Cannot connect to server -- going overseas so need to be able to connect...

I'm trying desperately to get used to Mail and to end up migrating there completely from Entourage (though I'm quite satisfied with it). I've tried sending things out there and it tells me about server connection problem. At some point I think I was told that there was a connection to servers but still no success in sending, either from my .mac account or my other email account (which I cannot setup at all because there's no connection to its servers either). I think there's something fundamentally wrong that I'm doing or missing. Can I be helped?

Although you're perfectly happy with Entourage, for some reason you desperately want to get used to Mail but are encountering all sorts of problems. Yes, there is something fundamentally wrong that you're missing. And yes, you can be helped. Stay with Entourage.

Place the iPod in Recovery mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes.

I am unable to connect to my Wi-Fi at home, but am able to connect at work.  Using my new iPad 4G with cellular and a Motorola SBG6580.  My iPad 3G Wi-Fi only connects just fine; the 4G just "spins the gear."

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • When I click on Update, the "Connecting to Server" runs and does not stop or seem to connect. What to do?

Recently I upgraded to Firefox 4. Since then, at least once a week, I get a message to update, but when I click on "update" a message "connecting to server" appears that runs and runs and nothing else happens. No update! I don't know what to do.

If you have problems with updating then best is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop
    * Firefox 4.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
    * Install the new version that you have downloaded

  • I get a "Connection Failed" message when I try to connect to a Windows 7 computer that I was able to connect to before.

I was able to connect to this Windows 7 computer before, I don't think anything happened, and then suddenly I couldn't.  I turned the firewall off and enabled everything that I could for sharing on the PC.  I can connect to the other PC on the network fine.  I have tried using the connect to server and all of the different ways to enter the address in.  When I ping the PC all of the responses are completely normal.  I'm on OS X 10.8.3 and the PC I'm connecting to is Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1.  If you need any more details I'll try to provide them, that's all I can think of right now.

I called Apple today... It turned out to be my modem/router.

    Hello,
I am able to connect my wireless keyboard to only one mac ...not able to connect to my other mac at work after disconnecting the first one ...any suggestions please
    thanks,

    Hello:
You will need to delete the keyboard from the other Mac.  Simply disconnecting it leaves it still paired with the first Mac.

  • Software update doesn't take; connecting to server goes on without end.

I get the prompt to update FF, but when the software update screen comes on, it indicates "downloading Firefox" and shows "connecting to the update server," but it never seems to connect. I've let it run for quite a while (15 mins) and it just keeps showing that it's connecting.

    See:
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Software_Update (Software Update not working properly)
Remove the files in the updates and updates\0 folder.<br />
You may need to delete active-update.xml and updates.xml as well if present.
    C:\Documents and Settings\&lt;user&gt;\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox\updates
    (%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox)
If you have problems with updating then best is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version.<br />
You need to remove the Firefox program folder to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    * Firefox 4.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
    * Do not remove personal data if you uninstall the current version.
    * It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder] and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

  • Sporadic issue: connections to server going to SYN_RECV state

    Hello all,
I am facing this sporadic issue with my rmi server for the past few months. I have tried searching the internet world for any help but did not come across any solution that’s of help. Any help from you on this would be much appreciated!
Our rmi server is accessed by 100-200 clients at any point in time. 99% of the times, the server just works fine except suddenly it kind of hangs i.e., no new connections can be made from clients. The connection attempts from clients fail with error "SocketTimeOutException: read timed out" and on the server, the tcp connections are observed to be in SYN_RECV state (from netstat output). Server is running on Redhat linux and clients could run on any of windows, linux and mac. The frequency of the issue is random with once in few months to multiple times on a single day - the average is 2-3 times a month. After restarting the server, everything starts to work fine again.
On one such an event, we were able to talk to our network guys to get tcpdump trace logs on server port. Analyzing the dump, the following is the behavior
client -> SYN -> server (server accepts)
    server -> SYN/ACK -> client (client accepts)
client -> ACK -> server (server does not accept)
    server -> SYN/ACK -> client
client -> ACK -> server (server does not accept) . This is repeated 6 times based on tcp retry setting
server -> RST -> client (client gets timed out error at this point)
I am no expert of tcp and so for me, the strange thing is to see ACK message at the server port yet server resending syn/ack messages. Could you tell me what this behavior could mean? Any guidance towards debugging this issue will be really helpful.
    Thanks in advance
PS: I am a newbie to forum so please feel free to let me know if I my post has any issues w.r.t forum decor/guidelines etc

I think you have an intermittent hardware problem somewhere in a router or switch in this path.

  • I'm going overseas and want to be able to upload my photos at the end of every day to a safe place.

I see that images uploaded to the Canon Image Gateway are reduced in size by default. For example, an image of 4.5M that I sent was reduced to 800K.
Is there any way to keep the image's original size?

I use both Dropbox and Google Drive -- both are free and provide a limited amount of storage space.
Dropbox.com gives you 2GB free but you can buy more.
    It's 9.99/month for 1TB
Google Drive (drive.google.com) gives you 15GB free and you can also buy more.
It's $1.99/month for 100GB and 9.99/month for 1TB (at which point it's the same price as Dropbox).
These are both basically "disk drives in the cloud" -- you can store any file on them since they aren't just for photos.

  • Cannot Connect to Server OSX 10.8

Please be patient, I am new to server administration.
I had set up a Mac Mini (mid 2011) running lion and lion server as a home server for Time Capsule, file sharing, and itunes home sharing.  Everything worked fine In April.
It seems a system update knocked the server off and I could not connect to it.  (ARD or VNC).  I checked forums and tried a bunch of things, but could not get it working.  Hoped Mountain Lion would fix it, but it did not help.
Cannot connect to server through VNC or ARD.  (Can connect from server to laptop, but not laptop to server).  Cannot connect to server through Finder (afp://with ip address) or just connecting to shared file location on the Finder.  All things I had been able to do.
Time Machine on my laptop cannot see the Time Capsule set on my server.
Currently running Mountain Lion with OSX Server 10.8.  File sharing turned on in server settings and also in the sharing settings under my preferences.  Remote management turned under sharing settings also.

So I verified the computer firewall was turned off.  Then I turned off the server firewall settings through the command line, restarted the computer, and the server was available to control under ARD and VNC.
I am going to update my data files, then make a bootable copy.
Thank you for reminding me to doublecheck the firewall.

  • Finder error -36 when connecting to server - smbclient in terminal works

Finder > Go > Connect to Server
When ever I need to connect to a smb server using Finder, I get the constant error -36.
    In console :
mount_smbfs: session setup phase failed: syserr = Socket is not connected
mount_smbfs: could not login to server EXIT15: syserr = Socket is not connected
mount_smbfs: 2 failures to open smb device: syserr = Resource busy
mount_smbfs: session setup phase failed: syserr = Authentication error
mount_smbfs: error from NetrShareEnum call: exception = 382312500
I can sometimes select the share to mount, and it tries for a few seconds, never succeeds.
10.4.10, but this was also case previously. We have every single Mac with this symptom so it is 7 work units at the moment, a Mac Pro, MacBook Pros, MacBook, Mac mini.
Wired, wireless, and even VPN, no matter how the mac is connected to the net.
Every non-Mac server at work tested gives this error when trying to connect to their shares.
    smbclient in terminal works.
http://www.macwindows.com/tiger.html and Apple kbase article 301580 suggestions for nsmb.conf didn't make any difference. (the nsmb noauth being a very poor choice if it would work)
smb.conf and nsmb.conf any security settings don't make any difference.
I have working details for connection, so share, ip and dns name, username and password for connection work.
    Connecting from Terminal works.
Connecting from any Windows or Linux virtual machine on Fusion on these same Macs work too.
I have changed the workgroup to the correct one in Directory Access.
I have tried all connection syntaxes suggested in http://www.macwindows.com/tiger.html - none of them still work in Finder, always identical results.
    smbclient //dns-name-or-ip/sharename -W workgroup -U username
is the only viable workaround at the moment.
    Domain=[dnsnameofwhereconnected] OS=[EMC-SNAS:T5.4.21.400] Server=[NT1]
is what smbclient gives for server details when its connected.
As smb works from command line, it's not smb itself that is affected. Just Finder.
I don't have access to edit any settings on the servers that we need to connect to. Only sharename and password that work for connection, but don't allow any editing on the server's settings.
Ideas? This should work in Finder.
Smbclient and Fusion area already somewhat workarounds, so I'm not looking for any third party software for dealing with this.
I spent way too much time with AppleCare on this, and all I got was 90 minutes wasted.
    Ideas anyone???

I think I have found what caused it. Not solved, but at least this seems so far the most likely cause:
    The share name contains hyphen.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106471 Mac OS X 10.1 or later: How to Connect to Windows File Sharing (SMB) : Date Modified: August 01, 2007
“6. You cannot connect to a share with a name that contains a hyphen. Resolve the issue by giving the share a name that does not contain a hyphen.”
smbclient in Terminal is not limited to this "feature" of Finder of Mac OS X 10.1 that was not fixed or recoded to solve it or modify it since adding smb in it in 2001.
It's not possible to test this changing the share name to one that does not contain a hyphen, nor to have one added in this server.
For users that won't have Terminal access, the solution are .. remote desktop with admin user, have admin user come to mount the share in location, or use virtualization software and with it anything that works.
Probably too optimistic to think the smb parts would have been rewritten for 10.5.

    OS 10.6.8, GoLive CS2 v 8.0.1
For my web creation I use Adobe GoLive. I seldom use it.

  • Connect to server using SMB. all of a sudden stopped working!! HELP!

I have a MBP which I used to connect to a Windows XP computer wireless using the smb server address feature in the Finder.
The thing is...it has been working for a couple of months with no problem. I sometimes take my Mac on the road and bring it back... when I'm ready to reconnect it, just go to the "recent items" under the Apple icon and reconnect.
But now, I get a long delay and I keep getting the message:
    "Connection Failed"
The server "XXX.XXX.X.XXX" may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again.
I've tried everything...the IP address is correct and the internet connection is working on both computers, so what's the problem?? HELP!!

I'm trying to work through the same problem. For 8 months everything worked fine with the network, and then last week "can't connect to servers". So far I've been able to connect to my servers only after a restart. Not even sure how long the fix lasts.
I've got 3 PCs and my MBP on the network. No problems w/the PCs at all. In fact the other servers can connect to each other as well as my MBP. Unfortunately my network printer is on one of the PCs, so rebooting every time I need to print is wearing thin.
This is my first Mac after owning a dozen or so PCs. I'm used to the ctrl-alt-del dance but was hoping for better from Apple. Everything else is great w/the Mac. Don't know why I waited so long to switch.
