Pandora etc. I called HK and they say it is because my home network is password protected. They recommend I disable to the password and keep it without a password. Is this the only option I have?

There is no reason to do this if your HK receiver cannot connect using wireless, as appears to be the case here.  You must have misunderstood the HK support person, or they misunderstood you when you spoke with them.
The information in the manual only talks about a wired Ethernet connection.  There is no information that I can find that would indicate that the HK Receiver will be able to connect to the wireless network using wireless.
Unless you can provide another link that would indicate otherwise, you will need to plan to connect the HK receiver using a wired Ethernet cable, or use a pair of EOP adapters to send the signal over the AC wiring in your home.
It would also be possible to use an AirPort Express to connect to the AirPort Extreme over wireless by locating the AirPort Express near the HK receiver and then in turn connecting a short Ethernet cable from the AirPort Express to the HK receiver.

  • Cannot connect to an encrypted Airport Extreme

I bought an Airport Extreme router (big one) and an Airport base station (small; looks like a power adapter.) When i configured the base station for encryption under WEP it connected perfectly, when I placed these same settings to the Airport Extreme router, it would not connect to the internet (it will connect with the router). It will connect however when the base station is unencrypted. (It seems the problems start when I encrypt.) I tried WEP, WPA, WPA2, etc. I can connect to the router, but there is not internet. Another hint is when I try to launch the Airport Admin Utility, the program freezes.

Setup the Airport Extreme (AEBS) how you want it, using WPA would be a better choice than WEP for example.
Hard reset the Airport Express (AX).
    Wait five minutes
Connect to the AEBS wireless network.
    Run
Applications > Utilities > Airport Setup Assistant
    Configure a new base station.
Configure the new AX to join your existing wireless network.

  • Blu Ray player cannot connect to Gateway with airport extreme

I have a Samsung bluray player which is plugged into an airport express. The blu ray cannot find the gateway and cannot connect to the internet. The same airport express is also used as airtunes and works just fine on the network. How do I find the correct gateway information to enter?

Temporarily, turn off the wireless on a laptop and connect the laptop to the AirPort Express using an Ethernet cable. Can the laptop get an Internet connection?
If yes, the BluRay player should auto configure itself the same way to connect.
If no, the Express is not delivering an Internet connection at the Ethernet port and more troubleshooting will be required before you can connect the BluRay player.

  • HT4259 My old Airport Extreme cannot connect to the new Airport Extreme (Base) after I upgraded to the 7.7.1. firmware.

The old extreme was working as part of the extended network when the New Extreme Base it had the 7.7. version, now amber just blinks away.
I tried hooking up an Airport Express and have the same problem.
    Any pointers?

Ensure that the ethernet is connected to the WAN port (with the dotted circle).
You may have to reset and reconfigure your Airport Extreme.

  • Can you connect a USB drive to Airport Extreme or an Airport base for TM

Would like to backup MacBooks in 2 different scenarios with Time Machine. One is a USB external drive attached to Airport Extreme and the other is doing the same with an Airport base. Will both work? Also, I have been partitioning the direct USB attached hard drives so that I have a Time Machine partion and a copy of the internal hard drive. This allows my kids to boot from the external drive and still work in case the internal drive has failed or becomes corrupted. So far we have experienced 3 internal drive failures, one during finals and this has saved them. Can you boot from an external drive copy of the internal drive if it is connected to either an Airport Extreme or Airport base?

I am confused as on another site I saw that the Time Machine backup to Airport Extreme was working than broken by an update in 2008, then fixed again by another update in Oct. 2008. So is it officially supported or not. I cannot say that I am impressed with Apple's documentation and updates to what is supported and what is not.
Kappy, I do not see the concern with partitioning a drive and then taking backups to one partition and having a Restore created copy of the hard drive in another. The drive is partitioned and that should keep one partition from overlaying the other. The windows world had used partioning successfully for many years. Apple does have a slick ability to boot from a copy of the OS which is on an external drive. It has saved my kids multiple times when something has gotten hosed up on the internal drive, including a Mac mini with a drive failure during dinal exams and two drive failures on a Macbook. It lets the kids access the internet and get theri work done albiet with a static copy of the OS taken some time in the past. My son was even able to copy to the external drive all of his documents, music and photos off the internal drive that would not boot. Of course he had not learned the value of Time Machine at that point.

  • How to connect a hard drive on Airport Extreme (second edition)

how to connect a hard drive on Airport Extreme (second edition)? Does it need a special format? It is now fromat on FAT32, but i don't see it ??

The USB port your Mac is high powered. The port on the AirPort Extreme is not.
So, it tends to be borderline as far as its ability to supply sufficient power to a hard drive...even if the hard drive has its own power supply.
Often, users...including me....need to use a powered USB hub when they attach any drive to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme.
You might want to give that a try. Double check to make sure that the drive is formatted in FAT32 as well, since Windows NTFS or exFAT will not work with the AirPort Extreme.
Powering down and restarting the entire network.....modem first, then router, etc.....is something that you would always want to do after any change or addition to a network.

  • Will Time Machine work with an external hard drive connected (via usb) to Airport Extreme?

Will Time Machine work with an external hard drive connected (via usb) to Airport Extreme?

Sorry, but this article is about 4 years old, and was printed based on preliminary information at the time.
The bottom line here is that Apple does not officially support Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme.
If it works for you, great.
You might want to review the Apple Support documents below, which are far more recent than the article you reference:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/15139.html
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2038
    It is supported.....
This is NOT correct. Please do not post false information on the forums.

  • Cannot see OS Extended-formatted drive on Airport Extreme in Finder

    *EDIT: solved

I just purchased two 500GB USB hard drives and am attempting to connect them to my AirPort Extreme Base Station. They are connected to the USB port of the AEBS via a powered USB hub.
When I turn them both on, the base station goes into a restart loop. That is, it continually restarts until I power off both drives. If I turn on just one drive, it doesn't reboot itself until I attempt to connect to the hard drive via the Finder, or the AirPort Disk Utility menu. It then goes into the restart loop.
I have just run the 7.1 update for the AEBS, and had this problem before and after the update. My problem seems to be different than most on these forums, but I'm hoping the solution is similar.

  • How to deactivate a shared Hard drive on Airport Extreme - keeps sleeping

was curious if anyone one knows how to temporally deactivate a shared Hard drive on Airport Extreme - keeps sleeping every 30mins and have to wait 12 second for the drive to spin up and wait for the beach ball to stop spinning. Getting really aggravating.... Thanks

The external harddrive is NTFS format and someone from apple told me that it would have to be reformatted to be seen by the Extreme -- Needless to say with 33% of the hard drive filled, I do NOT want to reformat.
Unfortunately, HDDs attached to the USB port of the AirPort Extreme, cannot be recognized by the AirPort if formatted in NTFS. If you do not wish to reformat this drive, you will either have to use a different drive or connect this drive to a Windows PC for sharing on the network.
The AirPort can only share drives formatted in HFS+ or FAT32.

  • Can't connect wireless device to airport extreme

I bought airport extreme router second hand and am connecting it to HP desktop windows 8.  All software is installed properly and router is connected.  I have a solid green light, and internet access on desktop, but cannot connect wireless devices to network (kindle, cell phone, etc.)  All wireless devices show excellent network signal strength, allow me to put the password in, but all show connected and have not internet access.

This appears to be a simple modem, so assuming that you reset the modem completely before you connected it to the AirPort Extreme, the next step would be to check to insure that the AirPort is in router mode and not bridge mode.
Open up AirPort Utility, click on the AirPort Extreme, and then click Manual Setup
Click the Internet icon at the top of the window
Click the Internet Connection tab just below that
Make sure that the setting for Connection Sharing is set to Share a public IP address
Click Update to save any changes, and give the AirPort a full minute to restart
Check the network again to see if devices can connect now.
