Cannot disable trackpad 'touch to click'

Last week I installed the latest updates for my OS X Leopard Macbook (ver 10.5.8). Since then, my trackpad has been hyper sensitive and is constantly highlighting things and dragging things around when I'm just using it to scroll the cursor. I've gone into Preferences-->Trackpad and disabled "Clicking" and even "Secondary Clicking," but the problem hasn't gone away at all. It wasn't a problem at all until I downloaded those updates.
I've searched the forums for an answer to this problem but couldn't find any other than 'take it to an Apple store.' Does anyone have any thoughts about what I could try? Thanks.

The touch to click doesn't work on the magic trackpad at all.
Are you saying that your prefences for the Magic trackpad shows all the 4 touch gestures? Mine only shows 3 finger gestures. Even under all the demonstrations for the additional gestures, it shows demos of 3 finger gestures only.
What am I missing?
Did you check for updates while the MT was connected?
My Trackpad Prefs show 2 options under Four Finger.
I dunno that you're missing anything, but something doesn't sound right. Try clicking on the button "Set up BT trackpad" in Trackpad prefs.
If no luck, open BT prefs and remove MT. Restart MBP and add it again.

  • Cannot disable trackpad zooming??

Am I correct in understanding I cannot disable trackpad zooming on my MacBook Pro? It's getting very annoying scrolling webpages and instead having the text size grow or shrink. Why is this not a feature the user has control over?
After all the issues I've been having over the last 3 weeks with my 3G iPhone, I shoulda thought a little longer about getting an Apple laptop.

    Dear Apple,
PLEASE fix this. We aren't all using iPhoto all day long.
I've never seen something even CLOSE to as irritating as having things constantly getting expanded or contracted in size.
Better yet. Just bring the button back. It really isn't all that wonderful to have no button. There is no benefit from it (other than aesthetics) and it's created this new "problem" that never existed before.
Somebody get the Espresso away from Johnny Ive. I think the new trackpad was done just for the sake of change...no real benefit, just a "fun" new problem.

  • Magic trackpad touch to click

I have an older MBP, 17", 2008 model, I believe. Since many gestures don't work with the installed trackpad, I bought the magic trackpad. The installation appeared to go well, but when I open preferences, I only see preferences for "Trackpad", which appears to be some odd combination of the installed device and the Magic Trackpad. I see nothing about "4 finger gestures". All the gestures I associate with 4 fingers from the box and apple's website, show up using 3 fingers, not 4.
Also, and my main reason for asking, is that the touch to click does not work on the Magic Trackpad. I can push down to click, but I love the touch to click feature, but it doesn't work on the Magic Trackpad. It shows "Tap to Click" selected, and that option works on the installed trackpad, but it doesn't work with the Magic Trackpad.
I'm a little miffed with it all. I bought Lion because it had all the gestures. Only to find out most of them don't work on my system. It wasn't clear that was the case when I upgraded. So this time, I specificly looked hard to see if any features would be limited on older versions of MBP's and I could find nothing, so I bought it, installed it, and now can't get some of the gestures to work or even display what's available for "4 finger gestures".
Any ideas on this? Do some of the features not work with it? Or is something setup wrong and I need to change it?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • MB467 Trackpad not registering clicks via press but touch only

Recently I discover that my trackpad is not working as it normally does.
The buttonless trackpad is now registering clicks badly. For 10 times I press on the glass, it register around 6. Touching to click is just fine.
This is embarrassing, when I try to drag, it stop halfway or doesn't register at all!
    Anybody?

The trackpad physically moves, so it could be a faulty connection inside the machine. Certainly sounds like it. It's unlikely to be a software issue.
Your best step is to contact Apple to have the machine serviced, or take it into an Apple Store if you can.

  • GDM touch to click

I just wanted to post this here in case it helps someone. Gnome Display Manager by default disables touch-to-click on laptop touch pads, even if you have it configured in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf. It's easy to enable it in Gnome shell (and in fact it's enabled by default), but this doesn't affect GDM.
An old Debian thread has suggestions for creating a .desktop file in /usr/share/gdm/autostart/LoginWindow/ with options similar to the ones in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf : http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?p=347944
I tried to make a .desktop file with the options from 50-synaptics.conf, but it didn't work for me. What did work for me was to disable the Wayland backend (used by default) in GDM following these instructions: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GD … rg_backend
I guess it makes sense that Wayland doesn't use the Xorg config files... after disabling Wayland I could click by touch-tapping the touch pad during the GDM login screen.
I don't know how to make it work with Wayland, but at least this is a quick and easy fix.

Thanks for the advice, but I don't think you got the gist of my question.
I find with the default settings i am unable to click. I can change the settings in system preferances, but this only applies when you are logged in.
I want to be able to use the trackpad when not logged in, when it uses the default settings, for example in the recovery screen or login screen.
I've tried, but I have found no combination of presure or duration that works for me.
Since the trackpad works when I tweak the settings and that there are no moving parts, I assume it is user error and not a faulty trackpad.
    regards

  • How do you disable the touch screen (Broken and handicapping normal mouse use)

Hi, I have an ideacentre B540. My two year old daughter did something to my computer when I wasn't in the room and ended up busting it right on the top left corner. There is only one hairline crack that was visable in the upper left corner. I've found a replacement LCD screen, but cannot afford it right now, so... Meanwhile, I would like to just disable the touch portion of my computer, because often, it will think it is active (probably damaged the sensor in the fall :-P and take the power away from my  mouse, open random windows, and generally... Make an otherwise normal PC unuseable. Is there ANYTHING that I can do to disable the touch pad? Even a list of the touch specific processes that I can immediately delete upon startup would be great, because it seems to give me a few minutes before it decides to start acting up. Thanks!

    hi SharaLynn,
Sorry to hear about your trouble.
Can you try these methods to disable the touchscreen:
    For Windows 7:
    1. Click on Start > type Pen and Touch and run the app
    2. On the Pen and Touch window,  click on the Touch Tab and uncheck Use your finger as an input Device and hit apply the settings (Source: Disable touchscreen on Windows 7)
    For Windows 8:
    Check this website for screenies
    Let me know your findings.
    Cheers

    Hi Rhondavas77,
    To enable/disable Just-In-Time debugging
On the Tools menu, click Options.
In the Options dialog box, select the Debugging folder.
In the Debugging folder, select the Just-In-Time page.
In the Enable Just-In-Time debugging of these types of code box, select or clear the relevant program types:
    Managed, Native, or Script.
To disable Just-In-Time debugging, once it has been enabled, you must be running with Administrator privileges. Enabling Just-In-Time debugging sets a registry key, and Administrator privileges are required to change that key.
    Click OK.

Should we press to click on something in macbook pro ? Mine is not touch for clicking !! I mean i must push the trackpad to click but for other functions it is touch and it doesnt need to be pushed ! Is it broken ?

Not necessarily. Do you have Tap to Click turned on?

  • Disable Synaptics Tap to click. How to???

I want to disable the "tap to click" option on my touch pad. Of all the useless options under "Tapping" in the control panel, disabling the tap to click is not there. (6715B running Vista Ultimate).
I can set up little areas to do all sorts of things of no interest whatsoever, but the Tap to click 'feature' seems to be hard wired to ON.
A web search shows that it used to be there. (screen shot of the check box I want but don't have)
Synaptics just say contact your supplier. HP don't even try. (Your product is out of warranty we're not interested)
As far as I can tell hundreds of people have the same problem, but there is no solution.
Does anyone know where I can get an OLDER driver maybe. Vista tells me that I already have the latest one.
Are HP and synaptics deliberately trying to alienate their customers. or do they genuinely feel that the intensely irritating tap to click is so important that it shall not be turned off.

Couldn't agree more. Why the heck do they put a Synaptic's touchpad in the device if you can't get a current driver for it? HP customer support website, and synaptic's website are totally useless. Synaptic's just wants me to download their Scrybe software, and when I tried to do that, it tells me I must use a synaptic's driver. I've tried disabling the Alps driver in the MS config screen but it doesn't help.

For the last few weeks I have had constant problems with pages not working. I.E.: I cannot fill in writeable fields, click on buttons... or anything... nothing on the page works. • March Win Update Disabled All Touch Screens, Wifi and BT? WHY?

    I give up - everything I have done, this is a brand new Dell Inspiron - both images are shown below, one from Registry Editor - showing proof of the Mainboard's date and the BIOS. I run on a Touch Screen, Win 8.1 Pro - I had exhausted everything in the world;
even Microsoft Tech Support in Tier 3 can't figure this out - it was working fine all along, but come late February; MSFT comes with these new Windows Updates and making it worse March wipes out literally the BT (Bluetooth), turning off completely the WiFi
(although all are enabled in Services) and considering this is one expensive piece of equipment here ... C'mon now... All my Firmware and everything else is up to date and up to par and was working peachy until Intel came up with their update of the Intel
i5 Core (see below in Device Manager - you will see where Microsoft Windows and which KB is it - I am clueless now, because the info is vague and I've had to wipe out the entire HDD and reinstall it via the OEM DVD Win 8.1 and redo the whole reinstallation
all over again) and you are installing via Windows Update i7 Series and this is not an i7 Processor - there are no i7 series for i7 Core Processors - I am sorry... Intel does not have this. Then with Bluetooth; I give up - I have it all (hidden) uninstalled
and wiped out literally; superimposed for security reasons because for the life of me I have no earthly idea where to even start anymore, neither does Microsoft Tier 3 either.... they are clueless too!  Now you've disabled my Touch Screen with your March
Updates where this now is completely a DESKTOP and it is not designed for mouse usage; it is designed for swipe or touch and go ... self sufficient are the images posted below for you to see and figure this one out yourselves.... I've done everything possible!
    Yes, everything is there and functional once everything is reinstalled but once that Windows Update begins - that is where the problem begins, I have the Windows Update on MANUAL Mode so I can view the KB's but sadly, many of the KB's are very vague in information;
this is not helping me here - before I know it; I am right back to square one! Since this will only limit me to two images - so the best I can provide you is that of BIOS and Device Manager to show what mess the Windows Update is giving everyone who has touch
screens (RT - Ultrabook to Surfaces) a massive headache;  you cannot turn it on, if it were possible - I could show you also how these are enabled in Services.
PS: NOTE - the Service Tag has been Blacked Out to prevent theft - there are no information there that people can steal from in BIOS and the other from Device Manager (followed by the BIOS first) ... go and figure these out yourselves... I am throwing in
the towel; it has nothing to do with the Manufacturer - everything was working just fine; but I can't disable Windows Update because I need it! See the point - it is futile and vain!

May I know your detail Dell Inspiron model?
What I suspected is, Dell launched the newest update for your Chipset, Bluetooth, WIFI and Touchscreen driver or software. Since you perform Windows update, OS will obtain latest driver via Windows update. Maybe incompatible driver which comes from
Windows update didn't match with your PC OEM hardware, that the reason why processor information, Bluetooth, WIFI and touchscreen don't functioning normally even worse will they turn grayed out or disable.
What I suggest here you check at Dell site, maybe there is update driver for this specific Dell model. Or let me try to find it for you. You can also download manually from there and applied the update
And maybe incomplete or corrupted Windows update process and downloaded files will caused issues like this

  • Unwanted Internet Explorer (11) Addons - Cannot disable or remove

Hi folks - I have two IE add-ons that were installed without my knowledge (Apps-Hat and HDTotal1 - in case it matters) and I cannot disable or remove them (the options to do these are greyed out). Additionally, the folder and the dll files supposedly
associated with  these addons no longer exist - I assume this happened when I uninstalled the software or did a system restore to get rid of it.
I don't know if they are doing anything malicious - Malware-bytes and Avira scans do not identify any issues - but I want to disable and remove them.
Is there any way to do this?
Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

    Hi,
These two add-ons might got installed when you install free applications from the internet, such as free softwares,
videos or something else, so be careful when you download these free application.
Run this tool, check if it cna make any differnece
    Malicious Software Removal Tool
    http://www.microsoft.com/security/pc-security/malware-removal.aspx
And make sure no Apps-Hat or HDTotal1 related 3 rd party program is installed in your system, check in Control Panel\Programs and Features
Another chance to disable the add-on is via registry,
locate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Settings, find the class ID of that add-on (right click the add-on, then "More information", find the class ID), then set “Flags”=dword:00000001 to disable it.

  • Cannot disable "New Message" window from popping up

Each time I click the Messages icon in my dock, immediately the "New Message" window pops up. However, I may not necessarily want to compose a new message; most of the time, I just want to view my buddy list to see who's online. It becomes rather annoying to have to close the "New Message" window every single time. Does anyone know how to disable this? Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
It cannot be Disabled as such.
Click and Hold the DOCK icon and then choose "Show All Windows"
This then displays all the windows like when you Quit.
You can select the Messages window or Buddy list
The Message Window does not set up New Message this way.
You will notice in the DOCK menu that "New Message" is the default action.
