Cannot delete file from trash - tried EVERYTHING

Wow. I have an incredibly stubborn file (named :VBL followed by a bunch of non English symbols) in the trash that I cannot get rid of. I have tried all the usual methods of deleting, secure deleting, using Cocktail, and literally _EVERY SINGLE METHOD_ listed on both of these websites:
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/trash.html
http://osxfaq.com/Tutorials/LearningCenter/HowTo/Trash/page2.ws
All to no avail. There still is one file in my trash that will not go away. Any other alternatives?

That worked!! Thank you so much. Can't believe I went through all those other methods and it was as simple as a Windows chkdsk. I wonder how it even happened that the Windows partition created an undeletable file in my OS X partition??
it actually wasn't in the OS X partition. it was still in the windows partition but due to some file system errors in the windows partition it became visible (but not deletable) from OS X.

Pressing return will get past this screen as there is a button at the bottom right of iTunes which you likely cannot see.
Set your screen resolution to at least 1024x768 to see this button.

  • Unable to delete file from trash because it's "in use" not locked.

I'm unable to delete a file from trash. I keep getting the following message: "The operation can’t be completed because the item is in use."  I've confirmed the file isn't locked and I've tried renaming it but still no luck. I'm running OSX 10.8.4. Any thoughts?

Check the 'More Like This' discussions on the right hand column.  I suspect you may find the answer there.

  • How to permanently delete files from trash?

I usually see TV series online. Every time I visit to the website, it automatically downloads a Mac_Installer file to my Downloads folder. I delete the file without opening it and secure empty the trash. When I visit the website again, the same file is downloaded to my Downloads folder, and the "previous deleted file" from the trash can reappears on it. How to solve this matter? My computer is a MacBook Pro and is running OS X Mavericks.
    Thanks.

Try erasing free space using Disk Utility.
    Erase free disk space
When you delete files in Mac OS X, your Mac deletes the information used to access the deleted files but doesn't physically remove them. Although the space used by the deleted files appears as free space, the deleted files remain on the disk until new files are written over them. As a result, these files can be recovered. Erasing free space does not delete any other files on your disk besides the ones that you already deleted.
After the drive is connected, launch the Disk Utility application in any of the following ways:
Type the first few letters of its name into Spotlight. Select it from the results.
Go Finder > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
Go Launchpad > Utilities > Disk Utility
Once you are in the Disk Utility app, select the disk or partition you would like to erase from the left.
    Select the Erase tab.
Choose the Erase Free Space button.
Use the Slider to choose how many times you would like to write over the free space.
    Select Erase Free Space.
Note: After this process starts, you can cancel it at any time without harming any of your data. You might see a message stating that you are running out of disk space. This is normal and to be expected. You can ignore this message.
When the process is complete, you should have the same amount of free space. If you do not have the same amount of free space, try restarting the computer.
    I hope I helped.

  • Cannot delete files from batch file

    This is a test case.
If  have the following in a .bat file. If I run it from CMD box, it works fine.
    forfiles /P c:\scripts\ /S /M u_ex*.log  /C "cmd /c del @PATH" > c:\scripts\output.txt
But If I run it from a scheduled task, it generates the output.txt file which contains a list of the files it SHOULD have deleted, but nothing gets deleted.
The scheduled task runs as a user who is member of administrators group, so has full permissions.
I have also checked the box "run with highest privileges"
anyone know why it wont delete files from a scheduled task ?

  • Can't Delete Files From Trash. Tried Everything!

While cleaning my external harddrive, I sent movie files to the trash. However, upon emptying the trash, three Unix Executable Files remained. I cannot for the life of me find a way to delete them. The "Get Info" page says the files are "Zero bytes (1 kb on disk)," and that I have "unknown access" the directory for the files is "/Volumes/FreeAgent GoFlex Drive/.Trashes/501." I attempted to recreate the folder locations on the external, but when I try to drag the files from the trash back to the drive, I get either error code 36 or 8072. Ive tried to securely delete and also tried third party applications to no avail. However, When I eject the harddrive, my trash is empty. It is only when the harddrive is plugged in that the trash is full. Please Help!

nevermind. I repaired the disk and it deleted the files

  • Cannot delete files from external HD error code-50

I keep getting error code-50 when trying to delete a file from my external HD (western digital).  I've restarted everything, it is not a special character problem.  I have been using this HD for about a year and this problem just recently started.  Also I cannot run disk utility verify because the HD does not show up in disk utility.  Not sure if it ever did but I never had problems until now.

That sounds like cause for concern, but I don't know whether it's connected with the -50 error.
Do you have backup to restore from if things take a turn for the worse?

  • Cannot delete message from Trash

    Hi
I have more than 10,000 deleted messages under Trash, in a folder named "on my mac".
When I try to empty that folder o just empy the whole Trash, Mail crashes due to the high volume.
I would like to delete those messages from the Finder, but I cannot find there the "on my mac" folder.
Any ideas on how to get rid of the deleted messages?
    Thank you.
    Eneko

The messages are .emlx files, but there is an index file that will still point to them unless they are deleted in mail.
    Try opening a few of the ( you say it's 60 000 now? it was 10 000 before ) messages - I hope you'll get a message saying they can't be displayed.
If you do, go to the mail menu Mail-Mailbox-Rebuild . this should re-work the index so it reflects the true number of messages.
Having said that - have you tried just deleting the mailbox, rather than trying to empty it? highlight the 'on my mac' trash mailbox & choose Mail-Mailbox-Delete.
Failing all that - I'd be tempted to move your wanted messages to various new mailboxes, ( in modest numbers per mailbox - perhaps not numbered in the 10 000's?) make a copy somewhere safe of the entire Mail folder, then force Mail to start from scratch & import your old wanted messages into mail.
To do this - after you've created your new mailboxes & moved the messages you want to keep into them; copied the Mail folder and Quit Mail
In Finder locate home/library/mail/ & trash that folder.
Then locate home/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist & move it onto the desktop, just in case things go wrong. ( I mean Move, don't leave the original file in the Preferences folder )
Open Mail again - you'll be asked for account details ( you wrote them down first?)
Just in case you get asked "do you want to import..." at this stage - Don't do it.
Then. from Mail, use Mail-File-Import Mailboxes & point it to the "mailboxes" folder inside the copy of the Mail folder you made.
Choose only the new mailboxes that you made, & moved your wanted messages to . Import them & they should all be viewable in mail.
Try the 'rebuild' or delete mailbox first though - & if any of the above isn't crystal clear - ask before you proceed.

  • Cannot delete file from external hard drive (error code 36) in Finder, but Terminal is ok

I have a relatively new Macbook Pro Retina 15" and have a Western Digital 1 TB Passport.  I've been using the passport for about a year now without any problems on older Macbooks in my house.  I used to be able to read and write to this drive no problem.  I am using the Paragon NTFS for Mac software in order to read and write to the NTFS drive.  When I navigate through the drive in Finder, if I try to create a new folder, I do not have a problem.  If I try to delete that folder I just created, I get this error:
The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “untitled folder” can’t be read or written.
    (Error code -36)
The folder has nothing in it whatsoever.  I just created it.  But if I go to Terminal and I run
    rm -rf "untitled folder"
This works fine.  Why is Terminal acting different than Finder?  This does not happen on my other Macbooks.  Thanks in advance.

Thanx for such qucik reply!!! The pages were great, it had an answer for my problem, but unfortunately it also involved me dealing with it only on the MacIntosh HD itself, not on mounted external drive I suppose... So it didn't work they say that there is an icon in the left corner indicating locked folder - I don't see any icon on it. It says you can untick the box to unlock the folder - there is no tick to be unticked. Finally, they say that if I don't have permition or rights I cannot delete it. But how do i change permittion which already says that i can read and write in it? So everything appears to be normal only I cannot delete it. there is not even any warnig telling me I don't have enough rights, it just requires the password and after me typing it in it makes the sound of scraping paper but does nothing more. I aslo had some problems with emptying Trash after being seemingly succesful with one file and had got so far to have them appear in the Trash (no clue how this one actully got there though..) I followd the advice and emptied the Trash with Terminal. The Folder is still there but it shows 0 Kb... So far so good BUT: It is still on the external drive, so I obviously only managed to copy it into the Trash!!! Phew, innit a bit too tight to poor owners, this macbook?? I want my rights back!

I recently updated to 10.9.2. Nothing seemed to have changed but the trash folder is acting funny. Now I am not able to delete any file from the trash. I select empty trash securely and then the dialog box displaying the number of files to be deleted appears and disappears in 1-2 seconds and the file/s dont get deleted.
Is there a way out of this?

  • Cannot delete files from TC because they are in use?

Hi all, I have converted (SmartConverter) some avi files to my ITunes, now I am trying to remove/delete the old avi files from my Time Capsule but my Imac informes me that this is not possible because the avi files are in use. The last is not the case, at least no by me, and even after a re start I am getting the same messages. even avi files that are not converted are giving me troubles. Before the system says they are in use I am getting a message saying that the files cannot be moved to the bin. I have looked on the net for an solution but without any real luck. I hope somebody can assist me with this. Thanks Prond.

  • Cannot delete files from desktop

    I run the latest version of Lion OS, on a MacBook Pro. All software is maintained and updated. I have a couple of files on my desktop, which cannot be deleted. They are BACK-UP files from Keynote and PowerPoint. The files cannot be moved (physically on the desktop, they stay put), and TRASH is not accepting them;
The item “Backup of Wholesale Sales Meeting Sea Island-powerpoint.key~1” can’t be moved to the Trash because it can’t be deleted.
Any idea on how to delete them permanently?
    Thanks

    Hello Denis Post1
You could remove it with the Terminal (Applications > Utilities).
Enter the following command (copy & paste) followed by your password, you will not see nothing, while entering it and then <enter>
    sudo rm ~/Desktop/*
for the files you confirm with a simple "y" they will be deleted. If you want to keep some other files type "n"
    hope this helps
    marek
