Cannot drag files to mail dock icon to compose new message with attachment

Hello,
I can no longer drag images or files to the dock icon to open a compose message window with the attachment. I drag the file and nothing happens.
I first noticed using skitch. Then I tried both a jpg and word .docx from finder and neither worked. I then tried dragging to other applications like photoshop and that worked fine. So it seems to be isolated to mail.app
I tried repairing my permissions and that didn't fix the problem.
I am using the latest version of Snow Leopard, 10.6.2
Lori

Alright well the problem is back and I did some further testing.
It works when mail.app is not already open, I can drag images or any type of file to mail, mail will open and create a new message with the attachment.
IF mail is already open, the only thing I've been able to drag are links from safari, images or files no longer work.

  • Can you copy/paste files from the Finder to Mail in Lion, or drag them onto the Mail icon in the Dock to create a new message and attach the files to it?

Message title says it: Can you copy/paste files from the Finder to Mail in Lion, or drag them onto the Mail icon in the Dock to create a new message and attach the files to it?
I can't find anything in the Knowledge Base that says these two options no longer work or still do.
I do not have a system capable of running Lion, but I need to know the answer nonetheless.

Gee, I don't know: "paste attachments mail Lion"? ;-)
One further question, if I may: in Panther (which is where I've aggregated nearly 7 years of mail), if you copy more than one file in the Finder, switch to Mail, and paste the files into a new message, only the file names paste in. If you copy one file and paste it into a Mail message, you get the file, not just the name. Is that still true, or has that (IMHO) bug been fixed since 10.3.9?

  • Apple Mail locks up when composing new messages

After 10.9.2, I am unable to send mail from my Apple Mail App! I can read, but creating a new message invokes the spinning rainbow icon of death (which stays around for hours if you let it -- I've verified this).
Anybody have any ideas on how to fix or what the cause is?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Mail will not quit after sending message with attachment

    B&W G3-450
    OSX 10.2.8
    640 MB RAM
I recently switched to using an email account through AOL Instant Messenger (AIM.com). The only way to connect to their service is via IMAP. I have all the correct settings, I can send and receive email no problem.
However, when I attempt to send a message that contains an attachment (.zip, jpeg, anything) the email will send just find. The problem is when I try to quit mail it wont' respond. I can continue to send or receive after sending the message but it will not quit. Trying to log out does not work either as it reports a problem with Mail that prevents closing the session. The only thing I can do is force quit mail.
The next time I use mail it works fine and there are no problems. The only issue seems to be this hanging problem. I've never experienced this problem using POP3 accounts.
    Any suggestions?

Does anyone have a suggestion here?

  • Mail Dock Icon - Red Circle

Just upgraded to Leopard on my G5 (from 10.4.11 to 10.5.1 to 10.5.2) with Mail v 3.2
The Mail Dock Icon has a Red Dot with the # 84 in it (was 104 but I opened 20 emails & it came down to 84).
There are no unopened messages in any of my Mailboxes (that I can find).
Any idea where the 'Hidden' emails are located?
(This icon indicator worked fine before my upgrade)
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Same problem, John -- though my number is 51. Do hope someone out there can be of help!

  • Mail dock icon does not create new message when a file is dragged onto it

After installing Snow Leopard, dragging a file to the the Mail icon in the dock no longer creates a new message with the file attached. Mail is brought forward as the active application, just no new message window.
This was the behavior in earlier versions of mail.
Is there a preference, or any other change, that can be changed to allow drag-and-drop of a file to create a new message with an attachment?
    --James

There are some issues with drag and drop. I was having the same issue with Mail with SL, but I didn't check after 10.6.1. However, I just installed a new hard drive, and migrated. Mail works for me, now.
It didn't work with my 10.6 which had been upgraded with multiple builds in the beta. I assumed it was related to the other drag and drop issues. Now that I check it again, I don't think so.

  • I cannot drag file over Dock and place into one of more opened windows - i.e. Mail

I cannot drag file over Dock, i.e. MAIL, wait a second, choose one of 2 windows - MAIL APP or NEW MAIL and place this file into opened New Mail. Normally I will wait until appear 2 windows with Mail app and New mail and choose NewMail and place the file into the new mail. This does not work for now and I have no idea why... Now it will Create only NewMail with this file attachment.
    I tried:
    1. Other Existing USER account
    2. Restart with SHIFT - SafeMode
    3. Reset PRAM
    4. Delete com.apple.dock.plist and restart with default dock.list
    5. It does not work on touchpad on my MacbookAir and with external mouse Logitech MX Revolution too
    6. I have no plugins in MAIL APP

Create an album and drag them into the album. Then you can easily select all of them in the album and email.

  • Dragging files from Mail and Dock to finder stopped

Since installing mavericks I have the problem that I cannot drop files from mail or the dock (downloads) to finder or the desktop. I can drag them and move them around but cannot release them to finder. Drag and drop from finder to finder works fine. When I reboot it works for a while and then stops again. This is very annoying...

    Thank you for replying BDAqua.
If I make the right or left monitor my main monitor the the files drag to the approprate place. When I switch it back to the center montior being the main monitor then the issue comes up again.
Could there be an issue with which monitor is connected to which port?
    It's just weird.
    What else can I try?
    Shawn.

  • Mail dock icon problem

The Mail dock icon always shows there are 7 unread messages in my inbox, when there are none. When there are some, their number is added to 7. This developed after I migrated the contents of my drive to my new computer.
How can I get rid of the omnipresent number?

I dont know how to solve this, but im guessing that the 7 could be from your old computer's mail application and theres probably a hidden file somewhere in the system that is keeping it there. :P

Cannot use any menus or dock icons. Tried turning off computer but message appeared asking 'am I sure'. If I press shut down button it doesn't respond. Any ideas? I was dropping multiple  clips into my movie/project when it happened.  It has been frozen for over an hour now. I can't hear the driving doing any work.

Thanks a lot. I had previously held the power button down and up popped the 'are you sure' message whhich provided a shut down button to press but it didn't work. Thanks for you help. I'll have a look in iMovie now to see if I've got any corrupted files. Thanks a lot

  • Mail dock icon has vanished

Hi, I have a strange problem with my Mail dock icon. It is completely transparent. It is still there, but I can't see it, I see an empty space, with only the 'Mail' text on top of it. I still can click it to open up mail. I already tried to remove it and add a new alias - and rebooted the computer. The Mail icon in the dock has vanished...

Have you tried trashing the mail.plist file from your Home Preferences folder?
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run _*Repair Disk*_ from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select *Disk Utility.*
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click *First Aid.*
    Click _*Repair Disk.*_
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop

I want while replying incoming mails to drag files to mails but not in body of mail , more over the available type of attachments is only photo or video so how I can attach another type

There is no dragging of anything in iOS.
Attach as many files or emails as you'd like until it reaches the max capacity of attachements for the email provider.

  • Apple Remote Desktop ARD 3.7 cannot drag files from local to remote.

Apple Remote Desktop ARD 3.7 cannot drag files from local to remote. I've been able to drag n drop folders and files from my local to the remotes for years until the update to 3.7. Anyone else experiencing this issue? I've tried changing preferences. No luck. Maybe I'm missing a setting somewhere.
I'm on 10.8.5. Remote is same with 3.7 client. This happens with multiple remotes.

Let me guess.  The Get and Send clibboard contents buttons are greyed out too?
It is only affecting me on clients already upgraded to 3.7.    None of the clients on older versions are affected.
ARD is also crashing a lot.
Most of the time I go to a screen share to a client it takes way too long, so I clock Stop,  then try to connect again and works straight away.
Hopefully a patch will be released soon.

  • Disabling certain mail accounts from "new message count" in Mail dock icon

    Hi,
I'd like to disable two of my mail accounts from affecting the new message count that appears over mail's dock icon. How might I do this?
    Thanks in advace

the only option you have is to choose between all mailboxes and inbox, in mail>preferences>general
other than that, you may want to look at plugins such as dockstar to do more customization of the notification features: http://www.ecamm.com/mac/dockstar/
    hope this helps

  • RSS count on Mail dock icon

Pretty simple really, I want the RSS count to appear on my mail dock icon.
here is the catch though. I know you can achieve this by selecting the "Show in Inbox" option for each feed, but then I end up with a huge list of RSS feeds in my Inbox section in the sidebar. This is very Annoying. It would be fine If I could put all these RSS feeds in a folder within the inbox section but mail wont let me do this. So how can i see the unread RSS count on the dock icon without having a list of about 50 RSS feeds in the Inbox section of my mail sidebar?????

Mail Badger lets you set up a separate dock badge for RSS feeds.
Works great. Now if Mail would just update my RSS feeds like it's supposed to.....
