Cannot Edit Advanced Action (Captivate 5)

One of my projects has a conditional advanced action that Captivate will not let me edit. I can select its name in the "Existing Actions" drop-down list in the "Advanced Actions" window, but then neither the "Action Name" field nor the other fields in the window get populated with the values for that action.
I tried restarting Captivate in case that resolved the problem, but it did not.
Can anyone suggest a solution?

Hello,
About your point 1: do not even know what you are pointing at, never keep track of that kind of numbers (not an accountant) because I feel them being unimportant. I'm happy if I can help some users out with issues and do learn a lot myself by trying to solve problems.
Thanks for introducing a feature request. Of course I have done that multiple times concerning advanced actions. I also would like to have a search and replace function (for object ID's principally), to add comments, to print (not possible directly now) and to be able to construct a library with actions that can be opened like the external library of another project. Those are only a few of my long wish list.
I'm glad that my idea for re-using scripts with a template has at least one 'follower'. If you have time, would love to see your comment on that particular blog post, could be inspirational for other users. Here is the link:

  • Actions and Advanced Actions not working correctly. - Captivate 8

In our project, we have it set so that after every section the student is asked three quiz questions (they are set on the default quiz slides.) On success, the person jumps to the next question slide. On failure, the person goes to next slide which has two buttons - one that allows them to simply move forward to the next quiz question and one that allows them to go back and review. The "Go back and Review" button takes the person back to the specific content slide that contains the answer to the question they are being asked. This button is set to advanced actions "Jump to Slide ..." and "Show Button..." - The button is a 'Return to Quiz' button to allows the person to find the answer then try the question again.  I know that the buttons on the default quiz slides cannot be programmed to do a specific action, but every time we click 'Submit' it seems fine until we click 'Next' to move ahead, it then routes us back to one of the content slides (Slide 7) instead of the next slide (if wrong), or the next question slide (if right). I have looked at the Advanced Interactions Window and there is nothing linking this slide to anything. I have not had this problem with any of our other modules or sections. I have tried creating new question slides and it did not work. I deleted Slide 7 and it worked fine the first time through the preview, but then when I viewed the preview again, it started jumping back and would not even let me get to the questions. Can anyone help?

Normally the Next button on a question slide is not needed, because it has the functionality of Skipping the question. It is however needed if you want to allow Review.
Another explanation is that you did change the normal work flow for a question slide, where a two-step process for submitting will take automatically the user to the next slide.
Question Question Slides in Captivate - Captivate blog
What did you do to need the Next button? If the user submits:
Feedback appears with the indication to press Y or to click on the slide, happens at the pausing point of the Question slide (default is 1.5secs)
When user presses Y or clicks, the actions Success/Last Attempt are executed if all attempts are exhausted, and you have only 1 attempt on Question level: the actions are by default Continue, but you can change it to 'Go to Next Slide' to shorten the waiting time (or drag the pausing point closer to the end of the slide).
    What did you change?

  • Weird issue. Captivate 6 not letting me select a script for an Advanced Action

Hi, So i'm facing this really weird issue on a captivate 6 project that i built. I need to add an Advance Action on a slide Exit action. This was previously set as "Continue" and now I want to set this to "Execute Advanced Action" (an Advanced Action script that I just wrote). The thing is that when I change the On Exit property to "Execute Advanced Actions", I am not able to select a script from the "Script" dropdown. I've tried everything from:
changing machines and doing this on different computers with Captivate 6
Making copies of the file and trying those
Closing Captivate and Restarting my computer
Ensuring that the slides are not locked
but can't seem to figure this out. Also funnily, if I try to set the On Exit property of let's say slide 67 as "Execute Advanced Actions" (when it was previously just "Continue"), all other slides are also changing to this, meaning the On Exit property for all other slides has also been changed from "Continue" to "Execute Advanced Actions".
I've been stuck with this for the last 6 hours and can't figue this out.
    Please Help!!!

If this is the same file you were having issues with before where we suspected corruption, then I'd have to say this probably confirms it.
    http://www.infosemantics.com.au/adobe-captivate-troubleshooting/recover-corrupt-project
Usually the fix is to copy all slides into a new blank shell project of the same size to try and strip out the corruption issue.
    See item #4 here:
    http://www.infosemantics.com.au/adobe-captivate-troubleshooting/basic-troubleshooting-tech niques
However, since you are on a Cp version earlier than 7.0.1, please note that this will also strip out all of your current advanced actions as well (which also might be where the corruption is anyway).
Your issue is actually quite rare.  I cannot guarantee you that Cp 7 would never do the same thing, but one advantage of Cp7 is that you can try copying and pasting slides into a new shell project and it WILL bring along the advanced actions and variables as well.  So I definitely think it's worth downloading the trial version of Cp7, upgrading with the Cp 7.0.1 patch and giving it a go to see if that fixes your issue.
Alternatively, if you haven't got lots of time-consuming Advanced Actions to recreate, just paste all slides into a new shell project and recreate them.  It's probably not going to take that long if it's only one project file.

  • Edit Actions and Advanced Actions in some kind of text editor

Is there any way to edit Actions and Advanced Actions in some kind of text editor?
The built-in GUI is fine for little tweaks, but trying to use it for anything real is a almost impossible.
Can Creative Suite open a Captivate project and give access to the Actionscript in the project?
Is there a text file someplace that can be extracted, editted, and put back in?

    Hello,
has the feature to edit  Actions and Advanced Actions using a text editor been implemented into the new Captivate 7?
I'm facing the problem that I have very extensive Advanced Actions in Captivate in which I want to change a variable x into a variable y. Doing it manually would take  about a day or so.
It would be great if there was some kind of workaround.

  • Books on Captivate Advanced Actions

Does anyone know about any books that are available for Captivate advanced actions?  Other than the books by IconLogic.

    Hi Melinda
Thanks so much for the information. I'm on a constant quest to determine where to focus my efforts. Unfortunately, I have so many different irons in the fire it's very difficult to get everything I WANT to get done actually done.
I asked because it's helpful for me to know what folks are looking for.
Your post is expecially interesting to me at this time because I concluded facilitating a Captivate class yesterday. I used the Iconlogic books for the class and I have to say that I totally skip the section where Advanced Actions are presented. Not that I didn't cover them, but that what is presented in the book seems too far removed for me. While the example certainly shows creating an Advanced Action, I really cannot see an everyday application for what was presented.
So what I do is to veer off on my own path and use some real world examples that are likely to be asked for. I say this because I've seen others ask for them here in the forums, so I'm guessing they are commonly desired actions.
For example, I worked the class through Hiding the playback controls for Question slides. Then through automatically enabling the Closed Captioning area when playback begins. Then we worked through hiding and showing some images on a slide using Click Boxes. From there, we worked through keeping the user from being able to move from the slide until all interactions had been successfully dealt with.
What seemed odd to me was that while that section often overwhelms some users, once we concluded with it, some of the class participants asked if they could see some "more complex" actions. I was stunned!
Anyhoo, thanks for the feedback! Rick

  • How can I display the elapsed time of the course using Advanced Actions in Captivate?

I have a Captivate course which is approximately 35 minutes in length. On each slide I would like to display to the user, the current elapsed time.
    EXAMPLE:
    25/35 minutes complete
The 35 would remain static, so I have been working with the elapsed time system variable in CP: elapsed:$$cpInfoElapsedTimeMS$$
I can't seem to get the variable to properly display the elapsed time in minutes, rather than miliseconds. Attached is a screen shot of my advanced action.
Can anyone provide guidence regarding how I should structure this differntly?

I talked about that Timer widget in that blog post and pointed to another one:
    http://blog.lilybiri.com/timer-widget-to-stress-your-learners
If you are on CP7, you'll have this widget also as an interaction, which means it is compatible with HTML5 output. Amd there is also an hourglass interaction, with similar functionality but... did not blog about that one
PS: Check Gallery\Widgets to find all widgets. Default path is set to Interactions

  • Can I create a javascript in a captivate advanced action

    Hello all:
I am just getting the hang of Advanced Actions and I am having trouble trying to utilize the Javascript Window.
    I have three captivate variables v_Var1, v_Var2, and v_Var3.
I am trying to create a JavaScript function in the Javascript window to concantonate these into one variable  v_AllResponses.
Is there an example of such a script out there and can you point me to it?
I have looked but so far no luck.

You can define a variable to contain a space and use that in your Advanced Action:
The SPACE variable has a default value of (see screenshot).
That default value is the HTML for a space character.
Not too many people know this, but you can add limited HTML tags to a caption by using Cp variables.  Here are the supported tags:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FlashPlatform/reference/actionscript/3/flash/text/TextField.ht ml#htmlText
This opens up a wide range of possibilities for dynamic text formatting of your variables.  For example, using a single text caption, you could change the color of the text to red or green depending on the tags you surround your variable with DURING RUNTIME.

  • Captivate 8 advanced actions not saving

I just upgraded to Captivate 8 today and was attempting to create a conditional advanced action.  However when I save the action, it doesn't save so the action remains blank.  The advanced action was on click, image disappears, and user jumps to a different slide.  Like Jeopardy.  They answer the question and come back to a main screen where the original link image disappears.  Why won't it save?

I don't think that's it.  I put together the scrip (which is a simple one, only 3 lines) and click "Save Action."  The save action button doesn't grey out or anything.  Then when I try to move to a different AA it asks if I want to save before leaving.  If I say yes, it says an AA with that name is already created.  But when I go to open the original script, it's blank.  I've tried renaming things, selecting different items, and am getting nowhere.  It's the craziest thing!

  • BUG:  Advanced Actions duplicated when creating NEW PROJECTS FROM TEMPLATE using Adobe Captivate 8.

Need:  CREATE NEW PROJECTS FROM TEMPLATE using Adobe Captivate 8.
Problem:  NEW PROJECT (.cptx) duplicates the Advanced Actions originally configured within TEMPLATE FILE (.cpt.).
For example: Template file (.cptl) advanced action "_initializeModule" gets duplicated as "_initializeModule1", "_initializeModule2", "_initializeModule3" within NEW PROJECT.  FYI, the original "_initializeModule" advanced action still appears.
MAJOR BUG, what the heck is going on?!?!!!  Planning to deploy this template file to use for multiple courses with multiple users, this WILL cause epic confusion across the board.

Similar problem, think they are working on it as well: when dragging a shared action from an external library to a slide or object event, and that action is using a parameter that was already created for another shared action, there will be a new parameter created which really screws up the shared action contrary to this problem. Tip: for the moment do not drag shared actions from an external library immediately to an event, but drag them first to the Library: Reuse Shared Actions in other Projects - Captivate 7 vs. 8 - Captivate blog

  • Advanced action appears looped -Captivate 6

I have an HTML5  project that links out to another URL page on about 5 slides.  Jim was kind eough to inform me that there is a known issue about Captivate linking to URLs that are not hand typed. All of the URLs are hand typed, and all advanced actions are set up so that on the last click fo the button, the slide should advance to the next one, and the URL should open in a new tab (in that order) .  This happens perfectly on the first set, but the second set doesn't advance the slide, it just opens the new window. If you return to the captivate window and click the next button it respawns the new window, never going to the next slide.  I've cleared the project on my webserver, forced slides to be-recreated, rebuilt the advanced action, all with no effect.  Anybody else running into anything simiilar?
This is a bit of a show stopper for me since I don't want to just have to code a button - my hope was to make this run like a native iPad app, but if I can't take away the chrome because users have to have it to navigate it can't be done.

well,  I changed it to -
    function open_win()
    window.open("http://cs.franklin.edu/~heinem01/quizpages/wings.html")
    function forward() {
         cpCmndNextSlide = 1;
the first part worked  (it opened the new window) but it didn't forward the slide.

  • Captivate 7 - Copying slides with Advanced Actions

    Hello,
I have a number of slides that I want to copy and paste into a new project. Many of these slides have click to display type advanced interactions.  When I copy and paste the slides into a new project, the advanced interactions don't seem to copy over.  Does anybody know how to copy and paste slides into a new project along with the advanced interactions so that I don't have to recreate variables and interactions?   I tried following Adobe Captivate Help, but got lost.
    Thanks!

Rod, you're a lifesaver!  I figured out the update part and the advanced actions look like they all work. You just saved me about a thousands hours worth of work. Thanks

  • Advanced Actions in Captivate 7

I have Captivate 6.0 but is it possible in version 7 to insert a new decison in Advanced Actions but you get to choose the insertion point for the new decision?
In version 6.0 Captivate inserts the new decision at the end of the decision block. I'd like to insert a new decision at the beginning. I don't see how this is possible in version 6.0. but can anyone tell me if this is possible in version 7.0? Thanks!

    I have an unrelated question:
In Advanced Actions using Conditional actions, when I compare the text in a TEB to a string, sometimes Captivate puts the string in "quotes" and sometimes it doesn't. Do you know why and does this have any impact on the comparison?
    E.g. Text_Entry_Box contains "Abc"  vs.
            Text_Entry_Box contains Abc

  • Captivate 8 responsive project with advanced action to show/hide interaction

I'm finding that responsive projects in captivate 8 don't properly show interactions upon show/hide. Is anyone else having this issue and knows how to fix it?
I've tried to not group items together but the interaction still doesn't appear.
I've tried placing the show hide information into an advanced action instead (actually my project requires this) and it doesn't work, nor does it work like in the screenshots below.
I've tried to duplicate this in a non-responsive project and it works which makes me think this is only related to responsive projects.
Thoughts? Any ideas would be helpful.  Thanks!

I believe the problem is still present in Captivate but I've read a post on these forums that went some way to explaining what is happening and a possible workaround. The issue is in the method that Captivate writes HTML5 and the order in which it displays elements on the canvas. I had a quick look to try and locate the post but without any luck. The person who posted it did give instructions on how to resolved the issue 'relatively' simply by modifying the HTML5 code once you had published the files. I did say 'relatively' simple because this solution does require some knowledge of HTML5.
Sorry that I could not be of much more help and I do hope that my recollection of this possible solution is correct.

  • Captivate adds "Continue" to Advanced Action when Shape is deleted

    Hello
I have discovered a particularly annoying 'feature' of Captivate, which can be demonstrated as follows.
Add a Smart Shape to a slide, and call it TestShape.
Create a new Advanced Action and call it TestAction (in this example use Standard Action but the behaviour also occurs for Conditional Action)
Add an action (step) Show -> TestShape.
    Save the Advanced Action.
On the slide, delete TestShape. This means, the first action (step) of TestAction can no longer be executed.
Open the Advanced Action and look at Test Action.
You will see, Captivate has added Continue as an action (step), in place of the broken action.
This has caused problems for me in complex actions. I have made design changes including (deleting shapes e.g. messages I no longer want to show/hide), and not realised that this has caused additional Continue actions in my Advanced Actions. It manifests itself in 'jumping' behaviour where I expect the slide to be paused.
To remedy it, I now need to review all my Advanced Actions before publishing, to make sure there are no unwanted Continue steps included.
Has anyone else experienced this? Any tips / tricks for avoiding this problem?
    Thanks
    Sarah.

Sarah, that has always been the case. I already filed a request to have the Continue replaced in that case with a more clear warning. But no response yet.

  • Captivate 4 - Advanced Actions - Pause/Play buttons

Hi - So I have created a 2 buttons - a pause and play - so my users can pause/play my captivate video (audio and actual slide). I have created my 2 variables for the buttons and I have created my advanced action. I'm assigning my pause to 'rdcmndPause', hide pause, show play. And I'm assigning play to 'rdcmndResume', hide play, show pause. It's not working. The pause/play buttons appear and disappear like they should - but my project isn't pausing or playing. Any thoughts?

You can create and use Widgets for Adobe Captivate 4 in AS2 as well Mike.
If you go to your Captivate Installation directory and find the "Gallery" folder and "Widgets" then you should be able to find some AS2 Widget Source files. Take a look at the "Flash Button" widget. This is a relatively simple widget and you can basically just use the code framework to make your own button widget.
If your end users have low-end systems then it's probably safer to stay with AS2 and publish towards Flash Player 8.
