Cannot do a complete backup

I have Elements 10 on Windows 7.  When I try to do a complete backup to an external hard drive, I see "calculating total media size" and the execution bar stops at 96% and nothing else happens.  I have waited for an hour, nothing.  My CPU usage meter shows no activity.  It is like it is hung up.  I cannot cancel, I have to click the x button.  At some point in the past this wroked since I had three complete backup files on my external drive (which I deleted before doing this).
What's wrong?

That's an interesting point, and I freely admit I don't know if the problems seen here with catalogs are due to:
The SQLite database engine itself.
The design of the Organizer's database structure.
The program code used by Organizer to manipulate its data.

In my experience, the usual advice to run 'repair' and 'repair anyway', inherited from the days of Access, are only 'placebos' and I have never been of any use. (Always in my own experience).
I don't know what the Organizer's "repair" does, so I share your scepticism about that function -- it's never helped with issues we've seen here.  The "optimize" function, however, is valuable and has always been valuable, even when using Access.  The reason is that when a database is told to "delete" a record, for performance reasons the record is simply marked as "no longer available".  The physical space occupied by that record's ones and zeros is still there on disk.  With time, if a lot of records are deleted there are accumulated a lot of "dead" areas that affect performance.  "Optimizing" rewrites the physical ones and zeros, physically removing the "deleted" records and moves the remaining ones and zeros on disk to create contiguous used areas on disk.  (This is why "optimizing" is also called "compacting".)  With "personal" databases like Access and SQLite, that optimization must be initiated manually, but "enterprise class" databases like MS SQL Server (and MS SQL Server Express) and Oracle and IBM's DB2 are server-based database engines and can perform that database maintenance automatically.
MichelBParis wrote:
I am a regular user of John R Ellis's psedbtool, and I consider that integrating some of his diagnosis and repair tools instead of fancy automatic processes would be a welcomed progress.
That's pretty much the same point I'm making.  There are huge advantages to having a database engine running as it's own separate process.  One of those advantages is that the database engine can constantly run its own optimization and integrity-checking processes against the databases that are connected to it.
Here's why I'm so enthused about "enterprise-class" databases (and MS SQL Server Express in particular):
The way I see it, any free open-source database (like SQLite) by definition, does not make a profit for its developers.  The quality of that database is determined by the skill of the developers, their dedication, and how much time they can afford to spend on it.  On the other hand, major databases like MS SQL Server, Oracle and DB2 generate hundreds of millions of dollars in profits for their respective companies.  Therefore, they will have the most knowlegeable and skilled developers available in the world working full-time on those databases.  Those databases are used for extremely critical applications like credit card processing on a global scale, so those databases will incorporate the most advanced and reliable features known to man.
If I can have a choice of databases for my personal use, it would be foolish not to choose the most advanced and reliable one.  Each of those companies offeres an entry-level database, and in the case of MS SQL Server, MS is aggressively promoting the free "Express" version as an "entry-level" database in order to impress users with its features in the hope that they will later spend the money on its flagship database.  That's why the free "Express" version uses the same database engine as the "big" SQL Server.
So, I enjoy using MSSSE for my personal projects, and I sleep well at night knowing I've got something at the top of its class.  For our image cataloging purposes, there is the example of this program, whose "Pro" version allows the use of other database engines:

I'm surprised that feature has not been implemented by Adobe, especially for Lightroom.

I am trying to use TimeMachine to setup a backup from a mid-2011 iMac running OSX 10.9.3 to a 4TB WD MyBook Live Duo drive on a network. I have 3 other MacBooks setup to use this shared drive using Time Machine as well as a PC using WD backup software.

  • Time machine cannot complete backups - please help

I hope somebody can help me - my Time Machine has been unable to complete backups for about six weeks or so.
Having read some useful information on the support forums yesterday, I verified both my internal HD and my external disk. The external disk appears fine, yesterday my internal disc needed some 'minor repairs'. I booted from the Leopard disk, but could not find where to repair disk so simply verified disk again and it was apparently fine.
I have verified both disks today and they are again fine. However when I try to back up I get this message:

Time Machine quit backing up files. Bought a new WD external drive. Worked for awhile, then quit backing up. Tried restarting computer, remounting drive. Message: Time Machine Error. Unable to complete backup. An error occurred when copying files. Suggestions?

Thanks so very much for your help!! I'm boggled by it and now just about ready to dump the whole idea of Time Machine and backup using a cloning program. Maybe TM is only guaranteed to work well with Time Capsule these days?
Today there again was no backup. I did as you suggested, looked into Console. It showed many lines of "(Error) DiskStore: No block in wakeup" and also repeatedly "(Warning) DiskStore: Ignored bogus fetch...".
So I created a marker and attempted to initiate a backup, keeping Console open and refreshed. Here's what I got:

I'm thinking it's the standalone Buffalo backup drive not waking up, and so everything comes to a screeching halt. Do you also think I should abandon TM and just do manual backups every day using a clone program?

  • Time machine cannot complete backup  sparse bundle already in use

I'm getting an error message: time machine unable to complete backup, sparse bundle already in use?
Please advise, I need to find the "yellow brick road", guess it wouldn't be cool for a guy to click red slipper heels together?

What constructive purpose do these smart mouth answere provide? I have been through the "more like this" discussions and the mostly have answers referring you to  "more like this". The troubleshooting links refer to old and outdated systems. After all these years, doesn't anyone have an intellrgent suggestion? Is there any way to make the Time Machine backups dependible? It's not worth the trouble to have to reconnect by USB, reboot the time machine, etc. every couple of weeks.

  • Cannot turn on icloud backup after downgrade to iOS 7.1.2

I own an iPhone 4S which I upgraded to iOS 8 on 21st September. The iphone and most of applications (even phone) crashed all the time so I decide to downgrade to 7.1.2 after following instructions found in these communities. I did it just yesterday.
Now I cannot turn on iCloud Backup to my iPhone. The iCloud drive of course disappeared from Settings > iCloud, however it's still visible when I access the iCould in web. Moreover in iCloud web interface my iPhone appears as running iOS 8 and X Yosemite which is not true. My iPhone has 7.1.2 iOS.
I tried to erase my iPhone and restore it from a backup I made yesterday but I have the same issue: iCloud could not be enabled. It was enabled finally after hard reset but when I select "Backup now" the app crashes and throw me in the Home Screen. I see a message: this iPhone has never been backed up on iCloud and the last backup could not be completed.
Please help!!!!!! I want to be able to have iCloud Backup (most important settings and contacts, sms etc.) as I did usually before upgrading to iOS 8 and downgraded to 7.1.2.

    Hello,
Been experiencing the same problem, finally fix it by deleting your old iCloud backup from iOS 8.
Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Manage Storage > Click on your device name > Scroll down to bottom > Delete this backup.
Then try to turn on the iCloud Backup setting toggle again.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to create a complete backup of a website

I am the owner of a website and I wish to make some minor changes myself, however I wish to create a complete backup first, just in case I stuff it up?  In the Admin Console, I cannot find any option to make a backup and to restore from a backup?

    A.  The best way is to clone your current system to an external drive using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper.
    CCC can be found here:
    http://www.bombich.com/
    B.  You can either install Lion on the external drive and test it there, or you can install on your internal drive and Clone your external copy back to the internal drive if you don't like it.

  • "Time Machine is unable to complete backup" error message

I've tried to run Time Machine 3 times since last night and each time it gets through about 85 GB with about 150 GB remaining. Then a message comes up that says "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume." I checked the Support Troubleshooting section before the last attempt, and reformatted the disk as it suggested. (The disk is a new Western Digital 500 GB). Based on the response to a similar discussion posted recently, I went into my Console and copied the below. Obviously this is all Greek to me, so if anyone has any insight on how I can get Time Machine to work as it's intended, I'd sure appreciate it!

Well now I've got a whole new, much bigger problem. I did the renaming and then went through the indexing procedure for the 3 partitions of my main drive. So after that I did a restart. However, after the restart, there were (and are) no icons on my desktop. Nothing for my drives, files, etc. The only thing that shows is the dock at the bottom. If I open an application from the dock, it opens fine and then I've got the menu bar at the top. But the finder won't open. When this first happened, and I checked the Spotlight icon top right, it said was 'estimating index time" for both of my external hard drives (which I did not select when I was in the Privacy tab, etc.). One of those has my iPhoto library of 5,000+ photos and one is the empty back-up drive for Time Machine. Those "estimating indexing time" messages stayed for some time but have now gone away (without ever indicating that indexing was taking place), but still no change. I've restarted again and it's the same. Help!

  • Cannot restore after Windows Backup

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate.
After creating a number of backups on on an external disc I thought that I had better try to restore  from that backup.
I tried several times, I completely cleared the backup files from my external disc and after choosing the backup to
restore from I received the following massage:-
"The restore did not complete successfully
Restore encountered a problem while validating the zip file:
    \\?\Volume{127767ee-d6b7-11e1-a888-0026b9cf5b2e}\SPY-PC\Backup Set
    2012-07-24 130658\Backup Files 2012-07-24 130658\Backup Files 1.zip
The following information might help you resolve the problem:
The backup file could not be found. Make sure the drive that the backup is
saved on is attached or try to restore from a different backup. (0x8100001A)"
I can find no answer to this problem.
    HELP
    Bill

Sorry perhaps I didn't make myself clear. I
am not trying to restore the files saved on my old external drive.
-> If so, what is the relevance of you mentioning the destroyed disk?
I have made a backup to a new external disc and cannot restore from that backup. I am not trying
to restore the files saved on my old external drive.
-> If so then this new disk must have a drive letter which brings us back to the very start of this thread: Does
    the file
    X:\SPY-PC\Backup Set 2012-07-24 130658\Backup Files 2012-07-24 130658\Backup Files 1.zip
exist on your external disk? (Replace X: with the correct drive letter)

I have an older macbook pro and the hard drive is starting to go (making loud noises). i tried to back up to an external hard drive (my passport essential se) using time machine and the computer keeps shutting down. the same thing happens when just trying to save my pictures from iphoto to a flash drive. suggestions to complete backup please?

Sounds like you'll need to access that drive while it is not booted. You need to replace it anyway, so do that, then one way or another (ext enclusure, et), access it and copy files.
If you keep trying to boot it, you might kill it for good and not get your files, so just swap it out first.

    itunes version 10.
I do not wish to go to ios 7 at this time.

Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Basic troubleshooting is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.
If the issue continues, contact the carrier to troubleshoot the network connectivity issues.

  • I loaded in Lion - but my time capsule will not back up. I get an message: couldn't complete backup due to a network prolem. Also it says "make sure your computer and back up disk are on the same network, and that the backup disk is turned on.

I installed Lion on my Mac Pro laptop. Regarding Time Capsul - I get a messaage as follows: couldn't complete backup due to a network problem. Make sure your computer and back up disk are on the same network and that the  backup disk is turned on. Then try again to back up. I have time capsul turned on. bill

I have exactly same problem with my MBP and MBA, after upgrading to Lion. I've tried to fix this issue while cheking key chain issues and network setup, even formating hdd and time capsule firmware upgrade (ver. 7.6.1.). Nothing can help. It is very annoying.

  • Time capsule won't back up - Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder. Any ideas?

I have tried all the resets, the firmware is the latest version, the green light is on.
But I get this message "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder."
    Any ideas?

Do setup again.. but make sure both your wireless and your ethernet have ipv6 turned on to local link.
Done this OK, but no idea about IPv6 - something new to me and rather Appley I think?
Unplug the WAN for the moment.. Just LAN port TC to the MBPr ethernet via thunderbolt.. (thunderbird was the kids puppet series.. Thunderbirds are go!!). Done - New real people Thunderbirds movie coming out soon I believe!!!
Reset the TC again.. sorry.. !! You're welcome ... done.
Make sure the ethernet now has an IP address.. 10.0.1.2 - Yep - done that - on ethernet anyway ...
You need to open the network preferences to find out. Yep - that's good ...
****** I then reconnect the TC WAN to the router - is this right?
And then I think I start going round in circles ... boot, reboot, restart, reboot again ...
The final result is green light on TC, but error message when trying TM is "Backup disk is not available".
Then open the airport utility and you should be able to setup the TC.
Do as little setup as possible and then run the TM backup and see how it goes.
I have managed to get Thunderbird to LAN on TC to create a folder on TC and copy a file onto it.
So I guess the drive is working - it must be the software, settings or perhaps even the operator that isn't quite so clever ...
I named network RFG, named device RFGTC.  RFG network shown as IP 192.168.0.72
Wireless router is BT Homehub 3 with IP of 192.168.0.254 - is this issuing new IP addresses when rebooting TC?
I have three wireless networks here - the BT Homehub3 wireless, the TC wireless, and also a D-link power socket ethernet thingy for an ethernet connection to the telly - DHP-W310AV which is also wireless link.  All are effectively connected to the BT Homehub - is there a conflict there?
Have several times achieved in Airport Utility schematic with internet shown as green, RFGTC shown as green, light on TC green, but no TM backup run ... "backup disc not available."
And there are no tall building around here to hurl myself off ... at least you can go to Sydney Harbour bridge - not too far away ... it was my son in Sydney that persuaded me to scrap Windows and go Apple ... it's all his fault ...

Aside from the size of my backup drive, which I will increase at some point, I'd really like to have time machine backing up all system folders, especially Applications. How to I reset this hidden exclusions?
    Thanks,
    Darcy
