Cannot create the internet website in 1024x768 on Tecra A9

This is my problem. I've always worked on a Toshiba Satellite laptop with a square screen (75" wide). The resolution is set at 1024 x 768 ( the maximum) . +On this format I based all lay-out applications for my wordpress weblog; font size and picture sizes.+
Now I have a new laptop at the side, Toshiba Tecra A9, it has a 82,5" screen and the resolution is Vista-set at a maximum of 1680 x 1050.
Great screen quality, except for one thing: the reproduction of my blog pages (and actually all of internet website pages) is ridiculous!
The pages no longer fill out 80% of the monitor screen space, but only 50%. This dwarfed bar that once was my blog page is literally floating in an otherwise empty space.
OK, I do understand that a standard internetpage has to fill out the new widescreen monitors somehow. But it happens in all the wrong ways. In comparison with my 'old' screen image, the font of my texts is now blown up to screaming size, while at the same time the posted images have +shrunk.+ This means substantial loss of details.
I found out that I can 'restore' all this by using the Zoom utility and enlarge the view to 150%, the blogpage will cover almost all of the screen space and the images become wonderfully large. But the already blown up text expands as well- no longer screaming at viewers, but thundering...
This can't be the way it works. To begin with: no internetsurfer will take the trouble to fiddle about with the magnifying glass option.
Now I could +reduce+ the font sizes in the HTML section of my blog to obtain a normal effect. But that means, that on my old screen (and I assume on that of all others who still work with an 'oldfashioned' 3/4 screen), the texts will show up too small and become unreadable.
I have checked my Tecra screen configuration over and over again, can't find any fault there.
I have experimented with various resolution choices, it's obvious that the Tecra screen is designed for the maximum result. .
So what is happening, and how can I correct it without losing out on one of two different screening systems?

It's not a website, it's a wordpress weblog, gipsyman. Unfortunately I can't change any of it's values, or I would have done so already. Like expanding the left and the right border of the logpage, to fill the screen better. Mind you, the problem does not only occur with my weblog, it applies to every webpage I open.
Including this one. On my old 3/4 monitor screen this page is a normal, decent looking forum and I can read the threads easily. On my newer laptop with +widescreen+ monitor it's an altogether different story. The lines and letters are so tiny that I have to activate the Zoom utility for at least 125% to be able to read your reply...
I simply cannot believe that all users of a widescreen monitor are obliged to do the same. I know a few widescreen users, and they all respond with 'What do you mean?'
But what I get to see on my state-of-the-art laptop just makes litttle sense.
Of course I'm gonna try your advise, the Firefox extension. Maybe it solves the problem at least on +my+ side. But I consider it odd that I need such a tool to be able to internet like I used to. I mean, the 'oldfashioned' 1024x768 belongs to a notebook that I bought less than 3 years ago...
