Cannot detect airport extreme from windows 8

I launched airport utility, airport extreme is seen, the base station with name and ID (which is the mac address) is shown. Attempting to "detect" this airport fails, error code -4 is the only result. Every time. It seems I have internet connectivity. But I want to manage it from my windows 8 machine so that I can assign a WEP (or WEP2) password.
Why the failure to detect?
Ed

I have the 1st gen AX, so it is 802.11 a/b/g - I should have mentioned that from the git-go. So I am not liking that airPort utilities on Windows supports base stations with 802.11n only. Hmmmmmm ... Another Apple product I can bring to the electronic recycling center in town? I haven 't used this AX for a couple of years, decided to bring it out of disuse to extend wireless to my shop. Too bad also, that it cannot be managed by my iPhone or iPad.
I'll seek out a friend with a Mac computer. It will still configure an ancient AX, non?

  • I can't see hard drive attached to Airport extreme from Windows XP computer

I have a Windows XP computer on my network. I can no longer see the network hard drive attached to Airport Extreme from the XP computer. I can see it with all the MACs on my network and all the Windows 7 computers. I can connect to the internet with the Windows XP computer. I previously had no problem seeing the network hard drive attached to the airport extreme from the XP computer and one day it just disappeared. I have deleted and reinstalled Bonjour, not just Bonjour print services. I can print to a network printer that is not attached to the Airport Extreme. Help!

Well, I'm stumped. I spent an hour on the phone with Apple support-- they ran through the scenarios I had already been through, and they came up with nothing useful. I ended up taking a second 160gb HD that was formatted NTFS, and formatted if for HFS+. This drive was visible through Finder. I took the same drive, formatted it for FAT32 and, surprise, surprise, NOTHING VISIBLE.
The "just works" philosophy is OK, but it's bunk when it comes to network drive support. I'm doubting the wisdom of this purchase now.
$2500 for a computer that can't connect to a network drive that can be seen by an $500 Dell laptop?
The issue simply seems to be this: put a FAT32 drive on another box, and it can be shared by Macs and Windows boxes.
Put that same FAT32 box on an AirPort Express, and my Mac is BLIND. It can't see the drive.

  • How can I open ports on my AirPort Extreme, from WINDOWS?

I have an Airport Extreme as my router, and I have a Windows-based computer. I need to open ports on the router (ironically, it is for my Apple TV).
However, even though I can use the Airport Utility for Windows (latest version 5.5.3), I cannot open ports from the application.
Everywhere I look, I am supposed to have a firewall tab in the Advanced section, but I do not have it. The only tabs that I have in Advanced are:
    Logging and Statistics
    MobileMe
    IPv6

  • Powerbook cannot detect Airport Extreme base station

I bought a new Airport extreme and cannot connect to it wirelessly. I called and tried to do everything to fix the problem but ended up having to have a replacement Airport sent to me. The new one arrives and same problem. I can see other wireless networks but cannot see the one from mine. When restarting the base station, I see my network for a second but it goes away and I can't connect to it. I'm thinking it might be my computer but I can see other networks... any suggestions on how to rectify the problem?

Ok, thanks. I can only see, at this time, five choices:
Try each step one-at-a-time, until successful. After each step, try accessing the AEBSn via Ethernet.
o Shut down the AirPort Utility, and then, restart it.
o Unplug the AEBSn, wait at least 5 minutes, and then plug it back in.
o Reinstall the AirPort Utility on your PC to rule out any issues with the initial installation.
o Install the AirPort Utility on another device (PC or Mac) to see if it can access the base station.
o Perform a "hard" reset of the AEBS.

  • How to access a USB disk drive connected to Airport Extreme from a Windows 7 PC?

How can I access a USB disk drive connected to Airport Extreme from a Windows 7 PC?

...Called it a roaming network.  Wireless mode is create a wireless network. I have checked allow this network to be extended.  Probably need to uncheck that?
Yes, that option should be deselected as it only pertains to when both routers are interconnected by wireless. Since you have a roaming network, they of course, would be interconnected by Ethernet.
The other important settings for a roaming network are:
Each router must have a unique station name. For the AirPort, this would be called its Base Station Name. I believe the default station name for Linksys routers is: linksys
Each router must broadcast a wireless network with an identical Network Name. For the Linksys, Network Name is the same as its SSID.
Each router wireless network must use the same Wireless Security type and password. The Linksys WRT-54G is capable of up to WPA2 Personal. If you have it set to this level of security, the AirPort should be at the same setting.
Make sure that each router is not on the same Radio Channel for the 2.4 GHz radio. In the US, there are basically only three non-overlapping channels: 1, 6, or 11. Set each so that they don't use the same channel but use of those three choices.

  • How to setup the airport extreme for window xp

How to setup the airport extreme for window xp

Sorry, I forgot to mention a few points:
    1) I don't have the Airport Extreme base station;
    2) My PowerBook is connect to the internet thru wired connection with the Built-in Ethernet;
    3) The Airport is turned on, but my PSP's scan cannot locate the PowerBook at all (while it find someone else's network)
So, I wonder if I can just connect my PSP to the built-in Airport in the PowerBook directly. So that I can have internet access on my PSP.

  • How do I connect my airport extreme to windows 8.1

how do I connect my airport extreme to windows 8.1

Connect an Ethernet cable between the U-verse router's LAN port to the WAN (circle-of-dots) port on the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS). Since you will have two routers in series, you will want to reconfigure the AEBS as a bridge. (ref: AirPort Utility > Select the AEBS > Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection tab > Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode))

  • Macbook cannot find airport extreme to configure it

macbook pro cannot find airport extreme to configure it to join an existing network.

By default, the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) will be broadcasting a wireless network with a name like, Apple Network NNNNNN. Be sure that the MBP is connected to this wireless network BEFORE trying to access with the AirPort Utility.
If this still doesn't work, try temporarily connecting the AX directly to the MBP by Ethernet, and then, try accessing it with the AirPort Utility.

  • Extend Wireless Network using a Telstra technicolor Gateway wireless Router to Airpot extreme but Airport will only except join not extend and I can not get a network on the Airpor Extreme ethernet ports but can ping Airport extreme from Technicolor Rout/

Extend Wireless Network using a Telstra technicolor Gateway wireless Router to Airpot extreme but Airport will only except "join a wireless network (which it does) not "extend a wireless network" (Led turns yellow and I can not get a network working on the Airpor Extreme ethernet ports but can ping Airport extreme from Technicolor Router.
    Airport gets it address DHCP.

Funny how I can ping the Extreme but the Hard Ethernet ports dont seem to work correctly.
When the AirPort Extreme is configured to "Join" a wireless network, the Ethernet ports are not enabled.
Oddly, the AirPort Express has a special feature that will allow it to to "Join" virtually any wireless network.....and the Ethernet port can be enabled. So, an Express would work for your purpose to provide an Ethernet connection to the media player. This assumes that the Express is located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from your main router.
Note that the Express will not provide any additional wireless coverage when it "Joins".

  • I purchased an airport Extreme from germany. I would like to know if I can use it in the USA, and would I need anything else apart from a new power cord for the same ?

I purchased an Airport extreme from Germany to be used as a router. It worked very well over there and I plan to use it in the States. Now, since the power output is different in both USA and Germany, would I only need to buy a new power cord from USA ?

The AirPort Extreme will run on 100-240 Volts and 50/60 Hz, so it will operate just about anywhere in the world as far as power goes, if you have the right power cord or AC wall adapter. A voltage converter is not needed.
But, European wireless standards are different than the U.S., so you will need to avoid using Channels 12 and 13, which are not authorized for use in the U.S. Otherwise, things should operate OK.
For all the details on wireless standards in different parts of the world, see this document:

Can I prevent an AirPort Extreme from "discovering " and connecting to other Airport devices on the same network ?

Not sure I understand your question.
What is the AirPort Extreme doing now that you don't want it to do? What does it "discover"?  How is it connecting other devices on the same network?

Can you access an external HD plugged into the Airport Extreme from a remote location over the internet?
Also can the content on the exteral HD plugged into the airport be accessed by the TV to stream content?

The first question answer is yes..
The question is asked continually.. please read the methods that Tesserax wrote up so well.
    See remote access tip here.
    AirPort
Also can the content on the exteral HD plugged into the airport be accessed by the TV to stream content?
Unlikely .. because your TV uses a system called DLNA.. and Apple do not support DLNA in any way shape or form.. because they are fully committed to iTunes.. Apple routers have no media extensions.. unlike most other decent brands now which mostly do support multimedia.
Having said that.. you can place your video files on the external hard disk.. and play them.. but you need a player.. a real player not an apple TV which is a streamer.. eg A WD Live TV can play video files.. because it is a media player.. unlike your TV or apple TV.

  • Windows XP cannot see Airport Extreme SSID

I just bought a new Airport Extreme Base Station and connected it to my home router. My iMc was connected in minutes. But I am having a lot of trouble connecting my wife's Dell PC (XP SP2) using a Dell 1450 Wireless USB adapter (a/b/g). I have tried no encryption, WEP, and WPA, but in all cases I cannot even see the broadcasted SSID from the base station. I have also tried a number of different channels 1,6,8,11, but in all cases I never see the station in the list of available wireless networks.
To see if this was a windows issue, I brought home my work laptop (also XP SP2), and it had no problem seeing the SSID, and also connecting in all the above cases. Whats even more perplexing is that all the computers are right next to each other, and my wife's computer can see about 10 of meighbor's access points, but not the new base station!
Needless to say, it has been very frustrating, and I am considering returning the airport if I can't get the wife's XP connected.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Mark

I can see a couple of possibilities.
    * It is possible to set up AirPort (or any wireless network) so that the SSID doesn't show up - ever. In such cases, it's necessary to manually type in the SSID to connect. (Usually, it's only the first time - most devices can remember the SSID name, and it's not a problem). Unfortunately for you, I don't use Wintendo that much, and don't have the steps needed to connect to a hidden network memorized - I'm actually more familiar with the process to do it with an Xbox than I am with a Windows PC.
    * To see if this is the case, use the AirPort utility, manual config. Find the "Wireless" tab, and then choose "wireless options" There should be a checkbox named "create a closed network" If it is checked, then the SSID is in fact hidden, and that's why you aren't finding the SSID.
I realize that you were able to see the SSID from another machine, and that is puzzling that your wife's PC can't see it.
You've already eliminated the possibility that the radio is simply turned off on your wife's PC, as you can see your neighbor's wireless SSID(s).
I'd suggest trying a different encryption, as some older devices can't use the newer methods - but you've covered that base too.
To be honest, I've got a couple of issues of my own with the 802.11n base station... the latest firmware 'update' seems to have been a step backwards...

  • Dell and Windows xp cannot add Airport Extreme

I got this Dell 6400 from my last job. (would have preferred a mac)
I've got a an Airport Extreme as my wifi and have an Airport Express for my stereo. Problem: Can't choose multiple speakers in iTunes - been through the airport utility, have no security, nor firewalls, but when I go to choose to "join network"...the one I have on the airport is not seen.
The unit is working, just can't get both to join up. argh.

Welcome to the discussions forums seakerman.
Most Windows problems are due to wireless security or firewalls, but you addressed that. So, I was at a loss to explain but I'm wondering if the following (bold face) is a clue:
but when I go to choose to "join network"...*the one I have on the airport* is not seen.
The Express and Extreme need to be on the same network. Are they?

  • AirPort Extreme and Windows XP

My sister brought home a Dell desktop from work today, running Windows XP. It doesn't seem too old, being a 2.7 Ghz Pentium 4. I set it up and plugged it into a network jack in our house. All the network settings in Windows say that the computer is connected to the network, but upon loading IE or Firefox, neither will load a webpage.  I then tried installing the AirPort Extreme software and restarting the base, but that did not help either.
Currently in our house, we run mainly Mac systems - an older G5 tower, a Powerbook G4, a MacBook Pro and a Dell Mini laptop, all of which have no connection problems. What am I missing on this desktop that is preventing the connection?

Can the Dell see other computers on your local network and just not able to access the Internet? If so, then there is a good chance that while at work it was configured to use a specific proxy server for Internet access. Since you wouldn't have this server at home, is most likely the reason that the Dell is not gaining Internet access.
Are you allowed to change this computer's settings?
If so, to reset Internet Explorer's proxy server settings back to its default value:
At a command prompt, type the following command, and then, press ENTER: Inetcpl.cpl
On the Connections tab, click LAN Settings.
Enable (check) the Automatically detect settings check box.
Enable (check) the Bypass proxy server for local addresses check box.
Click OK two times to exit the Control Panel applet.
