    Thanks for the quick response. No, I did not get any error messages or any terms-of-usage screen. The employee I told my problem to was not computer savvy either. She just suggested I move to different spots w/in the library to see if that would make a difference. It didn't. When I connected to the library WiFi it did change the Verizon 3G that is usually in the upper left corner to iPad with two to three emanating arcs. I may have to go to the library in the next town. I was able to connect to theirs in the past when I had to download something greater than 20 MB. Unless I really want it, I will probably not even try to download something more than 20 MB due to the hassle. Yeah, I may have been better off getting a normal desktop or laptop and getting WiFi at home. To do that now would mean having my iPad 2 and a desktop computer, which I feel is extravagant. (I know there are a lot of big spenders out there who got the iPad as additional gadget for fun. This is a rich country.) A Verizon rep told me I couldn't set up a WiFi router at home just using an iPad. So it seems like a person who just uses 3G is limited to surfing the net (not even much YouTube because it eats a lot of data) and using email. I read about an app that helps print wirelessly using 3G, but a reviewer said you had to be an engineer to get it done right. BTW, I like the Steelers. I'm old enough to remember Franco Harris and that blond guy whose name escapes me back in the '70s. Since I live in North Jersey I feel I have to support the Giants. But I know football about as well as computers.

  • I cannot connect to the net through my TC with pppoe

    I used to connect to the internet using my TC as a router, connecting via PPPoE using a DSL modem.
    While my ISP had a problem with their network, the TC stop connecting to the PPPoE host and the amber light kept blinking. Because this was taking too long, I decided to investigate this issue.
    I tried connecting my laptop directly to the modem, the restored my original configuration.
    My MacBook Pro connected via ethernet to the DSL modem, is able to connect to the internet using a PPPoE connection. When I try the same via the TC, it just doesn't connect!
    What should I do to troubleshoot this?
    Is it possible that it is related to my ISP? Even though the laptop manages to connect via PPPoE.
    Even the DSL modem when switched to router functionality is able to connect via PPPoE.
    Only the TC seems to fail. What could be the problem?

    Even the DSL modem when switched to router functionality is able to connect via PPPoE.
    If your modem is acting as a router, you could configure the Time Capsule in Bridge Mode to connect that way. Is that a possibility that you could consider? A potential downside here is that if you have a dual band Time Capsule, the Guest Network feature cannot be enabled when the device is configured in Bridge Mode.

  • Cannot connect to the net after installation

    Hi All:
    I tried to install and work with Archlinux today but was not successful at all.
    I downloaded the ISO image of archlinux and burnt it to a CD (Archlinux-i686-2007.05-Duke). I tried to install the distro to my Compaq presario 700AP laptop (AMD Duron/128 MB RAM) Installation went smoothly and then the problems began. I coud not get networking to work. Here are the contents of the /etc/rc.conf file (networking section only given here):
    <--- contents of /etc/rc.conf ------------->
    lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
    eth0="eth0 192.168.1.10 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255"
    INTERFACES=(lo eth0)
    gateway="default gw 192.168.1.1"
    ROUTES=(gateway) ......................."I removed the ! sign to activate the gateway"
    <-------/contents ------>
    <--------- contents of /etc/resolv.conf ------------>
    and in the /etc/resolv.conf, I have
    nameserver 208.67.222.222
    nameserver 208.67.220.220
    search opendns.com
    I typed opendns.com since I have these dns addresses from opendns.
    <-------------
    When I ping my nameserver (208.67.222.222), it puts out several lines of messages like:
    64 bytes from 208.67.222.222: icmp_seq=55 ttl=252 time=284 ms
    Likewise, when I ping default gateway, I get several lines of messages like:
    64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=1 ttl=128 time=1.62 ms
    Yet I cannot ping google (http://www.google.com), and the error message is: "unknown host", nor can I use pacman to update packages from online repositories.
    What am I doing wrong? I have followed the networking guidelines and installation guidelines from the websites.
    Do I reinstall archlinux? I am lost.
    Best wishes,
    /Arin

    Thanks for the advice, but I still am not successful and I cannot figure out why.
    Dear All:
    Thanks for all your responses, but I still cannot connect to the Internet and this is a strange problem.
    I use a broadband connection, provided by India's BSNL broadband service, using an external modem (Huawei Corporation; SmartAx MT882). The internet service has provided me the following information:
    IP Address: 192.168.1.10
    Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
    Default gateway: 192.168.1.1
    DNS servers: 218.248.255.145
    DNS server(2): 61.1.96.71
    In addition, I use opendns and the dns server names are:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Here are the contents of my /etc/rc.conf (networking section):
    HOSTNAME="maurine"
    Io="Io 127.0.0.1"
    eth0="eth0 192.168.1.10 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255"
    INTERFACES=(Io eth0)
    gateway="default gw 192.168.1.1"
    ROUTES=(gateway)
    Contents of my /etc/resolv.conf
    search maurine.com
    nameserver 218.248.255.145
    nameserver 61.1.96.71
    nameserver 208.67.222.222
    nameserver 208.67.220.220
    If I try using pppoe -I eth0, it waits for some time and then returns a message "timeout waiting for PADO packets"
    If I "try /etc/rc.d/adsl start", it returns [FAIL] after some time.
    This has never been a problem with my ubuntu or windows installations before, I could easily connect to the web.
    What should I do to make sure I can connect to the Internet?
    When I ping 192.168.1.1, it takes me to my modem page and from there, when I run the diagnostics, it returns everything ok.
    Where may be the problem and what do I need to do to resolve this problem?
    Thanks in advance,
    Arin Basu

  • Windows 8.1 laptop cannot connect to the internet using USB Mobile Broadband stick.

    I bought a new laptop and it came with Windows 8.1 installed. Well, things worked perfectly until I wanted to connect to the internet using my mobile broadband USB stick. I installed the software that came with the stick, and my laptop recognize
    the stick but I still cant connect to the internet. The stick workes perfect in my Windows 7 and Windows 8 laptops, but IT DONT CONNECT WITH MY WINDOWS 8.1 LAPTOP. What can I do to troubleshoot this???
    HOPE I AM SPECIFIC ENOUGH THOU...

    The PC Repair Guy,
    If you haven't already, verify that you can connect to the internet through some other means such as Wi-Fi or Ethernet with your laptop to rule out any network setting issues.  If you are able to connect successfully to the internet, use that opportunity
    to make sure you have
    Windows 8.1 Update installed as well as any other applicable updates your laptop may require.
    You may also want to check the
    Windows Compatibility Center to make sure that your device is compatible with Windows 8.1.
    Another possibility is that the driver your laptop is installing for the device isn't the correct one.  Check the device manufacturer's site for the most up to date driver they have available for Windows 8.1.
    Hope this helps!

  • Firefox 5 does not work, it cannot connect to the net

    I have tried two times to install Firefox 5, but it does not work, it cannot find the net at all. It tells (in Finnish) "Muodostetaan yhteyttä" ("Creating the connection" or something like that in English) and it stops to that point of installation when there should come your Mozilla page up. I am using Win 7 Ultimate and F-Secure Client Security. Luckily it is possilble to install back the version 4.0.1. At my laptop with Win XP there is no problem with version 5.

    A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
    Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

  • Cannot connect to the internet using Cellular Data after iOS 6.0.1 update

    While installing the iOS 6.1 update for my iPhone 4, I encountered an issue and had to restore it. Since completing the restore, I am only able to use a wifi connection to connect to the internet (apps not working when wifi isn't available, not even iMessage or safari - "Safari cannot open the page because it could not connect to the server"), although I have a mobile internet plan with my carrier. I also tried resetting the phone to its factory settings, but that didin't solve anything. Did any of you encounter this problem? How can I solve it?

    Phone restart > if that doesn't work then do a reset of the settings. Full restore would be the last option.

  • Cannot connect to the internet using wireless, but dhcpcd passes...

    Thanks for reading this in advance
    So, I'm trying Arch Linux (going from XP/Ubuntu) on my desktop since all my friends at the university have been migrating to Arch, and even I loved the concept, and even installed it on a VirtualBox without problems.
    Problem is I don't have a network card in my desktop, only a wireless one. So I NEED to get this one working. Ubuntu 9.04 delivered support for this card (SMC EZ-Connect USB 2.0 blabla, I'll save you on the details) so I tried Arch and after a LOT of googling and help from a friend, I managed to build a pkg to install the wireless firmware that was lacking to the p54usb module, and finally my wireless card was detected and appeared in ifconfig/iwconfig
    However, after doing all the steps in the Arch Linux Begginer's Guide for configuring wireless, when I get to the last step (after using "dhcpcd wlan0" to acquire the IP from my wireless router, with sucess) that involves pinging just to test the connection, it fails. Unknown host. I've tryed almost everything and don't know the problem...
    I'll post some of the details here from the commands I've used.

    I have an i pod touch, which i use to facetime friends abroad when i am at home in the uk. I work on a ship and we have very limited broadband and we are not permitted to stream through company PC's. When we are in port what i would like to do is buy a USB modem/dongle (locally, as of now i am in indonesia) for my laptop, and connect to the net using that. Is it possible to make the laptop a wfi hot spot and then connect my touch so i can facetime.
    Is it technically doable?
    How much data does facetime use, and would it be an expensive way to do it?

    Yes. Google for

    See:
    http://www.geeksugar.com/How-Much-Data-Does-iPhone-4S-FaceTime-Use-23562212
    for comparison, according to one test of an iPhone 4 FaceTime call, about 3MB of data were used per minute over 3G service. Using this rule, a one-hour FaceTime phone call would use a scant 0.175GB of data.
