Cannot "cut" files in Finder

How come when I try to cut(cmd+x) i cant do it and in the edit menu cut is grayed out? I dont want to have to make copies of everything for moving large files around.

So that people don't inadvertently lose files by using the clipboard for something else or logging out without pasting it.
In no way to sound cocky, but would this really be a problem? Take Windows for example, cut/pasting files works like a charm (or well it works).
Reason for this, is that the "move" command of file(s) or folder(s) is first processed when a "cut" and "paste" command have been issued in succession.
Also moving the data into "the clibboard" on the "cut"-command is not viable, because either to clibboard is in memory in which case it is likely that the item being cut'ed can't fit, or it is on disk in which case a cut/paste command would double the IO, as opposed to the previous model.
Don't take this as an offense, just trying to get a reasonable discussion on the topic.
I myself have only recently bought myself my first Mac, and this is one of the things that seems odd to me.
Moving by drag-drop is very intuitive, but nevertheless I have met people who just stares blank into my eyes when I mention "dragging" stuff.

  • Cannot duplicate files in finder

I recently ugraded to Lion, and am just realizing now that I cannot duplicate files (Command D) in the finder.  The progress window shows the copy being made, but the duplicate file, which used to show up just under the original file as "file name copy" does not appear.  When I do a spotlight search, the copied file is nowhere to be seen.  Also tried doing an Option-drag-to-finder.  That didn't work either.  I was trying to make a copy of an image and then rename the new file to send to someone.  I had to go through Preview, then Unlock the file and then save as another name.  A ridiculously long process.  Anyone have any ideas?

did you try selecting the item in the finder
    press cmd + c
    press cmd + v
presto, you have a dupe of the file that has it's name appended with the number 1.

  • Cannot move files with Finder

Experiencing erratic behavior with Finder.  I am trying to move several files from a folder to the application "PDF Toolkit" and clicking dragging is not working.
Are there settings that alter click drag behavior?  Can Finder be reset?

  • Finder cannot open files in the "volume" format.

I had to downgrade from the second Yosemite beta in order to run one of my applications for work that didn't run on Yosemite. I've successful reinstalled Mavericks to the chagrin of finder not working at all. Whenever I mount a DMG I get "Finder cannot open files in the “volume” format." Also, whenever I click to open a folder or a new window in finder, it just crashes and relaunches. I'm going to try to do a fresh install of Mavericks and recover from a backup. Let me know if you guys have faced this same issue and found a solution.
I also had to regain admin privileges for my user which I have done successfully.

I fixed my problem by installing Mavericks again. No need to fully restore.

  • 1) Select a range of files in Finder; and 2) Cut files!

    Two questions:
    1) Why is it not possible to select a range of files in Thumbnail view in the Finder while pressing Shift...works fine in the List view? Makes no sense at all!
    2) Why is it not possible to cut files in the finder using "CMD   X" or "Cut" ... I can only copy or drag an drop? That ***** bigtime!

    1) Not really, what I want to do is select the first file then press shift and then select the last file of the range. Usually this should select all the files between the first and the last in the range (and that actually happens in the list view) ...but NOT in the stupid Thumbnail view (which I need to organize my pictures).

  • When trying to download & install Firefox 5.0.1 into a Mac, I get a message saying that Firefox cannot be installed because libnsscksi.dylib is in use. Any idea how to locate and close that file? Finder does not recognize it. Thanks!

Tried to install both Firefox 5.0 and 5.0.1, and received the same error message that a file ending in .dylib was in use. I cannot locate that file, and Finder does not recognize it.

I have a Power PC Mac with OS 10.5.8 and Firefox 3.6.28, the latest versions supported on my machine, and all of my plug-ins are the latest versions available for that browser version. I too get the warning message all the time and it is very annoying. I have never had any "security" problems, and I don't go along with this imperative to always be upgrading equipment. Don't these corporate geeks understand that we're in a global economic contraction and a lot of us are unemployed/underemployed? They want us to be good consumers and "switch to a newer computer" but I can't afford that. Like, if I can't fix my old car, I won't be able to drive. What I want to know is: '''how to disable the warning message?''' Thank you in advance.

  • Cannot copy files from CD or DVD using Finder.

    Hi,
I cannot copy files and folders from a CD or DVD to my home folder or any folder therein using Finder. I just get the "Not Permitted" symbol next to the mouse pointer when I try to drag a folder out of the CD (or DVD) to my home folder.
I have checked that I have sufficient permissions to perform this operation and when I copy files from the CD or DVD using the command line, it works without any hassles.
This is extremely strange and I cannot think of why it should happen.
A solution would be most welcome as I would prefer not to have to drop into a command line when I have to copy files from CDs or DVDs.

    Apple iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4)

I am experiencing the same problem: after undoing a copy in the Finder from my CD-drive to my Seagate 200GB FW-drive, I am no longer able to copy single files in the Finder from other drives than my harddisk. I can copy from my hard disk to my external harddisk, I can move and copy files within the harddisk, but I cannot copy from my external hard drive or my CD/DVD-drive to my harddisk or from my CD/DVD-drive to my external hard drive or the internal harddisk.
What is increasingly weird, is that I can easily copy two or more files using drag and drop! I also get a nice green + sometimes when trying to move the files, but there is just no response.
    I have tried the following:
    0) rebooted.
    1) rm com.apple.finder.plist + killall -9 Finder
    2) done that in the finder using cmd-alt-esc to kill the finder.
    3) removed cache files using Yasu from http://jimmitchelldesigns.com/yasu.html, including rebooting
    4) Doublechecked permissions, including locked bits
    5) run periodic everything from the Terminal
    6) repaired permissions
    7) checked the hard disk using disk utility
    8) Logged in as another admin user to no avail.
I can use the Terminal to copy the files without any problems, and I can open files in other applications and save them where ever from there, but the Finder refuses to let me.
May Gods wrath kill the Finder for good! I certainly hope 10.5 will show a new Finder!

The document “2147483647-11-06 06_00_00.FinalCutCopy” could not be opened. Final Cut Pro cannot open files of this type.
I was importing media, and closed out of the media before stoping the media import. This is how the file saved on the hard drive.
I need to get this file into a format that FCP can open. Is there a way to export a .FinalCutCopy file into a .mov file???
Any insights would be VERY HELPFUL!

I was able to figure it out. I renamed the file type to a .mov format and quicktime was able to open it. Then I saved that file format on the desktop, and imported in after I opened FCP. The file then imported and I was able to access the whole video clip I had! Thanks for your help!

  • Cannot copy files from my network using finder

If I try to copy files from my NAS or my PC to my Macmini running Leopard, I cannot copy files that are larger than 64kb. Otherwise I get an error message. Interestingly, if I use the cp command in the console instead, he can copy the file, but the file is corrupt in the sense that it is smaller than the original and not working. Weirdest thing is that I can access the same files from itunes or iphoto or vlc or whatever. Any ideas?

After the update I cannot connect to my router anymore

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

    - connect the wdtvlivehub via SMB, CIFS
    - Try with AFP but i get a error message

-Basically i try everything suggest in this board and over the web but nothing resolve the problem.
The file sometimes been copied but i have to try a billion times....not so comfort in this.
    What i have to do?
P.S. Sorry for my bad english.

    Hi,
We often see this file in use when the file has not been closed. Is it just a regular file that was opened and how did you open it? I use AppleScript to close it if it was opened with AppleScript.
Edited: try this: Run Script Editor. Enter:
set f to choose file -- select the file
    close access f
    run it in Script Editor.

  • Cannot delete file Windows2Local/Components/{multiple}.settings

Every time I shutdown JSE it shows a couple of ugly messages saying:
"Cannot delete file Windows2Local/Components/classes.settings in C:\Documents and Settings\Joost\.jstudio\Ent8\config"
"Cannot delete file Windows2Local/Components/sources.settings in C:\Documents and Settings\Joost\.jstudio\Ent8\config"
"Cannot delete file Windows2Local/Components/watches.settings in C:\Documents and Settings\Joost\.jstudio\Ent8\config"
"Cannot delete file Windows2Local/Components/properties.settings in C:\Documents and Settings\Joost\.jstudio\Ent8\config"
"Cannot delete file Windows2Local/Components/designpattern.settings in C:\Documents and Settings\Joost\.jstudio\Ent8\config"
"Cannot delete file Windows2Local/Components/threads.settings in C:\Documents and Settings\Joost\.jstudio\Ent8\config"
Assuming that JSE had some problems to access my profile (oh, how I *hate* Windows...) I wanted to change the JSE working directory to C:\Projects\Java Studio Enterprise, but I can't find the place within the Tools|Options where I can set that. Help!
    Regards,
    Joost

Thanks for the reply. I added the -userdir option, and now it complains:
"Cannot delete file Windows2Local/Components/ComponentPalette.settings" in C:\Projects\Java Studio Enterprise\config"
"Cannot delete file Windows2Local/Components/CollaborationExplorer.settings" in C:\Projects\Java Studio Enterprise\config"
Hmmm, it seems to me that - although the number of error messages has been reduced - JSE is still not very happy about something. It would be nice if it was a bit more precise in its problem description.

    Joost

  • Cannot copy file because it is in use

On my new iMac I have some files that I have downloaded and want to archive on an external drive. For some reasons Finder complains that the file cannot be copied because it is in use. And it is not. I have tried all that I have found on the Internet including compressing the file and then copying it. But even the compressed file appears to Finder to be in use. Anything you can suggest would be appreciated.

    Thanks, Don.
You are correct. I agree that no one besides me would know what I have or have not tired. Sorry, Kappy - thanks for having responded to my message. I thought it would be a given that anyone smart enough to find Apple Support Forum would have known to try some initial stuff before getting here. Never the less, I should have mentioned it in another way and been clear.
I have found a solution - for anyone else who may stumble on this discussion. I have sort of succeeded with using the Ternminal to manually copy the files that Finder refuses to copy. But now I can't do that either. It seems the problem is with large files and based on questions of others on the general internet, that it is not just me - it could be the OS. Some of these files I am dealing with are between 1.0 to 6.0 GB.
    Thanks again, folks.
