Cannot connect to internet using apple applications

Hi,
I cannot connect to the internet using these apple applications: Safari, Software Update, iTunes.
I can connect to the internet using Firefox and iChat.
I have just reinserted my OSX 10.4 discs and reinstalled the software (making an archive and using my old settings choice). But it still doesn't work.
Why won't apple applications connect to the internet?

I'm having a much smaller problem (just accessing certain sites) which I think may have begun with 10.4.11. I'd agree that you might want to try launching the disk utility and repairing permissions. Then you may want to run Software Update again and see if it finds other updates that may be required. Sometimes after a revision patch application, especially if you don't apply patches soon after their release, there are other applications and stuff which need to be updated after you've run the initial update. It's not a typical thing, but it does happen on occasion.
The only time I've really had a problem with an update was, I believe, 10.4.9... I think I let Software Update do it's job, but wasn't ready to save and quit an open document or two, so just did something I'd done before, without issue... I "force-quit" Software Update. This was not an advisable move, as it turned out. Indeed, I think that time, after staying up all night trying to suss out the problem, was when I found a couple other people who'd had similar issues with the update because it required a second re-start after patch application. In my sleep-deprivation-induced state of temporary insanity I selected a user name which I now find rather embarrassing... I don't remember picking "MacCrackHead", actually... LOL ... but that's another story.
If you have an external drive that you've backed up your system install to, you may be able to boot off of it and see if things work normally (as I did when I moved from 10.4.8 to 10.4.9 and had the issues)... Ultimately I ended up making a second back-up of my external back-up and running the 10.4.9 update offline. It went well, so I cloned my back-up back to my normal start-up. I can't remember now what the issue was then, but it was pretty problematic for me.
My routine, when I see an important update available is now:
1) Don't update when Software Update finds something;
2) Save my work and close all applications.
3) (Recommended): Bring my back-up clone of my start-up drive up-to-date.
4) Run software update.
5) Restart when it tells me to (required for many updates, and all system version updates)
6) Run software update again on re-boot to see if there's anything else that follows... (usually none)
7) Run disk utility and repair permissions.
Good luck resolving your issue, Lisa.

  • Cannot connect to Internet (using Safari)

    Hi all.
    I got my Macbook (unibody) for about 7 months ago. I have never had any problems with it, but now suddently Internet has stopped working. I am using only Safari. It just says "cannot connect to Internet" when i try get online. The weird thing is that Internet works to all other computers here at home, but not on mine. I have checked that all the cords are plugged in and all lights are on. I have tried using the internet cords for the other computers on my Mac, but they dont work. The cord i am using is working on other computers too, so there is nothing wrong with it. It is like my Mac doesn´t "recognize" that i have the cord plugged in. When i am on the systems settigns it says that everything is offline, and when i am on the Ethernet settings it does not have any IP adress written or anything, and i have chosen "Use DHCP".
    What should i do? I was watching a movie yesterday and had the laptop in my lap, maybe it got overheated or something? Or is it something wrong with the network card? Please help, this is so frustrating!

    For the past few days my Mac Mini has been having issues.
    Safari won't connect to internet, but Firefox does.
    Time and date are frozen. Only resets when copmuter is re-booted.
    Unable to update via App Store and iTunes won't connect either.
    Please advise.

    Hi again,
    Let me ask for some better help for you that is familiar with this problem (if in fact it is a similar problem with the IP address and your ISP.
    The other topic concerning this can be found at:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2725608
    It is a somewhat lengthy thread but may just apply to your situation.
    Anyways I will see if I can call on some better help for you. Hang in there. Best to arm yourself with enough info before contacting Comcast so they might know what you are dealing with fully.

    edit: I have posted for some extra help for you that may have a better idea of what's going on if it is your ISP and their modem and how it handles the IP address causing Safari and iTunes not to connect. Hang in there it may take awhile but I'm sure someone will pop in to help.

  • 9300 Curve wifi problem - cannot connect to internet using only wifi once data turned off

    I've got a 9300 Curve with a data plan from Rogers. I want to use my wifi in hotspots when I go overseas without using my data. I have no problems connecting to wifi networks. Once I turn off my data services, my connections to the wifi network show that the signal is still just as strong, but I can't use my browser, facebook, bbm, etc. - message is "unable to connect to internet" when I try and access my browser. This problem occurs whether I'm using a public hotspot or my home router. I used to be able to access wifi without using data from Rogers on my older Curve (can't remember the model), so I don't think it has anything to do with my plan.
    Any suggestions/advice would be much appreciated!

    Thanks for the reply!
    Did you mean "leave data ON and turn off data roaming"? But that would just turn off my data while I'm roaming, and while I'm not roaming, it'll still access through data and not through wifi like I would prefer. That's what I understand, but pls correct me if I'm wrong! I guess I meant to also mention that whether I'm in my home zone or overseas, I still can't use my browser, bbm, etc through wifi only, with data turned off...it just says there's no connection to the server/internet, even though it shows that I'm connected to a wifi network.

  • Airport extreme: my macbook, cannon wireless printer, ipad and iphone cannot connect to internet when Apple Tv and/or PS3 is connected

    Please help!  I have an Airport Extreme (model A1143) as my router, and I have several devices connected to it wirelessly and wired.  I have my Macbook, Macbook Pro, iPad 1, iPhone 4S, HTC Thunderbolt, Cannon wireless printer, and Apple TV (gen 1) connected wirelessly.  I have my PS3, an external hard drive and DirecTV connected via ethernet cable (but sometimes my PS3 is also connected wirelessly).
    I began to notice a few months back that my wireless printer had connection errors and could not print.  And I noticed soon after that, from time to time, the internet connection on my Macbook and iPad was extremely slow, to the point that I could not surf the web.  I tried several different printers before realizing that this problem was happening only when I had my PS3 turned on.  I tried both PS3 wirelessly and wired, but the problem persisted.  I figured it was a problem with the PS3, so I just made sure that PS3 is off when I need to use the wireless in the house.  But I recently bought an ATV (gen 1) and also noticed the same problem when it was connected to the Airport Extreme (wirelessly) - i.e., Ican't print, and my internet is super super slow on macbook, ipad, etc.
    So, it must be that my Airport Extreme is the problem, not the PS3 or the ATV.  Is there anything I can do to fix this (i.e., some setting that has to be changed)?  Or do you think that my Extreme is just dying out on me and it's time for a replacement (I bought it about 5 years ago)?

    This problem, for reasons unknown to me, has resolved itself on its own. After several attempts finally everything decided to work. How does stuff like this happen? Thank you.

  • Cannot connect to internet using Airport

    I am having difficulty connecting my new Airport express to the internet.  Everything connects fine modem>Airport (WAN) and then back to my computer (LAN) and I get a green light on the Airport but when I open the safari browser it says I do not have an internet connection.

    Hello mfort77. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
    It's always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle whenever you change network configurations.
    Try the following, in order, checking for Internet access after each step, until resolved:
    1. If the modem has a reset switch, use it to reset the modem. Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the modem to initialize.
    2. Remove power from the modem. If it has a backup battery, remove this as well. Wait 5-10 minutes. Replace the battery, and add power back to the modem.
    3. Perform a complete power recycle of your network components as follows:
    Modem/Router Power Recycling - Quick
    o Power-off the modem, 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), & computer(s); Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
    If this fails to get the modem to "recognize" the Internet router, then try the "Full" version.
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling - Full
    o Power-off the modem, AEBSn, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
    o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 15 minutes.
    o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
    4. Contact your ISP to have them perform a "modem reset."

  • Cannot connect to internet using XP

    Hi,
    i read the threads below but none helped me.
    I manage to connect to the internet with Mac OS X, but not with XP.
    I use wireless and it finds the wireless connection but doesn't manage to connect to the internet because it says the connection is too low.
    Can you help me?

    in os x, go into system prefs> network> click airport, then configure. check the settings here, specifically if you are using a manual ip address (i'm assuming you aren't) and if there are any pppoe settings entered. in win xp, go to control panel> network connections> right click your wireless connection and go to properties. there will be a box with 3 or 4 settings in it, look for the one that says tcp/ip (can't remember the exact phrase since I'm in os x right now). if you didn't have anything specific for your ip in os x, make sure that everything is set to automatic.
    as for the router, this will depend on the brand of router you're using. to find your router's gateway, in os x go to the network section in your system prefs again, and go into the airport config. the gateway will be listed next to "router" in the tcp/ip tab. write this number down, and enter it in your browser's address bar. you will now be logging into your router's setup (check your router's lit. to find the password and login name). this part is very dependant on your brand of router, and if you don't know exactly what you're doing, don't change anything. I would suggest just checking that there is nothing obvious that would be blocking your windows connection. you can also log into xp and log into your router just to see if you can get to the setup page. if you can, there are conflicting setting with your isp, so you'd need to contact them. if not, try reinstalling your wireless drivers.
    good luck

  • Cannot connect to internet using wireless airport on my iMAC

    I am running Leopard on my iMac and less than a week ago I was able to connect to the internet by wireless airport express. Now it says that my airport is working and connected but when I open Safari, I only get a partial url load and then it freezes and eventually after about 3-5 minutes it gives me a "You are not connected to the internet". I recently installed updates and I believe that after that is when it stopped working. After hours of troubleshooting research on the internet, I've tried creating a new network, editing the location from Automatic to a new one, simply shutting down and unplugging for a couple of minutes and plugging back in and rebooting for example and nothing has worked. Does anybody have any thoughts that could help me get back up and running again?
    Thanks!

    Even though your profile does NOT show you updated to 10.5.2 I suspect you did by the way you are talking. The problem with 10.5.2 is in an extension file ( which is really a folder ) it is the root to the wi-fi problems. I will be posting a fix 1-2 days. In the mean time you should download a program called Pacifist Vers. 2.5.2. The trial version will work but I suggest you pay the $20 shareware because he earn it and if my feelings are correct about Apple you will need it again.

  • Cannot connect to p6ws using demo application

    Hi everyone,
    I started a few days ago to take some interest in Primavera p6 as a was asked to connect to an existing Primavera P6 server. First of all I wanted to do a standalone installation and see what was this about...
    Well, I was provided with some information about the current primavera P6 version that was being used, (Release 7) so I started to download the Primavera P6 project management.
    So far so good, I installed it using SQL Server and (after a few tries) i succeeded in login into the program.
    After some reading I decided to use Primavera P6 web services as the way to connect my system to the current Primavera P6 system. So I willingly downloaded the P6 Webservices module and Weblogic 10g R3 (recommended version in the administrator guide pdf).
    After downloading both files I installed without much trouble Primavera P6 Web services and I linked it to the pmdb database in my system successfully (or at least it says so) and right after that I installed Weblogic 10g R3 in production mode in my system aswell. I created a new domain called test_primavera.
    I managed to start Weblogic using "startWeblogic.cmd" script existing in weblogichome/user_projects/domains/bin folder.
    The problems begin now...
    I follow up all the steps described in the administrator guide and I try to launch the p6ws.war existing in the previously installed p6webservices_1 folder in my system.
    The first problem I found is that Weblogic is not able to finde a class named CXFServlet as it jar is not located in the classpath. Well I've checked my %CXF_HOME% environment variable and it was ok (otherwise I would not be able to install P6 WebServices and I tried manually to add %CXF_HOME% folder to the classpath with no result. Checking the startWeblocig.cmd log I discover that Weblogic is always looking for classes in the already deployed war folder which in my case is "C:\weblogichome\user_projects\domains\test_primavera\servers\AdminServer\tmp\_WL_user\p6ws\nmdpik\war\WEB-INF\lib" and no matter what I did it always looked for those classes in that folder. In a desperate attempt I copied all the jars from the %CXF_HOME%/modules folder into that folder and found a new error, Outofmemoryerror PermGenSpace.
    I managed to fix this error playing with the memory variables and I finally managed to launch the p6ws war in my system (yay!!).
    I am now able to go open the browser (http://mycomputer:7001/p6ws) and I see what I think is the primavera p6 webservice activated. But I cannot use the p6wsdemo.jar to connect to the server it always says "Demo failed. Please check if the server is running and try again." I configured the authentication using Username token profile and I've tried the 3 users I know in the system (pubuser, privuser and admin).
    I have tried also to create a small program to login in the system but with no result aswel, here is the code
    private static boolean testLogin()
              URL wsdlURL = null;
              try {
                   wsdlURL = new URL("http://mycomputer:7001/p6ws/services/AuthenticationService?wsdl");
              } catch (MalformedURLException e) {
                   // TODO Auto-generated catch block
                   e.printStackTrace();
              AuthenticationService service = new AuthenticationService(wsdlURL);
              AuthenticationServicePortType servicePort = service.getAuthenticationServiceSOAP12PortHttp();
              BindingProvider bp = (BindingProvider)servicePort;
              boolean success = false;
              try {
                   success = servicePort.login("admin", "admin", 1); // <- Line 119
              } catch (IntegrationFault e) {
                   // TODO Auto-generated catch block
                   e.printStackTrace();
              return success;
    When I try to run this program I always get the following error:
    Information: Creating Service {http://xmlns.oracle.com/Primavera/P6/V7/WS/Authentication}AuthenticationService from WSDL: http://mycomputer:7001/p6ws/services/AuthenticationService?wsdl
    com.primavera.ws.p6.authentication.IntegrationFault: Fatal error: Could not initialize class com.primavera.integration.server.ServerFacade

         at p6webservice.testLogin(p6webservice.java:119)
         at p6webservice.main(p6webservice.java:71)
    Now I am completely stuck.
    I am working in a Windows 8 - 64 bit system using Primavera P6 Release 7 and Weblogic 10g R3. I have thought about installing everything in a Win xp 32 bit emulated system but I would like to avoid it. Any ideas?
    Any help would be great
    Thanks in advance!
    Regards
    PS: Sorry if my english causes you any trouble :)

    Try switching to HTTP Cookies for authentication. This is a simpler method and usually works well with .Net.
    Also, you should be able to call the ReadDatabaseInstances without logging in to test if the web service is returning values.

    We're trying to watch a movie using our Apple TV. It is saying "cannot connect to internet?"  WE thought it was because we just got a new computer, so i went through the process of downloating i-tunes all over again...yet we still have the problem. ??? PLease help

    Linda
    What exactly has changed?
    Just the computer, other things?
    More information on your actual setup is needed -  Particularly how things are connected on the local network and to each other.
    In theory the new computer should not affect Apple TV's ability to rent and play a movie if the rental was made on the AppleTV itself.  The problem may have nothing to do with the new computer unless changes have been made on the router to let it connect and it's caused AppleTv to disconnect, or the PC has been assigned the AppleTV's IP address which is no longer available to AppleTV hence it thinks it's lost connection.
    Try powering off the router, restarting and see if the AppleTV internet connection returns. Restart AppleTv too if needed. Check any ethernet cable connections or wi-fi settings on AppleTV if it doesn't re-establish the internet connection.  By the way an ethernet cable plugged into AppleTV will disconnect it's wi-fi connections.

    Have disabled IE on windows pc and am using Firefox as browser. iTunes now says cannot connect to internet even though Firefox working: suggestions?

    There is a plugin for Firefox - see here
    http://latestversionplugin.com/current-version-plugin-itunes-application-detecto r.html
    It should be installed automatically if you install iTunes, but I guess when you installed iTunes you didn't have Firefox.  Just reinstall iTunes and it should work OK  (your iTunes library will not be affected)

  • I am not able to connect to internet using Firefox. I have Un-installed and reinstalled Firefox again, but still get the "Cannot find server" message. For now I'm using Internet Explorer but I would like to go back to using Firefox. Thanks.

    I lost connectivity to internet thru Firefox a while ago. Contacted my ISP and we tried many things before discovering it was a Firefox issue, not a modem or router or browser issue. Even after uninstalling/einstalling Firefox fresh, I still cannot connect to internet and get the "Unable to connect- Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at www.yahoo.com" message.

    A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
    Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.
