Cannot display login window as "List of users"

I am running Leopard Server, and I cannot seem to get my OS to display login window as "List of users".
The option is grayed out in System Preference, and if I use Workgroup Manager to set the Login preference for this computer to "List of users able to use these computers", my computer doesn't seem to respect that. Although it does respect the "Show Restart/Shut Down button" when I turn that on/off.
I tried to edit the com.apple.loginwindow.plist in /Library/Preference, no option found for display login window.
Help please, thanks.

The way to switch between the two options is:
defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow SHOWFULLNAME 1
(turn on name list)
and
defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow SHOWFULLNAME 0
(turn off name list)
and use
defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow SHOWFULLNAME
to see what the current setting is. Note that when you use the defaults command, you omit the ",plist" on the preference file name.
As always, beware of trying to bypass measures put in place to protect you, and be careful modifying preference files since you can lock yourself out or prevent your computer from booting properly.

  • Display login window as: List of Users

Just got a Mac Mini Server.
I would like to have the login window be a list of users but it is grayed out.
(This is after I unlocked the accounts)
Everything else I can manage except for the these radio buttons.

Security isn't much of an issue for me. This is just easy of use for the rest of the family to log in.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Login Options - Display login window as: preference unavailable

    Hi:
I apologise if this topic has been posted before, but I've been searching the web and these forums for awhile now and nothing similar has come up:
Running 10.5.8, I set the preference for "Display login window as:" to list of users. Everything was working as I expected, until I hooked my computer up to my school's OS X network and now all I get is the regular login/password screen. When I go back to the Login Options prefpane, "Display login window as:" is now greyed out and I can't change anything.
    Any ideas about what happened?
    Thanks

Have you tried returning to the school and connecting to the network since your settings changed? I would log into that network again and see if the box is accessible when you are logged in. (If it works, clamp the padlock on that setting.) If that doesn't help, in your shoes my next step would be finding the network administrator for the school and see if they might have a suggestion.
Caveat: I am new to Leopard and have not been in your situation. But so far nobody has given you any suggestions, and mine won't make things worse.
Good luck, and please post back with an update.

  • Unable to login @ login window with Active Directory User

I successfully bound my test machine to Active Directory and can search using dscl and id. I can also su to my active directory user account an authenticate perfectly. All search bases are correct and everything else looks fine.
When I attempt to login from the login window as an AD user, the window shakes. Clicking under Mac OS X shows that "Network Accounts Available". Looks like the CLI tool "dirt" is now gone as well, although insecure it would possibly show something here.
Anyone else having issues after binding to AD? I bound using the Directory Utility gui... I have not tried using my leopard bind script yet.
    Thanks,
    Ken

I have pretty well the same problem. The machine was already bound to AD prior to upgrade. After could not login on with my account (jball). Can log on with other accounts from the same domain (we only have one AD domain). Can also su to jball in a terminal session. Can't access network resources with jball when I try to connect to a windows server through the finder, instantly comes up with bad username or password, doesn't even think about it.
I have removed any copies of the home folder under either /Users or /Domain as I have had problems with that before. Have repaired permissions and unbind and bind the machine to AD. Have been at this all day now and no closer. Get these error messages in console:

  • Display Login Window as:

Hi Everyone, Just got my brand new Unibody Mac Mini 1TB with OSX Snow Leopard Server on it and hooked up to our 42" HD TV. (system is extremely silent (for those of you having doubts))
!! To make it easy for the rest of the family I want, like in regular OS X, to have the Login Window display as a list of users. !!
How can I do this please?
Thank you in advance for your answers
PS: I know how it's done in regular OS X versions, no need to comment if you are not used to handle OS X Server

If this is different on the server than in the standard version - and I doubt that it is, though I'm not sure - then you have posted in the wrong forum. If you want answers specific to Mac OS X Server, you need to post in one of the [Mac OS X Server forums|http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=96].

  • Login window only shows one user account

    Hi,
Anyone has an idea what's happening?
    I'm running Yosemite on MBPr 15" Mid-2012
When I power on or reboot the laptop, on the login window it only shows one user account, my account which is the Admin account.  It doesn't show the secondary normal user account I created for my wife.  However once I'm logged in and I hit log-off, then it shows the 2 user accounts available for login.
    Thanks in advance!

The lock is on the bottom left not bottom right. Sorry mixed that up.
Letting other users unlock the drive
If you want to make the Mac available to a user that doesn't currently have unlock capabilities, log in as a user that can unlock the disk. When you see your own desktop, choose "Log Out (user name)" from the Apple () menu. Also, you can unlock the disk, then switch to another user from Fast User Switch menu in the menu bar.
If you want to grant existing users the ability to unlock the drive on their own, open the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences. Select the FileVault tab and click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the window. Enter your admin privileges when prompted. Click the "Enable Users..." button to add existing users to the list of accounts that can unlock the disk.
    Hope that helps,
    Weston

  • How can I make the login window's list longer?

There are five of us in our family, but the login window only holds four names in Tiger. In Panther it held five, and now my youngest (whose name is alphabetically last) is disappointed because he has to scroll down to see his name.
But there is plenty of screen real estate for a really long list! How can I have a longer list in the login window without scrolling?
I posted this back when using Tiger, and hoped that Leopard would at least bring back the Panther days of 5 users in the list---if not a window that adjusted to the number of users. <Sigh>

Yes, I've thought about making it fair that way. But then there are no more cute pictures, and we have to type more.
I was also thinking about adding a character to the beginning of each long name. And then every once in a while changing the character that each family member has to change who is #5 on the list.
Would changing the User Name cause problems?
I thought of that but it's not a good idea. The repercussions might get messy. I don't know.
This is not the short name, just the long one. The short user name can't be changed after creating the account.
It can be changed but it's even more fraught with problems. If you right-click your user name in Accounts you have the option to change the short name - - but read the caveats carefully - and then perhaps don't do it.
To get five, I could use the card suits and also a diamond.
Next: An Applescript that randomly pre-fixes those symbols to each person's user name? Run the script each night or each time someone logs out. Hmm, System Preferences is scriptable.
Again, I would not recommend name changes, esp. on a regular basis.
If you use TimeMachine it might get confused.
Your best bet is to send Apple an enhancement request for future OSs or even this one.
I am sure that the OS can be hacked to do what you wish, but there are unintended consequences of each and every system hack - one of which is that updates expect certain things to be constant.
One solution is to buy a second computer
Even if you have 5 accounts on the login page, what if you gain a 6th?

I have set the Fonts to Ms San Serif to all items in a form, all items seems can display Thai. character correctly. For List box, it can display Thai also, but the elements in the selections cannot.
Does any expert know how to fix this ?
    Thanks!

    Hi Kinghow,
    Thanks for your reply!
The problem still can't solve after set the auto csv code select "Yes". The excel file still can't display Thai character.
Am i using a correct way to generate excel file? Do you have any suggestion to export data to excel using pl/sql?
If i removed below part, then the excel file working well.

  • Cannot display custom search result to Public user

I use the custom search portlet with auto query. When I log in to the portal, I can see the result. When I do not log into the portal, I do not see the result. The page is displayed fine, only this portlet is not displayed. Is there some setting I need to do?
    Can someone help?
    Thanks in advance,
    John

    John,
Yes I tried searching just the page group where the items are located but they were not found.
The page is public, with no security at item level.
I have now detached the template from the content page, re-applied Make Public to the page and the search works.
The access on the Template was Display Page to Public and Enable Item Level Security, with ORCLADMIN user Manage access.
I would like to use templates, as we need a consistent look and navigation, so let me know if you have any idea's where I have gone wrong, or if this is a bug.
    Thanks,
    Brenda

  • BW Download to excel - extra login window - no direct BW user possible

    Hi All,
When we download a report with a hierarchy from BW to Excel we are asked to logon again. We would like to remove this logon and download the objects directly when exporting to excel.
In note 516884 we found an option for removing the extra logon, unfortunatly for our client this is not an option as they use the SAP portal ONLY to access the reports and do not have direct access and connection to the BW server.
Do you have an idea how to solve this problem? So we do not have to logon in excel, and do not have to have a direct user to BW.
    Hope you can help!
    Thank you and kind regards,
    Hermen

    Hi Hermen,
You can achieve this by implementing Single Sign-On between SAP Portal and BW.
SAP Portals has the mechanism to provide Single Sign-On with Logon Tickets.
You can find more detailed information at the link below:

  • Login window not displaying list of users

Hello, i work in a networked office environment, where we regularly sync our networked users to mobile accounts, using homesync.
On most of our computers, the login window displays the admin account, guest account, other (for network login) and any users synced. However on some computers, it just displays the username/password dialogue. I've checked the login preferences - and "display login window as: list of users" is selected. Also this information is grayed out as though it can't be changed. Is there a rogue system preference file that's causing this to not work correctly? If so where is it, can i delete it, or modify it to fix this situation? thanks!

I tried the commands you've listed. Upon checking the com.apple.loginwindow.plist files, I noticed that the changes ARE being made to the file, but loginwindow.app is flat-out ignoring the settings. As for the stuff I tried earlier:
    Boot into Single-User Mode
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    cd /Library/Preferences
    rm com.apple.loginwindow.plist
    rm com.apple.windowserver.plist
    cd /Library/Caches
    rm -r *
    cd /System/Library
    rm Extensions.kextcache
    cd /System/Library/Caches
    rm -r *
    reboot
...and after this had no effect, I deleted the loginwindow plists listed above several times from the Finder to force loginwindow.app to regenerate them.
It seems like my problem has evolved slightly since my first post. At first, changes made in the Accounts preference pane would have no effect on the contents of /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist. Now, the changes ARE made in the file, but loginwindow.app does not heed them. Any ideas?

  • User listing unavailable on login window

    Hey!
Ever since I upgraded to Leopard (10.5.1) my login window has changed from user listing to requiring a username and a password. If I set it to "List of users" the login window still asks for a username, and weirdly the "Show the restart, sleep and shutdown buttons" will cease functioning as well, i.e. no matter if I check it or not no buttons show up.
I have tried deleting all the com.apple.loginwindow.plist files in both my home and the root library to no avail.
Is this a Leopard-specific bug or maybe a result of upgrading directly from Tiger? Any ideas as to what i could do, please?

I created a new admin user account: when I logged out now only the new admin account was selectable, my old one was accessible only when clicking "Other..." and typing in the account name. So it did kind of solve the problem, but not how I wanted it.
Looks like as is my old account is like the Administrator/root account, that does not appear on the user listing. I read somewhere that some of the plist files control which users are added to the login screen, maybe I can meddle with that?
I cannot reinstall 10.5.1, my Install DVD came with it built-in.

  • Single user displayed in login window after reboot

I've done a clean install of OSX 10.10 on my family Macbook Air.  We have two users created on this device: Parents (an admin user) and Family (a standard user).  We'll normally just use the Family account for most of our work, and only rarely log into Parents. In the Login Options, we have List of Users set as our Display Login Window preference.
Since moving to 10.10, after a reboot of the device, the Login Window only displays the Parents user - even though prior to the reboot, the previous user may have been Family.  This is the case whether I log out of Family or not, prior to shut down of the computer.
The only way I can log into Family from that point is to first log into Parents, then either: explicitly log out or select "Login Window" from the top right drop down menu.  In either case, the Login Window then appears displaying both users (in the latter case indicating that Parents is still logged in).  From there I can log into Family as normal.
Am I doing something weird here or is this a bug?

Yes I did.  Good thought.  That hadn't occurred to me.
File Vault is a nice to have, but would rather fix this problem, if there is a tradeoff.  What options do I have?
    Cheers

  • Mysterious "Other" User at Login Window????

    Hi folks,
Ive just updated my old iMac G3 to Tiger 10.4.3 (from OS9) and connected it to my Powermac G5 (10.4.3) via a network cable. The thing is for some reason when the iMac boots up the login window shows the correct user (my wife) but also shows another icon underneath called "other" I recognize the icon (it's the shilhouetted guy with the blue background, Admin?) but my wife's is the only account on the machine. If i type her details in the "other" user it logs in as her the same as if i login with her icon? What is this and how can i get rid of it?
    Thanks.

I seem to remember this "Other" as an option in Jaguar or Panther, but I can't seem to find it in Tiger. Have you enabled the root user? That's usually what this "Other" user was for — it presented the Name and Password fields instead of a list of users so you could type in "root" and the root password to log in as root. (If you don't know what root is, don't worry about it.)
To get rid of it, I would try switching some of the Login Options in the Accounts preference pane. Specifically, pick the option that says Display login window as Name and password instead of List of users. Log out, see if that sticks, log back in, switch back to List of users. Log out, see if it's fixed. That's definitely the first thing I would try.

  • Login window displayed after logging in

Since I upgraded to Yosemite I have had some problems with the login process.Hope somebody can help!
Before upgrading I had my Users & Groups preference set to 'Display login window as Name and Password' and everything worked fine. However, since upgrading, when rebooting, I would be given the list of users, even though the preference was still name and password. If I logged in the system would boot, all of my login items would be started and then the name and password login screen would be displayed and I had to login again! I have tried changing the login option to 'List of users' and now I have exactly the same problem but I see the list of users on both occasions! It's a bit of a pain.
It's not the end of the world as I leave the machine logged in most of the time but I would like to know what the problem is. I have tried resetting the SMC and NVRAM but it hasn't helped. The machine is a 2011 MacBook Pro and both a firmware password and filevault are enabled. I have another issue where my display keeps going to sleep, which is the subject of another thread on the forums, and I suppose this may be related as the preference in that case is to never let the display sleep.
Any ideas would be gratefully received.
    Thanks,
