Cannot edit video! FCE keeps freezing video track, running audio only

I am enormously frustrated. My FCE has stopped working smoothly! It is freezing in arbitrary places during clips, sometimes for a bit & then starting at a later point, or just freezing while the audio continues to play. I have reinstalled Snow Leopard and updates, reinstalled FCE 4 and updates. I have installed smcFanControl to make sure nothing is overheating. I have vacuumed air vents. I have prayed, yelled, cried.
My video camera is a Canon Vixia S100 HD, and only the updated version of FCE can read the files. I know that. I've been editing with FCE for a year now. I think it may be a graphics reader incompatibility or bug, or perhaps even related to Flash since the problem began when Apple announced it would not be going forward with Adobe Flash.
I am a videopoet and frankly can't take my iMac in for servicing at this point.
What is most interesting about this problem is that I can edit "blind" -by guess work- and upload to YouTube or Facebook and the videos are absolutely fine. No freezing, no dislocate of video and audio synch.
Also, I tried to watch my latest clip in Picasa, which is on my desktop, and it began freezing in the same odd way during playback.
Since the videos upload fine, it's not the video itself, but the player in the iMac. It feels like a bug to me, a kink, something between OS X 10.6.4 -it didn't happen before that upgrade- and whatever video player the iMac uses... since freezing of raw video clips occurs across two programs, FCE & Picasa.
Because I can no longer edit my videos properly I am quite fairly rabidly mad, as you can imagine, struggling with these issues for many many hours, and today spending the afternoon re-installing my OS and FCE and upgrades to no avail.
I am hoping someone can enlighten me on what is going on, or if there is a patch for this particular issue.

Check the item properties of the clips in your FCE project and let us know their specs. Also, if you have any still images in the Timeline, make sure they are in RGB Color Mode - NOT Grayscale, Indexed or CMYK.
Also let us know where the media is stored (hard drive type and formatting and how it is connected to your Mac).

Problem: I am importing .avi video files and they are importing as audio only. it will not allow me to drag them into the video slot on the timeframe, and it displays only the speaker symbol in the media management area. If you look at the CODEC, it is Xvid, the opensource version of DivX, just as I suspected. These will almost never work in PrE. The best workflow is to go to before the Xvid compression (these are heavily compressed, loosing a ton of data and quality), or to convert them to DV-AVI Type II files with 48KHz 16-bit PCM/WAV Audio. I use DigitalMedia Converter, but it is shareware. Many users sing the praises of the free Prism to do the conversions. I have never used it, but many here have, and give it very high marks.
Note: no conversion program can ever reclaim that lost data and quality. It is lost and gone forever. That is why my first option was to go back to before that compression was applied. However, conversion will yield files that can be edited with both Video and Audio.

[Edit] not sure why/how they were working before. Usually, with either the Xvid, or DivX CODEC's, one will get a Cannot Import error, or will get either Audio, or Video only. I have never been able to edit any Xvid, or DivX files, in either PrE, or PrPro - never even once. I just convert, if the client cannot get original source files, and I even have a quality loss diagram to show them how the footage will look - not very good, IMHO. I make them sign-off on that quality loss, before I start.

Cannot edit ID3 tags for newly added tracks

I want to stress: this is for iTunes 10.5 b2 but I want to make sure this gets out there so this issue can be resolved sooner rather than later since it's somewhat ESSENTIAL for iTunes to actually function properly.
But I upgraded to b2 from b1 today and now anytime I add any new mp3 files I cannot edit the ID3 tags - in fact I go to edit them and all the options are greyed out...
Anything added PRIOR to the upgrade is editable it's just anything I add since the upgrade. I've tried restarting the app and it still is locked.
Anyone have any suggestions? Has anyone else seen this?

Cannot load Windows 7 - keeps freezing

Hi Everyone. This is a biggy. I have a Toshiba AMD Vision Satellite C660 / C660D laptop with no Windows installation disc. Last week it became very sluggish, then the interface resembled that of the ‘safe mode’ interface and it finally became completely unresponsive, therefore, via F8 on start- up I selected the option which allowed for it to revert to factory settings (I no longer have this option)
The DOS screen appeared and started loading as normal then that become unresponsive so I restarted only to see Windows start up for the ‘first time’ and carry on loading, prior to this I had to create a boot cd from my other laptop to reboot the system as I had lost the ‘boot mngr’.
The last part of the installation process began whereby a white Toshiba screen is displayed with a green progress bar that loads certain drivers (see attachment). There are 39 steps to this process and I seem to remember from before that the computer should keep restarting itself, but it keeps freezing after about two steps. I kept switching it off and eventually the ‘system administrator’ locked my accounts.
Once again I restarted the PC but this time in ‘safe mode’ The operating system did indeed load in safe mode and I created some new accounts with administrator privileges, however, I am still unable to load the whole operating system as it keeps freezing during the last part of the process.
I have very limited knowledge of loading operating systems so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try holding '0' (zero) as you start the laptop to load the recovery utility and run it again.

What would cause my video to keep freezing?

Greetings, all ye of greater knowledge in areas like this.
Recently, I have had a strange problem with my video freezing. If I'm viewing the video on my timeline, it will ocassionally freeze, but my audio will keep playing. I can stop the timeline and hit play again and it unfreezes the video, but it still freezes at random while my audio seems to play without a problem.
Where this is becoming a nuisance is that my video is freezing in the same way when I try to print to tape. The audio will continue, but it will get stuck on a frame somewhere and will stay on it through the rest of the video while it's printing to the tape. Additionally, when I try to capture footage from my camera, I can get about 15 seconds into a clip and then it will either drop frames or freeze on my while the audio keeps going.
Does anyone know what may be causing this? It almost seems like there is a lag somewhere in my system, but I can't figure out where. This literally just seemed to pop up one day and it's like my computer has been running slower. i'm not sure if this is a FCP problem or a system problem, but I think it may have started with FCP.

eee! So many posts.
I currently have 2 harddrives hooked up. One has about 37.56 Gigs left on it (probably just over 3/4 full) and the other is nearly full. My files are saved onto it. I am editing in DV format and everything is rendered.
I have a drive allocated as the scratch disk.
I don't believe the drive is going to sleep. I would think it would effect my audio as well, since they are both located on the same drive.
For what it's worth, I ended up ejecting the drive I was using as I needed to do some other work and my system seemed to speed back up. I reopened Final Cut with and it's like my system isn't bogged down anymore. I may try capturing to tape using a different drive and see if maybe it was the drive itself that was bogging down my system.

Flash player keeps freezing videos and streams

I've been having issues since about wednsday or thursday last week. My flash player is simply not behaving as it used to, (it's been fine on this PC and Internet Connection since October, it's not my rig nor my connections fault) when I watch youtube videos they stop loading after a little while and I have to click stop download and then start it again, or hit f5, it wont continue loading, and it's not just a wait for it to buffer.
Then this friday, as I was going to watch MLG that I paid for, I noticed that streams were freezing aswell, same issue, they go cool and usual for a few seconds to a few minutes, and then they just stop loading the stream or video, making me restart the download through pause - play, f5, stop download then restart etc.
I've been fiddling with Flash player settings such as storage maximum (now set to unlimited), I've cleared my cache and cookies aswell. I spent in total 7 hours with MLG Tech support trying to figure out what was wrong to no avail. I've even used direct DNS Server connecting, so I am left with the thought that it's a Flash Player issue. On some youtube videos dont have this problem. (Only the ones not using Flash player!!!)

Video clips keep freezing?

When I try to view video clips online via email or Facebook the clips keep stopping and starting.
How can I fix this?

Most likely the problem is caused by the Flash plugin.
Uninstall the Flash plugin then reinstall new > Troubleshoot Flash Player | Mac OS
Very important to uninstall the currently installed plugin before reinstalling.
Now try a video.
BTW... if you have the ClickToFlash extension installed, that can prevent Flash based video from streaming. It can also be installed as a plugin in /Library/Internet-Plug-Ins.
And check to see if Safari is running in 32 bit mode. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info. If the box next to: Open in 32 bit mode is selected, deselect, quit then relaunch Safari.

Multiclip keeps splitting video, multiclip keeps splitting video

I am trying to create multiclip like I have done loads of times and video and audio are split (not synced) when they are synced up beforehand. red line runs between on multiclip timeline and there is no audio?!

Not sure i believe dv. original footage audio out of sync, I synced it up placed 2nd video footage with it. copy and pasted in new bin created multiclip and no sound and video and audio not placed together

Can you loop video forever as a menu background, but audio only once?

I'm wanting to make a menu that has a video background and plays music as soon as the DVD starts up, but I want the music to stop after it plays through twice and the video to continue to loop.
I know I could do this by setting a loop point, but I don't want the user to have to sit and wait the first time the music plays before they can select a button.
Is there a way to do this?

Thanks for the reply, but I don't think either of your solutions will achieve the result I'm wanting. I want to loop the AUDIO just once (it plays two times after the menu comes up), but I want the VIDEO background to continue to loop forever. I also want the user to be able to make a menu selection at any time, including right when the menu first appears.
If I set a loop point, it makes the menu unusable until that loop point is reached the first time.
I was thinking I could do this with two menus. The first menu would have the audio and video and only loop one time, then its end action would send it to another menu that looks exactly like the first, but only has the video looping on it. The only problem with this solution is that if the user moves their selection to something other than the default button, it will jump back to the default button when it goes to the second menu (or whatever button the "end action" is set to on the first menu).
Would there be a way to have the first menu jump to the identical second menu and stay on whatever button the user currently has highlighted?

Can I keep music videos from taking over?

I like to play music while I work on my computer. At one point I began buying music videos of songs rather than audio only so most of my playlists contain a mixture of music videos and audio only tracks. Whenever a music video plays it jumps to the front, often covering my work. What's worse is that after the music video ends, if the next song is audio only, the album cover jumps to an even larger area of the screen than covered by the video! It seems like in the old days I could limit my music playback to the "Now Playing" window. I can't find that choice anywhere in preferences or menus any more.
My question is, is there any way to prevent iTunes from hijacking my screen; to hear the music but keep the associated music visuals in the background?
I'm running iTunes 10.5 on my 12-core tower, OS X, 10.6.8.

Player keeps freezing!

I have:
Windows 7
IE 11
Flash Player 15
First, for some reason my Flash player disappeared. Then when trying to install it, I kept getting "IE is still running", had to chase down where it was running. Got that handled and finally installed the recent version of Flash Player 15. According the web page it is installed correctly. But, now whenever I try to play a video it keeps freezing. I want to say it is "buffering", cause it seems to keep trying to catch up. I had no problem w/ this before, why is this a problem now?

Brand new lenovo u400 keeps freezing

I just received a brand new u400 two days ago. Yesterday I tried installing a few programs like firefox, avast, adobe but then after two hours it would just keep freezing. I couldn't use ctrl alt del so I had to turn it off. Then it would work in safe mode but not in regular mode.
So I rebooted the whole system and started all over again this morning. So this morning I just decided to install avast and run the virus scanner. No viruses picked up so I shut it down. When I powered it up again and I would enter my password, it would freeze on the welcome screen. Nothing happened for about 8 minutes. The circle just kept spinning with no sign of actually getting onto my desktop. Now i've been able to get past the welcome screen but now it just keeps freezing on the desktop. If I click avast, the laptop will just freeze.
Should I call technical support or has this happened to someone else?
edit: now it keeps freezing on the welcome screen again. I can't even get past the login phase...

Your system is possibly infected with malware.
Please go into Safe mode,choose safe mode with networking
and then go here http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/
run a scan,checkmark all appropriate boxes,including 'check archives,
click on advanced settings and checkmark ''scan for pottentialy unsafe apps
and disable your antivirus just before you run Start
and re-enable it afterwards.The scanner will give you the option to delete anything it finds at the end.
Please do that.and if it does find malware,let us know.

Two-way video chat with other (audio-only) participants?

Is it possible to have a five-way chat in iChat with
. - myself and one other participant via video, and
. - three other participants via audio only?
I know there's an option for one-way video conferencing, where only one person in a conference has video and the other(s?) have audio, but what about two with video and the others with audio?
And if we did this, could the three audio participants see the two video participants even if the three don't participate via video?

Hi,
You can start A One Way Video chat with a Buddy without a Camera.
You can add others up to the standard 4 people (you and three others) and some can be audio Only.
You do have to have a Mac of a G4/1Ghz dual or above and have a Upload speed of 256 k at the very Least (Apple Specs say 384k) although more is preferable when you are Host.
Ideally the Host should be the fastest Mac with the fastest connection.
Invite Camera able Buddies first then Audio Only Buddies by clicking on the green A/V icon they are showing in the Buddy list.

My contacts program keeps freezing up

My iMac keeps freezing up. I have only had this problem after upgrading my operating system to snow leopard. It just keeps scanning and you cannot use the program the only thing I have been able to do is shut down the computer and I can only do that with the power button.
