Cannot connect to Internet via newly created wireless network

Just purchased an Aiport Express router this week. Connected it to an RCA DCM425 Time Warner Cable modem and it worked fine out of the box. Now, after running the Airport Utility to create a new password-protected network, I cannot connect to the Internet. Both my PowerBook G4 (running Mac OS X 10.4.10) and Windows PC (XP SP2) can connect to the new network but then cannot access the Internet. After being frustrated for a few hours with this I performed a hard reset and then could connect to the default apple network the AX was transmitting. But now I tried creating a new network again and again the same problem. No internet access despite Network Status indicating otherwise. Please help! I purchased this product b/c I thought it was supposed to be an easier setup.

Welcome to Apple Discussions
Sorry, but the 169.x.x.x IP address is internally generated by the iPod (and iPhone) and indicates that a network has been detected but no IP address has been issued. Your friends iPhone was not connected to your ad hoc network either - it connected to the internet through the 3G network.
You should read through the Vista help screens on ad hoc networking for some insight how this works. You should be able to get some ideas there.
In the mean time, $40 or less will buy you a very capable wireless router with four Ethernet ports and will simplify your network tremendously. Having used Windows ICS for a long time, the addition of a router and a real network simplified things so much.

    Wi-Fi Setup Considerations
Things to consider before you begin
Start with a plan for the physical layout. Depending on whether you have an existing Wi-Fi network, or if you are using your AirPort Express as a standalone Wi-Fi device, there are several options available for you to choose from.
When using Ethernet, Cat6 cable is recommended.
The layout you choose should take into account environmental factors such as physical access, location, range, radio frequency interference, etc.
You will need to consider what AirPort Utility settings to adopt.
You will need to know whether you are using an AirPort Express (802.11b/g) or an AirPort Express (802.11a/b/g/n).
If you will be using more than one Wi-Fi base station, it may be helpful to read the article Extending the range of your wireless network by adding additional Wi-Fi base stations.

  • Mac connects but PC won't connect to internet via TIme Capsule wireless net

I have my personal Mac and work PC at home. I'm switching from a wireless network using my airport extreme base station to a new time capsule. Had no problems earlier, but now with my new wireless network I have the following problem:
    - Both Mac and PC are able to connect to my home wireless network created through Time Capsule
    - Only Mac can access the internet via the Time Capsule wireless network
    - PC connects fine to the wireless network, but the settings indicate the internet cannot be accessed
I've tried fiddling with configurations etc. but cannot seem to get the PC to connect through to the internet using my Time Capsule.
The PC will connect directly to the net if I plug in the ethernet from my cable modem....What's the problem? Any ideas?

Welcome to the discussions forum AZR-DC.
The PC will connect directly to the net if I plug in the ethernet from my cable modem...
Make it a habit to power down your modem whenever you connect something different to it. Merely detaching the AEBS and attaching your Time Capsule or your computer directly will confuse most modems, so leave it powered down for a few moments. Power down your other equipment while you're at it.
Then, power up all the equipment as follows:
Modem... wait a few moments for it to complete its startup sequence.
Time Capsule. Wait a few moments again.
    Computers.
Be sure your PC and your Mac are getting their addresses "via DHCP".

  • After most recent update (3.6.10) cannot connect to internet via any browser or application (Windows Vista)

I recently updated Firefox to 3.6.10 on a Windows Vista machine and have been unable to connect to the internet with any application since. Any help you can provide would be graciously appreciated.
Upon receiving the "Firefox has updated and needs to restart" message, I continued to browse the internet for a period of time. When I finished what I was doing, I restarted the browser. When it came back up, it failed to connect to the internet. Signal strength from wireless network is "Very Good" and indicates that I am connected to the internet. I have tried the following with no success:
    - Attempted to connect to internet with Internet Explorer
    - Restarted the machine
    - Disabled Windows firewall
    - Checked that Internet Options settings had not changed
    - Connected to different wireless networks
After each of the above, I tried to connect with IE and Firefox.
As an amateur it seems that this isn't a Firefox problem, but I have to assume since the connection was good immediately before restarting the program and the completely inoperative after restarting, that it has something to do with the installation. Thank you very much for your time.

    PROBLEM SOLVED:
In Internet Options under Connections > Settings, "Use system settings" was selected. Changing the selection to "Automatically detect proxy settings for this network" in connection settings allowed all applications to connect to the internet.
Why "System settings" continues to work on my XP system after the update and why it worked on the Vista system before the update but not after the update is a mystery... but as long as it works, who cares

  • Pc cannot connect to internet via airport

    Hi
I have an older Airport Extreme base station (round pyramid style) that is fine with my Mac (MacBook Air, iMac, iPad-2, iPhone 4+) and other wifi devices.
However, we also have various PC laptops (needed for work) that can connect to the Airport base station (PC= green line from pc to base, red line crossed through to internet Windows graphic) but NOT to the web (?)
We have high speed DSL, and a modem plugged directly into the base station.
How can I set Airport up or the PC laptops, so that the PC laptops can have access to the web and everything stays the same for all of my other stuff?
    Very behind in my work...

    Hi,
I believe you have the problem that I was able to correct last weekend on my son's pc laptop by updating the atheros wireless adapter drivers.  Here are two simple options to test if you need to get an updated driver for the pc wireless adapter.  The first is to just connect the laptop to the Airport Extreme with a network cable.  If that is not an option, enable the guest network with no security on the Airport Extreme and connect the pc laptop to the guest network.  If either method works, the wireless security method is the problem and a new driver was the solution.

  • Satellite A60: Cannot connect to internet via modem - no dial-up

In my Satellite A60, WinXP Home, when I try to connect to the Internet via the Toshiba modem, I get Error 6: invalid handle, and after some attempts I get Error 50: all devices connected / request not supported.
Device Manager / Network / RAS Async Adapter shows an error (black exclamation point on a yellow field).
The driver is asyncmac.sys = MS Remote Access serial network driver.
    I have:
    - tried to uninstall RAS Async Adapter, but no chance, says it may be necessary for boot-up
    - uninstalled / re-installed modem
    - updated winXP via windows update
    - updated bios / modem / network drivers from Toshiba
No luck, the RAS Async Adapter error is still there.
    Any suggestion?
    Thanks
    Alessio - Italy

I think this problem concerns Windows XP and RAS Async Adapter, not the modem.
The modem dials correctly the number, negotiates user and password, and then I get the error 6 and 50.
I found on the internet this tip to uninstall and re-install the RAS Async Adapter:
    http://forums.practicallynetworked.com/showthread.php?t=6781
I have followed the instructions and executed RArepair.exe.
It uninstalls and reinstalls the the RAS Async Adapter, but RAS is still in error (yellow field in Device manager).

  • Cannot connect to other computers on my wireless network

Since I upgraded to Mac OS X v10.7 Lion I cannot connect to my iMac or MacBook as a Registered User.  I keep getting "Connection Failed" when I try to connect.

If you are getting the error message that the server won't allow any more users to connect, and to try again later, this seems to be a problem with AFP sharing in Lion.
The workaround for this so far is to go to System Preferences > Sharing > File Sharing and click on Options...  On that window, turn OFF "Share files and folders using AFP" and turn ON "Share files and folders using SMB (Windows)" Click Done to go back to the sharing window and you should see a green dot followed by "Windows Sharing: On"
    Give that a try.

  • Macbook Pro cannot connect to Internet via Ethernet / Cosmetic Issues

My Wireless Router died last night, so I connected my PC Desktop directly to the Modem. It worked like a charm.
I then decided to connect my MacBook Pro (2.4GHZ, OS X 10.5.3) to the Modem and...it didn't work. I tried going into the network settings (turning off the AirPort Card, moving the Ethernet to the top of the list, etc.) and I still could not get it to work.
Aside from taking it in, is there anything that I can do to try to remedy the situation, maybe a setting that I've missed? Also, there is a tiny ding on front of the bottom case. Can I get it fixed if I have the "Accidental Insurance?"

Was the MBP working when you had the router?
Also, did you power cycle the modem when you switched machines?  Most cable modems remember the ethernet MAC address of the computer that was last connected to it, and will not permit another machine to connect until the unit is fully power cycled (turned off and back on).  This is to enforce network provider policies of one computer at a time per account.  (Most ISPs want extra money for extra machines.)  The reason you can use multiple machines with a router is because the router performs some special functions to make multiple machines appear as a single machine to the outside world.

  • Can't Get Sony PSP To Connect to Internet via my WRT54G Wireless Router

    Hi:
I hope someone can help who was able to do this.  I have tried everything and the PSP will not connect to my network.  I use WEP security and a MAC address filter.  I even turned both of these security features off and it still won't connect.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks,
    Paul

I have version 1.1, but it has the latest firmware revision 4.21.1 of January 30, 2007. The firmware notes state it supports up to hardware version 3.  So you think this router won't work with the PSP because it is too old?

  • Time Capsule connected to internet via ethernet and static IP address

Hi! I'm at my wits end and getting no help from my IT department. I want to use my Time Capsule to create a wireless network within my office. I can directly connect my TC to the internet via ethernet and an assigned static IP address. However, doing so I'm unable to connect to the internet using the created wireless network on my laptop. I've tried using the bridge option for sharing as well as the "sharing an IP address" and neither configuration is working. any thoughts?

I have the same setup; my ISP uses static IP only. No probs configuring a LinkSys router but with TC it's not obvious where to plug in the info. Can't ping the TC router via IP address to setup directly like the LinkSys which would be simple. Is the out of box router address really 10.0.1.1 on the LAN side? I want to use the 192.168 sequence and have changed it but still no success as I can't determine where to put the static IP! Can you give me something specific? By the way, it works fine thru the LinkSys router in Bridge mode.
    Thanks,

    Hello,
Though all of these steps may or may not be needed, I'm including them all.
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.5, 10.6, 10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
    If using Wifi/Airport...
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(There may be better or faster DNS numbers in your area, but these should be a good test).

  • Cannot connect to internet wirelessly

I have a Linksys WRT54GC Compact Wireless-G Broadband Router. I'm currently using it at home, via a wired connection. I have used it at home before just fine. I then took it to school and it worked there as well. But when I brought it home again I started having trouble.
    Home set up:
Phone line -> DSL modem -> router 1 -> my router -> my computer (and a PC and a TiVo).
I was not able to connect to the internet at all with my router in the mix (without it I could connect fine) and could see and connect to the router (wired and wireless). Linksys tech support was able to get me connect to the internet by having me plug the cable from the first router into the wired out #4. Does not make any sense to me but it works... for wired connections.
I can see my wireless network and connect to it, but haven't be able to access the router configuration page wirelessly (recently), and I don't get the internet wirelessly... on my PowerBook. However I can connect to the internet with my nintendo DS, so the problem seems to be with my computer.
Under my system preferences I get this when I'm connected through the routers wired connection:
    Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
    IP Adress: 192.168.2.100
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    DHCP Client ID: (If required)
    Router: 192.168.2.1
    DNS Servers: (Optional)
    Search Domains: (Optional)
    IPv6 Address: fe80:0000:0000:0000:020a:95ff:fee0:0a0c
    Ethernet ID: 00:0a:95:e0:0a:0c
At first when I connect via AirPort I get a whole lot of nothing:
    AirPort ID: 00:0a:95:f7:98:b8
    Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
    IP Adress:
    Subnet Mask:
    DHCP Client ID: (If required)
    Router:
    DNS Servers: (Optional)
    Search Domains: (Optional)
    IPv6 Address: fe80:0000:0000:0000:020a:95ff:fee0:0a0c
And then I get an AirPort assigned IP address:
    AirPort ID: 00:0a:95:f7:98:b8
    Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
    IP Adress: 169.254.191.42 (self-assigned)
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
    DHCP Client ID: (If required)
    Router:
    DNS Servers: (Optional)
    Search Domains: (Optional)
    IPv6 Address: fe80:0000:0000:0000:020a:95ff:fee0:0a0c
If I manually set the IPv4 to the same settings as the ethernet settings it still does not work. I don't know what to do. If you need more info to be able to help let me know.

The 169.254.191.42 (self-assigned) simply means it isn't getting a response from any DHCP server/router.
I don't think it's ging to work with the first router plugged into LAN#4. I "think" the problem is/was that router #2 was also trying to hand out DHCP, it should just be set to be a dumb hub, passing DHCP from the 1st one.
Some Routers also need to be set to share the Wired/Wireless ports.
Also, if you have both Ethernet and Wireless in use, the order of the interfaces in Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations is important, the top being used for Internet, but you can drag them into other positions in the list.
