Cannot create a large hardcover book in iphoto '08

I'm trying to create a large (8.5 x 11) hardcover book in iphoto. I've followed all of the directions (selecting the album, selecting "book" and then selecting the size and theme but nothing happens. The only book that I seem to be able to create is a size small softcover.
Has anyone been able to solve this issue? The large hardcover book option appears in the drop down but clicking it doesn't do anything.
Thanks!

I've not seen this reported - try renewing yoru iPhoto preference file - A good general step for strange issues is to renew the iPhoto preference file - quit iPhoto and go to "your user name" ==> library ==> preferences ==> com.apple.iPhoto.plist and trash it - launch iPhoto which creates a fresh new default preference file and reset any personal preferences you have changed and if you have moved the iPhoto library repoint to it. This may help
This does not affect your photos or any database information (keywords, faces, places, ratings, etc) in any way - they are stored in the iPhoto library - the iPhoto preference file simply controls how iPhoto works - which is why renewing it is a good first step.

  • Large Hardcover Book

I just placed an order for a large hardcover book from iPhoto and have recently read that the quality on the medium sized books was mediocre. Is this true for the large hardcover books?
Also, how's the quality on the calendars and greeting cards? I'm thinking about ordering some for the holidays.
    Thanks!

    NtM:
The large hardcover books that I've ordered were great. Absolutely no problems at all. The two medium books that I've ordered were OK for their intended use, memory book of a day at Seaworld for the grandkids, but the image quality was not nearly as good. The medium book had a halftone pattern that was visible to the naked eye if held close to the eye. The same pattern required a 10X eye loupe to see the pattern.
The difference was, I think, due to different printers used for each size. I haven't ordered one in a while so don't know if the medium books have changed.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • After creating a hardcover book in iPhoto how do you copy and create wire bound issues of the same book?

I created a hardcover book in iPhoto.  Now, I want to make additional copies but wire bound instead of hardcover.  Can't seem to make it happen.

Duplicate the book in case of problems (command-D) and click on change theme - select the same theme and the new binding -
Before ordering your book preview it using this method - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1040 - and save the resulting PDF for reference - the delivered book will match it.
    - check the preview very carefully in case any text reflows or gets cut off due to size differences

  • Using Aperture, I printed a large hardcover book.  Upon delivery, I found a gross error in wording on the cover.  Is there a way to get the cover only reprinted?

Using Aperture, I printed a large hardcover book.  Upon delivery, there was a spelling error on the cover  of the books.  Is it possible to get just the cover of the books reprinted correctly?

No.  If Aperture works similar to iPhoto as far a creating PDFs of the book you can create a pdf of the book and using it find a printer like Kinkos that could print a new cover. The PDF file that gets created by Control-clicking the background in the book mode will create the correct type of pdf file for this:
In iPhoto the PDF that gets created when you try to print the book and select PDF ➙ Save as PDF creates the wrong format for what you want.  If you have trouble creating that PDF file ask over in the Aperture forum.

  • HT3412 The preview of my hardcover book as iPhoto laid it out is 62 pgs. even though there are only 82 photos in my album.  That seems like a lot of pgs. for so few photos.  Is this a full 62 pgs or 31? How much is 62pgs?

The preview of my hardcover book as iPhoto laid it out is 62 pgs. even though there are only 82 photos in my album.
The auto layout used mostly 1 photo, full pages.  Obviosuly I can manually re-layout the pages as multi-photo pages and reduce the number of pages.
However, that seems like a lot of pgs. for so few photos since a blank Photo Essay book layout appears to use 73 photos?
I'm not sure I know why iPhoto did not the default layout to fill those photo frames.  I expected the 82 photos to use approximately 23-24 pages max.
Is this a full 62 full pgs or 31sheets?
If it is a true 62 pages, what is the cost?
    Thanks for the help.

What does the book look like in iPhoto in the All Pages window?  Are there photos on all pages? Books are printed on both sides of the page so that would be 31 pages.
This book has 48 pages or 24 sheets.
To find the cost click on the Buy Book button and check the price that is presented to you.  You can always cancel out of the purchase process.

  • IPhoto crashes when ordering large, hardcover book!  iLife 11

Can anyone help? I spent many hours creating a book as a Christmas gift and when I try to order it iphoto "quits unexpectedly" after approx. page 50. I saw another thread about deleting something in keychain, quitting all other applications and dragging plist file to desktop. None of these solutions worked! I am using iLife 11 - all software is up to date! It quits during the assembly phase.

KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE is most often related to bad data. Try the following: make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Spread on Large Hardcover Dust Jacket, what appears on the spine?

I'm designing a large hardcover book and I've created an outer spread across the dust jacket. I was hoping that the photograph would print across the spine but on-screen there seems to be no allowance for this (i.e. the width of the spread is exactly two page widths with nothing extra allowed for the width of the spine).
So, simple question - how does the spine of the printed book appear when a photo is spread across the dust jacket?
    Thanks,
    Graham
P.S. this thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6734031&#6734031 mentions that the title is printed on the spine but doesn't say whether it appears over the photograph if the outer cover is configured as a spread...

    Richard:
1 - the hard cover has a silver embossed title. It's very nice. Be warned that many have been unhappy with the printing on the dusk jacket. It's been dark and bad color for many. Mine came in too dark but the book was OK. Apple has been very good about making things right in those occurrences.
2 - the spine has the book title printed on it and was oriented vertically as I recall. I gave the book away as a give so can't confirm. It's just the Title field and not the additional text that's in the lower field on the cover.

I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Problem ordering softcover book through iPhoto

I am trying to order a large softcover book of pictures that I created with iPhoto. When I attempt to do this through the software, the only option I am given is to purchase a large hardcover book. How do I get around this?

my ibook would transfer, then an error message popped up saying there was an error in my network. but then I checked my network, adn it came back as working properly- any thoughts?

  • Picture on Hardcover Book

I gave my husband a hardcover book for his birthday 3 days ago, and the photo on the front is already peeling off. I am so disappointed in the quality of the cover (although I love the inside). Does anyone know who can help me with this? Also, the text page is hard to read while typing... Am I missing a way to make it easier? Thank you so much...

Can't help you with the peeling issue but for the typing I've had to run the slider at the bottom of the window over so the entire page is larger. This makes the text easier to see and type but makes it a little slower and clumsier to move around and from page to page.
Depending on the age of the book, I'd definitely email the iPhoto Customer Support for orders and give them that information. I've ordered two large hardcover books and the recipients have not mentioned any problem with the cover picture.

  • Image Quality - Large Hardcover vs. Large Softcover

I have seen several post mention that the large hardcover books are the best quality since they are printed on different paper than the Medium softcover books. Is this also true when compared to the Large softcover books?
I like the Large softcover format. Is there a difference in the quality between the large softcover and large hardcover books?
    Thanks,
    Jerry

    Jerry:
The primary difference between the large and medium/small books was the printers used on the different sizes. The large were printed on a different type of printer that gave better results. The paper appears to be the same, at least for my medium and large books. I would think the soft cover would be the same image print quality as the hard cover.

  • Export a book from iPhoto

I created a 20 page book in iPhoto which I want to email to a relative. How do I go about doing that? Thanks.

Did you create the book in iPhoto on an iDevece (iPhone, iPad, etc.)? Then the only currently supported way to share the book is to have it printed by Apple and delivered to a relative. There is not yet any way to save a preview of the book as a pdf file and mail it. You could create a shared Photo Stream or a Journal from the photos in your book and publish these to your iCloud webpage.
If you created the book in iPhoto on a mac you can simply create a pdf preview and mail this preview, if the file size is not too large. See:  iPhoto, Aperture: Previewing an order in iPhoto or Aperture

  • Shipping on large softcover book?

How much is shipping on a large softcover book? Also, are the pages double sided?

More problems have been encountered in the medium and small books in regards to image quality. You can use Pref Setter to edit the iPhoto preference file and boost the dpi settings to 300 for the bolded items below:
    BookTargetDPI - 300
    BookTargetImageDPI - 150
    BookTargetMediumDPI-300
    BookTargetMediumImage - 150
    BookTargetSmallDPI - 300
    BookTargetSmallImageDPI - 300
    BookWarningImageDPI - 130
    PrintImageDPI - 720
    PrintWarningImageDPI - 140
That will help some. It seems the biggest problem, as far as we can determine, is that it's a different printing operation for the small and medium books than for the large. But, as I said, it's speculation. Personally, I've had no problems with large, hardcover books. Medium softcover did have a halftone pattern visible to the naked eye in the images. It took an eye loop at about 8X to see the pattern in the large books.

  • Hardcover Book Print Quality = Very Poor!

In the past with iPhoto 4 & 5, I have ordered and recieved hardcover books of very high print quality. I have just recieved my first hardcover book using iPhoto 6.01, and the print quality is down right poor and unacceptable. My high resolution shots all look extremely grainy and "poster-ized". The contrast on most shots is all out of sorts. I have read other posts regarding local printing of books (using your home printer, etc.) and people are sayint the same things. It looks like v.6 has some output problems which Apple must resolve. Until then, no more books for me (But how will we know when this issue is fixed?? Wait a while, take our chances, and order another one?).
    STEVE

I'm pushing Apple to provide full printing specs on the books, using some enterprise-level contacts to try to get around the lack of response from the official consumer support channel. I have an open ticket with the print services support people as well. I'll post info here in the "Photo book quality" topic:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=313677&tstart=15
if and when I get answers.
Meanwhile, you might want to consider asking for a refund. Others have had success doing so.
