Cannot Disable Correct Spelling Automatically

I cannot disable the Correct Spelling Automatically feature.  Rather, I can, but once I close and reopen the application it will be reenabled.  I first noticed the issue when I upgraded from Trillian 1.2.20 to 1.2.40, but I just tested this in TextEdit and the issue exists there as well.

There are two settings for it.
One is in Edit > Spelling and Grammar. The other in TextEdit > Preferences > Options.
If you turn off the former and quit, it will be re-enabled when you open TextEdit again.
If you turn off the latter and quit, both should be disabled when you open TextEdit again.
Is this the behaviour you see?

  • Disable "correct spelling automatically" for specific applications?

Is there a way to disable the "correct spelling automatically" on an application by abblication basis? I would like to use it in most apps, but want it disabled when I am doing web dev using programs like Coda. Any ideas?

Thanks for the suggestion. I don't see anything in there about Apple's new built-in auto-correct feature. It looks like it deals mostly with Coda's own spell checker where it underlined words in red that it thinks are mis-spelled.
I did find that Coda released a software update to fix some Lion issues. I'm not sure if this update addressed the auto-correct issue, but in the few minutes I've using Coda since the software update I have not experienced the problem.

  • Reminder App always change back to: «Correct spelling automatically»

    Hi all
I'm from Switzerland and my english is not that good. Please have patience.
I use Yosemite with an iMac late 2013.
I hate the «correct spelling automatically» in all apps, so I always remove the hook on this option. Now it doesn't work with the reminder app, always when I quit the app, the hook is back again.
What should I do? It only doesn't work with the reminder app, the textedit app works and all other apps.

However, my TV allows me to turn off overscanning - but only if the input is 1080. So, I'm able to see every pixel of the frame if I set my Apple TV to 1080. So even though it's 720 resolution carried by a 1080 signal, this prevents part of the frame from getting cut off due to overscanning.
that's an unfortunate limitation on your TV.
mine allows overscanning to be disabled on all resolutions.
Not really - the picture is fantastic, and all my sources do 1080. It's a Panasonic P42G15. Uverse - 1080i, Apple TV - 1080p. Oh, I guess the Wii only does 480p.
All this stuff has become so complicated! It reminds of me of messing with IRQs!! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IRQ_conflict)
I have an array of remotes and everything has quirks about it. I swear, I'm the only person who can operate my setup.
To be honest, I don't know if my TV can turn off overscanning for less than 1080. I don't think so but one never really knows.
I can't get my Uverse DVR to output surround sound in a way my receiver (Yamaha YSP 1000) understands (just silence). Then again, I'm not even sure the TV is passing it through properly!
    <scream> I'm going outside.

  • Deactivate "Correct Spelling Automatically" system wide and permanently?

    Hi,
as the title says: is there a way to deactivate "Correct Spelling Automatically" system wide and permanently?
I really really don't like it!
    Thank you,
    Cédric

Thank you so much! It was really driving me crazy since I often switch between different languages and have some text in multiple languages which always caused a total mess and the correct spelling automatically thing would just correct everything wrong.
    Thank you!

  • TextEdit always checks "Correct Spelling Automatically"

Every time I use TextEdit, the option under Edit>Spelling & Grammar called "Correct Spelling Automatically" is checked. I always uncheck it because I don't want auto-corrections. But every time I quit and relaunch TextEdit, the option is checked once again. I haven't experienced this problem on any other application that I'm aware of. Is there any way to stop it from resetting my options all the time?
    Thanks,
    Will

Thank you for the help. The "Use Symbol and Substitution" box wasn't exactly what I was looking for, but your help did lead me to the "Correct Spelling Automatically" checkbox, which was in the same panel.
    Thanks again.

  • Cannot disable IM Spelling autofixes for just Skyp...

That implementation to disable spell-checking for Skype is terrible. Making that change is not Skype specific and will affect other application too. I want to disable this for just / only Skype as I often IM to people in a different language there. Please fix this.

    Hi unicorn,
I think I know what is the issue here. Whenever I setup the MS Exchange on my phone, there is a need to use PIN (6 characters) as a security. Swipe is no longer an option.
This is the same for all Android phones as this is a security feature setup by your company's Exchange server and in order for your mails to go into your phone there is a need to setup PIN (6 characters min or text).
    Let me know =)

  • Mail doesn't correct spelling

    I'm running the latest Mavericks.
When I compose an email, misspelled words do not automatically correct (as they do in TextEdit and other apps).
I have gone into Mail Preferences:Composing and chosen "Check spelling as I type".  It doesn't.
I've also gone into Mail's Edit menu:Spelling & Grammar:Check Spelling and and select "As I type". It will underline in red a misspelled word, but it won't correct it.
How do I get Auto-Correct to work in Mail?

Yes, I have those selections checked in Mail>Prefereces>Composing.
It seems to have nothing to do with Mail>Edit>Spelling and Grammer. The Automatically Correct Spelling is always greyed.
I've been putting up with this flaw in Mail for a few years, but my irritation with it hit some kind of a limit and I am now trying to find, if not a solution to the problem, at least a reason for it.
All I can tell you, again, is that the Mail>Spelling and Grammer>CORRECT SPELLING AUTOMATICALLY is greyed. (sorry about the capitals but I am still searching out how to add emphasis to what I write.)
It seems strange that I am the only Mac user to have this problem, but my search of Discussions found no one else who else who either experience it or cared to complain about it.
Thanks for being intested in my small problem. I am eager to see if you have found the source - not to mention the cure, for it.

  • Mail won't correct spelling

This question may have been posted before but I can find no trace of it. In Mail>Edit>Spelling and Grammer the Correct Spelling Automatically is greyed. The wretched app carefully points out spelling errors but will not correct them.

  • Exception Typo: ORA-02297: cannot disable constraint (string.string)

ORA-02297: cannot disable constraint (string.string) - dependencies exist
Cause: an alter table disable constraint failed becuase the table has foriegn keys
that are dpendent on this constraint.
Action: Either disable the foreign key constraints or use disable cascade
Note the typo of the word BECAUSE from Version 11R2 back to at least 10R2.
    Thanks.

Actually, please also correct the words "foriegn" and "dpendent" too!

  • Cannot disable trackpad zooming??

Am I correct in understanding I cannot disable trackpad zooming on my MacBook Pro? It's getting very annoying scrolling webpages and instead having the text size grow or shrink. Why is this not a feature the user has control over?
After all the issues I've been having over the last 3 weeks with my 3G iPhone, I shoulda thought a little longer about getting an Apple laptop.

    Dear Apple,
PLEASE fix this. We aren't all using iPhoto all day long.
I've never seen something even CLOSE to as irritating as having things constantly getting expanded or contracted in size.
Better yet. Just bring the button back. It really isn't all that wonderful to have no button. There is no benefit from it (other than aesthetics) and it's created this new "problem" that never existed before.
Somebody get the Espresso away from Johnny Ive. I think the new trackpad was done just for the sake of change...no real benefit, just a "fun" new problem.

  • E63 keeps asking lock code - cannot disable

    Hi,
After installing, using and uninstalling the mail exchange application my e63 keeps asking the lock code. The mail application somehow demanded to use the lock code. Now I have checked the settings many times and I cannot disable it - I cannot disable or set the autolock period above 10 mins -> "unable to unlock phone".
Even restored factory settings but no go. Entering lock code every time I need my phone is annoying.
    Any solutions?
    BR,
    +timo
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Finally, I simple delete my Exchange mail box (also did a refresh of the services but don't know if it was mandatory). And my Lock Code parameters switchs itself automatically to my settings (No lock code) .
So, the Encrypt-Decrypt solution was not necessary for me. Too bad for Microsoft : I will never use Exchange util they fix this MAJOR bug because it's too annoying for me to have a lock on my phone every hour...

  • Does Mail auto correct spelling errors and typos?

I figured out how to get Mail to check my spelling & highlight errors as I go. But is there a way to get it to fix it my typos?
I have been using Entourage for a long time and finally decided to make the switch to Mail. One feature that Entourage had is that is fixes my typos as I type (such as capitalizing "I"). I've gotten pretty used to this and find it frustrating to have to go back all the time.
    Thanks.

    hi there,
thanks for bringing up this topic.
now, how can we make the apple wallahs to include the auto correct feature. i myself would like to go for years from Entourage to Mail. but being hooked to auto correct i cannot. auto correct makes my writing so much faster and easier.
could that be a real problem for them? has 'youknowwho' a patent on it?

  • How can i disable imessage from automatically starting up when i turn on macbook air?

how can i disable imessage from automatically starting up when i turn on macbook air? i dont know my imessages to pop up on my laptop when it turns on. But i dont want to disable imessage totally on my macbook.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
First of all, check that Messages is closed when you turn off your MacBook. This is so important because, by default, OS X will reopen all opened apps the next time you start your Mac.
Apart from that, when you go to  > Shut Down, or  > Restart, in the window you see to restart or turn off your MacBook, unmark "Reopen windows when logging back in". This will avoid that your Mac opens all opened apps the next time you start the MacBook, so Messages won't start automatically at startup

Trying to figure out how to disable iphoto from automatically launching on my Macbook Pro every time I plug in my iphone via USB cable. Tried looking at preferences in iphoto and itunes, but can't seem to find anything. Thanks!

It is your preference in iphoto.
