Cannot edit iTunes tags

It appers that a fair number of my itunes music files can no longer be edited, ie the tag metadat is greyed out. I think that this has happened since creating a new smaller library to use with itunes match and thn reopening my older much larger (80,000 plus songs).
Anybody got any ideas what is going on?
Also since the last couple of iTunes updates my album covers are no longer available on my iphone4S
Thanks for any help

I have seen this problem listed with other forums and had the same problem myself. The problem is simple and so is the solution. It would appear that iTunes 5 does not handle multiple ID3 tags very well, and so, you must use a program like MP3 Rage to go in and delete them. There is a way to do this en masse in the program. I am hoping that it will be fixed soon.

  • Cannot edit ID3 tags for newly added tracks

I want to stress: this is for iTunes 10.5 b2 but I want to make sure this gets out there so this issue can be resolved sooner rather than later since it's somewhat ESSENTIAL for iTunes to actually function properly.
But I upgraded to b2 from b1 today and now anytime I add any new mp3 files I cannot edit the ID3 tags - in fact I go to edit them and all the options are greyed out...
Anything added PRIOR to the upgrade is editable it's just anything I add since the upgrade. I've tried restarting the app and it still is locked.
Anyone have any suggestions? Has anyone else seen this?

Since iTunes 10.5 is development release only and you as a developer agreed to not discuss it in accordance with your non-disclosure agreement, you should post the question over here -> http://www.developer.apple.com

  • Since update to iTunes 7.3.2.6 cannot edit comments tag

... which is pretty annoying as I have automatic playlists based on the comments! Backgruond - until now never a problem; all files on windows server (mapped drive); full ntfs/share rights; when iTunes closed I can the tag direct from windows explorer. Any suggestions?

Hi all. I have 10.4.10 (usually keep everything updated) and recently upgraded to iTunes 7.3.2 automatically. It was a mistake, since I had iTunes open at the time, and had to do a 'force quit' to continue the install (I don't recall a cancel option). The install went fine, but now when I open the new version and it just freezes up and I have to force quit to close it out. Have tried to reinstall twice, same result. I even did a windows restart in between just to vary things, no luck. So now I can't continue watching the HUNDREDS of dollars of stuff I've bought via the iTunes store, or forget about updating my wife's iPod and listening to any new tunes. Some super-mac-er help us out!!!!

    Above is my altered XML.
    I went to
    http://sharepoint/Search/Pages/results.aspx?k=Document%201
and edited Refinement Panel, Web Part
Refinement in Refinement Panel, Filter Category Definition, that is the XML above!  I ONLY changed Title="Tags" to be "Enterprise Keywords"  and when I do so, (DEselecting the Use Default Configuration), Tags "Disappears"
after I check in the Search Results page!
If I select the "Use Default Configuration" checkbox, and click Apply, OK, Check In the page, Tags appers!
I even tried to rename "Tags" to "Tagss" and it still "Disappeared!"
Anyway that I can rename that to avoid confusion with my users as I tell them to use "Enterprise Keywords" and then it says "Tags" in Refinement Panel.
SharePoint 2010 SP2 September 2013 CU, IE 9 x86 on Windows 7 SP1.  I tried on firefox as well, refreshing, and same "result!"

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you wanted to rename "Tags".
For taxonomy filter categories, we need to use the following title: Tags for taxonomy tags filter categories by using
owsmetadatafacetinfo to display the generated category.
In the other word, we cannot edit the “Tags” Title.

  • Can not edit id3 tags since upgrade to iTunes 8.1: permissions problem (?)

    Hi all,
I am angry at myself for having upgraded to 8.1 before I knew that it's ok, and angry at Apple releasing this update with too many problems. Here is my list:
    (1) I cannot change ID3 tags within iTunes for certain tracks. I usually click on one or several tracks, press Command+i for information, then change the desired tags (e.g. genre, album, etc.) and click ok. Only that iTunes won't let me write anything. I found that I have no longer write permission to exactly these tracks (my music is on an external LaCie Firewire800 HD). What I did so far:
    - I tried to run "Repair permissions" on the internal HD.
    - I clicked on the iTunes music folder on the external hard drive, opened the information window and changed under "Sharing & Permissions" the rights to read&write for my user account. I clicked on "Apply to enclosed items", which should set the permissions to all elements within the folder.
Any ideas? My system is freshly installed (~3weeks old), everything is updated.
    (2) Probably related to (1): certain files and documents on my internal hard drive have wrong permissions. Firefox for example is locked as read only, and I cannot update it via the "Check for update" in the help menu. I know there is an update available, as I am using 3.0.6 and the newest is 3.0.8. Repair permissions did not help. See the screen shot for the grayed out "Check for updates" menu entry.

    (3) In iTunes, I have a smart playlist in which all songs rated with four or more stars are gathered. I found songs in this list that I did not rate yet, and they all have odd "empty" stars in comparison to the songs I rated myself. What's up with that? See screenshot, some of the songs of the album "I love Jazz" have these odd stars:
    http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/8702/picture1zkg.png

That's exactly what I did, it took ~20sec to complete the "apply to enclosed items" command (there was heavy disk access), but it does not improve. The permissions stay the same for the files/folders in question. It's very odd, have a look at the screenshot:
Some folders have correct permissions, others (to which I have no access through iTunes) show "admin" twice as the only user who is allowed to write. Repair permission does not help. I have hundreds of files/folders where permissions are wrong, only since the upgrade recently.

  • I transferred all my Itunes music from an old PC to my new one with Windows 7.  Now I cannot edit "artist" or anything else for the songs.  It is all greyed out and I cannot enter information. Is there any way to correct this problem?

I transferred all of my music from an older PC to my new one with Windows 7.  Now I cannot edit selected songs.  The information is greyed out and I can't type over it (on all my music except NEW downloads).  Can anyone help?  I even have a few songs with NO artist tag and I can't write anything in them either.

It's a permissions problem. Try this: right click on your iTunes icon and choose "run as administrator" that might fix it.

I ran into the same problem, I think that, If you tab on a song that is on your IPOD, and the song data is grayed-out, I think it means that the song is probably twice on your IPOD and that the iTunes directory can not edit THAT song data for two (or more) files @once. Check if this is the case, sinceI have the same problem,am looking for a way to have One and the same song in more playlists but only keep the song once on the IPOD.

  • Cannot edit track info in itunes

    I just downloaded iTunes v. 10.6.3.25
I connected my iPhone to my computer and let iTunes see that it's there. If I try to go in under devices to my music library that is on the phone NOT in the library on the computer and try to right click, get info, I cannot edit any of the track information in there.
Do I have to sync the phone to my iTunes and transfer all of the music to the computer to be able to edit the info? I have an older iPod and I can connect it, go into devices and edit in there with no issues, it just won't let me do it on the phone.
    Please help!!

Personally, I would edit the information in your iTunes Library and then connect the iPhone and Sync the library with the iPhone.
Since it's a Sync (synchronization) of iTunes with your iPhone, any new information on the phone (such as play counts) will be synced with iTunes while the updated track information in the library will be synced with the phone.

  • Cannot edit or add keyword tags

I'm getting this strange behvior and cannot figure out why.
In the Keywording panel, the rectangle where you can enter or edit keyword tags shows a white border.  Tags cannot be added or changed.  The dropdown above the box is set to Enter Keywords.
Not sure to how restore editing ability.
    Thank you,
    Robert

    Robert,
Exiting and re-opening Lightroom is said to work. This bug has been described here before, but no one has been able to pin down the sequence of operations that causes it. If you can find a consistent way of making it happen, we'd love to hear, and the good folks at Adobe would be glad to hear as well.
Most of the work in fixing a bug is finding a way to consistently reproduce it.

  • Cannot get itunes to update to 10.5 using xp media edition?

cannot get itunes to update to 10.5 using xp media edition?

This forum is for questions from those managing sites on iTunes U, Apple's service for colleges and universities to post educational material in the iTunes Store. You'll be most likely to get help with this issue if you ask in the general iTunes for Windows forums.

  • Cannot Edit Song Info

I have several MP3 files that I cannot edit the info for. I just noticed/incurred this issue after upgrading to iTunes 9.0.0.70. After the iTunes 9.0.1.8 upgrade, I am still having the issue.
When I try to click into a field, the cursor does not appear. When I right-click and choose "Get Info," everything is grayed out.
This happens to MP3 files downloaded from the internet, MP3 files that I create/record myself on my PC, and also MP3 files ripped from CD. It does not happen with every MP3, though. Also, it can happen with some MP3 files from the same source as others that I can edit.
One note is that I can find the file via Windows Explorer and physically edit the properties of the MP3 files using the "Advanced" properties. As soon as I change the title, author, album, etc. and play the song in iTunes, all of the correct/adjusted fields show.
Another note that I have noticed on one particular pair of editable/non-editable MP3 files from the same source is that one is recognized as ID3 Tag v2.2 and one is ID3 Tag v2.3.
Is this a known iTunes 9.0 bug or is there a fix for this issue?

OK...Here's something to complicate the matter for you:
I just went through some of my older MP3 files, some that I have customized the info on, and all of the info was grayed out and uneditable. I went through a few in a row and found one that I could edit. I closed the window and tried to edit the MP3s again. This time, I found that I could edit all of the ones I could not edit (just 5 seconds earlier) but could not edit the one I previously could edit. After closing the windows and trying a third time, I could edit all of the MP3 files in the list.
What is up? Apple, are you aware of this issue?

  • Editing XML / Tags

I have read many posts, and read the Tech Specs about iTunes several times. Yes, it is a great resource as far as giving you combinations of tags and code to fix problems.
My question remains. Specifically, how do I edit tags or XML to make changes and implement those fixes to my podcast? I understand that I can use the text editor, but then what do I do with that file? Where do I put it? Upload it?
I guess another way to put it is by saying I am grasping the idea of how to fix the engine, so how do I pop the hood? Where are the tools?
I have my video(s) posted on Blip.tv and have used Feed Burner to create the feed. I have gotten far enough to actually post something on iTunes, but changes need to be made.
Thanks so much for your help!!

Is there anyway to know that what I changed is correct quicker than waiting for iTunes?
You can see changes immediately by putting the URL of your feed into a browser like Safari or Firefox (2.0 or up) - they will display the newest info they are getting from your feed. iTunes works, too, though, it just takes longer.
Is this where Feed Validater comes into play?
Feed Validator is used to see whether your feed is readable by aggregators (e.g. iTunes, Juice, MyYahoo, etc.) or not (broken code that cannot be read). It will either show you where you need to fix your code, or give you a "Congrats!" message. If it displays your code, then you can see if your changes have made it online, but it also means that there is something wrong with your feed, so this is not the best method to check if you feed has been updated.
So to make sure I understand, I may want to copy my raw feed from feedburner into a text edit document and make the changes there. . . I looked all over the place and couldn't find where to upload or overwrite an existing feed.
No, not exactly. FeedBurner is a blog-to-feed generator and also a stats tool. FeedBurner is not "hosting" any files that you can edit. When you put your content through FB, you remember that URL they wanted, the one that got you started? That is what they are getting their info from, and that is the file that you have to edit. You can't edit your feed by copying FB's code, modifying it, and then uploading to FB. That is not the way it works; you can add some iTunes tags through their "SmartCast" feature, but that's about as far as you can edit your feed through them.
So, where is your "burned" URL? Is that through Blip.tv? Or are you posting the Blip.tv videos to a blog, and then you "burned" the blog? (Like I said, it would be really great if you could post all URLs related to your feed, so I can get an idea of how you are putting it together.)
Is there a better resource to use than Blip.tv or Feed Burner?
I don't know much about video hosts; I host my own files. But if Blip.tv is free, doesn't put ads in your videos, and claims minimal rights over your content, it's probably fine. There are others on this board that can probably make good recommendations - there are tons of hosts out there, with varying degrees of usability and freedom. For stats, I don't think you are going to get much better than FeedBurner, especially for a free service.
In the mean time, I picked up a copy of the "Podcaster's Bible". I'm a pretty technical guy (with aircraft at least) and I would really like to know this stuff inside and out.
I know there are a lot of sources out there, and I'm glad you have been reading them - that is how I learned. But obviously some of them are conflicting (especially online), and don't apply in all cases. I hope the "Bible" is a good resource; I've never looked at it.
Just to give you a real simple breakdown of how this stuff works, I'm going to give you a list of what I think you've done:
    1. Generate media - through GarageBand, iMovie, etc. -> video, audio, whatever. Make sure it is properly formated, per the Podcast Tech Spec.
    2. Upload the media to a server - in your case, Blip.tv
    3. Generate or hand-code an RSS/XML feed - I'm not sure how you are doing that at this point, but there are many generators and methods, and this link tells you what the code all means. Or you could copy from an example feed and then hand-edit it. You also might have blog space that you are telling FB to generate a feed from - in that case ignore the next two steps.
    4. Upload your XML file to a server - again, you will need somewhere to host the file.
    5. Sign up for an account with FeedBurner, and "burn" the URL you got in the previous step.
    6. Submit the new URL you get with FeedBurner to iTunes, and publicize the URL wherever you can.
If you have submitted a URL to iTunes that isn't your FB URL, don't resubmit the new one. That will cause you problems.
Here are some resources that I've found useful in the past: (some of them are real jargon-filled, so watch yourself)
    http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-xml/
    http://www.podcast411.com/page5.html
    http://catalyst.washington.edu/help/web/podcasting/xml.html

    http://www.apple.com/itunes/store/podcastsfaq.html
    http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/rss/rss.html
Try to keep in mind that there are many ways to do this, so not all instructions will apply in all cases. You'll run into specific problems if you use a specific generator. If you read a tutorial talking about code, but you set up your feed without ever touching any code, it probably doesn't apply to you.
This got to be a really long post, and I apologize for that. If you post your links, I promise to reply with something shorter

  • Cannot edit/delete a certain song

Apparently I imported a song in iTunes (9) that is write protected. I cannot edit any field (they are all greyed out when i use GET INFO), nor can I add art work (message: ArtWork Not Modifiable) and not even delete the song.
When I look on my harddisk for the file to which it is linked, I CAN delete that file, the song in iTunes then gets a ! mark to show there is no file linked, but even THEN i cannot delete the song entry.
    How come?
And more important: What Can I Do?

I'm having this same problem and am somewhat happy to hear that I'm not the only one. I planned on importing some 40 CD rips today and this happenes to 1 or 2 tracks per album. I can't stress how incredibly frustrating this is. I've given up for now since the only way to get the bugger out is to, when it has the ! mark as you have moved the audio file, replace iTunes' link to that file with another audio file, and then delete its listing. Doing this over and over is too tedious and this is unacceptable. Even after this, if I try importing it again (this is all done by drag and drop by the way), the file will still claim to be totally unwritable. Yet in other programs I can edit tags with no problem!
Why is it that every time I upgrade to a new iteration of iTunes there have to be stupid new bugs in previously-existing functions? Is this Apple's way of telling me I should get a Mac? (not going to happen)

  • Any way to globally set "edit keyword tag"

When you double click a keyword in the Keyword List, you're taken to the "Edit Keyword Tag" window, where you have several option boxes to click. Is there any way to globally set these options. For instance, I would like to always forego the option to "export containing keywords." (I'm finding it easier to click the containing keywords according to my preference, which is easy to do, since all the containing keywords appear as part of the hierarchy.)
But of course I don't want to go through each and every keyword that I already have and unclick that option. It'd be far easier to do this globally. Is that an option anywhere?
    Thanks,
    Robert

You cannot edit the items with the iPod.
You should edit them in iTunes and then sync the iPod.
