Cannot connect wirelessly with wpa_supplicant or netctl

Hey, I just installed arch linux. Also, I feel like I've accomplished some rite of passage just registering for these forums, as I had to get that command for the security question figured out (it failed a few times) then manually copy it to my laptop, which I'm using now. Anyway, here's my problem:
I failed to properly configure my internet connection while chrooted, as per the beginner's guide. Now I'm trying to fix it; I believe it's a problem with my config file. Here it is:
Description='Home wireless; WPA-encrypted'
Interface=wlp7s6
Connection=wireless
Security=wpa
IP=dhcp
ESSID='HOME-3D58'
# Prepend hexadecimal keys with \"
# If your key starts with ", write it as '""<key"'
# See also: the section on special quoting rules in netctl.profile(5)
Key='#######'
# Uncomment this if your ssid is hidden
#Hidden=yes
I sure hope I copied that right, I'm manually copying it from my desktop (where I just installed arch) to my laptop, which is up and running crunchbang.
when I execute
netctl start home-wireless
I get the output
Job for netctl@home\x2dwireless.service failed. See "systemctl status netctl@home\x2dwireless.service' and 'journalctl -xn' for details.
executing the former (systemctl status....) gives
netctl@home\x2dwireless.service - Networking for netctl profile homex2dwireless
Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/system/[email protected]; static)
Active: inactive (dead)
Docs: man:netctl.profile(5)
executing the latter (journalctl -xn) gives: (NOTE: dates and times have been left out because I'm tired of typing all this) also, replace <mac-address> with the mac address of my router (at least, I think it's my router...)

when I try to use
iw dev wlp7s6 scan | grep SSID
I find my router (HOME-3D58). I then ran
wpa_supplicant -B -i wlp7s6 -c <(wpa_passphrase "HOME-3D58" "#######")
then, the console outputs
Successfully initialized wpa_supplicant
however, if I try to ping any website, I am told that the "network is unreachable"

Sorry because I am reading your post very fast and no deeply.
But, I think parameters like essid and key must not have quoting.

There is an example in ArchWiki:

  • HP 6500a Plus cannot connect wirelessly

    Hi,
Just bought the HP6500a Plus and understand that this printer is having problem with the constant wireless connection. I am having the same problem and changing the IP address occasionally solve the problem but not alway and it also create problem which cannot access to webapps or ePrint because I change the IP address and also put 0.0.0.0 in the gateway  address.
    My problems are as follow
    1. My Mac Pro running Lion cannot constantly connect to 6500a even the IP address changed to out of range IP address and  pti 0.0.0.0 in gateway address.
    2. After changed, the web apps cannot access and cannot access ePrint too.
    3. Airprint from iPhone cannot detect the printer consistently.
I am thinking to return the product but the 8500a also having the same problem.
Please let me know any good solution. Thanks.

  • Hp laserjet Pro 200 M276nw won't consistently connect wirelessly with iMac

I'm on my second brand new hp laserjet Pro 200 M276nw in 3 days, it will not consistently connect wirelessly with my newly purchased (8days old) Apple refurbished 27" iMac on OSX 10.9, i7 chip & Fusion Drive.  The hp laserjet will sometimes connect wirelessly immediately after clicking "print" on the iMac, but about half the time it says "printer not connected" & takes 2-4 minutes (or longer) before the devices do connect. I've called hp support many times, they're reset various things via remote takeover of my iMac, the printer will work for a few of minutes but then the same problem returns. AppleCare made sure I have the
correct Airprint driver installed & also checked my settings, but says they don't know why this is occurring. I've also verified that our newer (6 months old) AT&T router is functioning correctly.
My older hp laserjet (CM1312nfi MFP) has worked flawlessly since 2009 via USB connection with my old iMac (still on Snow Leopard), I assumed it would continue with the new one, but there is no software update for Mavericks & the scanning feature won't operate on the new iMac. Hp says it is a discontinued model. The new hp laserjet is a successor model to the older one, they are both very similar except for the new wireless feature.
I can print fast & wirelessly from the new iMac via a different new hp inkjet printer (8600 series) here in the house. This inkjet printer is less than a month old, I installed it myself for a Windows laptop here, it has never malfunctioned.  Unfortunately it's upstairs & I do not like inkjet print quality, I need a good laserjet here in my office downstairs next to my iMac.

    HI there
Did you manage to sort this issue out - as I have exactly the same problem.
Lots of similarities as I also have an inkjet 8600 which works via USB and wirelessly no problems at all!
I always  buy HP printers as they are usually easy to set up - but this one is making me tear my hair out!
I've even upgraded to Yosemite and downloaded the new drivers from HP - no success.  The printer will print one page and then become unavailable.
I can print via USB or wireless direct - but not just via my wireless network which is what I want to do!
No responses posted - so assume no one has a fix.
    aaaargh!!!

This is a known, ans ongoing issue. Rest assured you're not the only one affected. There are several threads here already discussing this, I suggest searhing them out if you want more details, and possible work-arounds for locally hosted content.

  • Cannot connect wireless to my timecapsule.

I am configuring my timecapsule for the first time.
I have been using an airport snow that has worked fine. But now I own a MacBook pro 3.06 Intel core 2 duo running 10.6.3 and thought I'd give it another try so I could use timemachine.
I can't get my laptop to connect wirelessly anymore.
When I set up the timecapsule I had it use all of the old settings. I'm using a linksys cable modem on Cox cable. I've tested and reset everything. The cable modem works since I am obviously online. The ethernet cable works, since I am obviously online.
But when I disconnect the ethernet cable from the laptop and connect it to the correct port on the timecapsule is cannot establish an interent connection.
The timecapsule is working. I get a green light when the ethernet cable is connected. And the "fan" is all black. But when I got into the network preferences it says self-assigned IP. I've tried creating a new network and reconfiguring the automatic. Nothing is working.
I'm getting tired of crouching in front of the TV because my ethernet cable isn't long enough. That's what a wireless network is for.
Everything seems to be working properly except the timecapsule. And when I run all of the diagnostics, etc. the only suggestion I get is to call my internet service provider. I know for a fact that that is not the problem. It's an apple problem. And if I call them they'll only refer me to apple. Who will refer me back to the isp.
I bought my laptop last Thanksgiving so I doubt my airport card has died in the last 6 months. So it's not the laptop.
That still leaves the timecapsulel. Greenlight. Full fan. Still no connection.
    I'd welcome any suggestions.

    Done all that.
    Have full bar fan.
    Appears to connect.
But then the bars go away and it grays out with an exclamation mark in the middle.
I've spent hours on this. I need to get this thing to work because without it I have no time machine back up. And I was hacked last night and ALL of my mail was deleted from my mobileme account. I can't back up and I have no mail. Now I have no internet either because I disconnected the snow to try to get the capsule working again. It still doesn't. Right now I'm crouched in front of the cable modem connected with an ethernet cable.
    I can't live like this.
I've renamed it. I've changed the passwords. I've deleted the network names and made new ones and selected the capsule and put in the password and applied it and it still doesn't work.
What is it with this thing? Apple is supposed to be so simple a child could set it up. I've set up plenty of apple stuff. I set up my old Snow and it worked fine until I messed it up trying to configure the timecapsule. Now the Airport Utility can't even find the Snow anymore.
I need a step by step, simplified for a moron, detailed description of what I can do to get this running without deleting the one backup I have on the time capsule. Because that is my ONLY chance of recovering my e-mail.

  • Actiontel GT704WG - Cannot connect wirelessly

Hello, I recently purchased an older laptop (Toshiba T6100) for my nephew so that he could use it wirelessly around his house. Upon receipt of it at my house, and while cleaning it up, I was able to connect wirelessly to my Verizon FIOS router without any problems. I then took the laptop to his home in Irving, where he has basic DSL service, with the GT704WG router. Regardless if I tried accessing it secured or unsecured, I was never able to access the internet (I could wired). Locally, there was a 'linksys' router that I was able to connect to, and my laptop would connect to this GT704WG, but this laptop could not. It appears that the darn thing can connect to every other router except for this GT704WG.
The card in it is as follows: Toshiba Wireless LAN Mini PCI Card
I have found the latest drivers for it (2003!), yet still cannot get it to work. I even tried setting it up in WPA mode, no luck.
Has anyone ran across this problem? My poor nephew was on the phone four hours with Verizon Customer Service but they were never able to connect it up either, saying that it must have something to do with the computer.
Remember, this same wireless card easily connected to my FIOS box, and the local linksys one, but NOT this Verizon provided GT704WG.

Did you put this modem into bridge mode?
The directions for that are located by following this path...
    a) http://start.verizon.net/
    b) Support
    c) Internet
    d) Home Networking
    e) Connecting a third party router.
    f) Actiontec GT704WG.

  • Cannot connect wirelessly to HP Photosmart B110a

This has been bugging me ever since a tech told me my printer will not work wirelessly with Apple products. I've been connecting it directly to MacBook Pro and iMac and it works, but true enough it has never really worked wirelessly as it should, maybe couple of times with iPad HP app, also the scanning worked.
Accordingy to HP Wireless Network Test Report everything works. Adding the printer from System Preferences works in a way, the printer shows up as Bonjour Multifunction, but when trying to add it I get this: "Setting up Photosmart B110 series" > "Unable to communicate with the printer at this time".
The same thing happens if I plug the printer to the Airport Extreme router.
I remember being able to find the printer with a browser by typing in 192.168.1.238 (from the Test Report) but that doesn't work with any Mac or PC.
Reseting the printer services at System Preferences>Printers&Scanners won't help, or doing the HP printer reset.
I'm very curious about this because I was told there is a wireless bug with this HP printer and it just cannot be fixed. Since it has the SD card lot of people just use the card to store the scans and do printing, very convinient. I have seen dozens of these with a continuous ink cartridge setups, and the complete set of XL ink cartridges can be had for about 12USD so that way it's a cheap printer to own.

I reset the printing system.  Still not having any luck. I can only get my printer as far as a temporary 169.254.207.168 IP address.   That brings me to this page with two tabs. In this tab, I'm able to change the SSID to my network and add the WEP.  I've tried both Infrastructure and Ad Hoc (since I didn't know which to use) but both have not been successful.   The page times out after awhile and I click my wifi setting to check the connection.  I can then connect to my printer whose name has changed from hpsetup to my network name...but is still listed under devices.   So I click on that device and run another newtork config page and I still get the same 169.254.207.168 IP address. So then I tried two things:1. Switching over to my actual wifi network with the name network name.  This does not read my printer anymore and I get an 0.0.0.0 IP address2. While connected to the network listed under devices, I tried adding the Printer in my Printer & Scanner settings.  This works and prints, but only when connected under the devices wifi, and not my normal wifi.  When I switch to my normal wifi and try to print, it can no longer find the printer.  I seem to be having trouble getting an 192.168 IP address for my printer so that it can read on my normal Wifi network without being listed as just a device....

  • Printer not connecting wirelessly with iMac

MacBook Pro working on OSX 10.4.11 wirelessly with Epson PX710W. Tried to add iMac on OS X10.5.8 but failure to connect on every attempt after numerous sessions with Epson Support. Have repaired permissions having previously run verification of HD which was reported OK. Reset printer system and reinstalled drivers without success. Still receiving message job stopped on both computers. On setting up the sample page to print, when selecting the PX 710W printer or the other printer option, there is a quick flash. Then the MacBook will not print due to 'communication error'. But if the PX710W is turned off and then on again, the MacBook will print.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Switch router to channel 1. Disable and remove all security on the router. Now try to connect to your unsecured SSID. Are you successful?

  • D-Link DIR-615 cannot access wirelessly with iPhone 3G

I've added another router to my home to get better range in the far corners of the house. I added a D-Link DIR-615 hard wired to my first router. I can access this new router both by cable and wirelessly with my laptop, but not wirelessly with my iPhone.
I've tried making the password all letters, (saw a post that said numbers don't work??) and even taking out the password and leaving it blank. The iPhone sees the router and identifies it by name. When I try connecting, after entering the password, it says "unable to connect to network". IO can connect to my first router with the iPhone.
Any suggestions? I'm using WEP for encription, except when I tried it with no passwords! Thanks!

    A few ideas:
Often the power on sequence is the determining factor in if/how DHCP will work. Especially when it comes to consumer-grade cable modems and routers. Try different power on sequences.
Try to figure out if your cable modem is storing and enforcing the MAC address of one of your devices. Take the router out of the picture, attach your MBP, and see if it works. Then leave the modem on, unhook the MBP, and plug in a Windows laptop. If it doesn't work, then your modem wants/needs to only see one MAC address. If this is the case, look in your routers settings for "Spoof this computer's MAC Address" and you should be good to go.
One trick I've used in the past is to assign an entirely new subnet for the router to hand out. For example if it used to give out 192.168.1.x, the new subnet would be set to 10.1.1.x. This forces every system and rebuild its caches. Too many times routers, controllers, OSes, apps, and even hardware like phones keep caches to help speed things up. It's not always obvious how to reset these. But by switching subnets you force every device to rebuild the caches.
    Good luck.

  • Connecting wirelessly with a router

    Hey all,
Got a question about wireless internet.
I have a Netgear router that is connected to my PC and Airport on this new Mac is picking up the signal broadcast by the router in order for me to connect to the Internet.
My question is: if I get rid of the PC, which I intend to do in the near future, will the router have to be connected to this Mac in order for me to connect to the net? Because I actually want to be able to connect wirelessly around my house without being tied down like the PC was. Furthermore, is it possible to just have the router plugged in but not connected to a computer as such and still broadcast the signal needed for me to connect to the net?
Any information on this will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Joe

    Joe,
No, you do not need to have any computer connected directly to your router. I assume that the router is also connected to a cable or DSL modem. This is all that is required to gain access to the internet; the modem establishes communication with your ISP's server, and the router gains a "public" IP address. The router then grants "private" IP addresses to every computer or device that connects locally within your network (regardless of whether that connection is "wired" via ethernet or wireless), and shares its single public IP address among the private addresses it manages. That's how routers work.

  • WRV54G - Problems connecting wirelessly with Windows 7

I'm unable to connect wirelessly to router using a HP laptop with windows 7. I have 2 xp laptops that connect without a problem. The HP laptop finds network, but once I click on network to connect, it does not ask for the security code therefore I can not connect to network.

Hi. I think you need to verify your router MAC Filtering. I would suggest to disable it first. Check this link,
    http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgibin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.phpp_faqid=20600&p_created=125498...
Also, make sure you're using the latest firmware for the router. Don't forget to manage the Profile of the card as stated on the link provided above. Thanks.

  • Will my iMac connect wireless with my ISP modem?

Do I need to specifically have an airport express or airport extreme base station to connect wirelessly to the internet? I have a modem that was supplied by my ISP. When I try to connect to the internet, the serial number for the modem appears, however, when I enter my WEP password, I get an error message that "there was an error joining the airport network." I also have an ibook G4, and have no problem connecting with it.
The tech's at my ISP aren't much help, as they're not mac-friendly.
    Any ideas?

Do I need to specifically have an airport express or airport extreme base station to connect wirelessly to the internet?
No. If your iMac G5 has built-in wireless, or has the AirPort Extreme card installed, it can join any 802.11b or 802.11g compatible wireless network.

  • Cannot connect wirelessly to timecapsule

    Hello,
Until a few days ago, my macbook pro mid-2010 (OS X 10.6.8) happily connected wirelessly to the my TimeCapsule.
When I boot Windows laptop happily connects to the TimeCapsule. Also I have no problem with connection to other WIFI spots.
However, only when I boot mac os the macbook pro now won't connect.
On the Macbook, when I select my network from the list of available networks from the Airport icon in the top menu bar, I get a dialogue box that asks for my WPA password (which the Mac used to just remember for me). When I enter it and click OK, it tries to connect for a few seconds and then gives me a "Connection timeout" message.
Usually laptop succesfully connects to time capsule after 10-20 connection atempts.
    Thank you.

    Thanks Bob,
But it didn't solve the problem.
I connected only after several times turn off/on Air Port.
I attached screenshot. The warning message is "connection failed"
