Cannot edit anything

Hear my plea, mighty iPhoto gurus!
I recently had a free 30-day trial version of Corel's Painter Essentials, which I decided was not for me. After the trial period was over, I was no longer able to edit anything in iPhoto (imports from my camera, from my scanner, photos already in iPhoto), because as soon as I clicked "Edit", I would be asked to buy/register Painter. No matter what I clicked (later, etc.) I could not get past this to iPhoto's editing features.
I contacted Corel and was eventually guided through discarding Painter from:
1) user/library/application support
2) applications/Corel
3) user/library/preferences/com.corel
and then emptied the trash. Whew, Corel gone, and photos now ready to be edited, right?
No. Here's what I get when I select anything in iPhoto & click "Edit":
"Unreadable Files: 1
The following file could not be imported. (The file is in the iPhoto library folder.)"
This is followed by the location of the file.
I called Apple Support and was told to rebuild the library.

I backed up the library, and did the rebuild using iPhoto's built-in rebuild tool, selecting "Rebuild the iPhoto Library database". The instructions said this could take several minutes, depending on the library's size. However, although I have 1,400 images, they popped in within a couple of seconds, so I'm suspicious. And of couse, still no ability to edit.
All my albums seem to be intact, I haven't messed around renaming files, my slideshows play just fine, I can select a photo & e-mail it, so what am I missing here? Because of my inexperience, I am extremely hesitant to do a manual rebuild of the iPhoto library, as it seems to be very time-consuming to re-do albums, etc. afterwards, judging by other entries in these discussions.

The use of Corel may have changed the files in some manner. Try the following: download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, substituting your account name for mine. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field.
If no success try rebuilding the library with iPhoto Library Manager. It creates a new library, leaving the old one untouched, and often succeeds when the normal method does not. Here's how:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: It can take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos. One user reported that with a library of about 5,000 images it took about 12 hours so plan ahead.
