Cannot detect IDE dvd drive

Happened after I changed my motherboard to a MSI G41M4-F.
No /dev/dvd or /dev/cdrom is created.
The BIOS recognises my dvd drive at IDE Master 1 and I am able to boot a live cd.

  • 785GTM-E45 SATA (AHCI) HDD and IDE DVD drive cannot be used together

I have bought 785GTM-E45, and installed a sata hdd and a IDE dvd drive on it.  the sata is set to ahci mode.  After install xp using f6 method and install all the drivers, I cannot find the dvd drive at all in windows.  I have to go into bios to set the sata ports back to IDE model to make the dvd appear again.
Anyone knows the reason?  It looks like a bios bug.  I am using the new v8 bios.

It is just annoying that this board has so many issues.  No vcore change, no gpu voltage change, v8 bios will freeze if entering processor details, and the issue in this current topic.  I have used at least three other brands' boards and never had any issue before.  Oh my, MSI...

  • DKA790GX Plat with SATA + IDE DVD drives

I have been running my mb with 2 x SATA HDs and 2 x IDE DVD. No problem.
In (re)building on older computer I had the need for an IDE DVD drive as the SATA was too new so I swapped out one of the IDE from my DKA790GX.
Now I can get the SATA DVD to work fine  on the DKA790GX but NOT the IDE. It seems to be working OK as it makes all the same noises as the SATA when I put in a disk. I have tried moving Jumpers and different IDE cable but can not get it to work.
In itself it is no big deal but I kinda like having an IDE around as it has got me out of scrapes a couple of times.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Alan

Perhaps it got damaged during the move. Have you tested it in your other system lately?
Thank you for the polite and quick answering! We would however like some more info. about the system you are talking about. PSU, processor, memory, graphics card.

  • Old MacBook Pro boots no further than the apple image and the ball spins aimlessly as if it cannot detect the hard drive

My old MacBook Pro displays the apple image on start up then hangs with the ball spinning continuously. Seems it cannot detect the hard drive. Can I start up holding down certain keys to bypass the problem. Running snow leopard and don't have a start up disk.

    Try the procedures in this support article;
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
You may also use the original install disk.  When you get to the point where the menu bar shows on top of the display, select Utilities.  The open Disk Utility from the drop down menu and try to repair the disk.
    Ciao.

  • I had to erase and reinstall mavericks to hd, now i cannot boot up , i get a folder with flashing Q mark and i cannot boot from dvd drive...Ideas please

    hi
its a long and sorry story, i have a imac running mavericks
a few days ago i noticed that the dvd drive was ejecting every disc i put in, so i decide to check hd with onyx and reset permissions etc
onyx said the smart status couldnt be checked and i should check hd using disk utility.
i did this and it came up that hd had errors , so i ran the repair facility....it came up with disk can not be repaired, reformat and reinstall mavericks
    this i did.
i  reinstalled mavericks into mac hd, which took about 3 hrs, i then rebooted and a folder with flashing Qmark appeared, i cant get past this at all.
i have tried to use internet recovery but it comes up with 6002f error, and the dvd drive still does not accept boot disk, so i am at a lose as to how to proceed
    anybody got any ideas?
    thanks

If your hard drive has SMART errors then it is failing and should be replaced. Disk Utility cannot fix SMART reported errors.

  • K7pro Bios doesn't detect my DVD drive

Hi, I'm very desapointed, so I try to contact directly the MSI home forum from France.
    I use a K7 pro (6195) since 4 years
+ AMD Athlon 600 MHz 128 Mo ram and Win 98 2nd Ed
I bought a TOSHIBA DVD driver SD M1612 a year ago
Up to today, it was detected from time to time by old Bios (1.0 ? 2003/02) and sometimes it didn't work on windows : random detection in fact !
I read in FAQ that for the same problem with an other DVD drive (HITACHI) we should upgrate the Bios.
I did it with the V1.8 version for Win 98 SE downloaded in this site.
result : the DVD drive is no more at all detected by the BIOS, and by Windows of course.
I upgrated the IDE chipset driver (AMD 756) with a file found in the AMD site : V1.43 - no change.
Please Mr "MSI" what is the right solution in order I could use normally my DVD drive with your mother board ??????
Many thanks for a right answer.
    James

I tried that and the both disk's pass the verification, the problem is the installer detecting my hard drive.
When i'm running 10.5 and try to install from the SL Disk it picks up the hard drive (but says it cannot install to this volume, use disk utility etc) - its when I restart and enter the installer via the splash menu, it fails to pick up my hard drive.
I cant see any other way of partitioning my drive to the required GUID, even when I made a seperate 20gig partition, it remains as Mac OSX Journaled on the same drive thats partition scheme is 'Apple Partition Map'.
Bootcamp will not help me either, I thought of creating a seperate partition and installing it to that, then reformatting the rest of the drive from within' SL, but Bootcamp says that it cannot modify the 'startup disk' and says it requires reformatting.
I really am stumped as to what to do next, I can't understand why the installer picks up the hard drive whilst its running, but when its in the installer it doesn't
    Help!!!!

  • MSI P67A-GD55 B3 cannot detect Solid State Drive

    Hello Everyone!
I bought and installed a MSI P67A-GD55 B3, very happy about it, all perfect, with the exception that it  cannot detect the Solid State Drive (OCZ SATA II --> Vertex 2).
The standard Hard disk (SATA II as well) works fine ...
Anyone with the same problem? Any Idea?
    Thanks!

Quote from: DonBoy on 19-April-11, 09:20:06
Did you try going to the bios and going to onboard chipset for sata  and put in AHCI mode for sat type. This has to be done for the SSD Drive to respond. Hope this helps
Not true, a working SSD will be identified by the BIOS regardless of what mode the SATA controller is set to.

  • IDE/DVD drive problem

I just set up my new Neo4-F board and I'm having problems with the DVD/CDRW drive I have installed.  When I first installed it on IDE2 as the master, Windows installed just fine and so did a bunch of driver updates.  After I powered down and turned it back on later, I found that inserting a CD into the drive would cause a BSOD.  I tried numerous things, including reinstalling Windows to get it to work.  Reinstalling Windows did get it to work again, but then after a power down it started to BSOD on me again.  So I moved the drive to the IDE1 slave position and everything seems to work except it doesn't recognize DVDs.  I'm fairly sure the drive is not damaged since it worked on the last machine it was installed in.
I also tried using a different CDRW drive to see what would happen.  First I put that in IDE2/Master position, and it worked, but Windows took a long time to load.  So I'm convinced since drives do work on that spot and that the original DVD/CDRW drive was able to work until a power cycle, that there's something wrong with the IDE2 spot and/or my motherboard in general.  I'm concerned that if I buy a new drive that it also won't work.  Everything is recognized correctly in Windows and in the BIOS, and there are no conflicts reported in Windows.  Any ideas as to why my DVD drive doesn't seem to want to work?
    Thanks.

I wanted to check the firmware version but I'm not sure how to go about that.  I'm pretty sure it's the most recent as the latest firmware update on Samsung's website is from 2003.  Although it could be longer than I want to admit/can remember since I got this drive.  The reason I think the IDE2 port might be problematic is that the CDRW drive I put in there worked without crashing, but had the not so nice habit of adding an extra 30+ seconds to the Windows load time.  And I know the drive works, and it's being detected just fine in the BIOS and in Windows.  It also reads CDs fine (but seems to be picky about what CDR/Ws it reads).
I should just pick up a DVDRW drive from a local store and see if that works in there.  If not I can always return it.  Unless anyone else has any ideas?  I should also ask while I'm at it, is it normal to have more than one Primary IDE, Secondary IDE channel and Standard Duel Channel PCI IDE controller listed in device manager under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers?  I have three of each.  Shouldn't there only be one of each?
My only other option I think would be to get a SATA drive and bypass the IDE altogether.  But that's a more expensive option I'd like to avoid if at all possible.
    Thanks again.

  • Sony IDE DVD Drive not being recognized

    Motherboard : P7n-SLI-FI
                        MS-7380
I recently upgraded my computer a bit with this new motherboard, ram, video cards, power supply. I used my older dvd drive that was working in my last computer. It is currently connected via IDE ribbon, but it does not show up in my computer or when I put in a CD does not auto run.
The unit does have power to it ( The eject button works, light on front blinks a little )
In BIOS I tried changing the IDE primary from AUTO to DVD/CD Drive and it still did not work.
Any suggestions ? Buy a new dvd drive that is SATA ?
    Thanks

Also check the jumpers on the IDE optical drive so as they are set in Master mode as its the only IDE device in the system, assuming that you have a SATA hard drive, or if your hard drive is also an IDE one then you have to set the jumper to run as a Slave mode.

You can either run this file , go online to Microsoft's site for a fix, or manually fix it by following the instructions below:
    Manually delete the registry entries
Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Note Before you use this method, uninstall all CD or DVD writing or recording programs. Deleting the corrupted registry entries might cause problems with any other CD or DVD writing or recording programs that are installed on your computer. Uninstalling these programs before you start will help you avoid any problems that removing the registry entries might cause. You can reinstall these programs after the problem is resolved.
This method provides step-by-step instructions for how to use Registry Editor to delete the following corrupted Registry entries:
    UpperFilters
    LowerFilters
Step 1: Start Registry EditorStart Registry Editor
Start Registry Editor...type "regedit" into the run box on the start menu.
Step 2: Delete the UpperFilters registry entry
In Registry Editor, expand My Computer, and then expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Expand SYSTEM, and then expand CurrentControlSet.
Expand Control, and then expand Class.
    Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
In the details pane of Registry Editor, on the right side, click UpperFilters.
Note You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only.
If you see the UpperFilters registry entry in the details pane of Registry Editor, go to step 6.
If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters registry entry. To do this, go to "Step 3: Delete the LowerFilters registry entry."
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
Click Yes when you receive the following message:Are you sure you want to delete this value?
Step 3: Delete the LowerFilters registry entry
In the details pane of Registry Editor, on the right side, click LowerFilters.
Note You might see a LowerFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click LowerFilters only.
If you do not see the LowerFilters registry entry, unfortunately this content is unable to help you any more. Go to the "Next Steps" section for information about how you can find more solutions or more help on the Microsoft Web site.
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
Click Yes when you receive the following message:Are you sure you want to delete this value? The LowerFilters registry entry is removed.
    Exit Registry Editor.
    Step 4: Restart your computer
Restart your computer. After you have done this, try to access the CD or DVD drive. If you can access the CD or DVD drive, and if you do not receive an error message, the problem is resolved. You can reinstall your CD or DVD writing or recording software.

I too have a Lacie external DVD and had similar problems. As Malcolm Rayfield suggested, VLC gives a partial solution, but you have to amend CD&DVD preferences to select VLC from 'other application'.
I can play Video DVDs but it is quite unstable and keeps giving out error boxes that it has quit (-do I want to send a bug report?). I was reading this discussion as I hoped to find a better solution than VLC!
    Anyone got any other recommendations?
I may have to upgrade to a Mac with superdrive to overcome these problems!

  • Annoying IDE DVD Drive problem...

    Hi
I just put together a new gaming system yesterday. However I've been having an annoying problem so far with my IDE LG DVD writer not being able to read CDs/DVDs properly.
I try to install different games/programs and after a lil while I'll get an error saying"FileError: retry?" I have tried using the setup files with autorun disabled.
    My specs are-
    MSI K8n NEO4 Mobo
    1 Gig Corsair Ram
    300 Gig SATA MAxtor HD
    256mb XFX GF 7800GT
    A64 3500+
So here is what I've tried so far.
Opened up the case drive set to master, plugged into master IDE cable, verified this in the BIOS.
Windows installed fine on the same dvd writer drive with no errors at all. It seems only after installing the Nforce IDE drivers that this occurred. I tried removing just the Nforce IDE drivers using add/remove programs but the problem still persists. I am sure this dvd writer works as it works in other computers and successfully installed windows onto the machine, I then tried reinstalling windows a second time just to make sure...same problem. When the Nforce driver was installed I checked and it said ultradma 33. I put it in PIO and the same problem continued.
I know for a fact my cds are good as they are all originals and work in other machines with no scratches.
After removing the Nforce IDE drivers the Windows IDE drivers installed and I rebooted, same problem.
I am really stumped here all I have in the PC are 1 SATA Hard Drive and 1 IDE DVD writer connected to their respective master cables and proper jumper settings...everything looks good in the BIOS.
One other thing I also have an external USB 2.0 Dvd Writer, I use this on another machine. I tried it as well in the machine and I get the same problem. I know it isn't the USB connection since I have other devices on the USB that work fine.
    Any ideas? :S

Your problem is in the nvidia drivers ... you should not uninstall the drivers via add/remove programs but instead go to system >> hardware >> IDE >> properties >> update driver >> choose a driver >> ms or "native", then reboot (in English slightly other wordings might be used).

  • Coldfusion Cannot Detect Network Mapping Drive

I am using CFdirectory tag and want to use mapped drive in
the directory attribute. and ColdFusion is unable to detect the
    mapped drive.
Coldfusion is running as a System service.
My question is how can i create a mapped drive , so that
    Coldfusion can detect it.
    Thank you

Starting from Win2003 (or it happened earlier?), drives are
mapped per user (info kept in user profiles). Therefore, if you
mapped a network path to a logical drive, as, let's say,
Administrator, the service running under another account cannot see
    it. Options:
    1. Run service under specific account.
    2. Use UNC convention: \\server\share\path

  • Having problems with BIOS detecting CD/DVD drive

So heres the deal.  I have a Samsund DVD/CD-rw drive and my motherboard is a MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R K8T800.  I built a complete new system.   I got everything up and running then yesterday all of a sudden my CD drive isn't being recognized.  So I check BIOS and its not being detected there either.  I checked everything, replaced cable and stuff.  Finally I was able to get it to work but I had to clear CMOS.  After clear it detected it again and everything was fine and dandy til today.  Same thing happened.  Had to clear CMOS to get to detect again.
I thought maybe my drive was bad but I don't see how clearing CMOS would fix that.  And the ONLY way I was able to get it to detect again was clearing CMOS.... sigh.  And I really don't like doing that.

    Hi
Have you tried uninstalling the drive in device manager, then letting it re install, also DVD drives often need additional drivers, which can be got from makers site.
    Cheers
