Cannot create audio CDs

Since upgrading to v. 7, there is no way to burn an audio CD of my playlists. I get a message that says either I can't burn music purchased from the iTunes store to CD, or a message that tells me my aiff files can't be burned to an mp3 cd. HELP.
imac g5 Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Go to iTunes prefs>Advanced>Burning and set yur burning preferences. The only way to burn mix files types is to burn a Data CD/DVD.
To burn iTS purchases you can burn a data CD/DVD or an audio CD. They you can re-rip (import) the resulting audio CD in what ever format you have set in your importing preferences.
To burn AIFF to mp3 CD you will first have to convert the AIFF to an mp3.

• Cannot play audio CDs in totem

I have totem-gstreamer and the gstreamer plugins for cdaudio, cdio and cdparanoia.
I am in the audio and optical group.
The permissions of my cd-rom are as follows: brw-r----- 1 root audio 22, 0 2007-08-06 22:35 /dev/hdc
The audio CD appears as an icon on my desktop when I insert it.
No other audio application is running.
I can play audio cds using the cdplay program cdkit provides.
But, when I start totem the option Play Disc 'Audio CD' is greyed out.
I've tried turning HAL off and restarting totem to no avail.
I've tried totem-xine and still it does not work.
The only thing that does give some food for thought is that when I kill gnome-vfs-daemon the option "Play Disc "Audio CD"" disappears...
Help!

Hello arbee,
It seems certain that the problem lies with your CD player. It is well-known that many older CD players will not read CD-R discs. If you look at this two-year old discussion you'll see what the issues are for someone who had a similar experience to yourself.
This discussion also suggests that you might get better results from using a higher-grade burning programme, such as Toast -- but nothing's certain.
Best wishes,
Martin

• After update, cannot play audio cds (via kscd or dragon player)

Hello!
Subject says it all.
I just did a pacman -Syu on my system. Afterwards, I am now unable to play audio cds.... nothing happens.
I insert a known-working cd in drive, and I don't get any sort of device insertion notification from kde. Fine, no big deal. But when I open kscd, and hit the play button... nothing happens. Same with dragon. What happened? And how to fix?
Many thanks!

• DR8-A cannot read audio CDs

Hi,
After using my DR8-A for a bit over 2 years without any major problem, i just found a peculiar behavior.
My drive can *perfectly* burn any type (data CD, audio CD, DVD both data or video) of media and even normally read any type of media (DVD, both data or video, data CD...), but it does NOT recognize any audio CD.
Stranger, it does not even recognize the audio CDs it burns itself
Any audio CD inserted in the drive would spin up, seek and spin down after a while, but not be recognized.
I search the forum about occurences of such problems and found many where the DVD stop recognizing some type of media, but just audio seems new. No solution was ever provided, except RMA (not really an option on a 2+ year old drive).
Anyway, not really a matter of life or death (i still have a plextor CDR to burn audio), but more of a curiosity.

nope, once the disk is ejected, it is not recognized anymore. The Audio CDs burnt this way work great in any CD player (i have not tested them in the plextor for errors).
The funny part is that i did not change any configuration lately, but it still ceased to work.
I'm using a modified 1.5D firmware (and had been for a while). I may try to flash it to a 1.6D, but i'm not sure if i have a DR8A or a DR8A2 (which takes the 1.6D).
I may run more tests on the drive, but i'm not really worried. It served its 2 years and still act for the function i need (ie: burn DVD). I have a DVD DL on order anyway
Edit: Well, it seems that a few cold boot have fixed this problem. Weird... It did not last week end, when it manifested itself, but a power outtage took care of it. By the way, i tested the burnt audio CD in nero CD speed and the CD is perfect. No error. EAC is 10 with reliable stream. No idea where it came from or why it left, but good riddance...

• Cannot burn Audio CDs (only Data CDs) since upgrade to Itunes 7

I'm having a problem and it is very frustrating. Worked fine with Ver. 6 but you had to download to ver. 7 before you could purchase any new music so I did. Big mistake! My problem is burning CDs. I can only burn "Data CDs." I went to "Edit" and then to "preferences" then to "Advanced" and then to "Burning" -At that point you have a choice to choose Audio CD burning or Data CD burning. I will not stay on Audio CD burning - keeps defaulting to Data CD burning and there is no "save" button or anything to stop it from happening. When it burns from the data cd it the cd will only play in my computer - not in my car or other player. Would you know how to correct this???? to stop the default? My ipod is fine. I hope Apple takes care of this soon.

• I can't create audio CD in itunes 10.3

I "upgraded" to iTunes 10.0.0.68 a while back. When I did this the various options for creating an audio CD vanished. I've scoured many apple forums & found lots of people have this issue. The feedback they get is generally insinuating that they are stupid because they can't see the "burn" button on the "advanced" tab under "edit>preferences>advanced" or they are not clicking the playlist or some other thing.
So what I'm saying is that none of the places I have searched offered an explanation. Eventually I decided to "upgrade" to 10.3.1.55 because most of the suggestions recommended that as a last resort. There is still no option to burn an audio CD or an mp3 CD anywhere in iTunes for Windows.
I'm running XP, I have two different burners that work with every single program I have, except iTunes. And it's really not that they don't work with iTunes, because iTunes would need to have a "burn" option somewhere in the program for them to not work with iTunes. And it does not. The only thing I can do is create a backup of my iTunes library. That is not what I need to do.
Does anyone know if iTunes is still capable of creating audio CDs? If so, please, please tell me your secrets! Thanks so much for any help you can give.

Okay, I may have answered my own question. When I have iTunes up, & I insert a blank disc I get a pop-up that tells me I've inserted a blank disc, if I want to burn to it, go to file>burn bla bla bla and sure enough, now the option shows up. Hmmm...
So here's what I did: I removed the disc & restarted iTunes to see if the option would go away. It did not. Even with no disc in the drive I now have the option "burn playlist to disc" under the "file" menu. It was not there 20 minutes ago, and has not been there ever with 10.0.0.68. I cannot say whether I ever inserted a blank disc while 10.0.0.68 was up or not, but I do know that I burned lots of stuff with other programs. My next experiment will be to completely reboot the computer, then start iTunes & see if the option is still there.
I'll let you know how that turns out. :-)
Here is my suggestion to anyone having the same issue: just pull up iTunes, then stick a blank disc into your drive & see what happens. I'm betting your issue will be resolved.

• Cannot play audio CD with Creative MediaSource Pla

Hi All,
I recently installed an Audigy 2 ZS Platinum soundcard and the Creative MediaSource Player software. I also purchased Creative 5. Analog speakers. Have everything configured pretty well now and really enjoying the enhanced sounds!
My problem is that I cannot play audio CDs using the MediaSource Player. I can see my DVD Player and CD Player in the MediaSource Player 'Source' column and a list of all the tracks on the CD. (no track info, just track numbers and length)
When I double-click on a track it cycles through all the tracks and then places an 'X' next to each one in the 'Now Playing' list window. If I have other music files from my harddri've available, it will start playing one of them.
I've tried different CDs with the same results.
I can use both the DVD and CD dri'ves to play an audio CD if I use any other player (Winamp, Windows Media Player, etc.) and use both dri'ves everyday for loading software and reading files. It will also read the demo DVD Audio disk that came with the card using the DVD-Audio player they provide so I'm pretty sure there's nothing wrong with the hardware or drivers.
I've read all the info that came with the card and on the Creative Web site and have been through every configuration screen multiple times but haven't found a switch that turns this feature on.
Would like to get this working so I can standardize on one player that allows me to use all the advanced features of my new card.
Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this.
Jay Perez

A good way to see what kinds of things you might need for something like vlc is to look at the optional dependencies for the package. So if you do pacman -Qi vlc if the package is installed on your system already, or pacman -Si vlc if not yet installed, you can see in the output what kinds of optional dependencies there are. Typically there is a short description of the extra functionality that the optional dependency can provide as well.
So in the case of vlc (and the libcdio optional dep) I get:
$ pacman -Qi vlc
Name : vlc
<SNIP>
Optional Deps : avahi: for service discovery using bonjour protocol [installed]
<SNIP SOME MORE>
projectm: for ProjectM visualisation plugin
libcaca: for colored ASCII art video output [installed]
libgme: for libgme plugin [installed]
librsvg: for SVG plugin [installed]
gnome-vfs: for GNOME Virtual File System support
libgoom2: for libgoom plugin

xosd: for xosd support

• ITunes 11.1 on Windows 8 will not play/rip audio CDs

Problem:
I cannot play or rip audio CDs using iTunes on Windows 8. iTunes does not show any errors. It recognizes that I've put in an audio CD with tracks (and, in fact, matched the tracks in the iTunes database). When I click the Play button, it just skips from one song to the next.
Stats:
- OS: Windows 8 Media Edition/64-bit
- BDRW: LG WH14NS40
- iTunes: 11.0.1.126
Background:
I built a computer and installed a BDRW. The BDRW uses Windows drivers, so no additional software was installed.
The burner reads CD/DVD data and video just fine (haven't tested with BluRay yet).
When I put an audio CD in, I couldn't listen to it in either iTunes or Windows Media Player.
After following the directions here -- http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-pictures/dvdcd-player -not-playing-audio-cds-win8-laptop/791e04c0-628e-42a8-8014-43cc782511a4 -- I could hear it on Windows Media Player, but not on iTunes.
I could not rip any music using iTunes: all it did was create a bunch of 1kb files.
Question:
How could I have iTunes play Audio CDs again?
Thanks in advance.

Correction: iTunes 11.1.0.126, not 11.0.1.126

• Audio CDs Downloading Very Slow - Any Advice?

Any advice on how to increase the speed when downloading tunes from audio cds? I am experienceing very slow burn time, and the songs tend to skip when i aply the audio cd through iTunes. I have a Dell pc with windows 7. Not certain which version of iTunes I am using, but it is a newer version.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi
For the files and folders that do not have to be changed in the portal, you can define read-only access. These can then be stored in the local browser cache. You make this setting in the Details dialog box. Choose Settings → Properties. On the System tab page, activate the Write-Protected property.
This setting means that the content can no longer be updated using the CM user interface, however, you can still update properties. If read-only access is defined for a folder, you cannot create any more subfolders, but you can delete, move, and change existing documents.

• Unrecognized audio CDs while importing

my ITunes don't recognize tracks of audio CDs. Based on the informtion in some of the threads I created new account and there everything works fine and I can import CDs with their labels. I've deleted the preference files and launch Itunes again but still I can see only tracks without their info (artist, title, etc).
Can anyone help?

I may be having the same sort of problem with my iPOD nano. I have an audio CD set and iTunes fills in the album and individual CD information for some CD's and not others. It's a recorded books set and I ahve no idea why it grabs some of the CD information adn not others.
I didn't understand what you meant when you said "I created a new account etc." I got my REcorded Books CD's from the library (e.g., the public library) not the iTunes store.

• ITunes on Windows Vista and audio CDs

I just downloaded the new version of iTunes for Windows Vista. I actually tried this before the new version came out and my audio CDs wouldn't play correctly. I tried everything in the article "Audio does not play or plays incorrectly" and it didn't work. I thought it might be the system, so I waited until the new version came out. When it did, I downloaded it, but my CDs still don't play correctly. I tried everything in the article again and it still didn't work. Now I'm at a dead end. Help!

I have the exact same problem...!!! I posted a couple of weeks ago and still no help. Not only do I not get any audio from my CD's, I cannot RIP music from them either. All audio and drive functionality work with all other players. Drive diagnostics report no problems. I am seriously considering switching to another MP3 player. (All this after purchasing multiple IPOD's) I run Vista Home Premium on a new DELL. I have no other issues as of yet.

• Copying Audio CDs in not-iTunes format--how?

My MacPro has two optical drives, and I was trying to copy an audio CD from one drive to the other. (Of note, my Preferences do not specify iTunes as the program with which to open audio CDs.) As soon as I insert an Audio CD, all files on the CD seem to show up as iTunes files. When I drag them over to a blank CD and burn it (using the burn button on the blank CD's folder), they're burned as iTunes files. That's fine for computer-to-computer sharing, but if I want to listen on a car CD player, it wont recognize the files. So, how do I copy the songs in the original format without transforming them in any way? Thanks.

Hi Joseph,
You can create a playlist in iTunes as previously mentioned and then click the burn button at the bottom right hand side. It doesn't actually matter what format they are in, [from what I can tell/have experienced], as it will burn playlists in the .AIFF format anyway which is playable in the car or home audio system.
I have a mixture of AAC, MPEG & Apple lossless formats and even when mixed in a playlist they burn fine - and the same. Toast is an excellent program and does a great job of burning all-sorts so is recommended :0)
I only posted in case you were going to change the format of all your imported files to .AIFF before burning as it is time and space consuming!
Hope that helps?
Regards
B

• MBP superdrive does not accept commercial audio cds

Hi people,
My superdrive mostly does not accept commercial audio cds when i keep on trying it accepts them sometimes but you cannot say under which circumstances.
I already tried to resolve this with a "reset -all" in the single user mode but this just lead to acceptance of the first inserted audio cd afterwards it was problematic again to load audio cds.
Does anybody know something that helps to make the drive reliably accept all cds of this kind?
THANKS

Yep, to me this is an issue with your optical drive.
Contact Apple (in the USA call 800-275-2273 for other locations check [this list|http://www.apple.com/support/contact/phone_contacts.html]) or carry it in to an Apple retail store for repairs. Be sure to [make an appointment|http://www.apple.com/retail] first or you may wait a long time to talk to a Mac Genius. Tell them what has been done and get it repaired.
Best of luck.

• How do I solve unwanted playback distortion on certain audio CDs?

I am having issues with distortion either playing back, or ripping certain audio CDs. I have checked the audio settings, it's nothing to do with them. I have checked the CDs in other devices, it's not them. I've tried other CDs, they work fine. I've tried playing audio files, they play just fine.
I've performed a system restore back to the 7th August that hasn't solved it (but I might try going back further). And it doesn't seem to be anything to do with my software as I'm having issues on both iTunes and Windows Media Player 12.
I'm operating Windows 7 Home premuim on a HP Pavillion g6 1207sa. I'm at my wits end as I seem to have tried everything and thus far have got nowhere. Help!

Thanks for your reply. Sorry I wasn't specific about this. I get distortion in iTunes when I play straight from this particular CD and when I import it. With QuickTime, I get no distortion when I play straight from the CD, but (I hadn't tried this before but I just gave it a go) I do get distortion when I play the .m4a file created by iTunes. So presumably it's something iTunes is doing when it processes the .aiff file from the CD.
At the moment the import settings are:
Import using: AAC Encoder
Setting: High Quality (128 kbps)
with the 'Use error correction...' box checked.
I've never had to touch them before. Is there a better setting to use for importing early CDs?
Thanks.

simple : you put itunes application in a folder. then you reinstall itunes 4.7 for example. then put 4.7 at the end of itunes application name, same with itunes 5. then drop each of them in the dock. decide where you want to have all the playlists so you don't have to switcha ll the time between them. then when you need to listen to a cd or import mp3, you launch itunes 4.7. then the unknown artist folder in your home folder/music will be placed in a music folder somewhere on your HD. create playlist from this folder.
then you activate itunes 5 for ipod sync or any other purpose. when itunes 6 will be finally updated, you remove itunes 5 and the home/music files of itunes 5, then reinstall the new itunes 6, which will normally take over the playlists of 4.7.
apple makes it not simple but more and more complex so it has the greatness of sophistication and class but the weakness of complexity and bugs ! hope this does not last !
